Clean Your Ceiling Fans

July 20, 2011 by Laura 63 Comments

Included on my Two Week Tackle list is:  Deep Clean the Entire House.

I don’t think I’ll be able to accomplish deep cleaning the entire house before August 1. But I have been able to get several things done so far, including washing curtains and cleaning ceiling fans.

Time to fess up – how long has it been since you’ve cleaned the ugly layer(s) of dust off your ceiling fans?

It seems that it doesn’t take long for mine to get nasty, then cobwebs start to streak from one blade to the next to the ceiling to the light bulbs. Yuck. And yet I seem to always forget about cleaning them. I mean, how often do we stand in a room and just look up at the ceiling? I do believe we homemakers should begin making time to stare at our ceilings more regularly.

Yeah right. And when might we schedule that in? Perhaps after we’ve passed out on our living room floors at the end of the night after a long day of chasing kids and mopping up spilled (fill in the blank)?

Anyway, I finally remembered my ceiling fans and got a round tuit. To mark the occasion, I had Justus (age 11) take a picture.

As you can imagine, he asked, “You really want me to take a picture of you standing on a chair dusting the ceiling fan?!”

Yes, I do ask my children to take pictures of strange things quite often. I’m surprised he questioned it actually. He should be used to my crazy picture taking requests by now.

Do you think there will be support groups someday for BKs? (Bloggers Kids)

Or do you think that children such as mine, once they are married, will walk into the room and see that their wives are under the table scrubbing jelly off the underside of a chair – and then naturally go grab the camera? Or perhaps one of them will notice that his wife has produced a lovely ball of bread dough and ask her to stand in better light so he can get several shots at different angles? Oh dear.

I think I need to start thinking about how to prepare my sons’ future wives.

But really, I want to know – when is the last time you cleaned your ceiling fans??!

Clean Car? Question #71

October 1, 2010 by Laura 47 Comments

I don’t think about it very much…until someone else rides in our van with us. THAT is when I realize that there are muffin crumbs, little rocks, a few papers from the boys’ Bible classes, a fruit leather wrapperand a little lego head on my van floor.  And that’s on a good day.

I WISH I were better at managing the messiness inside our vehicles. On the other hand, I have so many other things to do that cleaning the inside (or outside for that matter) of our van is really a low priority for me. Therefore, I don’t think about it very much until someone hops in for a ride. Suddenly my van interior gets a whole lot filthier in my eyes.

Aah, and the other day I got into Matt’s truck because we had traded vehicles for some reason. Once I adjusted the seat so that I could reach the pedals, I looked up and was shocked to see that a bunch of birds seemed to have recently had a big poop fest all over his windshield. Yowza!

Anyhoo…I know that others are much more concerned than we are about the cleanliness inside (and outside) of their vehicles. While ours aren’t trash cans…neither are they what anyone would consider clean. I NEED to send our boys out there with our very powerful vacuum…and yet I never seem to remember. I guess as long as we can see out of our windshields, we really don’t care that much about taking time to clean our vehicles. (Which means, of course, that we did remove the evidence of the bird splatter competition.)

My question for you today is….

Are you good at keeping the insides of your vehicles clean? Do you have them detailed? Or are you like us and have vehicles that allow you to write notes to each other in the dust on the dashboard?

Okay…it’s really not that bad.

ehem

What Matters Is My Kids

September 16, 2010 by Laura 49 Comments

There are many things in my life that are important. There are many things that have to be done. There are great events to attend. There are many people in my life that I love and want to spend time with. There are hurting people everywhere. There are so many hurting people that my heart aches to feed them all, clothe them all, counsel them all and house them all. But I can’t do it all.

I’ll choose to let go of the guilt.

I have to make choices and above all I have to choose my kids. They are the ministry God has given me and when all is said and done…what matters is my kids.

It doesn’t matter that no matter how hard I try, the laundry is never caught up. It doesn’t matter that the dishes constantly pile up by the sink, even though I’m pretty sure I wash dishes all day. It doesn’t matter that there are dirty windowsills and…what is that stuck to the pantry door? Oh well…it doesn’t matter.

What matters is my kids.

It doesn’t matter that I can barely get through writing this article because my kids keep coming in and interrupting me. They want to tell me about the game they’re playing together. They want to remind me about what happened at the soccer game. They want to ask what I’m making for dinner. I’ll stop what I’m doing and look at their faces and I’ll talk to them because it truly is a joy that they love talking to me. The article can wait.

What matters is my kids.

In the big picture, it really is okay that the emails are piled up even though I hate it that so many people have to wait for weeks for me to respond. It really is okay that I’m never caught up with my work and it really is okay that even though I’m working really, really hard…I can’t do it all. I’ll stop sweating all the details in my life that cause me to worry and get worn out. The details don’t matter.

What matters is my kids.

I’ll let go of the guilt and the pressure I feel about all the jobs around me that are left undone and instead focus my heart on my husband. I’ll cherish him and serve him and meet his needs and enjoy him. I’ll make our very limited time together meaningful because keeping our relationship alive and sweet is incredibly important.

Because more than anything, it matters to the kids.

And they don’t care that we’re having pancakes and eggs for dinner again or that the living room is covered with boxes and bubble wrap mixed with lego men and building blocks. They don’t care that there are scuffs on the walls (they put them there after all) and they don’t care if the scuffs stay there forever.

What matters to them is the security of knowing that their mom loves them and takes care of them and laughs with them and trains them and prays with them and reads to them and talks to them. What matters to them is their mom understands one very important thing which is…

What matters is my kids.

Clean Air?

July 28, 2010 by Laura 15 Comments

When is the last time you changed the air filter in your heater/air conditioner? Can’t remember? Yes, I understand. We’ve been the same way. I can hear some of you right now. “You mean we’re supposed to CHANGE those?!”

Yes, you see, nasty stuff gets pulled in through your duct work and the handy-dandy filter catches it before it gets to your heating/air system. If the filter gets too full of the nasty stuff, the system gets bogged down and is way less efficient. (I don’t know about you, but when I get bogged down, I am also way less efficient.)  ;)

Maybe some of you have some sort of plan in place to remember when it’s time to change the filter in your heating and air unit, but I’m guessing that the majority of us don’t. For us, it is hardly even on our radar of things to think about. There are SO MANY THINGS to think about every day, you know?

And then when we finally do think about it, we have to figure out what size filter we need and figure out who carries the filter we use, and it’s just sort of a headache.

We’ve recently been in contact with Prime Time Filters.com. They are a fantastic company for many reasons, but the best one is that they take all of the brain cell usage out of changing your air filter! I don’t know about you, but I feel very maxed-out on my brain cell usage. Please, please don’t make me keep track of one more thing!!! Prime Time Filters becomes your brain when it comes to changing your air filter! Hallelujah!!

Here’s how it works:  You create a subscription with Prime Time Filters. You let them know what variety of filter you need and how often you need to change your filter. You let them know the size you need. THEN, Prime Time Filters (your new air filter brain!) will automatically send you the filter at the designated time. It comes right to your door step without you having to order it or think or anything. Then, when the nice delivery man hands it to you, you realize that it is now time to change your air filter. You change it, and then you promptly forget all about air filters because, thanks to Prime Time Filters, you are now able to free your brain cells to remember other important facts (like the names of your children). You will not have to think about changing your air filter again until another one arrives on your door step a few months later according to the time frame you set up in your subscription with Prime Time Filters. What a lovely (and clean) concept!

Not only does Prime Time Filters make changing your air filter incredibly convenient, they are affordable. Ooh, and you know what else they do? They allow you to set up a subscription for someone else…like your parents or grandparents or an elderly neighbor who needs the service but might not be able to set it up themselves.

I love that Prime Time Filters is a family owned and operated company. I’ve worked with them both via email and over the phone and they are kind, helpful and knowledgeable. We had a stink of a time figuring out what filter size we needed. They worked patiently with us and were finally able to figure out the exact size. These people know what they’re doing.

Here’s what the owner of the Prime Time Filters has to say:

The biggest reason people are signing up for the service is the convenience but they are quickly recognizing the benefits of cleaner air, less dust, lower utility bills and peace of mind because we’ve taken the headache out of this important task.

I highly recommend that you check out Prime Time Filters because on so many levels, they make it possible for you to breathe easier. ;)

Gratituesday: Clearing out some Clutter!

April 19, 2010 by Laura 21 Comments

Guess what I’m thankful for today? Junk! Clutter! Stuff! Boxes and boxes of stuff!

Actually, what I’m really, REALLY thankful for is that my junk, clutter and boxes and boxes of stuff are gone. Gone I tell you! Far, far away from my house and out of my life! Shew! What a relief to have hundreds of items cleared out of my house!

Over the weekend, some friends of ours were having a rummage sale to raise money for their kids to go on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic. Over the past three years, I’d been socking “stuff” we don’t use anymore down in our basement for a future yard sale. Ugh, but I really didn’t want to take the time or put forth the effort to have that yard sale. So the stuff kept accumulating in our basement.

When I heard our friends were having a fund-raising rummage sale, I was SO EXCITED to take the contents of our basement over for them to sell. I didn’t care about the money I could get from my stuff – I just wanted the STUFF GONE!!! And this way the money would go toward something wonderful – a mission trip!

We spent all Friday afternoon lugging boxes upstairs and into our vehicles, then driving them over to our friend’s house and unloading them onto their porch. Check out all the loot that came out of my basement!

clutter1

I felt like all my junk couldn’t possibly amount to much…but when I checked in after the sale, the kids said they had raised a very nice amount to help with the cost of their trip! Hoorah! I got rid of a bunch of stuff…they got money for their trip!

Beyond all of that, the boys and I also spent several hours clearing out boxes and other recyclable items and getting them down to our recycling center. Suffice it to say that after this clean-out-day was over, we were all quite filthy. Filthy and clutter free!

clutter3Check out how full my van was. Now that’s a lot of boxes!

clutter2Oh, but look what I found hiding under all those boxes.
Who knew you could build a fort inside a van full of cardboard!

I love that we had such a productive day. I’m so thankful that the weather cooperated, we were all healthy and we could work hard together to clear out all that clutter! Ah, it feels so good! But look out! I’m in clean-out mode now! The kids better hide their favorite toys before I throw them in the next rummage sale box!
