Lookie! We’re on TV!

I received a phone call Wednesday from our local NBC news station here in Nebraska. They wanted to interview me about HeavenlyHomemakers.com…could they come in two hours?

Two hours!? Well sure they could come in two hours!

And so, of course, I spent the next two hours sitting quietly and reflecting in wonder about how a dandelion changes in form from a lovely yellow flower to a soft fluffy puff of seeds that children love to blow softly into the air…

Yeah right.

I immediately called Matt, who thankfully was on his way home from work. He suggested that I start to bake something. His reasons for this were threefold:

  1. He was hungry.
  2. He recognized that I had a lot of nervous energy and that I should knead some dough to calm myself.
  3. He thought maybe KHAS-TV might like to see some freshly baked goods in our kitchen.

My husband is so smart. Kneading bread dough when you have a TV crew coming to your house is a perfect way to calm your nerves (chalk that tidbit of wisdom away for future reference, people).

We had a delightful time with Josh Bonifas, their videographer and “interview guy”. He did a great job putting us at ease and asked great questions. Later that night during our nightly prayer time, our boys were talking about “Josh” like he’d been a part of our family forever. So cute.

Anyhoo…being interviewed for the KHAS nightly news was a blast and a wonderful honor. You can watch the clip of me taking bread out of the oven and talking all about Heavenly Homemakers here if you’d like. Disregard the nice stuff the anchor woman says at first about me “having it all figured out”. You all know better than that, right?

Very cool! I pop in and out for recipes as well. I also love to bake and cook and can understand the need for home cooked meals with all the junk that is out there that is so not healthy! Can you share how you made your website so popular? I’ve tried blogging before and I either can’t keep up with it, or its not interesting enough.

You have changed the way I think about food and just this past week I’ve done whole wheat pasta, whole wheat homemade bread, your snickerdoodle recipe (YUM) and put more effort into my kitchen. Minus the fast food we had tonight. (hee hee!)

Our family has been truly blessed by your blog as well. I have used so many of your recipes and always seem to go to your website as a reference. As I look around my kitchen right now I see so many things that are because of what you have shared on your blog. Nutrimill, Bosch, fresh homeade whole wheat bread sitting on the counter, strawberry bread on the counter, wheat in bulk, a menu plan with healthy meals/snacks, cocunut oil, honey, pure maple syrup and sucanant bought in bulk and used regularly instead of white and brown sugar, all these healthy changes for my family because of you in this past year! What an inspiration you are all the way up to Alaska! 5000 readers, that is wonderful. I talk about you like we are wonderful friends. You are on a first name basis at our house. What an honor it would be to meet you and your wonderful family someday.

Neat to see you were on TV.
I do have one question for you though you say that everyone can eat the way you all do. That no matter how small the budget its still do able. I have to disagree with you.
There are 5 of us in my family. We are a single income home schooling family that loves the Lord. We also live on a very tight extremely modest budget, however our grocery budget for a month is 200 dollars. I would love to see you work everything out for us the same way you have. Its not do able at all.
We live in a very rural area, where organics is extremely expensive. There isn’t a huge demand for them, and we also live where we do NOT have access to Azure Standard.
Now we do grow and acre garden a year, putting up TONS of things, we do have our own chickens,we slaughter my fathers cows for beef, and he also raising natural pork. So we are very blessed with those things. However buying ONLY organic and nothing else is just not in our budget. Raw milk cost us 4 dollars a gallon.
I would love to see you do a series on affording nourishing foods on 50.00 a week. Also, we do not qualify for any government assitance nor would we want it.
I am just saying I would love to see how you could make it work with 50.00 a week to feed 5. Thats two adults and three children under the age 8.
I would love to see a post on what you would do if you only had 50.00 a week for groceries. What you would let go of, and what you would keep?
    thanks

I love your question and will put on my list of posts to write (eventually!). I think others will be very interested to know the same thing!

I see where your disagreement comes in, but please know that the TV guy was here interviewing me for one and a half hours…and then he edited and condensed all the stuff I said down to 58 seconds!! I didn’t say that no matter what your income is, you can eat like WE DO. I did say that no matter what your income is, you can eat a HEALTHY DIET. With all the cutting and pasting and clipping he did, it may have come out like I think everyone can and should eat like we do. Of COURSE that isn’t possible. We all have completely different sources for foods and different prices.

Anyway, just wanted to clear that up. :) Thanks for the great question!

Anyway, I’m so glad you got to speak up like that. I’m on my own mission to transform our family’s diet step by step as much as I can do here in Thailand. Which isn’t the easiest, since not everything is available, or exported at double or more what it costs in the states, but every little bit helps. Go Laura! All Praise to God. :)

OH MY WORD WOMAN! You live in YORK??? I’m in Beaver Crossing :) While I had recently discovered you were in Nebraska, I assumed it to be out West somewhere (and you and I BOTH know that York county is not western NE. We still have trees. And hills. And stores. ;). How funny! Love your blog. You’ve got my style of humor. And you strike an awesome balance between healthy and human! Yes, I’ve been a lurker (I’m bad about that!). And if you’re wondering why I’m commenting on this almost 3 weeks later, let’s just say that my google reader has been a bit neglected. Because I’m all organized like that. And I would tell you how awesome the news story was, except I haven’t watched it yet. Because I’m waiting for it to load. Because Windstream has not cared enough about my lack of speedy internet to run a broadband line by my house yet, LOL. Maybe I’ll run into you when I’m shopping in York sometime ;)
