Have you ever tried making vanilla extract with glycerine instead of vodka? I have a child who needs to avoid alcohol extracts, but finding alcohol-free vanilla is next to impossible. I’m wondering if I could make my own. Thanks!

I bet you could. To make a glycerine tincture, you have to warm it in a crock pot for several days. I bet vanilla would be similar.

I’m so excited! I just ordered my beans today. I think I will send my husband to buy my vodka though. Normally, I wouldn’t have a problem with buying it myself, but I’m 8 months pregnant….I feel like that would just be begging for a lot of strange stares!

Your directions say 6 months. If I start it by the end of next week, will it still be ready by Christmas?

If will be just fine. In my experience 5 months is still a good length of time. Some “recipes” I have seen only call for them to soak for a few weeks – not enough in my opinion to really good all the flavor you can out of the beans!

I just started my vanilla today and as I was opening my vanilla beans I noticed that the smaller package (I had bought 1/2 lb and 1/4 lb) said JR mushroom? Please tell me that’s okay because if not I just wasted 1/2 gallon of vodka…..

You’re totally fine. My understanding is that Olive Nation sources their beans sometimes through JR Mushroom Co. What you got is great!

Thanks for this reminder! I just noticed that my supply was getting low. Well, “low” means down to two quart jars. :)

Now I’ll refresh my supply AND be ready for Christmas!
