Applesauce Bread {Gifts in a Jar ~ Day One}

Gifts in a Jar idea number one is one of our very favorites – Applesauce Bread.

This bread smells and tastes like Christmas. It’s a perfect gift to give this time of year.

I have loved learning that it is okay to bake in a jar. I believe actual canning jars (like Ball or Kerr) will work best for this (as opposed to recycled spaghetti sauce jars and the like) because canning jars are thicker. And I prefer to play it safe by placing my jars into a 9×13 pan with a little water in them before placing them in the oven.

Like this…

Otherwise, you bake the bread in a jar, just like you would bake it in a loaf pan. I didn’t adjust the baking time or temperature. It’s as easy as mixing the bread and baking it in a jar! Find our Applesauce Bread recipe here. (I used 2 pint sized jars for this recipe, filling the jars 3/4 full of batter.)

Allow the bread to cool completely before attaching a lid.

    How full do you fill the jars?? Also what sized canning jars did you use?

      Oops, can’t believe I forgot that relevant information. I’ve added it to the post (thanks to you!) and I’ll give you the info here too: I used 2 pint sized jars for this recipe, filling the jars 3/4 full of batter. :)

    Do you eat it out of there with a spoon??? Haha! Does it slide out so it can be sliced?

      You sure can just eat it out of there with a spoon. But you can also slide it out and slice it if you want to share. :)

    Thanks for this series on gifts in a jar. We always do homemade foodie stuff for gifts as opposed to things no one wants:) Totally making some of these for the neighbors!

    If you put a canning lid on when taking it out of the oven to cool, it will seal just like canned whatever! it will keep for some time, because you have effectively ‘canned’ it. My mom did this when i was a kid.

      I’d say about one week, or longer in the fridge or freezer.

    Does this travel well? From CT to Colorado?

      Sure, it should do just fine! Maybe just pack it in a cooler to keep it from getting too warm. :)
