My “Bulk” Natracare Order (And Possibly Too Much Information?)

June 13, 2011 by Laura 33 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Well, speaking of buying in bulk and having everything you need on hand so you don’t have to panic and run to the store…let’s just say that this concept isn’t limited to food, my friends. There just so happens to be a bulk order I needed to make today and for some strange reason, I decided you should know about it. You’re welcome, or I’m sorry – depending on how much information you really want to find here at Heavenly Homemakers. ;)

I’ve talked in the past about “healthy punctuation products” and the importance I feel that it is to avoid regular feminine products at the store. Read this post to know more about what I’m talking about.

I’ve come to LOVE all Natracare Products, finding that they make a world of difference in my “punctuation life“. Many of you have recomended the Diva Cup or Cloth Pads – call me lazy – I just haven’t gone there yet. (Silly, I know.)

Here are my Natracare Products of choice:

  • Natracare Ultra Long Pads with Wings (for heavy days)
  • Natracare Natural Ultra Pads with Wings (for lightish, but not yet panty liner days)
  • Natracare Organic Cotton Panty Liners (for oh good, I’m almost done days)  :)

The biggest reason I order cases of these products (beyond the fact that it saves money) is because I don’t ever, ever want to run out and have to get the regular kind from the store. I could break out into a rash just thinking about it.  {shudder} Regular products practically made me sick. I don’t ever want to use them again ever, ever, ever.

So there you go. In a few days, I’ll be receiving my bulk order of Natracare Products.

This makes me happy, although not nearly as happy as big bulky bags of oats. And I promise not to stand and stare at my box of Natracare Products like I stare at my bulk groceries. ;)

I Did It! I Made Fizzy Water Kefir Soda!

May 24, 2011 by Laura 43 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

The winner of the Water Kefir Grains from Cultures for Health is:
Jane Gram  (janegram13@)
Jane, email me with your address and I’ll
forward it on to Cultures for Health for your prize!

Pardon the insanity of this post, although I would imagine that you’re used to my craziness by now, right? You already know that I am obsessed with jars, that I buy hundreds of pounds of wheat at one time and that I love my butter and cream. But did you know that I also really love fizz?

You might have had a clue that fizz is my friend if you remember my former Pepsi addiction. After I gave up Pepsi, I’ve really missed the fizz, which led me to figure out some healthier alternatives to soda. But healthier yet is making water kefir soda, which not only has fizz…it’s wonderful for your digestion!

If you want a little fizz in your life and you also want a healthy gut, try making water kefir soda!!! It’s inexpensive, easy and look…there’s lots and lots of fizz!!

If you’re not a big fan of fizz, you can still use Water Kefir Grains to make a very healthy digestive drink, just don’t allow it to become fizzy. I’ll work on a post in the future with a step by step picture tutorial of how to make water kefir, but really, if you get the water kefir grains starter kit, all of the instructions are right there and very simple to follow.

Now, just to prove that you can make an incredible amount of fizz with homemade water kefir soda, I took a short video of my fizz. I could have captured one of my children doing something amazing on the soccer field to show you, but no. Instead, I made a movie of my fizz. Be sure to turn your volume up so that you can hear the fizz doing it’s fizzy magic.

Weren’t the bubbles beautiful?

So how about the taste of this grape water kefir soda? Eh, it’s gonna need to grow on me a little bit. I can’t say that I just love how it tastes. But it’s not bad, and because I know it’s so good for me and because of all the wonderful fizz, I am drinking it happily.

Do you love fizz, or would you rather a drink be free of bubbles? Fizz lovers, seriously, it’s all about the burn, is it not?

You can find a very reasonably priced Water Kefir Grains Kit through Cultures for Health. If you purchase through this link, I’ll earn a small percentage of that purchase. But that’s not the reason I’m telling you about this great product. It’s about healthy digestion, and of course, it’s really all about the fizz.

Staycation in Nebraska

May 23, 2011 by Laura 23 Comments

Wanna hear about all the fun things there are to do in Nebraska? Yes, we do have more than just corn fields. And squirrels. And corn fields.

I love the simple and quiet life we have here in Nebraska. It takes me seven minutes to drive “all the way across town” here in York. Funny how I can take that for granted.

Just in case you live in Nebraska or think you may come through for a visit sometime, I wanted to share some of the fun attractions in these parts. I’ll start with some of our family’s favorites, then share with you some that we’re excited to see and do in the near future:

Edgerton Explorit Center

This is by far our favorite place to visit in Nebraska. We’ve appreciated so much that Edgerton has set up a special program each month for home schoolers to come and learn. We’ve learned about everything from nano-technology to how to disect an eyeball at Edgerton. They provide experiences I just can’t provide at home and my kids love it. The best part (well, one of the best parts) about Edgerton is the big open room full of “toys” the kids can play with to explore science. I have to tear my kids away from this room everytime we go. Love it!

We buy a two year pass, which saves us money and allows us to go at anytime.

sciencemuseum6sm.JPG

Strategic Air and Space Museum

Located just between Lincoln and Omaha, I really didn’t think I would care much for the Strategic Air and Space Museum. I knew my boys would get a big kick out of it, but the idea of looking at airplanes for hours didn’t thrill me. I was mistaken in my assumption. I learned all sorts of things when we visited the Strategic Air and Space Museum and wasn’t one bit bored! I had no idea there were so many different kinds of airplanes and wow the history you can learn in a place like this. To say my boys loved our visit there is an understatement.

Haymarket Farmer’s Market

I know there are Farmer’s Markets all over the place, but I happen to think that the market in Lincoln is super. When I’ve visited, I’ve been so impressed with the variety and the set up and wow…there is so much wonderful fresh produce to be found (during the warm months, of course)! It’s a fabulous family outing. Yeah, I get a kick out of looking at rows of tomatoes and carrots. What can I say?

Wessels Living History Farm

Wessels Farm is just outside of York, making it my very favorite kind of field trip! All summer long, they’ve got programs available for kids and families, which you can read about here. The farm is set up to look like a farm of the 1920’s. I LOVE visiting Wessels and the kids have learned so much each time we go!

Lewis and Clark Missouri River Basin Visitors Center

The Lewis and Clark Center is just under two hours away from us in Nebraska City. Why we’ve never visited is a big question mark because we’ve studied Lewis and Clark quite a lot over the past few years. We’ve driven right by the The Lewis and Clark Center several times and keep saying we want to stop there. We have friends that visit there every single year because they love it so much. We really are gonna do that some day!

Sometime this summer we’re planning to visit the Omaha Zoo and Durham Museum…I’ll report back on those after our visits!

Planning to do anything fun this summer? Wanna come visit us in Nebraska? We’ll take you to our Science Center!!

What Heavenly Homemakers Readers Say About MadeOn Hard Lotion

May 21, 2011 by Laura 1 Comment

I’ve bragged about MadeOn Lotion Bars like crazy because I absolutely love them and use them daily to keep my dry skin under control. I am so thankful to finally have something that is natural and safe and works so well!

It would seem that I’m not the only one who feels this way. Here’s what some of you have said about MadeOn Lotion Bars:

Sara in WA: “The MadeOn Lotion Bar stays on my skin all day and it doesn’t irritate my skin or make me itch like everything else has. Coconut oil alone is so greasy. The stuff is AMAZING. I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve even fallen in love with the light scent.”

Karen in AL: “My hands are awful during the winter months. My heels are bad during the summer months. It has taken several weeks of continued daily use on my heels, but they are starting to show improvement. I loved what I’ve used so far! I’ve got the bug bar and can’t wait to start using it soon!”

Jennifer in OH: “I love the MadeOn Lotion Bar and it does make my son’s skin more soft and smooth, however the eczema on his face is so severe it doesn’t respond to anything but steroids. All in all, this is an excellent product and I will continue using it on my son’s body. Thanks!”

Now through the end of May, Renee from MadeOn Lotion is offering $2.00 off the 3 Pack Beesilk Dry Skin Care. Use the coupon code: HHMay for this discount. Remember also that all orders over $35 receive free shipping!

Unbleached Baking Cups

May 13, 2011 by Laura 22 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Are you a “butter the muffin tins” kind of gal, or do you prefer to use baking cups when you make muffins or cupcakes?

I do a little of both, depending on the recipe. Sometimes, food likes to stick to the baking cup, wasting a lot of food and effort. So on recipes like Sloppy Cornbread Muffins, Crustless  Breakfast Quiches and Pancake Sausage Muffins, I get out the butter and go to town on my muffin tins.

But for most other muffins, Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins, Orange Muffins, Coconut Flour Muffins…I find that once cooled, they come off the muffin paper just fine. It’s SO much easier to prep and to clean up when I use muffin cups. Or maybe I’m just lazy.

chocolatechocolatechipmuffinssm

All that to say that I am running low on muffin cups. I prefer Unbleached Baking Cups because they are safer for my food and safer for the environment, but they can be pretty pricey. I hesitantly went to Amazon today to see if they’d cost me an arm and a leg this time or if they were a decent price for me to stock up.

Yipee!!! They were on sale and with subscribe and save I got them for just over $1/pack. This is an excellent deal for Unbleached Baking Cups, so I decided to share my joy with you (ah what little it takes for me to get excited).

In case you want to jump at this deal too, here are the specifics:

If You Care Unbleached Baking Cups at Amazon, $29.38/24 boxes which hold 60 muffin cups each. (If you’re a geek like me, you’ll be interested to know that this all equals $1.22/package and you get a total of 1440 muffin cups which is a lot of muffins!)

What to do with “subscribe and save”:

You’ll save an extra 15% on the cost of your item, plus receive free shipping if you select “subscribe and save”!! However, if you don’t want to be stuck with future cost and products, select delivery for every 6 months. Then, as soon as your items arrive, log into your Amazon account, click on “manage subscribe and save items”. There, you can cancel your subscription!

Last time I bought a case of muffin papers like this it lasted me well over a year. And we eat a lot of muffins. Apparently something like 1440 muffins over the course of a year. (That’s like an average of 120 muffins a month. What can I say? I still had my calculator out.)

Which do you prefer? Muffin cups, or lots of butter and effort? Or a little bit of both like me?

I opened my mailbox and smelled vanilla. Hoorah…our new vanilla bean order has arrived!

It’s amazing to me that these vanilla beans are such good quality that I could smell the vanilla beans through the thick packaging. I can still smell the vanilla scent on my fingers, JUST from opening the package.

Here they are…my lovely vanilla beans from OliveNation:

I guess you know what’s going on in my house right now. We’re starting another batch of Homemade Vanilla Extract. We’ve also got another big batch that’s almost ready to bottle up for sale! I’ll keep you posted.

So, since the vanilla beans have arrived, you know what else we had to purchase, right?

I found it rather amusing that today at lunch time I said, “Here, let me move all this vodka so you can set the table.” It was a proud parenting moment.

This is the perfect time to get a batch of homemade vanilla extract going so that it will be ready to give as Christmas gifts! My favorite source for high quality and economically priced vanilla beans is OliveNation. You’ll receive free shipping on the vanilla bean order, plus us the coupon code hhm2011 for a 10% discount!!!!

Here are my Homemade Vanilla Extract instructions!

What are Swagbucks?

May 5, 2011 by Laura 26 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Search & Win

I talk about Swagbucks here and there, mostly saying phrases like, “I used my Swagbuck earnings to buy Organic Groceries from Amazon.” This is all well and good if you’ve been reading my site for a few years and know about these Swagbuck thingies I’m talking about. But recently I’ve recognized that not all of you know what I’m talking about, as I’ve heard some questions like,  “Laura, what are Swagbucks?”

Well, it would be my pleasure to tell you. I love Swagbucks. Watch me jump up and down while I tell you that:  It’s basically free money and it has paid for some Organic Groceries from Amazon for my family and free books for school and free Christmas gifts and free other things we’ve needed. You’ve just got to join me in this Swagbuck thing!

“Okay great, but really Laura. What are Swagbucks?”

Swagbucks are “bucks” earned while doing normal internet searches.  Typically, many of us use something that starts with a “G” and rhymes with Schmoogle to do online searches, right? This is wonderful and fine and easy and I’ve learned some great things about gorillas and the continent of Asia while using that search engine.

But by using the Swagbuck search engine, I learn great things about gorillas and the continent of Asia AND I get free money. Real money. The kind I can use to buy Organic Groceries from Amazon or books or gifts.

I have found it easiest to download the Swagbuck toolbar onto my computer…that way everytime I need to do an internet search (which is about eight hundred times a day) I do that search through my Swagbuck toolbar. Several different times each day, as I do those internet searches, I will see a little picture letting me know that Yay! I just won some Swagbucks!!

All of the Swagbucks I earn accumulate in my account. Once my account reaches a total of 450 Swagbucks, I can turn them in for a $5 Amazon Gift Card. I save my Amazon Gift Cards and use them for items we need, because I can find all kinds of great items through Amazon.

There are other ways to earn Swagbucks and you can read all about it once you set up a Swagbuck account. Beyond doing normal internet searches, the most success I’ve had for earning extra Swagbucks is telling other people about them, so that when they sign up and earn Swagbucks, I do too! Several of you have signed up through my links in the past, which has been a lovely and free way to support our work here at Heavenly Homemakers (so thank you oh so very much!). You can earn Swagbucks by referring others too. Once you sign up, be sure to tell everyone you know so that they can sign up under you and you can earn more Swagbucks! (However, you are not allowed to refer someone else in your own household…just people outside of your home!)

The beauty of Swagbucks is:  There’s no catch and it’s all free.  There’s nothing weird about Swagbucks or any need to feel nervous about joining me in the Swagbuck craze. It’s just a search engine, and you can earn free stuff or gift cards by using it. I’ve been using it for something like two or three years and have not had one bit of trouble or weirdness with it.

You can sign up for Swagbucks here.  It will take you about two minutes. Or one minute if you’re a fast typist.

Swagbucks is a lovely thing indeed. It’s a wonderful way for everyone to earn some free money to use for things they need! (And P.S. There are other goodies and gift cards you can turn in your Swagbucks for. I just almost always turn them in for Amazon Gift Cards because that is the most helpful for our family.

If you’re a Swagbuck user, what do you turn in your Swagbucks for?

Buy High Quality Shampoo and Still Save Money

March 25, 2011 by Laura 60 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’ve been asked many a time… (Wait, “many a time“? who actually says that phrase?)

Anyway, I am oft asked… (Hahaha, I never say that either. “Oft asked“…eeehehehe)

What I’m trying to say is:

It is not altogether uncommon that I receive frequent inquiries and recurrent requests for me to impart my wisdom in the matter of hair cleansing.

Um, hello. It would appear that I have suddenly turned into a Shampoo Professor with a British accent. You did read all of the above in a British accent, didn’t you?

My apologies for dragging you through that marvelous waste of time. I do have a point and I really am going to share it:

Shampoo. People always want to know what I use in our hair, how healthy it is and how I afford it. So there you go.

I wrote a lengthy post a while ago describing the different soaps and cleaners we usually use around here. When it comes to shampoo, many people prefer to buy the cheapest stuff possible and/or use coupons to get it for free and I completely understand that. I used to do that too. If I found it hard to stop using coupons to buy cheap and unhealthy food…I found it doubly hard to stop using coupons to get free hair care products. Sigh…

But, just like I’ve begun to understand that it’s good and wise to spend money on whole and nourishing food for my family…I’ve also decided that I want to spend money on healthy, non-chemical-filled products for our skin and hair. I do not relish the thought of harmful chemicals seeping into our bodies through our skin, particularly our heads wherein lie our brains. (Eek, Professor Shampoo made a little appearance again. “Wherein lie our brains”, wow.)

We use only the bar soaps from Tropical Traditions for bathing and are LOVING the MadeOn Lotion Bar for our dry skin. For our hair? We love Giovanni 50/50 Balance Shampoo. We checked it out on the EWG website to see if it was safe. Not only is it safe, it works great!

Is Giovanni 50/50 Balance Shampoo cheap? Nope. Not when you’re used to tossing out coupons to get 26 free bottles of Suave. But I’ve found a way to make our shampoo purchase more affordable AND I have peace of mind, knowing that I’m getting one of the healthiest shampoos on the market. There are no icky chemicals seeping into our heads with Giovanni 50/50 Balance Shampoo!

I used to buy Giovanni 50/50 Balance Shampoo 8-ounce bottles by the case from one of my health food co-ops. It was pricey, but much cheaper than buying a single bottle at a health food store (which would usually be something like $9/bottle!!). But THEN I discovered the beauty of buying a gallon jug of the shampoo from Amazon!! I invested a few dollars in a pump thingy…so that I can use the gallon jug to refill our smaller bottles for use in the shower.

Now granted, I am the only one with long hair in our family of six (unless you count my 13 year old son who prefers his hair to be down over his ears and into his eyes), so this may not last as long for families who have lots of girls with long hair. BUT, we’ve trained our boys to just use a tiny amount of shampoo because they really don’t need more than a little bit. I’m happy to report that our first gallon jug lasted us well over 18 months!!!

$3/month isn’t the same as free…but it also isn’t nearly as expensive as a good quality shampoo can appear at first glance. I’m VERY pleased that we’ve been able to get away with spending so little on such quality shampoo!

And that, Ladies and Gentlemen, concludes today’s informational session on what I consider to be a superior product and how I heretofore am able to execute such a purchase in a way that is financially feasible.

In other words…that’s how I buy good shampoo and save money.

Feel like telling us about the shampoo you use?  You can even use big words if you want to. :)

Where to Buy Organic Nuts in Bulk

March 8, 2011 by Laura 33 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Several have asked me recently where I would recommend buying organic nuts in bulk. I’ve been excited to answer that question as earlier in the year while our family was in California, we made a special trip to visit Braga Organic Farms, one of California’s few organic nut growers. Our family has done business with Braga Organic Farms in the past and Heavenly Homemakers is an affiliate of theirs. We LOVE their organic nuts!! It was so exciting to tour their farm and learn how their operation works and to actually see the pistachio trees and organic practices!

Braga Organic Farms has been organic for over 11 years. Every question we asked, they knew the answer (and we asked a LOT of questions). These folks know their organic farming and care a lot about their work! Did I mention that theirs is a family run business? We love that part too!

One of the biggest questions we had, and the subject we covered most while we were there was:  Why Organic?  Is it important to buy organic nuts instead of conventionally grown nuts? What’s the difference?

Instead of answering with words only, Mr. Braga took us outside to show us his fields compared to a neighboring farmer who does not grow nuts organically. Here is a lovely picture of the nut tree rows at Braga Organic Farms:

And another:

What’s impressive about the above pictures is that California had been experiencing an unusually large amount of rain during that time. The soil is so healthy, you can’t even tell that rainfall was far above average.

We then turned around and walked just a few feet to take a picture of the non-organic neighboring farm’s nut tree rows:

It was AMAZING to see such a difference in the soil quality at the different farms. As Mr. Braga put it, “Other farmers use pesticides and herbicides to help take care of their trees.  We work hard to care for our soil…then the SOIL takes care of our trees.”

Yep, healthy soil makes for healthy trees which makes for healthy nuts. In fact, Mr. Braga told us that because their organic nuts are not typically as large as “regular nuts”, they are more nutrient rich because the nutrients are more consensed. Pound for pound, organic nuts are more nutritious.

So, we asked, why do organic nuts cost more than conventionally grown nuts?

The answers make sense:

  1. Braga Organic Farms uses a high quality compost instead of cheap fertilizers to enrich their soil. The high quality compost costs a significant amount more than cheap fertilizers.
  2. There is more labor involved in their weed control. They mechanically remove weeds instead of using herbicides.

Our family will be ordering our nuts in bulk from Braga Organic Farms from now on. You can buy a smaller quantity if you don’t want a great big box of nuts, but if you have freezer space, bulk is a great way to go to save money, since shipping costs are the same no matter how much you buy. (You can read my thoughts about paying shipping costs here.)

Nuts stay fresh and keep from going rancid in the freezer for up to three years!  I recommend buying in bulk if possible because while the up-front cost may seem like a lot…when you break down the cost, you’ll find a price comparable to regular ol’ nuts at the store…only these are organic and super high quality!

Have you found a great source for organic nuts? Do you buy in bulk? Don’t you just love snacking on nuts? (Unless of course, you are allergic to nuts, in which case you had a hard time reading this post in the first place.)  :)

Braga Organic Farms has agreed to give all of us a 10% discount on any purchase now through April 7!! Be sure to take advantage of these great savings! Use the code home to receive the discount.
