You probably already know how simple this is, but just in case, I’m writing an entire post about how to put chopped pineapple into a freezer bag. But first join me for some boring talk about being boring, which is really quite exciting depending on who you are and what you are interested in.
You know how pre-teens can talk and laugh about a fictional character for hours, how teenagers can talk about shoes, how computer geeks can talk about wires, and how athletes can discuss the score of a game from 2004 – and whichever category of people you don’t fit into, you think that subject is the most ridiculous and boring topic on the face of the earth?
Yeah, well women are just as exciting. Here’s what I talk about with glee to my friends while my kids fall off their chairs in the background: “I got 4 pineapples for just $1.29 each! I know! eeeheeeheee!”
Really, I remember my mom and Kristina’s mom (my childhood friend) having a very long conversation about the price of lettuce (which had most certainly gone up to 79¢ – can you believe it?) – when I was a teenager back in 1985. Kristina and I just rolled our eyes and giggled about the fact that our mothers could possibly think that information about the price of lettuce would be interesting in the least. While our mothers continued their dry discussion, Kristina and I turned back to talking about much more exciting and meaningful topics such as which shirt to wear to school tomorrow and how the cover of my notebook had torn on the way to band class.
As it would appear, I am now my mother, and you are my friend’s mother because I’m here to tell you that I seriously got 4 big fresh pineapples for just $1.29 each! Is that not awesome? Especially since the cheapest I typically find them is between $3.00 and $4.00. That’s why I bought four. You’ve got to get four when you get them for that great of a price. And see, here I am, going on and on and having a very long conversation (with myself, sort of) about my wonderful deal on pineapple.
I, for one, am enjoying this conversation very much.
Those of you who choose to instead talk about your rock collection or printer ink for hours are going to have to find someone else to share it with – because I just got four pineapple for $1.29 each! Do you know how great this is?
How did I get such a great price on four such lovely pineapples? Now that there is an Aldi 50 miles from my town, I can price match at my local Walmart. Aldi was running a special, so I went to Walmart and price matched that deal. (They were just $1.29 each!! Did I tell you that part yet?)
Our family loves pineapple, but our palates might not appreciate eating so much pineapple in a matter of a few days. Instead, we chopped one and ate it, then chopped the rest and froze the chunks in baggies to be used later in our very favorite Pineapple Mango Smoothies.
No way will I ever find bagged, frozen pineapple at the store for $1.29/bag. Oh, but if I do, you can bet I will have a lively conversation with you about it, filled with lots of exclamation marks. (!!!!!)
Pineapple Mango Smoothie Recipe
As you can see from the picture tutorial early in this post, freezing pineapple is as easy as cutting away the outside of the fruit, then cutting the inside into chunks. We found that one large pineapple filled a quart-sized freezer bag.
Now you tell me: What’s the greatest deal you’ve gotten lately? You know I want to hear all about it. Be sure to use exclamation marks. (!!!!!)
The very best deal we ever got, I still keep the receipt on the fridge. My husband bought 4 boxes of chocolate truffles just after Valentines. Our grocery store has a gas station – if you buy gas, you get cents-off towards groceries, and if you buy groceries, you get cents-off towards gas. Anyway, the boxes of chocolates were on sale, 75% off, down to $2.74 each. He cashed in his cents-off coupons and the price on the receipt says “-0.51”. Yes, that’s a negative in front!!
Frugal me thought it was a great Valentine’s gift!
I must be really lucky, because our Aldi (30 miles away), regularly sales fresh pineapples for 99¢!!!! :D I love this “conversation” by the way ;)
I got some, uncut for $.89 in December. I also cut and bagged for smoothies. I bang the bag on the counter to loosen them up and throw into the blender with blueberries, strawberries, bananas, all bought at sale prices for smoothies, too.
We have the .99 pineapples a lot too. I’m glad I am able to go to Aldi directly because their produce usually looks better than what our walmart has, but the price match option is nice too. I haven’t tried it yet.
Great deal! Today I got a 3 lb. Bag of organic apples for $5!
I got a gallon of organic milk for $1.50!! It’s going to expire tomorrow, so I’m making yogurt with it tonight!! A gallon of yogurt for $1.50!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone posted it on Facebook, so I ran into town and got a CASE (40 ish pounds) of organic bananas for $5!!!!
Aldi also had 4pks of pears and 6oz pks of blackberries for .99, 4 lb bags of oranges for 1.68 and blueberries for 1.49. I went and stocked up on all of these yesterday. I try to buy organic when possible but sometimes there is just not money in the budget for it :) And yep…I also stocked up on pineapple
Love when pineapples are on sale! Our extra tends to go in the dehydrator. Just slice and dry, no need for chemicals or extra sugar or dipped in anything. They are like candy when they are done!
Good grief what deals on some of the things these people have posted. We just got an Aldi’s in our area. Had no idea there were fruits for this price at times. I will check this out. I am thrilled to get a pineapple for $2.50 when they are twice that in some stores.
Thanks for the info from everyone.
Pineapples here (Ohio) at Kroger are most times $1.99…..my daughter goes to Aldi’s a lot and she thinks their fruits & vegs. are better and cheaper than Walmart or Kroger…..
Thanks for posting free shipping & handling at Tropical Traditions ,on their ad out from your blog says today only !!! Are you sure it’s till Mon. ? Just sayin……don’t need coconut oil, but will check and see if they have anything I do need tho thanks.
I usually make my smoothies with canned pineapple in its own juice, usually on sale always at Kroger or Walmart for .99 !!!!!!!! then I buy several cans and by the time I use them all its’ on sale somewhere else….I really prefer Dole brand, but Krogers is ok when it’s on sale…..
Walmart is getting picky about price matching……they want to see an ad !!!!!! they used to just take your word for it until someone tried to pull the wool over their eyes re: some electronic items …..I’m sure you have heard about it…..always someone to ruin a good thing eh? Thanks Laura for always looking out for your blog friends, we appreciate it….
So how do you know if the pineapple is ripe? Too intimidating so far but I’d love to save money buying & enjoying them fresh. And I LOVE the dehydrator idea!
Smell the bottom of the pineapple. If it smells like pineapple, then it’s ready to go. Don’t go by color.
Pull one of the small leaves at the center of the pineapple. If it comes out easily the pineapple is ripe. If it resists–not ripe.
My dad tells a story of the time when he was staying in Surinam and bought a fresh pineapple from a street vendor. She pulled out a leaf and gave it to him. He didn’t know why, so he smelled it. She laughed at him. She was just showing him the pineapple was ripe because the leaf was easy to pull out.
Pineapple… and blueberries for 99¢ at Aldi!!! WoooHoo!!! I feel like we just sat down over coffee and shared about our spoils of war! :)
I got a great deal on fresh garlic recently. A friend bought a big bag at Costco, took what she wanted out of it, and blessed me with the rest.
I spent the day peeling, trimming, and preserving that batch of garlic. I’ll be posting about it on my blog soon. Like your post, it may seem simple, but I’m sure it will help some who haven’t thought about preserving fresh garlic before.
Freezing fruit for smoothies is the best way I have found to use fruit that you get for a great deal. YUMMY!
Mm…Costco sells huge bags of frozen pineapple and I have been obsessed with making smoothies all winter long! So yummy.
Thank you!!don’t know why I never thought of freezing pineapple!!every time I see them on sale in aldis in my town,I buy a few(7kids in our family) and try to use them up before they go bad…yeah.I am going back today!!
I like the idea of freezing pineapple. What can you do with it besides smoothies? We are not much for drinking our fruits & vegies. Is the quality good enough for just thawing and eating or do you have to use it in a recipe?
I can’t tell from the pictures whether you did this or not, but I like to chop up the core and freeze it for smoothies, also. The inside core of pineapple is too tough for us to chew. But blended up? Perfect way to not let it go to waste!!!
