Get Your Kids Involved in the Kitchen {You Can Do This! Bonus Tip}

I am very excited that so many of you are taking part in our You Can Do This! The First Five Steps To a Real Food Kitchen eCourse!

As an added bonus – for those of you who are participating in the course and for those who aren’t – each Monday for the next few weeks, I plan to share a Bonus Tip to encourage you along in your Real Food Journey. Remember though, these are just bonus tips. If you take the eCourse, you’ll get loads more information, guidance, downloads, recipes, and worksheets – all for just $5! (Click here to purchase if you are interested.)

Today’s tip is to get your kids involved in the kitchen with you. This will help them learn how to cook, and learn how to make healthy choices.

Just by helping me in the kitchen, my kids have learned how to adapt a recipe to use healthier ingredients. Case in point…

Elias got a new cookbook in his stocking – and all of the recipes are for yummy desserts, his favorite! Simply by looking through the recipes, he can  figure out how to make dishes and desserts using healthier ingredients. He’s only 11.

kids_in_the_kitchen

This it not because I’ve spent countless hours drilling my kids on how to cook and how to adapt recipes. It’s because they learn simply by being in the kitchen with me, and because truly, adapting a recipe to make it healthier is not really very difficult! (Read more about how to do this here.)

kids_in_the_kitchen_2

Elias and Malachi (age 8) chose a Mint Chocolate Bar recipe and got to work, with very little help from me. They used sucanat in place of sugar, whole wheat flour in place of white flour, and real butter in place of vegetable oil. These are all one-to-one substitutions. See? not hard at all!

Their special treat turned out delicious. And I love knowing that I’m preparing my kids for a healthy future. (Because yes, they do know how to cook more than just desserts.)  :)

Beginning to make a few healthy changes in your kitchen? Feeling like you don’t know where to start and how you can find the extra funds?

I dedicated an entire lesson of the eCourse to figuring out how to make a Real Food Kitchen work in your budget, so hopefully those of you taking part of the course have found some money saving and management tips that have been helpful.

In addition, I wanted to remind you all of my Whole Foods Resources page here on my blog. I have found that purchasing much of our food online has saved so much money, time, and energy. Having healthy food delivered right to my porch? It doesn’t get much better!

One of my favorite online resources is Vitacost. I buy all sorts of items from them, from vitamins to coconut oil to oats to almonds to the occasional “healthier treat”. They are constantly running sales, so if I watch for them, I can score great deals. One of my favorite deals is running right now:  Receive Free Shipping when you purchase $25 or more of the VitaCost Brand items. This includes their Vitacost Brand Coconut Oil. If you’re taking the eCourse, you know that this is one of the first suggestions I make – to switch from unhealthy oils to healthy fats like Coconut Oil.

And here’s the best news:  If you are a brand new customer with VitaCost, you can click here through my referral link and be rewarded with a $5 coupon code to use on your first order (which must be $30 or more).  What a great way to save you money as you are getting started with switching over to some healthier items in your kitchen!

What a blessing to have such great food sources available to us online!

Share an ingredient or two in the comment section that you are planning to switch over in your Real Food Kitchen. I love hearing about healthy changes you are making! :)

Peanut Butter and Ranch Dressing – But Not At the Same Time {You Can Do This! eCourse Bonus Tip}

January 13, 2013 by Laura 13 Comments

ECourse1BonusTips

I am very excited that so many of you are taking part in our You Can Do This! The First Five Steps To a Real Food Kitchen eCourse!

As an added bonus – for those of you who are participating in the course and for those who aren’t – each Monday for the next few weeks, I plan to share a Bonus Tip to encourage you along in your Real Food Journey. Remember though, these are just bonus tips. If you take the eCourse, you’ll get loads more information, guidance, downloads, recipes, and worksheets – all for just $5! (Click here to purchase if you are interested.)

Today, I wanted to share a little bit about how my Real Food Kitchen works and how I manage to make healthy, whole foods in a timely way.

Last week, I found that I was out of two items that we eat often:  Ranch Dressing and Peanut Butter. Now, of course, we don’t eat the two together, nor would I recommend it to you. But I did make them at the same time, just as a way of being efficient. (I’ve talked about this a little bit already, and this new post is an example of how I put this method into practice.)

Side Note:  I had to be careful not to pour minced onions or parsley flakes for the dressing mix into the food processor with the peanuts. Wouldn’t that have been…icky. ;)

I first poured peanuts into my food processor, told everyone around me to plug their ears, and turned on the machine so that it could start to make peanut butter.

homemade_peanut_butter

While it was turning peanuts into peanut butter, I looked up my Ranch Dressing Mix recipe and began getting out the ingredients I needed. I then proceeded to go back and forth between the food processor and the ranch dressing mix until I had four jars of peanut butter and a triple batch of ranch dressing mix all ready to go.

ranch_dressing_mix

Beyond encouraging you to be efficient with your time in the kitchen, here is actually the main tip I wanted to share:

When working to develop your Real Food Kitchen, try to plan ahead and work ahead just a little bit as you have time. This will save you time in the long run.

I wasn’t actually planning to serve ranch dressing or peanut butter the day I made them. But I often do need them both, and since I had neither of them on hand, taking a few minutes to make them one afternoon will be very convenient for me later, when all I’ll have to do is reach for them at a moment’s notice!

What is one thing you can make this week that will help you to get ahead in your Real Food Kitchen?

You Can Do This! The First Five Steps to a Real Food Kitchen eCourse

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Are you ready to begin your journey toward a Real Food Kitchen? I’ve broken down everything you need to know to get started, and put it into a simple, step-by-step eCourse to guide you along in the journey. You can do this!

Work through the eCourse on your computer at your own pace, at any time of the day or night! Once you purchase, you will have unlimited access to all of the pages, recipes, worksheets, printables, and information- forever! Print what you need when you need it. Go back and review the information and regroup as needed. This course it meant to be just what YOU need it to be!

Cost for this eCourse, which includes five thorough lessons is only $10.00.

What is Included in the You Can Do This! eCourse:

Each of the five lessons includes Introductory Information, an Encouragement Video, Worksheet Activities, Helpful Printables, and an Exclusive Real Food Recipe. I’ve worked to make the information thorough, yet not overwhelming. And of course, I tried to make it fun. :)

What the You Can Do This! The First Five Steps To a Real Food Kitchen eCourse is about:

~ Baby stepping away from processed, boxed foods and toward delicious, healthy, fresh food.
~ Setting personalized goals that will work for you and your family – no matter your situation, location, or season in life.
~ Figuring out how you can make a Real Food lifestyle work for you financially.
~ Walking through the basics of simple, healthy menu planning.
~ Deciding when to compromise your real food diet.
~ Learning how to keep the journey simple and easy.
~ Enjoying balance and grace. Ahhhh...relax. Your Real Food Kitchen will be a breath of fresh air!
~ Having fun.

What this eCourse is NOT about:

~ Eating foods that are all organic, grass fed, free range, fermented, raw, yada yada. All of these truly are great and healthy, and I will eventually offer a follow up eCourse that covers some of these ideas. But those are not the areas I believe should be our main focus as we take beginning steps toward a Real Food Kitchen.
~ Eating low fat, low carb, grain free, vegan, etc. I’m not knocking those ideas (necessarily), but within this eCourse, we’re working toward eating a wide variety of wholesome real food, in its original form, in balance.
~ Dieting. This isn’t about losing weight (although some might find that they naturally arrive at a healthy weight while working through this course). It’s about adopting and living a healthy lifestyle for yourself and your family.
~ Adapting to a one size fits all plan of action. No way. Your Real Food Kitchen is likely to look different from mine based on circumstances and preferences. This eCourse will allow you to create your Real Food Kitchen on your time table, around your schedule, and based on your own goals and desires.

My goal is that as you work your way through the eCourse, you find yourself saying, “Seriously? Is it really this easy? I can do this!”

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pie

The fudge. The chips and dip. The pie. The mashed potatoes and gravy. The rolls with butter and jelly.

Going back for seconds…then thirds. Snitching another cookie in between meals. Snacking on the leftover ham and turkey. Grabbing just one more piece of candy.

It’s that time of year.

We are likely all feeling it. In the midst of very much enjoying all of the delicious foods and treats this holiday season…in the back of our mind lurks the nagging truth that we really need to get back to reality and eat just a little bit (or a lot bit) better.

Are you ready to start eating healthier, but you’re not sure where to start? Do you feel overwhelmed with the loads of contradictory “health food” information out there? Are you reluctant to give up your favorite comfort food and treats?

What if I were to walk you through some simple steps you can take to get on track with healthy eating? What if I make your transition to a Real Food Kitchen simple and painless? What if I told you that you very likely can continue to eat many of your favorite meals and desserts – and that healthy, real foods are the most delicious foods you’ll ever eat?

I believe that everyone has what it takes to create and maintain a Real Food Kitchen. If you’re ready to make healthy changes that are affordable and realistic – at your own pace – I would be thrilled if you join us in taking the You Can Do This! The First Five Steps to a Real Food Kitchen eCourse!

Get ready for it! (And by get ready, I really just mean…enjoy the holidays and wait patiently for a few more days while we put on the final touches.)  This eCourse will launch on January 7. Cost will be just $5 for the entire course.

We can’t wait to walk with you through these steps to a Real Food Kitchen. You Can Do This!

The First Five Steps to a Real Food Kitchen eCourse…Coming in January!

“I’d like to begin eating healthy, but I really have no idea where to start. Help!”

My inbox is full of emails stating this or something similar. So many of you are interested in feeding your families a diet of real, whole food. With all the “healthy food” information out there, much of it contradictory, where do you even start? It’s overwhelming, and it’s life changing. Some even feel like the changes are so huge, it’s not even worth the effort!

I remember the feelings so very well. Seven years ago when we started our own Healthy Eating Journey, I knew my family needed to stop eating so many processed foods. But all of the information I read about switching over to whole foods had my head spinning. And then I started reading that not only did I need to eat more vegetables, but they needed to all be organic. And fermented. And our meat needed to be grass fed. And our milk needed to be raw. And our….

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was all too much. Not only did I feel like throwing in the towel, I felt like burning the towel and stomping on the ashes. (Yes, an adult-sized temper tantrum. Sounds pretty, huh?)

Frustrated or not, I knew that my family needed to make healthy changes. So what was I to do?

I prayed. I researched. I wrestled. I experimented. I worked. I asked others for help.

And guess what? Over the last few years, I have figured out that not only does creating and maintaining a Real Food Kitchen not have to be difficult, it’s actually quite fun. And the food tastes amazing and is very easy to prepare!

I am excited to share that over the last few months, I have been developing what I hope will keep you all from experiencing so much of the same frustration that I did when we first began our healthy eating journey.

Introducing….

This eCourse will take you through five simple and practical lessons that can be tailor made for your lifestyle and needs. And guess what? We won’t even touch on buying organic or grass fed food! I mean, you can go there during this eCourse if you want to and if you’re ready, but when I say “the first five steps”, I’m really talking about the first five steps.

What’s even better? Your first five steps don’t have to look like someone else’s first five steps. They can look the way they need to look for YOUR family! Yay! By the time you’ve completed the five lessons in this eCourse, you will be well on your way to a Real Food Kitchen, all while making painless and uncomplicated changes. And did I mention that real food is delicious? :)

We are working hard to put the finishing touches on this eCourse to have it ready to launch in January. You’ll need no special equipment to be a part of this class. You can work on it during any time of the day or night that works for you. You can finish it in one week, in one year, or in whatever time frame you need. You can do it in your pajamas. You can do it while standing on your head. (And if you do, please take a picture and send it to me.)

And best of all? It will only cost you $5 for the entire course. We want everyone to have a chance to participate. And we want everyone to know that when it comes to eating a healthy diet – YOU CAN DO IT!

Be watching for more information about this eCourse and others that we will be completing and featuring in 2013.

As we finalize our lessons, I’d really love to hear from you – What is your biggest challenge when it comes to creating a Real Food Kitchen?
