Our family just rolled into town (at 1:30 this morning!) after a long but quick trip to Arkansas for a family reunion. We get together once every two years – and this year we celebrated our Nana’s 90th birthday! Look at this beautiful lady:
There were aunts and uncles and cousins (and even a doggie), food, and games all weekend. We all had lots of catching up to do!
We made it home just in time to do several loads of laundry, then send the teenage boys off to their first church camp of the summer. This leads me to my grocery shopping dilemma:
- We were all starving for fresh fruits and veggies after a road trip.
- Most of the boys will be gone all week.
I do not even know how to grocery shop for three people.
I am so used to buying half the store for my family every week that when I only have to buy for a few, I feel lost. I settled on “only” 8 pounds of strawberries, 4 pints of blueberries, 4 containers of raspberries, and only 1 watermelon and 1 pineapple. I got a bunch of mixed greens, carrots, peppers, nectarines, and peaches. I’m quite sure I bought more than 3 of us can eat. But after a week of travel food, we’ve been feasting on berries and greens all day – so maybe we’ll finish it off without a problem.
We’re also joining with friends to take a meal to our local mission tonight, so some of this fruit is going there. :)
Have you heard anything about Wal-mart taking away Price-Matching in your area?
I’ve caught wind of a new policy rolling out for Walmart in which they will no longer offer a price-match guarantee. Boo-hoo. Some stores are already affected by this, though thankfully, my store still price-matches – at least for now.
I can’t find any official information on which stores are taking away their price-matching perk. What have you learned about this?
I’ve become quite spoiled by price-matching, so to think we might not get to anymore is quite a bummer! We’ll see how it plays out, and if I hear any more, I’ll keep you posted!
With that, I’m off to enjoy some more berries and glasses of water to counteract the french fries I ate on the road last night. :)
Yes, I also heard that Walmart is stopping price matching. I didn’t find any further details either, it’s all “so up in the air”. Although I didn’t price match often, I have some in the past and it’s disheartening that they are stopping it. I think they are going to start pushing their Savings Catcher App more and using that as the alternative for customers. BUT, when I first started using the app, there were like 100+ stores in my area that they matched against. Then all of the sudden, the amount of stores dropped to 50. So, I wasn’t getting as much of a benefit from it as I had. They changed the policy somehow so it wasn’t as beneficial. But, I also stopped using the app and deleted my Walmart account permanently several months back after my account was hacked and a almost $150 gift card I had been saving up was stolen and used against my knowledge. I went to battle with Walmart regarding this, I got absolutely no where and was out all that money. Since that experience, I do not use the app. It is well known online that the app has flaws and is continuously hacked, tons of people have lost money. The risk just isn’t worth it for me.
Anyways, back to the price matching. Just a few days before news broke about Walmart stopping, Amazon had also released news that they were stopping price matching themselves. They used to give you 7 days to ask for a refund if something you purchased went down in price. They would refund the difference back to you. I loved that! They will no longer do this at all.
I fear that since these 2 huge retailers (Amazon & Walmart) are no longer going to offer price matching, that some of the other retailers will be following suit soon enough like Target. It’s just horrible. It really did help people make ends meet.
I’ve heard the rumors too. Our store in Sand Springs OK has stopped price matching just for one other store in the area. It’s one of those “Cost Plus” stores, where they supposedly give it to you for their cost + 10%. It makes me sad because they had fabulous deals on meat. Pork chops for .98 cents a pound !!!!! The Wal-Mart employee I talked to said that Wal-mart’s meat was better quality than the other store and that was why they were no longer going to honor the ad. I will admit, I’ve bought meat at this Cost Plus store and Wal-Mart’s meat is better (less fat, less bone etc), but it still makes me sad. That price-matching really helped us in the meat department.
My Wal-Mart always claimed that they price matched, but they never really did. They would give a dozen excuses about how the produce was a different brand or in a different kind of bag (net vs. plastic), etc. After a couple of frustrating visits, I quit shopping at Wal-Mart unless it is an emergency.
I believe there was a link in the news story that I read that listed all of the stores where price-matching was discontinued. Luckily, our local Wal-Mart market was not on that list. Our sweet cashiers ALWAYS price-match without even asking, they have always automatically done it for me!
My Walmart in Bluffton, SC has signs posted at each register that they will no longer price match starting July 1st. The sign also says instead of price matching they will be lowering prices store wide.

We also just returned from a trip to Arkansas where my husband’s family is from. Obviously, we’re not related or we would have seen each other at the reunion :) His family is from the Hot Springs, Amity, Glenwood area and it is so beautiful there. It is one of my favorite places and if my kids and grandkids would move with me – I would seriously consider moving 700 miles away :) Glad you enjoyed your time with your family. Your grandmother is precious. What a gift she is still alive!!
I don’t usually shop at Wal-,mart, but my son wanted something there. I decided to give price matching a try. Boo, the cashier was not thrilled when I asked and pointed to a sign that said “As of June 9, 2016 we no longer price match.” So here in the valley of Virginia it is gone.
