“Duh” Moments

My days are full of “duh” moments. Is it just me? It seems like the older I get, the older my kids get, the more I have on my to-do list…the more “duh” moments I have.

I say “duh” to myself frequently. Like when I walk all the way to our storage room to retrieve something, but by the time I get there, I have absolutely no idea what I had intended to get. Duh. Or when I stir the wrong ingredient into the wrong bowl because I’m trying to make too many recipes at the same time. Duh. Or how about the time I stuck a wooden spoon into a running food processor. We had splinter-filled cookie dough with that smart move.  Duh.

Just last week, I had a very busy day and just so happened to be wearing a cute but long sun-dress that went all the way past my ankles. This information about my apparel is only relevant if you consider that after going out to check on my husband who was busy painting the outside of our house, I tripped on my long sundress while going up my porch-steps. (duh)  Thankfully, my shins didn’t suffer too much for this move, and I’m almost certain none of the neighbors were outside to see my gracefulness.

But that’s not really why I told you about the sun-dress. You just needed to know about how I tripped over the sundress so that you could understand my next and very silly “duh” moment.

You see, a couple of hours after my graceful sundress-tripping-up-the-porch-steps incident, I had to make a stop at the post office. There are a good 10-12 cement steps in front of the post office. Because I’m never (sometimes) one to make the same mistake twice, I was very careful to hold up the bottom of my dress as I decended the post office steps after mailing my package. I was able to avoiding a foot-tangled-up-in-sundress-in-front-of-post-office mishap and managed to make it down the cement steps with both feet on the ground and all was well.

I was focused on rejoicing in my success – so focused that I went to the nearest silver mini-van in front of the post office, opened the door and hopped right in. Aaaa!! (Yes, I believe that was exactly how I said it.)

Wrong mini-van.

Duh.

(It was way too clean to be my mini-van – that should have been my first clue.)

Three parking spaces down was MY silver mini-van, which I am quite sure I made it to in record time (after looking both ways twice to see who had witnessed my “duh” moment.)

The minute I got home, my husband, from his perch on the ladder while painting, said, “We just got a phone call. Malachi was supposed to be at a birthday party 15 mintues ago.”

Oh duh.

Yep, the “duh” moments just never stop around here.

You are not alone! I was planning on going to the store. Kissed the husband and kiddies, walked out to the car only to realize I had no keys.DUH Or how about making lemon pie but having no lemons or even lemon juice in the house. DUH Or forgetting to feed my family dinner one night?!? Seriously, I though we had eaten. I remember thinking about spaghetti but I never actually made it…about 7pm the kids said “whats for dinner Mom?”….DUH!!! LOL

Oh my it is so nice to know you are not perfect. I know that isn’t the nicest thing, but facing a day of just cleaning, cooking, and schlepping children around, it was great to read about someone else not quite getting it all right all the time.

Hope your shins heal up quick.

My most recent in a long, long line of “duh” moments happened just the other day. We had an appointment with the eye doctor to get new lenses put in my son’s glasses. It takes an hour to drive to the eye doctor’s office, so I was in a big rush making sure all the kids were in the car on time. It wasn’t until we were on the road and halfway there that I realized I had completely forgotten to bring my son’s glasses with us. DUH!

I have those all the time. As for going into a room and not knowing what i’m there for, thanks to a dear sweet comedian named jerry Clower (deceased) we call those thinking about the hereafter.
He told a joke about a preacher going to see a dear sweet old lady. He asked her, “Do you ever think about the hereafter?’
And she replied, “oh, yes. I think about that all the time. I go into a room and stop and think, Now what am I here after?”

As I get older I tend to think about the ‘here after’ a lot more. And I too have tried to get in the wrong car. My son almost always knows which car is ours so I follow his lead now.

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve picked up something at the grocery store that I thought I was out of, only to find that I had purchased it a few weeks ago, and put it in the freezer, pantry, etc. Duh!

I could share so many embarrassing moments. I thought yours were very funny, and its so good to laugh at yourself sometimes!
I once tried to put the toaster away in the refrigerator, which is pretty mild compared to hopping in the wrong mini van! Too funny! Just remember God loves you all the more!

    Laura!

You just made my day! I have so many duh moments that I can’t even keep track, but I am so very hard on myself and most of the time very mad at myself for being so stupid!

Thanks for reminding me that we are all human, mistakes happen and I need to lighten up! LOL!!!!

Isn’t it nice to be human? I call it “mommy brain.” I have left home several times with no shoes….now that is an impossible outing. I hide things from myself often. While looking for them, I walk through the house and have to come to where I started to even remember what I went for! My favorite line is “Now if I were me, where would I have put that?”

I have so many I don’t know where to start….:)

Alright, here’s the best one. LOL

I’ve been doing milk kefir for a couple of months now and just love it and am honestly fascinated by it. Well, about a month ago, some milk soured in the fridge and I had my grains resting in there. I dumped the milk out; Lo and behold, the next day some half and half soured and some more milk. Once again, I just bought more milk. Finally, on the 3rd day I was convinced my milk kefir was taking over my fridge and just culturing all my milk! I was quite sad about it all as I just love my milk kefir but thought it must be because the weather has been hot and my grains were so powerful. I contacted the friendly people at Cultures for Health and she asked me to check my fridge thermostat. DUH!!!

Our fridge was way to hot at 52 degrees and thanks to my handy husband, the problem was fixed within a couple days and I replaced all the contents of my fridge. We’re lucky we didn’t get ill as it was that warm for at least 3 days. The funny thing is, I was more upset when I thought my milk kefir was taking over my fridge and I couldn’t make milk kefir anymore than when I had to throw everything out! :)

So, the moral of the story is, you’re not the only one.

I am right there with you – I have duh moments all the time. It’s frustrating, because I know I used to be a smart, competent person – then I got married and had kids. lol – what I want to know is do men have these duh moments too? Or is it just us women who are losing our brain cells?

I do that thing also, where you walk into another room and forget what you went there for. I found that if you say it out loud “Laundry Basket” then when you get there you can remember better. You sound kinda crazy but it helps! This also works when you put something important down… say “Keys on the shelf” and it is easier to find later!

lol! I love reading about other people’s duh moments…makes me feel better. :) The other day I told DD that we had to go to Lowes when DH gets home. She looked at me kinda funny and said I was just there. I said, oh, I meant Staples. We need to go to Staples. So, DH gets home and we’re on our way. On the way, I told him about telling DD I had to go to Lowes. He says, where ARE you going? I realized I was in the turn lane…I was heading to Lowes. So, I put my blinker on to get back in the straight lane (which tied up the turn lane). He asks me again where we’re going. My repsonse? Lo–al-Mart. Good thing he was with me…we might’ve never gotten to Staples!!

I have wondered more than once what was wrong with my key and why couldn’t I get into my green minivan – duh, of course, NOT MINE! One day we worked for twenty minutes trying to help a lady get into her car – she couldn’t find the right key, only to find out hers was the identical car in the next row! (the pictures of a multitude of differently complected small children hanging from the mirror should have “keyed” us into the problem earlier), but duh!

LOL!!! You have all made my day….so many stories to share; so little time :) I’ll pick one: we had recently purchased a new mini van with a remote!! I ran into a store and came out and hit the “unlock” button several times and it wouldn’t work. I started freaking out because I didn’t know how I was going to get in the van. I was going to call my husband to ask him what to do, but my cell phone was locked in the van. Lo and behold, a teen employee came out to sweep the walk and I told her of my desperate situation and she says, in a disbelieving voice, “why don’t you just use the key?”………I haven’t been back since!! DUH!

Last week, I dropped my kids off at church for camp. Then I walked over to my van and noticed a small dent I’d never noticed before. I shrugged it off and reached for the door. That’s when I realized the van was immaculate. Definitely NOT mine! Oops! Do you by chance have a Honda Odyssey, too? Every other person has one! This also happened to me years ago when I had a common-colored Honda Accord. DUH!

Great story Laura, thanks for starting the ball rolling, it was great to read everyone’s comments and have a great laugh! I sure needed it today.
The first time I came across your site was when you told the story of putting away the Christmas decorations, all I had to do was think “Christmas” and I went into gales of laughter for months after; everyone should read that one, it was very funny.
I sure appreciate you and your site! May God give you the grace and mercy to continue this for many years.

ohhh girl, I can so relate. I have those duh moments almost every day. The getting into the wrong minivan was priceless and came at the right time. Last week I went to get my haircut and came out, 6 white minivans parked side by side, and got in the wrong minivan also. Mine was three parking spaces down. oh I am glad I am not alone =D

Thank you for sharing your “duh” moments!

Although I’ve had many “duh” moments over the years there is one that stands out in my mind…
I was a teenager and still living at home. Mom had made a great meal and everyone was sitting down at the table. I realized that no one had gotten the ketchup, so I stood up and walked over to the fridge to get it. I opened the door. Someone said something to me so I turned around to answer them, then turned back to the fridge. I stood there for a very one time searching for the ketchup bottle. Everyone was watching me and waiting for me to sit down so we could pray and start eating.
Finially my mom asked me what I was looking for. I turned around frustrated and motioned with my hands (because I tend to “talk” with my hands a lot) saying “I can’t find the ketchup bottle.” My brother pointed out I was holding it in my hand.
I had picked it when I first opened the fridge door but being distracted when asked a question, it didn’t even register that I had actually picked it up! lol!

Oh wow, of course I can relate to this. Like when I was trying to make those homemade chocolate chips. I couldn’t get the sugar to dissolve so, duh, why not use the immersion blender, well duh, it’s plastic, it melted.
By the way, while trying to make my chick-fil-a costume I set the scissors down, and I still haven’t found them.
These duh moments are certainly fun though, (I think) since it’s always good for a laugh.

DUH! We were having a family dinner & I was deep in conversation with my Dad as I poured gravy “on my dinner.” Dad had a very strange look on his face & when I looked down I realized why! I had filled my wine glass right up to the top…..with gravy. DUH!
