Guess what we brought home with us after visiting my family in Kansas at Thanksgiving? A whole deer!!
Our family friend, Bert, LOVES to hunt. My dad has many acres of land on which to hunt. My dad doesn’t charge Bert anything to hunt on his land. So, several years ago, Bert told him that he’d give my dad one deer each year in payment for hunting on his land.
My dad doesn’t like deer meat. So guess who gets a deer each year?! We do!! (My dad doesn’t understand why we get so excited about that.) (Maybe you don’t either. Do you like deer meat?)
We think it’s yummy…and of course we like the free meat part of the deal. Our favorites are the tenderized steaks that I make into chicken fried steak. Yum! And with the hamburger meat, we make chili and tacos and sloppy joes and spaghetti and….you get the idea.
What’s really cool is that Bert acts like WE’RE doing him a favor by LETTING him hunt for us. (You’re welcome, Bert. Glad we could help.) He is grateful that we appreciate it so much and can use the meat because he enjoys hunting so much. His wife isn’t a big fan of deer meat, so she appreciates us too. EVERYONE wins!!
Bert told us that if he gets another one this year, we can have that too. GO BERT!!
So, this Gratituesday I’m grateful for how God provided us with a whole shelf full of meat in our freezer. And for friends who are willing to share.

Mmmm! Do you make jerky?? I like deer meat because it isn’t as gamey as other wild meat!! Everything is always better when free!!
Free meat is good! I don’t know if I have ever had deer meat. We were getting Elk for a while and I was not very good at preparing it. Have you had Elk? Does it taste like Deer?
Have a great day,
Stacy
We currently have 50 lbs of deer in our freezer. My husband got one and our pastor got the other and gave it to us! We have already have steaks, jerky and quesadillas. Yum, yum!

I’ve never had deer meat. Free is always good, though. :)
Ground deer meat makes the best chili and hamburgers. It is also really good in meatloaf. And deer jerky is also really good. I am glad you got some deer meat.
OH deer meat would be such a blessing. I believe it is mind over matter when it comes to eating deer meat. I’d love to have someone give us a deer. I can relate to your excitement!
My dad hunts in CO and he has to pay for a tag (which is iffy as to whether you will get one) and it is expensive. so maybe that is why Bert appreciates it so much? We love free deer meat too.
Deer meat is the best! We just got 30 or so pounds back from the butcher shop. I am so excited. My husband and I were thinking of all the good things we could make with the ground meat. Stuffed Green Peppers, Meatloaf, Taco Meat, Chili… Yummy! I am so glad to have venison again! We have been out since the beginning of September and have really missed it!
I hope you get another one for the freezer! Wouldn’t it be great for it to last all year long?!!!
I’m thankful for the same thing! We allow a father and son to hunt on our property (my husband doesn’t hunt) and they always share with us – it’s such a blessing! Thank you for hosting this and reminding us to be thankful all year.
OH, Free is sooo good!!!! maybe someone will send a deer our way…LOL!
Blessing to the deer!
You have reminded me of when we used to live in Alabama and would get venison from hunters with surplus. I made about 5 gallons of deer chili one time. It’s a great way to use up some of the meat. But, man, we got tired of eating chili that winter.
I love deer meat. It brings back memories of my grandpa who used to be an avid hunter. Whenever we’d go to Colorado, we’d always have a venison roast, and it was so good. A few years back, we made some of the meat into jerky with a dehydrator. Yum! Enjoy your deer!
What a blessing to have so much free meat! That is a wonderful deal for you.
And, of course, the meat is hormone and additive free! My family is always thankful when someone is willing to share moose meat with us. In my opinion, it is even less gamey than deer. More often though, we are blessed with those who share fresh Alaska salmon with us. I’m not crazy about fish, but it is so fresh and wild and good for us that I’ve learned to cook it several yummy ways that my husband and I enjoy.
I have never tried deer meat but one time my dad tried to trick me…I was on to his deception.
Growing up the daughter of an avid hunter, I can totally appreciate your excitement!
I’ve come home to a deer hung in my backyard – now that’s something most people don’t see every day…
Blessings,
Steph
hmmm… venison. my husband runs screaming from the room at the mention of it. he liked it when he was little, until he saw how you got the venison…. poor guy, he’s scarred for life.
As a child, when I was told that it was venison,I would curl up my nose and “get sick”. I did not like venison. After all, I knew where it came from.
As a child, when I ate “roast” I would ask for second and third helpings. I later learned that Granny’s venison had been renamed “roast” for my benefit.
