Gratituesday: All These Boys

During the time we’ve had a break from all of our normal routines to travel and see family…and during the time we’ve spent catching up at home and relaxing (relaxing?)…I have been enjoying my boys so, SO much.

While we were in CA, we got to watch some Game Show Network. All the way home and in the days we’ve been home, the boys have been making up their own version of Lingo and Family Feud and other games. (I’ve won $25,000 several different times in the past few days because I am one amazing Lingo player, yes I am.)

What I’m really grateful for today is that our boys play so well together.

Of course they have moments when I have to holler things like, “Heya buddy…if your brother is SCREAMING when you’re doing that…it probably means he wants you to STOP!”

But, even with the fights, they are each other’s best friends. It’s a joy to watch.

Yesterday they spent hours building and playing in a fort that took up the entire upstairs hallway. They were so excited about it and had so much fun that I didn’t even complain every time I had to get down on all fours to crawl through the fort in order to go to the bathroom or switch out laundry. ;)

Here are some pictures our friend Tyler took of these four great buddies playing in the snow a few weeks ago:

Brrr! That is one cold nap.

Brick in the New Year With a Little Fun From the Coppinger Boys

Happy New Year from my family to yours! Welcome to 2009!

Here are some fun pictures taken of the boys while we were in California during Christmas. For those of you who live in cold, brown and white wintery places like I do…let me point out to you that those trees in the background are GREEN. Yes, in December.

boyssm.jpg
This is one of my favorites of the boys. However we had already taken big family pictures, small family pictures AND cousin pictures…so by the time we started taking brother pictures, Elias decided he was done. Done I tell you. Grr.

boys2sm.jpg
At least Elias is looking at the camera in this one…
but Justus got distracted by now. Still cute.

boyssilly2sm.jpg
Okay, enough seriousness. Everyone be silly now.
Elias is still trying very hard to NOT smile. Stinker.

boyssilly1sm.jpg
More silliness…

I’ll show you more of our family pictures soon. In the meantime…the boys have a little something more to share with you to help you “brick” in the new year…

Matt and the boys enjoy making up their own jokes. One night recently as Matt was tucking the boys into bed, one of them asked if they could make up a few jokes. He agreed and asked Elias to give him a word…any word. And Elias said:

“Brick”

So Daddy and the boys decided to make up some Brick Jokes. Because…you know…there’s really not anything that is funnier than a brick. Am I right? ;)

The next morning they came down and started telling me their wonderful collection of brick jokes. Wow. I was impressed. (Okay, some of them are funnier than others.)

Here are a couple of my favorites:

What do you get when you throw a brick at a chicken?

Bricken Nuggets

What’s a mason’s favorite meal?

Well, Brickfast of course

A mason’s favorite veggie?

Yes, you guessed it…brickoli

Is there no end to all the ways you can make the word “brick” into a joke? Apparently not. They kept coming up with more and more.

So here…for you and whoever else you’d like to spend time telling “Brick Jokes” to is a downloadable copy of Coppinger Boy Original Brick Jokes.

Have fun and Happy New Year!!!

Painting Pumpkins – The Boys in Action

October 23, 2008 by Laura 6 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Here’s my first attempt at recording video with my new camera a few weeks ago. I thought you might enjoy watching the boys painting pumpkins (while I get up enough nerve to record myself doing something heavenly homemake-y on film for you). At least I know that the Grandma and aunts and cousins who read my blog will enjoy watching the boys!

A few disclaimers:

1. I didn’t know what I was doing when I took this. It was an experiment. You’ll notice that.
2. I haven’t learned how to edit yet. You’ll notice that.
3. You can hear my voice way better than the boys’ voices. I annoyed myself while I was watching it.
4. I talk way too much during the clip. I annoyed myself while I was watching it.
5. For some reason I decided to video a couple of the trees in our front yard while the boys were painting. If while you’re watching you see the video go from boys to trees…and you think, “wow, that was random”…you’ll be right.
6. The boys are wearing Matt’s old t-shirts for their paint shirts and they fit like dresses. You’ll notice that.
7. The reason I didn’t want to get Justus a paper plate was because I didn’t know how to stop the recording (watch video for this to make sense).

Boys Painting Pumpkins from Laura Coppinger on Vimeo.

Wow…the leaves on the trees were all still green just a few weeks ago. Now they’re all turning colors and falling off! Amazing!

Well, that was fun. Now what should I record?

To Answer Some of Your Questions…

June 16, 2008 by Laura 8 Comments

You’ve all been so encouraging as I write my posts about healthy eating…and all the other homemaking and parenting and random stuff I blog about! I love your comments and emails…KEEP THEM COMING!

I’ve received lots and lots of questions from you, and just so ya know, I’ll try to answer all of them. If it’s a question about healthy eating, I’ll try to answer it somewhere within my Getting Real With Food series. Thanks for being patient with me.

If you asked a question a long time ago about something else and I still haven’t responded….ask again. Sometimes (most of the time) I don’t even call my kids by the right name. I KNOW I’ve surely failed to respond to some of your  questions. (“A-Jus-El-Mal-Asa”…I have to go through all of them, just so that I can go back to the one I started with in the first place.)  (It’s a good thing we don’t have pets too.)

So before I lose track of these two questions from my last post about the farmer’s market, I’ll answer them now. :)

Here are the pictures I showed you of what I made last Thursday…

farmersmarket2sm1.JPG     farmersmarket1sm1.JPG

First question…

Can you tell us what the other foods are? I think I see pretzels? what else?!?!?! Also, can you tell us/show us how you package these goodies for the market?

Last week I made two batches of pretzels, one recipe of cinnamon rolls (which made five pans of eight), one batch of flourless peanut butter cookies, one batch of giant chocolate chip cookies, a pan of chocolate chip brownies, three loaves of applesauce bread, a double batch of white flour tortillas and a double batch of whole wheat tortillas. (The whole wheat tortillas turned out ugly this time…so we kept them for ourselves!)

I packaged the pretzels in five bags of five, and the rest I packaged individually so people could buy one at a time or several at once. The cinnamon rolls I slid carefully onto a paper plate then put tons of ooey gooey frosting on them and covered them with a baggie. I cut the brownies into 12 large squares and wrapped them in plastic wrap. I wrapped the giant cookies and the applesauce bread in plastic wrap also. I put the peanut butter cookies six to a plate and covered them with plastic wrap. The tortillas went into baggies in sets of eight.

We came home with only seven pretzels (I took 47…not bad!), and a few odds and ends of cookies and such. The cinnamon rolls sold out fast! (Must’ve been the ooey-gooey frosting!)  I was surprised that there wasn’t much interest in the applesauce bread. (What, they only want the unhealthy stuff?!)  Matt suggested I take samples because if people tasted it…they would WANT it!! (He’s so sweet!)  I’ll try applesauce bread one more week and if it doesn’t go well, I won’t make it anymore. (For the farmer’s market that is. I’ll SO keep making it for us!)

Next question…

The food looks fantastic! How do you find time to do all that baking with four kids? I’d love some pointers. I really enjoy baking.I would love to sell some baked goods at our local farmers market:)

If I say, “I don’t know how I do it. I’ve decided that I must be insane.” would that be discouraging? ;)

My insanity aside, I LOVE baking and I’m pretty fast in the kitchen. I have established a bit of a farmer’s market baking system that has worked pretty well so far.

First…the chocolate chip cookies freeze very well so I make them on another day when I have time and freeze them. Done. Also, I think the applesauce bread is moister and tastier on day two, so I bake it on Wednesday night before bed.

I then make sure my kitchen is clean and my ingredients are ready for a baking marathon on Thursday…

I get up early and get my first round of pretzels mixed up. While they are rising, I get the chocolate chip brownies in the oven. While they bake, I do some dishes and mix up the peanut butter cookies. As soon as the brownies come out, the cookies go in.

Then, I mix up, roll out and cook the tortillas.

By then the prezel dough is big and fat and lovely…so I start shaping and baking those. While those bake, I mix up the cinnamon rolls to rise. While they rise…I rest a while. (What a good idea.)

Once I get the cinnamon rolls ready and rising, I mix up my next batch of pretzels (I find that if I mix up a double batch at once, they just don’t do as well…that’s why I do two separate batches).

I bake my cinnamon rolls while the prezels rise…and I work on my mountain of dishes. And package up the food that is cooled enough.

After the cinnamon rolls come out of the oven, I begin shaping and baking the last round of pretzels.

When I’m done with that and the cinnamon rolls have cooled, I frost them. And then I’m done. Shew!

Where are the kids during all of this? I have no idea. Just kidding. Sort of.

No really, they are asleep for the first few hours of it, and that’s when I get a ton of it out of the way. Then they get up and eat breakfast (okay, we did cereal last week…and might just have to do that every Thursday this summer unless I make something ahead of time!). After breakfast, they just play…and I think they get dressed eventually too.

Last week, my very sweet friend Jenny called while I was baking and asked if Elias and Malachi could come over and play with her kids for the afternoon. She came and picked them up and everything. She’s awesome! The boys loved it and it made me feel less like I was neglecting anyone.

For the most part, my kids are pretty good at playing together during these times that I’m baking my brains out (well, that doesn’t sound very tasty, does it?). Or sometimes they come help me…or sometimes I’ll put them on another job doing something else. They actually really get excited about farmer’s market day…and the hardest part for them is that I’m baking all these really yummy things and not letting them eat ANY of it. The nerve.

Now…I wouldn’t want to do it everyday, because it does wear me out…and I don’t get to spend good down time with the kids…but once a week for a few weeks during the summer is good. And if I haven’t mentioned it before…I do love to bake.

Note to self about this upcoming Thursday:  Remember to eat. Good grief, I never forget to eat…but I totally forgot until about 2 pm last Thursday when I said to Matt, “Wow, I’m really starting to feel light headed.” Duh. Eating food is usually a helpful way to keep yourself upright.

I’m gonna try to remember that this week. :)

Any more questions?!

Happy Stinkin’ Birthday

June 8, 2008 by Laura 6 Comments

Remember how I mentioned that we were having a sleep-over this weekend to celebrate Asa’s birthday?

It was SO MUCH FUN!!! Everyone loved it…even me…the lone female in the house.

However…

Six boys came over ranging in ages from 11-13. And um…remember how I mentioned that maybe I should light some scented candles and air out the house before they came? *cough*

The boys began arriving at 5:00 pm on Friday. I am NOT kidding when I tell you that by 5:13 pm I began to wonder if I’d be able to make it through the night and continue to breathe at the same time. Shoooo-ey.

;)

I fed them the promised “Junk Food Buffet”…a lovely arrangement of pizza, hot dogs and french fries (with watermelon…I had to throw in some fruit!).

And then, we crammed all 12 of us into two vehicles (roll down the windows, please) and we went to the bowling alley. (We had free passes…so all the kids got to bowl for absolutely free. Wow.)

Okay, but is it just our bowling alley…or is there a universal bowling alley stink? Open the door…and you’re immediately greeted by this thick, heavy, slice-it-with-a-knife stink that grabs you around the neck and picks you up and threatens to knock you against the wall. After a moment of blinking really hard and fast and gagging a few times…then you just sort of suddenly get used to it and it becomes a part of you. After swimming in the stink for an hour and a half…you walk back out into the fresh air, relieved to be away from the deep fat fried cigarettes coated in sweaty shoes…and you think it will all be okay again. But no. The stink is now clinging to every part of you…and you can’t get away from it. It’s in your clothes, your hair, your skin, your eyelashes, your watch band and under your fingernails. If you move even slightly, a part of the stink releases itself from one of your skin pores…and you are now well aware that indeed, you stink. So, so much. And you can’t even try to get away from it. The stink has become…you.

So maybe your bowling alley doesn’t have the stink and you don’t know what I’m talking about. (I’m so happy for you.)

But we piled our stinky selves back into the van…came home and had some chocolate cheesecake. I enjoyed my cheesecake…but I gotta tell ya…I could hardly even stand to be around myself at that point. So much stink.

Having said all of that though…let me emphasise to you how much fun the party was. It was so stinkin’ much fun!

All of the boys that came are just super kids and played great together. What I appreicated most is that they all included my littler boys in their party without giving it a second thought. They let them join in all their games and they were so sweet to them. They were also all very polite to me and told me how great my food was. And trust me, there were plenty of times for them to tell me how great my food was. After the “Junk Food Buffet” and the chocolate cheesecake…we had shaved ice…and then strawberries, grapes and Pringles. (If you just keep putting food out there…it will be eaten. Wow.)  For breakfast the following morning, I made two big pans of homemade cinnamon rolls. Oh, they really appreciated me for those. (I’ll try to post the recipe soon so that you can appreciate me too.)

Asa just had a wonderful time and loved every minute of the party he planned and put together. What a great kid.

It was just a stinkin’ good time.

Who Needs to Hire Out a Circus?!

June 5, 2008 by Laura 6 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

One thing I’ve never really understood about kid’s birthday parties is why some parents feel like they need to spend a large amount of time, energy and money to make it fun.

I feel like I LIVE in a circus…and certainly when you invite extra children to the party (which of course is what makes a party a party)…it becomes even more of a circus…therefore I’ve never felt the need to spend a lot of money to bring more circus to the circus.

This weekend we’ll be celebrating Asa’s 11th birthday <gulp>…and he’s invited several boys for a sleep-over. All the boys are SO excited (in fact…I’ve heard nothing but birthday talk now for the last few hundred hours)!! The excitement comes simply because we’re having a bunch of friends over. Nothing else. We aren’t doing anything big or extravagant.

We’ll have a nice “Junk Food Buffet” for dinner…birthday cheesecake…and shaved ice. And the kids will run around like crazy in and out of the house doing all of the things boys like to do. And that’s it.

I love it that it doesn’t take lots of money to make my kids happy on their birthdays!

But aaaagh…..it just occured to me what I’m writing about! My house is going to be filled with not only my boys…but six extra 11-13 year old boys!!! I think I’d better start airing the house out now and lighting some scented candles…

(Oh you know I love it!)

What in the WORLD?!

May 22, 2008 by Laura 4 Comments

It’s rainy and dreary today…so the boys and I were just sitting down to play a game of Skip-bo…and my Dad called.

While I was on the phone with my dad…all the boys started to go nuts! They haven’t acted THIS bad while I was on the phone for a couple of years now!

It was like I had four extra large monkeys in my living room who had just eaten a five pound bag of sugar coated sugar…each…

And here they are pulling each other’s socks off and yanking on each other’s legs and arms…and all the Skip-bo cards that were all neatly piled and ready to play got all strewn around…which of course upset Asa (because he had a good hand).

And I’m on the phone trying to say, “Uh huh.” and “Yeah” and answer questions…all-the-while..I’m walking from monkey fight to monkey fight, pulling bodies away from each other…

But of course I can’t pull them off of each other…because one set of hands is attached to another set of socks…which are of course attached to someone’s feet…

And I only have one hand to work with because one hand is holding the phone…

It was delightful.

“ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!? WHERE IN THE WORLD DID THESE CRAZIES COME FROM?!?!”

I’M SORRY FOR SCREAMING. *ahem*  i’m sorry for screaming.

I’m okay now.

So…do you think maybe the next time I hand the boys a basket of wet clothes and tell them to hang them up on the clothesline….

That maybe I should explain a bit about how to do it first?!

Once Upon a Time…

May 20, 2008 by Laura 9 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Recently I was sitting with my two littler boys trying to kill time while we were waiting for Daddy. So we began taking turns making up and telling stories to each other.

My stories were always action packed thrillers about how “Once upon a time a boy and his brothers always played so nicely together and how they just loved to eat their asparagus and how they always picked up their toys when they were finished playing…”

I’m one wild story teller…as you can see…and my kids just sit on the edge of their seats when it’s my turn. (yawn) ;)

Well, here’s what Malachi (age three) came up with when it was his turn (and…no, these are not typos):

Once on a time, there was a big boy named Mommy.
And he was coloring on the paper. And he was playing his “gurtar”.
And he was making me a snow cone.
Be end.

Since we rarely need to use feminine pronouns around here…obviously Malachi hasn’t learned them yet. Everyone is a he (including you).

I’ve never played a “gurtar” before, nor have I ever been called a “big boy”…but it sure was fun hearing Malachi creatively come up with a story from his head.

So, here’s my Works For Me Wednesday tip for today:

Telling stories is a great way to pass the time when you’re stuck waiting without any other “ammunition”….and a great way to hear how creative your kids can be.

Trust me….I’m a big boy named Mommy who plays the gurtar and makes snow cones while I color on paper. I should know.
