Want to make homemade vanilla extract and get an amazing deal on vanilla beans? Olive Nation has discounted all of their baking supplies, which includes their vanilla beans.  Receive 20% off select baking products when you use the code HOLBAKA at check-out.  When you order only vanilla beans, you’ll also receive free shipping! (Read here about how to make homemade vanilla extract.)

Don’t forget that the 20% discount will also work for Olive Nation’s baking chocolates. These are by far the best chocolates I’ve ever worked with! I’ve experimented so far with their milk chocolate, white chocolate, and blond chocolate. These melt down wonderfully, making perfect Christmas treats! Free shipping does not apply to chocolates.

This code is only valid through Friday, December 6 – so don’t wait! Happy vanilla extracting, and chocolate treat making!

I love the idea of making homemade vanilla, but am having a hard time understanding the cost savings. The prices on Olive Nation seem like a lot….to buy 1lb. of beans means you have to spend quite a bit upfront, not including the vodka. Just curious how this compares to Mexican vanilla you can purchase from amazon, in terms of cost per unit. Do you know, Laura?

All I know is to compare it to the purest vanilla I can find, and this cuts the price in half! Mexican vanilla typically contains sugar, and most vanilla I see at the store is watered down. This is straight vodka and vanilla beans, which makes it pure and very strong. Since it’s so strong I use only half the amount called for in a recipe, which saves even more!

I ended up buying 1/4 lb. of beans just to start with….how do I alter the recipe given the smaller amt. of beans. Not sure how many beans this will end up being and unsure of the amt. of vodka I will need. Do I just make sure they are covered?

For the price I wouldn’t buy their chocolates…it’s not even organic AND contains soy…not really worth it. I can buy good chocolate without soy for that much.

I just bought a 1/4 lb. to try this out myself. I’ve been trying to get up the nerve to do this for years, since you first shared your experience! I guess I’m going to do it. I just want to know though, if I’m starting it soon, and you say 4-6 months is plenty, what if I want to bottle a couple for christmas gifts next year, do I need to pull the beans out at 6 months and just keep the vanilla stored until I’m ready to give them away?

Yes, that’s what I would do. Then you’ll really be ahead of the game!
