Hello From Church Camp!

It’s been almost humorous how difficult it’s been to get online while I’m out at church camp with my family! I’ve been too busy to write anyway, but shucks, I’ve missed hanging out here with you. :)

Would you believe the one other time I finally got internet access, my laptop started acting up? I almost cried, but that seemed silly. So I took a nap. I needed that more than anything. (I’m on a borrowed laptop right now. Internet is slow, but it’s working…at the moment. I’m typing quickly so as to hopefully not lose my chance to touch base with you.)

Matt and I have been helping in the kitchen this week, assisting the amazing head cook as we feed around 140 people three meals a day. It has been so much fun – and super exhausting too. I am shocked that so many of my muscles ache from standing all day, lifting heavy pans, and in general working harder physically than I have in a long time. I feel rather wimpy, but I hear I’m normal – at least when it comes to having achy back/legs/arms/feet/shoulders when cooking all day a camp. Kudos to those of you who do this type of work all the time.

It’s possible that I’m also a little bit sore from playing a game of Ultimate Soccer with all the campers a few nights ago. I’m proud of my bruises, and I still officially stink at kicking a soccer ball – but it sure was a load of fun. I thought you might like to know that while I completely whiffed the ball (missed it entirely. twice. while everyone was watching), and wasn’t fast enough to get to the ball many times over (but who’s counting?), I actually scored a goal for my team. You may have heard me scream with excitement. I think my boys were proud…and very shocked. Heh.

Speaking of soccer, you know Matt must be dedicated to serving this week at camp since this meant he missed being able to watch the semi-final World Cup games. We did look up the game scores on our phones. Dude!! What happened to Brasil?

Well, that is the end of my scattered thoughts for the evening. Yay for finding a working computer and an hour of online access – at the same time. Hopefully I’ll be able to check in with you over the weekend.

Now you tell me about what you’ve been up to this week. I may not be able to get to a computer much, but I can read your comments through the email on my phone. I’ll welcome the fun breaks to read about what you’ve been doing!

Your week sounds great!! My husband and I have been working during the day and helping with Vacation Bible School at our church from 6-9 pm. We are the game leaders and last night there were 136 kids! It was great!! Their mission this week is to bring offering to help send evangelism Soccer balls and indestructable soccer balls to Hati. The goal was to send 54 balls but the kids have brought in enough so far to send 90 of them!!! Praise God for that!

Hello from South Carolina! We do not have internet at our vacation house where we were last week. When we come home I am just so glad to be back on the web for about two days and then I realize what a time drain it is for me.

Yesterday our 22 month old grandson and 5 week old granddaughter were here all day. I love it when they come but I am SO tired when they go home. Praying for strength for you today.

I know all about working in camp kitchens! My mom and I worked for two summers at New England Frontier Camp (nefc.org) in the kitchens – she was manager, I was dessert cook. It can be so tiring, but it is so worth it! :)

My favorite memory was when I told one of the counselors I would make him any dessert he wanted for his birthday. He was so excited! He couldn’t make up his mind, so I got out the cookbook and starting reading off cake titles. I read Boston Cream Pie and he was like “Can you really make that?” I checked, and, yes, I could. He was so happy!!

Oh, that sounds like fun. I miss my church camp days.
We’re making cow costumes to wear to Chik-fil-A tomorrow. My teens don’t mind the silliness because they like the food. I don’t get to take them out very often because meals for eight of us cost so much.

Hey! Church camp is so rewarding. Takes us out of our comfort zones. Loving to cook, working in the camp kitchen is my favorite!

Wow, congrats on your soccer goal! I’m proud of you! Today the hubby is off, so we’re playing in the garden, hanging out with the animals, and we’re going to enjoy some fresh fruits and veggies (finally got to the store)! And… that was a lot of exclamation points. I hope you’re having a good day. I am. :-)

Hello from Arkansas! Weeks like you are having are SO tiring but so fun. Memories galore I’m sure!! I’m currently sitting in the bookstore at Laura Ingalls Wilders house in Mansfield, Missouri, while my 10 year old looks at everything. We’re enjoying time while older sister is at church camp.

I’ve done that in the past. It is a great way to get to know the campers and the adults working. I went when our son Matthew went. Hard work, but very rewarding.

I’m gearing up to get ready for Vacation Bible School next week. That week is always, much like your church camp, rewarding and exhausting at the same time, but a blessing for sure.
Congrats on your goal! I don’t think I’d be very good at soccer either, but having fun is the point, right?

Glad you enjoyed your week at camp and time with your family. Nothing wrong with taking some days off of blogging for that! Don’t ever feel bad for taking a little break (not that you do)! :)

The Brazil-Germany game was pretty sad to watch, but how good does the USA’s 0-1 loss to Germany look now? :)
