Gratituesday: The Thirteen Year Old “Manly Trip”

Our second son, Justus, turned 13 last Friday. As he did with Asa two years ago on his 13th birthday, Matt took Justus on an out of town day trip to spend some one-on-one time with him.

What did they do on this trip? They spent a lot of time having great conversations. Road trips are good for that. :)   Before the trip, Matt had talked to three godly men that Justus respects. While on the road, each of the guys called and gave some words of wisdom to Justus. We are so blessed to have these men (and so many more!) in our lives to enourage our sons.

Once they reached their destination, Matt and Justus stopped at a park and kicked around a soccer ball. They went to Cabela’s. They ate a manly meal of BBQ meat. Then, they got to do what Justus was so excited about – they went to a Tim Hawkins show!

Ever seen Tim Hawkin’s Chick Fil a clip? So fun!

I am so thankful to have another awesome teenager in our house. And I’m so grateful that Matt is so diligent about training our sons to be godly.

Oh, and while they were having their fun day away, the other three boys and I got to go to a Mother-Son banquet put on by our church. A great day all around for our sons!

Lucky you too, you didn’t have to endure a Tim Hawkins concert…….bahahahaha……….we have all the DVD’s and have been to a concert and there are just so many Tim Hawkins’ moments now in our house…….enjoy your teens, they are the best!

We just named our second son Justus, as well! He’s only a month old, now, but I look forward to the day when my husband can do such things with him and his brother. :-)

I LOVE Time Hawkins. He is so stinkin’ funny. On a serious note, thank God for men like Matt who take their role as Dad seriously. Our country needs more Matts!

Laura, I lost ALL my pics including your button for my blog. I am using a different computer to get me by. Today I wrote about the coolest birth that was truly a family affair.

A great idea! Sounds like fun. We want to do a simple retreat with ours when they are coming of age. I’ve never heard of a day trip, but I like that idea.

Kind of embarrassed to say that I’ve never heard Tim Hawkins before! Looking forward to watching some clips of him. Always in search of some good, clean humor! PS: Happy Birthday to Justus!

Love your posts about Godly sons. Being a mom to four kids under seven, I forget the big picture sometimes. Raising Godly children is what it’s all about. How much fun for your son!

That sounds like such a fun day! I want to suggest to my husband that he do something like that with our sons when they turn 13…that is kind of crazy to think about, because they are 2 1/2 and 6 months right now : ) And our family has enjoyed Tim Hawkins for several years now. We love his clean humor and fun song parodies!

Wow, what a treat to see Tim Hawkins! I’ve only seen his stuff on youtube but I’m very impressed with what I’ve seen. Such a talented young man. How wonderful that Matt takes each son for father son time like this. What memories are made. :)

Congratulations on having another teenager! I love having teens! Three of ours are teens right now. What a great thing having those older men call and talk to Justus! Such a blessing to have great examples of Christian men and women in the lives of our children.

Love Tim Hawkins. We got to see him live at a homeschool conference a couple years aga. It was so fun.

Thank you for enlightening me on Tim Hawkins. He is hilarious and has a great message. It’s so hard to find clean, wholesome entertainment now!

That’s awesome! Did he go to the Tim Hawkin’s concert that was in Olathe, KS? He just performed there and all of the sales went to raise money for adoption. We’ve been blessed to receive help for our adoption through this, and to be a volunteer from prior events. :)

That’s very awesome! No, the show they went to was in Kearney, NE – about an hour and a half away.

That is such a neat thing your husband does with your boys! You are very blessed to have a husband like that, just as they are blessed to have a dad like that. So many do not.

I imagine it was a pretty exciting day for Justus! Love his name by the way!

You have a lot to be thankful for, and so do your boys! It’s encouraging to hear your positive comments, as well as some others here, about having teens. It seems like all we ever hear are negative things which sometimes makes me feel afraid for my kids to get older…my oldest son is 10. What a great idea for Matt to spend the day with Justus! Both of you are wonderful parents! oh…and P.S. I’d never heard of Tim Hawkins either! :)

Praise God for your husband who is investing in his son! I’m not so keen of TH (for me he is is a bit over the top) but so very glad that he is far more tame than most entertainers :) Also, it’s wonderful that there are other men to pour into Justus! Thank you for sharing your life!~

    Laura,
Would you mind telling us some of the things that your husband does to encourage your sons to be Godly? I’m always up for new ideas… thank you so much.

Hmmm, I’d have to say that the main thing he does is to be godly himself. He’s a great example to them. Plus, he is constantly encouraging them in their character development – helping them know how to treat others. In addition, he serves others with them. Serving together has been wonderful!
