Happy Independence Day!

We just got home from a short , but wonderful family reunion trip – and I’m feeling a bit lazy. ;)  This afternoon, instead of trying to get some work done, I picked up one of Asa’s new readers for the upcoming school year and I can’t put it down. (Pictures of Hollis Woods – oh my – you must read this book.)

I kept trying to make myself put down the book and make a menu plan and do some writing for the blog this week. But shucks, reading a book just sounds like more fun right now, plus it’s a holiday weekend. So I decided to allow myself a short time off from writing. You guys are all having a holiday weekend anyway, right? You don’t really want to read about my bulk purchases or my cultured buttermilk. It’s time for cook-outs and fireworks and celebrations!

And so, I’ll meet you back here on Monday night for Gratituesday and we’ll carry on from there. In the meantime, be sure not to miss our big curriculum sale. Also, in case you’re needing to make something yummy to take to a get-together, you can steal my very chocolatey potluck plan and make these Fudge Brownies with Chocolate Fudge Frosting. It’s a crowd pleaser.

These turned out a little bit ooey-gooey, but I’m pretty sure nobody will complain.

Here’s Malachi with one of his cousins at the coolest Kiddie Park in
Oklahoma
where tickets are only 25¢ each. They had a blast!!

Each year, my aunt makes a big pinata for all the kids at the reunion.
Here’s Elias getting ready to knock the snot out of it. ;)
(I mean candy – not snot. You know what I mean.)

Are you doing anything special for the 4th? Have a wonderful and lovely time!!

Happy 4th! I’ve been sleeping on and off since Friday. I had minor surgery on my arm. So I’m pretty much doped up on drugs lol. My hubby took the kids to church today, and then they went to the movies for see Cars 3D. They are having Daddy weekend. :-) Yesterday Daddy took them to Hershey Choc World, then to the Park. I think they have a cookout to go to tomorrow.

Can I make your homemade powdered sugar for this recipe with rapadura instead of sucanat?

Yes – actually rapadura and sucanat are the same thing. Rapadura is just a “name brand” for sucanat. Actually, I should clarify – be sure the sucanat is organic and defined as “dehydrated cane sugar juice” – THEN it’s the same as Rapadura! :)

Happy 4th! We are in Florida, visiting family with our newborn baby…and having a great time! Our lives are incredibly busy right now (we live in Alaska, have been on vacation to Texas and Florida with our 6 week old, and are moving to Oregon in 3 weeks!), and one of the only things that has kept me sane is the amount of food I’ve prepared and frozen. It’s so nice to know that I have a healthy meal ready for our family in the freezer. Thank you for your inspiration and fabulous recipes. I’m looking forward to the chicken fried steak strips waiting for me when I get home!

Oklahoma? That’s my neck of the woods! Sorry about the weather — if I’d known you were going to be here, I would have tried to have it cooled down for ya. :-)

We live just south of Tulsa!

I made a double batch of your brownies for the first time today for our family get together. I can’t stay out of them!! I’ve gotten back on track with healthy eating for the last few days and this is my first “treat”. I’m going to HAVE to freeze the leftovers tonight otherwise I’ll be in serious trouble ;-)

I am wondering the silliest thing. What is your pinata made of? It looks like a balloon. I am doing a pinata in a few weeks… I like the size of the one in your picture.

My aunt makes it – I believe she starts with a big punch balloon (the kind with a rubber string on it to bop it), then she covers it with newspapers and some kind of paste. I’m sorry I don’t know more than that!
