Health Insurance…Or Not?

April 11, 2008 by Laura 17 Comments

I sort of have a love/hate relationship with health insurance.

I love it when it actually does something to help us (which is rare…but we have had a few times when it has actually paid for something).

I don’t love it during all the times that it doesn’t do anything (except take our money for premiums…and then not cover anything) Grr.

Now that we’ve started using more natural health options, our health insurance really doesn’t seem to be worth having. Insurance companies tend to freak out when you use the word “natural.” Yikes!

We’ve started looking into Christian Healthcare Ministries. With this program, the money we pay each month actually goes directly to another family with medical bills. If we were ever in need, this organization would help us directly, thanks to the sharing of other Christian families. We love that concept, and it just seems to make so much sense.

Christians helping Christians. Love it.

So, I’m wondering…what experiences do all of you have with health insurance…or alternative ideas like Christian Healthcare Ministries?

What are your thoughts on how we as Christians should best be using our money in this area?

Share with me your ideas and opinions!!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How we save thousands on health insurance every year
~~~~~~~~~~~~~UPDATE~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It’s been a few years since I originally wrote this post. Since then, we jumped aboard with Christian Healthcare Ministries and haven’t looked back.

It has been fantastic!

We’ve saved thousands of dollars every year using this. They’ve met our needs fully. They have been wonderful to work with through medical issues we’ve had. My favorite: They didn’t worry about pre-existing conditions.

I highly recommend you look into this for your family!

Our family of six pays only $135/month for Bronze Coverage. That is perfect for our family since we choose alternative medicine if at all possible. Instead of paying high monthly premiums that cover nothing for our family, we pay a very low monthly premium and put money in savings to cover a deductible if we need it and to cover our chiropractor or natural doctor bills as needed.

With the cost of health insurance rising, the coverage getting worse, and the frustration mounting – look into Christian Healthcare Ministries. We are so thankful God has provided this!

Christian Healthcare Ministries

P.S. Many have looked into Christian Healthcare Ministries since I posted this. It seems that if you give them our insurance number, our family will get a referral bonus which would cover the cost one month of fees for us. What a wonderful perk! If you feel this is a good option for you, our referral number is 145625. Thanks! :)

Opportunities Right Under My Nose…

April 3, 2008 by Laura 5 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

For the past several weeks, I’ve been praying and pondering about what it means to surrender yourself and give your entire self to Jesus in service.

We want to live frugally…be generous…think more of other’s needs…

This week, I was so busy pondering how I could serve better…that I almost missed the fact that God was saying…”Uh, Laura…I’ve got some opportunities right here for you. You wanna stop thinking so hard about it…and just get up and start doing something?”

Funny how God works sometimes, isn’t it?

I was literally sitting at my computer working on a blog post about surrendering myself…and the phone rang. The caller was a gal who is… well…high maintenence. She calls often, has many negative things to say…doesn’t want to hear anything positive that I have to say…and she’s hard to get off the phone with.

So I’m listening to her go on and on…while looking longingly at my computer (you know, so I can blog about surrendering myself)…and my husband walks in. I give him the look…the one that tells him who I’m on the phone with. (With my look, I was trying to communicate something like, “Start the house on fire…so that I’ll have an excuse to get off the phone!”)

My sweet husband smiled sympathetically, shrugged, and whispered to me, “Compassion.”

Boom. Just what I needed to hear.

Thank you, Matt.

Maybe…since this gal I’m listening to has so few people in her life who care about her…I could just relax and think about what this phone call is doing for her…and just surrender myself and be an encouragement…

The next day, I hesitantly signed up to deliver Meals on Wheels…thinking about how difficult it might be to lug all the boys around in the van…but knowing that there were slots to be filled…

(Why is it that I was only thinking about how it might inconvenience me…)

Well, it ended up being such a great experience. The boys took turns going up the the doors with the meals…and the folks were so happy to see my handsome little servants…

We enjoyed it so much that we signed up to do it again yesterday…and we plan to do it again next week.

(Now, I will pause here and say that there are certain seasons in our lives that make doing certain things more of a stress than anything else…and family comes first. And…while I was happy to listen this time to the gal who called and talked for way too long…it’s still okay for me to screen my calls so that I’m not on the phone with her too often…because again…family comes first.)

But here’s what I’m learning:

Sometimes you just need to stop wondering about what God might want you to be doing…and just get with it and do something!

To Give…or to Give More…

March 27, 2008 by Laura 7 Comments

Many of us are careful with our money…

Here’s what I want to know.

I want to know what it means to give.

I mean really give.

My husband and I have been reading a book called Irresistible Revolution, by Shane Claiborne.

irresistiblerevolution2.jpg

This author is completely challenging the way I think…

About my life and my priorities.

About what I have and what I do with what I have.

About who Christians are and what it really means to be the church.

So many thoughts are really swirling around in my head  (I know, scary…).

But I’m really questioning…

What does it look like to truly give of yourself? To be Christlike in a world that is full of materialism and greed?

What kind of world might we live in if we all start looking outward more? If we rely on God for our basic needs, and let Him use us to meet the needs of those around us?

I think that many (most) people already think that they are doing enough. And some people are really just doing nothing.

But really…REALLY…what might happen in this world if we all just let go of all of our stuff and just became givers?

I would love to hear your ideas on this topic.

Please walk this journey with me and let’s examine this together. I highly encourage you to read this book.

I want to be a part of this irresistible revolution…in which we begin to understand what it is to give like Christ gave of himself.

As I continue to read this book, I’ll be posting more of my thoughts, questions and suggestions…

But I would really love it if you have read this book or are interested in reading it…for you to join in the search to help “figure it all out”.

God is calling us to something more…what is it?

Flowers?! For ME??!!

March 14, 2008 by Laura 6 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I can’t remember exactly…but I think the last time my husband brought me flowers was…

About three years…no…maybe when…no…hmmm…I can’t remember.

It’s just not something we do. We kinda avoid the whole commercialism of Valentines day, and well…

When and if we’re gonna spend money on a gift for each other…we kinda want to make it something worth spending money on that will be useful and not something that’s gonna, well…die in a few days.

And I’m okay with that…because while I love flowers and think they are beautiful…I’m so stinkin’ practical that if I think of the cost of flowers…I’ll start tallying up how many gallons of milk or how many dozen eggs I could have bought with the money someone spent on roses and I just get wierd.

And I know my husband loves me because he shows it to me everyday in ways that no amount of flowers could ever say. (even pink flowers)

So now that you know how often we don’t buy things around here….

Imagine my surprise and joy to see my husband peek into the kitchen one day this week when he came home for lunch with a sweet little bouquet for me.

WOW!

I think I’m still smiling. And getting over the shock. And smiling.

He said he was proud of me and just wanted to do something extra special. That’s all.

Wow.

Well…they are beautiful and of the lily family and of course he picked a pink one to go in the mix because he knows I love pink.

myflowerssm.JPG

I will treasure them for as long as they live…and I will treasure the memory for a long time after that…

Because I know that I will probably not be greeted at lunchtime with flowers again for quite some time.

And that’s what makes this little splurge on flowers so special.

So my Frugal Friday encouragement is…if you splurge often on things like flowers, or eating out, or a new toy…the splurge loses it’s special-ness. But, if every once in a great while you splurge just a little…it will mean so much.

So, keep the special things special. You’ll appreciate it so much more.

Having said all that…who do you think had a peach cobbler waiting for him at lunch the day after the flowers? Yeah…now who’s smiling?!

Email…and Kids

frugalfridays.jpg

Recently, my two older boys got themselves each an email account…

They have had SO much fun emailing their buddies back and forth  (and then calling each other on the phone right away to let each other know that they just sent an email…)  :)

And sometimes they email our family members…

What aunt or uncle or grandparent doesn’t love that?!

We’ve decided it’s a super way for our big kids to learn more about computers and to learn to write…you know – complete sentences…equipped with capital letters and punctuation and everything. They don’t even complain about this kind of “writing” like they sometimes do about other writing assignments.

And, my most favorite way to use email with the kids?

Emailing back and forth with Mom and Dad!

I’ve had so much fun surprising them with an email letting them know how proud I am of their hard work that day, or how great they did on their math assignment, or whatever.

Here’s my email to my oldest son a couple of days ago…

Asa,

You are SO the  best 10 year old boy EVER!!

Thanks for making lunch and helping with everything else while I didn’t feel well.

Love you,

Mom

And here’s his reply:

Hi Mom! You are SO the best 34 year old Mom EVER. HeHe  Asa

Isn’t he “oh, so clever”?

I should get him started on a blog.

In the meantime…I’ll just enjoy this completely free way to send encouragement to my kids…and this great tool to get my kids writing more!

It All Adds Up

frugalfridays.jpg

A couple of months ago, I began babysitting for two extra little ones.

Very part time.

I felt like it was something I could do to help out a little.

At first…I felt like I was working very hard for very little pay…and asked myself…is it worth it?

I certainly didn’t want it to take away from my own family’s needs.

Not for the tiny bit of extra income it provided.

But, now we’re into a nice little routine with it…and my kids take turns helping and playing and chasing the little ones. They are learning more ways to serve…

So that in and of itself has made it worth it.

The families that we are babysitting for have both voiced their satisfaction with the comfort they feel knowing their babies are safe in our care.

And, the amount that I get paid per hour? Well, it all adds up.

I can make that extra cash go a long way at the store.

And I feel so grateful that God always provides…even in these little ways.

It always adds up to big blessings.

El Cheapo Birthday Present

February 22, 2008 by Laura 3 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Last Friday, our second son Justus turned eight.

When asked what he wanted for his birthday he had two requests:

Wool Socks and a SwitchFoot CD that is all his own.

Okay first – wool socks? Are we raising this kid to be practical or what? (How cute is HE?)
justusbday3sm.JPG

And second…we already have a SwitchFoot CD…and we just didn’t like the idea of spending $15 for him to have his very own.

SO, I bought a pack of five blank CDs…for $5! and wrapped them up.

When he opened them, we told him that not only could Daddy make him a Switchfoot CD by using our computer to burn it onto one of these blank discs…he could choose four more of his favorite CDs for Daddy to burn. Then he’d have FIVE of his very own CD’s (for way less than the price of one NEW CD).
justusbday4sm.JPG

Justus has had SO much fun with his birthday gift…and Daddy is even teaching him how to “rip” and “burn” the CDs. (Of course, everyone here thinks it’s so cool that these procedures have such awesome names…who wouldn’t want permission to rip and burn things!?)

While I (the lone female of the house) didn’t get into the ripping and burning…I got to do the fun cutesy part of printing out labels for the CDs and covers for the cases. Justus LOVES them!
justuscds1sm.JPG

Ah, I love working together with my family to make inexpensive and SUPER fun gifts!

And I love that my kids are so thrilled with these gifts!

And I LOVE that we created 5 CDs for $5!!

(P.S. You know it’s only legal to copy CDs if you bought and own them…right? Hey, we’ve got pirates around here aplenty….but we never pirate anything! Okay, just wanted to clear that up.)

The Story of My Socks (or, The Most Boring Blog Ever Written)

February 14, 2008 by Laura 2 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I have a pair of wool socks. They are pink.

I love them and wear them all the time (and I wash them occasionally too).

I only have one pair.

And I have worn them so much that they have holes in the heels.

They have had a bunch more at Walmart, but I’ve been waiting for them to go on clearance so I don’t have to pay $8 for them.

So,  last week, they were finally on sale. For $4.50.

So I got another pair.

But I was really hoping they’d be cheaper than $4.50.

And that’s why I only got one pair.

So, I was telling my husband about my purchase, and he said, “Why did you only get one pair? You wear them all the time. And they were almost half price?”

Huh. Why DID I only get one pair?

Because I was hoping to only have to pay $2.50 or something else wonderful for my pink wool socks.

And then it occurred to me. I’m not just being frugal, I’m being CHEAP. We’re talking about socks here. Not something frivolous and silly.

Socks.

I live in Nebraska where it snows for 13 months out of the year. Wool socks aren’t frivolous or silly.

And the fact that they’re pink and warm makes me really like this unsilly and unfrivolous item.

So good grief, I’m gonna go back to Walmart and get me some more pink wool socks.

That is, if they have any…because everyone ELSE probably recognized that they were getting a really good deal at $4.50 and snatched them up already!

Anyone else have trouble being cheap when they really mean to only be frugal?

Read about FRUGAL ideas at Biblical Womanhood today.

And thanks for sticking around to read the most uninteresting blog EVER:  The Blog About My Socks.

Brace yourself. Next week, I might just go a little crazy and blog about my bath robe.

Family Fun Night

February 8, 2008 by Laura 2 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

For me, it doesn’t get much better than a quiet night at home.

Huh. I have four kids…boys to be exact…I’m not really sure why I used the phrase:  quiet night at home.

Anyway, for today’s Frugal Friday tip, I thought I would share a fun, free way for your family to spend time together (quiet, loud…whatever)!

Our favorite family night activity is to play the “Acting Out Game”. Here are reasons why it’s a perfect game for both parents and kids:

1. Tired parents get to sit down the whole time and smile at their children.

2. Active children get to use their energy to be creative and use up all that drama they have built up inside.

3. It’s free.

It’s much like charades…and I don’t claim to be some genius to have figured out this “Acting Out Game”. But I’m tellin’ ya…it’s a great way to relax with your family for the evening.

So, here’s how we play:

Parents sit down and put your feet up (like the game so far?!).

Decide the order of who goes first, second and so on.

Child number one either thinks of something to act out, or one of the parents whispers an idea to them. It’s usually something simple like usually like planting a garden, shoveling snow, scrambling eggs…that type of thing.

The child acts it out and everyone else makes guesses about what he’s doing until we figure it out. Then the next child gets a turn.

Even our littlest guy gets out there and takes a turn…he’s been playing since he could walk. (Although sometimes he says what he’s doing while he’s doing it, or right after we’ve whispered the idea in his ear!)

Sometimes we parents play too…just depends on our energy level! The kids LOVE it when Mommy or Daddy takes a turn! (I don’t always sit around and watch my kids have all the fun!)

My kids are always coming up with really great things to act out.

And, maybe it’s just me….but boy, do we have some talented actors at our house!

(Yeah, it’s probably just me.)
