We always hear that salt is bad. I’m here to tell you otherwise.
Let’s be clear. Some salt actually is bad. Some has been altered so much from its original form that it is nutrition-less and therefore harmful (sounds like hundreds of other foods here in America). Some has added ingredients (you mean it’s not just salt?!). Some has been bleached. You want to tell me that those salts are bad? Yep, I believe you. I’ll avoid those.
But what about sea salt? Well, not all sea salts are created equally. (Actually, they were probably created equally but then altered to become less-than.) When I see “Sea Salt” at the store, I can definitely tell that some of them are not as nutritious. I avoid those and stick with Redmond Real Salt. It is my very favorite because it is absolutely pure and thus very delicious.

Real Salt means – well, real, authentic salt. A quick glance at the ingredients label on most salts might surprise you! Many salts contain anti-caking agents and even dextrose (sugar). Others have been heat processed and stripped of their natural trace minerals. I love that it is good for us, so I don’t have to hold back on using it. The beauty of this is that our bodies naturally tell us when enough is enough. Food that is too salty isn’t yummy. Some of us prefer our foods saltier than others. Could that mean that some of us need more minerals than others? Yes, I believe so.

We have tried it and its horrible! Verry gritty! It was like eating a cookie dropped in sand. We threw the whole pound out after it totally ruined our steaks and mashed potatoes. Never again.

I went to a vegetable fermentation class just yesterday and one of the things the instructor told us about is that salt in the grocery store is terrible for you. Looked to see where this salt was sold in our area and found a store south of here about 50 minutes away. I may have to pay them a visit next time I’m down there. I use the “plain” real salt, but have not tried the seasoned varieties. I’d like to.
Here’s how I make my own lemon salt. I zest and juice 1 well scrubbed lemon to drink in a cup of hot (but not boiling) water each morning. I use a big table spoon of the zest in my cup with the juice, but depending on the size of the lemon, there is usually another big spoon of zest left over. I place this in a small glass bowl and mix with a roughly equal portion of real salt. I set the bowl on top of my toaster oven when I make my homemade toast for breakfast, then inside the toaster oven when the toast is done to let the lemon-salt mixture dry out. Separate the drying clumps of zest-salt a time or two in the process, and in a two or three days the lemon salt is completely dry and can be stored in a jar with a tight lid. I have several small bowls at different stages of “dryness” going at once. You can do this with other citrus fruits as well–lime, grapefruit, and orange are great too. You can even mix them. Citrus salt is great on sauteed or grilled vegetables and grilled meat. Yum!

I’ve learned more about the Redmond salts through my daughter, who is a great fan of yours. I’m making the switch over to these real salts, especially to help my husband, who, if he will not give up his salty habit, I want to at least make it count!

I use Redmonds all the time — buy it in a 25 lb bag and it lasts me a little over a year. Until I started cooking from scratch I had no idea I would ever use that much salt!

We use Redmond’s here, too. Their Seasoning salt is amazing – frying pan w/lid, butter, fresh broccoli, and seasoning salt – Fabulous!! My kids scarf it up. Works with string beans, too. I would love to try their Garlic and Onion salts.

I buy sea salt as part of a whole foods approach but never thought to read the packet on it … Why can’t manufacturers stop meddling!!
I was making some bulk purchases at my favorite Amish store and saw a 50 lb bag of Real Salt. I immediately thought of you :) And, wow, that is a lot of salt!
