Fun Father’s Day Idea: How to Make a Mystery Message Card

You have to try this great idea for making a mystery message card! I think they’d be super fun for the kids to make for Dad (or Grandpa) (or that ornery uncle) for Father’s Day. They’re very simple to make, yet kind of tricky for the recipient! How fun for the kids to try to stump the grown up!

Instead of trying to explain how to make the card with a picture tutorial, I had Asa video me making one. I think he did a pretty good job taking his first video!

Oh and to answer the questions you’ll all want to know…yes, I’m wearing my old basketball uniform top from high school. I found it when I went to KS last month, and thought it was fun. And no, I wasn’t any good at the sport, but it’s fun to have the uniform. My boys think it’s oh so cool.

**Edited**  Never mind about the gluing step. It doesn’t work. I don’t know what I was thinking!! :)

Be creative thinking of something fun to write for your mystery message! Hope you give these a try!

Wait… tricky for the recipient? I think I missed a step. ;) All of a sudden the card just opens up? *sigh* I’m going to try it anyway – it looks like something fun to confuse my father with ;) Thanks for posting it!

Meg…it is very tricky for the recipient…it’s just that on the video I showed you how to open it up easily! If you hand it to someone…I promise they have a hard time figuring out how and where to open it up! They turn it over and look at it from all angles. Almost always I have to SHOW the recipient how to do it (after they’ve tried for a few minutes!)

I’m so glad you showed a video demo instead of trying to explain it! I’ve watched it 3 times and it’s like I’m watching a magic trick! I can’t wait to make one. Thanks for sharing!

Oh, and I just sent my fist attempt at digital scrap booking to Walgreens. Thank you for that Father’s Day idea as well!

um, ok, I made one with my son… but I’m finding the 2 flaps that get pasted down get lifted up anyway when you open the mystery part… know what I mean? Is there any point then in glueing? Please reply or email me back!
    Thanks!

These look like a lot of fun. The perfect accompaniment to our “Our Dad Rocks” rocks, a fun idea we found in the June issue of Family Fun magazine. This will be my Dad’s first Father’s Day without my brother (who passed away unexpectedly last month), so the boys (5 & 8) and I are trying to add a bit of fun to our gift. I think my Dad will appreciate the creativity and the silliness. Thanks for sharing this great idea!

Thanks for sharing! My children made some of these yesterday. They had a lot of fun with their “secret” message. I think we will all enjoy watching daddy try to find it.

This card was easy to make and will be such a fun surprise. My husband always guesses his gifts before he opens them, so this was the perfect way for me to send him on a scavenger hunt with obscure clues to his gift to heighten the suspense. What fun! Thank you for helping my children and me create a very memorable Father’s Day. We can’t wait!

Thanks for the video–I had the same issue as Jen, though, the flaps we glued down get opened up. Very cute!

My boys and I made this card for all the great men in our lives. They had a blast. They made jokes in the first part of the message and then put the answers in the “secret” part. The flaps to glue down are the colored flaps on the back of the card. They open perfectly and the paper doesn’t slide around.

Have a terrific day with your husband!

Yesterday when my little Lulu gave this to Joe he was so impressed with it. And yes, she did have to show him how to open it up. I love seeing how happy she was when while he was admiring it. Thanks again for the tutorial.

I did glue the inserts and good thing b/c hubby tried to pull them out. It was a lot of fun making this with my two boys and dad loved it. We had to help him get it open! Thanks!
