I just noticed this cool Salt Absorbing Fireworks craft over at I Can Teach My Child. This looks like so much fun!

Jenae has tons of fun and inexpensive (or free!) ideas on her site. Check it out!

I used to do daycare, and we homeschool as well, and have done a couple different variations on this. Instead of using the food coloring, you can just use different colors of glitter on the glue! The other option is to mix dry powder acrylic paint into the salt for a colored salt, and use that on the glue!
