Back Up Your Computer With Carbonite (Get a $20 Gift Card)

October 23, 2013 by Laura 3 Comments

You may remember me sharing this story last year. But with the idea of helping you save your computer like I saved mine, I wanted to share it again. Plus, Carbonite just announced that they are once again giving out $20 gift cards to those who sign up, so it makes this a much better deal for everyone!

A little over a year ago, a friend told me about Carbonite – a source she trusted and loved for backing up all her files on the computer.

At the time, we had nothing backing up our computer. This scared me quite a bit, because if our computer ever crashed, we would lose thousands of pictures – not to mention the eBooks and other projects I was working on for the website, financial documents we had saved, and who knows what else.

We took our friend’s advice, and signed up. For $59 per year, this seemed like a very worthwhile and reasonable investment.

Would you believe, that the investment with Carbonite paid off exactly four days later. Out of nowhere, the hard drive on our laptop (which was only one year old) got completely fried. When the “computer guy” who was examining our laptop looked at me and said, “There’s no way I can retrieve any of your information. Your hard drive is gone. I sure hope you have your files backed up somewhere…” I breathed a huge sigh of relief that God had led us to Carbonite just in the knick of time.

And I also wanted to kiss my friend who had told me about it…and maybe could have kissed the Carbonite people if I was in the business of kissing strangers, which I’m not, so I just chose to be grateful to them instead.

Anyway.

I just received an email letting me know that everyone who signs up with Carbonite receives a free $20 gift card or your choice. (Yay – just in time for Christmas!)  This is a great deal, because receiving that card pays you back for a good chunk of your initial yearly investment. Plus, you can get a free 15 day trial to start with to see if you like it. (I’m pretty sure you will like it. We love it because it is super easy to use. Plus, because our files are on Carbonite, I can get online from a different computer and access anything I need to at any time. Love that!)

I encourage you to look into Carbonite and take advantage of this offer. It may save your neck! Or at least it will save all the information stored on your computer that you don’t want to lose!

P.S. If you sign up with Carbonite’s Refer a Friend program, you can help your family and friends back up their computer too – and you’ll both receive gift cards. I’m using my Refer a Friend links in this post, because I like gift cards! Amazon gift cards are the ones I’d choose! But I love how Carbonite saved my pictures and hard work even more, so that’s why I’m sharing this with you. :)

If you’re in the market for a unique gift, you’ll want to check out one of this month’s sponsors, Uncommon Goods.

Uncommon Goods provides a platform for artists and designers – half of what they sell is handmade! Most of their products are made in the U.S. and many of their products incorporate recycled or upcycled materials. If you take a look through all the products on their website, you’ll see all kinds of fun gift ideas.

I think one of my favorites is the Aqua Farm. It’s fun, educational, and super cool! You can check it out here.

Want something that costs a little less? They carry Kinetic Sand, which I think my boys would love. What a great stocking stuffer! Check it out here. And for the adults in your life, Uncommon Goods carries all kinds of unique items. Their iPhone cases are pretty sweet (see them on this page), and you know all those hard-to-buy-for people in your life? Well, I would say Uncommon Goods has you covered.

I am super impressed with the quality and variety found at Uncommon Goods. With Christmas coming up, it’s great to know that there is a source like this to help us out!

Is Amazon Prime Worth the Yearly Fee?

October 1, 2013 by Laura 30 Comments

I am brand new to Amazon Prime. We signed up for the free trial, and are now at a point of deciding whether to pay the yearly fee or not. What’s the best way to make a decision about something like this? Ask your friends on Facebook of course. :)

This morning, I threw out the question “Do you have experience with Amazon Prime? Is it worth the yearly fee?” on my Heavenly Homemakers Facebook page. Within minutes, I had over 200 responses – most of which screamed a great big “YES! Do it! So worth it!”

Thanks, all. I knew I could count on you.

It seems that from your experience, the savings on free shipping pays for itself in no time – especially if you are planning to Christmas shop at Amazon (which I am). Many of you enjoy all the movies and TV shows you can watch for free, and who doesn’t love their orders delivered within just two days?!

Based on your rave reviews, we’ve decided to stick with it for now – especially with Christmas coming up.

Your turn to weigh in:  Do you have experience with Amazon Prime? Is it worth the yearly fee? If you haven’t tried it yet, I’d suggest signing up for a free trial to see how you like it.

Learn about Diastasis From Fit2B Studio

July 9, 2013 by Laura 3 Comments

Fit2BStudioI wanted you to be sure and check out a great service offered by one of my newest advertisers, Fit2B Studio!

One of the big focus of the site is healing an abdominal injury called a diastasis. This is a very common injury that can be a result of pregnancy, poor posture, weight gain and even some exercises. Many people have this injury and are completely unaware. There is a video on the website where you can check yourself for diastasis.

Here’s what Amy (mother of 5 and promoter of this great program) has to say about Fit2B:

I do not think that I have a severe diastasis, but have still greatly benefitted from Fit2B, here are the things that have made Fit2B Studio so great for me:

1. Flexibility. I can workout at home, most of the time in my pajamas. The workouts vary in length (from 5 minutes to 50 minutes) and intensity, so I can customize it depending on how much time or how many times I was up the night before to nurse the baby. :) There are many ‘exercise pathways’ that you can choose as you grow stronger and tons of different workouts to graduate to as you get stronger.
2. Family Friendly. They are always modestly dressed and there is no offensive or loud music. I never have to worry about what my kids will hear or see. There are even kids work outs that my kids love to do and ask for.
3. Gentle, yet effective. There is not a lot of jumping around and crazy moves that my body can’t handle right now. It is not jarring or fast paced. They have a whole section that is safe and profitable for pregnant ladies and new moms. They encourage you to listen to your body and move at your own pace. The focus isn’t on being swim-suit ready or fitting in to skinny jeans, but healing your core and being strong to take care of your family. I have definitely noticed a difference in my strength and muscle tone in the last two months. Bethany is very encouraging and supportive. She even has live weekly chats to answer questions!
Look into this great program at Fit2B Studio. If it looks like something that will benefit you and your family, use the code “rosamond” to get 3 months for just $20 or $10 off a one year subscription.

When Legos and Learning Collide (Free Lego Learning Printables!)

July 8, 2013 by Laura 5 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

If you didn’t already know about our family Lego obsession, let me remind you that not only do we have lots and lots of Legos, we have an entire room dedicated to Legos. (I am personally more obsessed with butter than Legos, but my boys love them, so I love them too.)

If only it was still this clean. At least it’s not as bad as it used to be though.

All of our boys have loved Legos through the years, but our youngest son Malachi, who is now eight, is our Lego King. Not only will he spend hours each day creating with Legos, he is actually saving his money to begin a Lego Business some day. Who knows but that it just might happen?

As I’ve been working to prepare our curriculum for when we begin school in a few weeks, I got super excited when I came across FREE Lego Learning downloads! Here is one for Lego Mini Figure Writing Prompts. Here is a Language Arts Lego Mini Figs Download. Both of these are perfect for Malachi (who will be a third grader). What a great and fun way for him to work through his English lessons this fall!

If those don’t work for you, or if you have younger kids, you’ll want to look at all of the Lego Learning options over at Homegrown Learners. I was so impressed with what she offers (for free!) that I had to share with you. :)

Helping Your Kids Develop Their Talents

June 11, 2013 by Laura 4 Comments

Special thanks to 10KtoTalent for sponsoring this post. Matt and I have been so appreciative of all we have discovered on this site!

This has been on our minds for months. Our oldest will be a junior in high school in the fall. {gulp}  The questions have already started: “Does he know where he’s going to college?” “What is Asa interested in doing in the future?” “Has Asa taken the ACT yet?” It’s enough to make me get out the baby book (that I failed at putting together while in the midst of not sleeping, breastfeeding 25 hours a day, and diaper changing) and wish for those tongue in cheek “simpler years.”

It’s humbling to realize that we just have two years left to prepare our child for independence. As Asa seeks direction for his future, we have been praying specifically that God would reveal to him where his passions lie, what he is the most gifted at doing, and where we should be focusing as we develop his school plan through graduation.

10ktotalent

It was in the midst of this that we heard about 10KtoTalent. It is said that “it takes 10,000 hours of talent development for someone to reach a world class level of performance in any particular field of human endeavor.” The site 10KtoTalent is a resource that helps you, as a parent, explore this with your kids. We love this because it is something we should all be intentional about with our families. Having this site as a guide to walk us through how to do this is so valuable!

We’ve been working our way through the free First 100 Hours Guide that Jonathon Harris, founder of 10KtoTalent has put together. We definitely don’t plan to only use it with our oldest. All of our boys will benefit from this – starting now. What a blessing it will be for us as parents to offer so much guidance and specific focus for our kids as they develop the abilities God has given them! We are thankful that this resource is available to offer guidance to us, the parents. :)

The 10KtoTalent free resource First 100 Hours Guide is available to everyone who subscribes to the newsletter. No matter what your kids’ ages: get this resource. It’s free, and the newsletter will be a continual service to your family. You may also want to follow 10KtoTalent on Facebook.

Do you feel like your kids are aware of their talents? (The talents that are in addition to eating a huge stack of pancakes in five minutes and retelling an entire two hour movie in detail…)  How do you help them develop these talents?

valentine lip balm

I am so excited to share this fun deal with you! It’s good today only – so act fast!

You know how much I love MadeOn Bee Silk Hard Lotion. Every winter for as long as I can remember, my hands got so dry that they cracked and bled, and ultimately felt miserable. It didn’t matter what I tried – nothing worked – until I tried MadeOn Hard Lotion. Within just a few hours, I noticed a huge difference in how comfortable my skin felt. I’ve been using it ever since, and I just love it.

Even more than I love how well it works is how safe and healthy it is to use on our skin. It is made with just three ingredients – coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter. That’s it. And it works soooo well! I’m so thankful to have discovered it!

Once I knew how well their lotion worked, I decided to try their lip balm too. Oh my goodness – it is awesome. The Peppermint Lip Balm is my favorite.

Today only, when you make any MadeOn purchase, you will automatically receive a FREE Peppermint Lip Balm. No need to use a special code, and there is no minimum purchase. Simply add any items to your cart that you are interested, and you’ll receive the Peppermint Lip Balm as a free add-on! (Doesn’t apply to e-book only purchases.)

This deal is good Monday, February 11 only. Enjoy your soft, healthy skin and your free lip balm!

How To Warm Your Food at Work Without a Microwave

December 14, 2012 by Laura 17 Comments

I was so excited when reader, Elaine, shared this idea. So I wanted to pass it on to you right away!

Many of you have wondered – how can my husband or I warm up food while at work when the only thing available is a microwave? If you’re trying to avoid using a microwave, this can be tricky.

But Elaine shared this wonderful idea:  Get a tiny crock pot.  This 20-Ounce Lunch Crock Food Warmer is perfect. I also found the 16-Ounce Little Dipper on sale, which looked great.

I love this idea, and think this would make a great gift!

Thanks Elaine. It’s so lovely to have such smart readers. I love learning from you all! :)
