An Unhealthy Kind of Birthday

January 19, 2008 by Laura Leave a Comment

For birthdays around here, we keep things pretty simple. Simple presents (see here), simple party (see here) and simple day (we cleaned  house…yawn).

But the one thing we always do (and the kids LOVE) is let the birthday boy choose all three meals on the day of their birthday. Anything they want to eat.

My boys look forward to this SO much that they begin planning their birthday meals months in advance (and I am not exaggerating).

Here is the conversation with Elias as we were making the real plans for his birthday (not the plans dreamed about and talked about back in November):

Mom:  Elias have you decided for sure what you want to eat on your birthday?

Elias:  Oh yeah!

M:  What would you like for breakfast that day?

E:  Donuts!

M:  The kind Mama makes?

E:  No the unhealthy kind from the store with the frosting and sprinkles.

M:  All right. (since it’s your birthday) What would you like for lunch?

E:  Can we go to Country Kitchen?

M:  No, sorry not this year. Can I make you something from Mama’s Kitchen?

E:  How about hamburgers and french fries?

M:  Done. ( The hamburgers  and french fries from Mama’s Kitchen are mostly healthy, just don’t tell Elias.) What about dinner?

E:  Pizza!

M:  Fun. Your friends will be here then for the sleep over. Do you want everyone to make their own personal pizzas?

E:  No, can we have the unhealthy kind? I don’t mean the kind you order. Just any unhealthy kind would be fine.

M:  Okay. What kind of cake would you like this year?

E:  Um…a vanilla one with vanilla frosting. The unhealthy kind. From a box.

M:  I can make you a homemade one that’s vanilla and vanilla (with organic flour and sugar). Would that be okay?

E:  I really want a box cake.

M:  Okay. Would you like me to make a fun snack for you and your friends to eat while you watch a movie (since we’ll surely need a snack after pizza, cake, ice cream…)

E:  Oh, how ’bout chips?

M:  What kind of chips would you like?

E:  I think Cheetos. The big swirly kind cause I had those at Lincoln’s once.

M:  (gulp)  Okeedokee. I’ve got the list all set. Do you want to go on a date with me and help me pick all this stuff out?

E:  (eyes lit up)  Oh yeah!

And so we shopped and filled our cart with frozen pizzas, cake mix and frosting tub, ice cream, donuts and Cheetos. (I also bought organic apples and lettuce while I was there but they somehow looked out of place in the cart.)

Now as you’re reading this, you  might be thinking, “Oh, those poor boys are so deprived. They never get junk food so they crave it and have to wait until they either go to someone else’s house or have a birthday to request it. All she gives them is whole wheat homemade donuts. How can they possible taste good? They probably weigh two pounds each and taste like whole bran.”

But you’d be wrong (just this once). My homemade donuts are soooo good and they taste like real cake donuts only better (someday I’ll post the recipe). And my homemade pizza is delicious to and the boys LOVE it!

It’s just that some kids get excited because their mom bakes homemade cookies once a year at Christmas, but normally their mom buys packages of cookies from the store.

And my kids get excited because their mom normally makes most things homemade and this time for this special occasion will treat them to a frozen piece of round cardboard crust with meat bits and fake cheese on top. (and it’s a grand day at our house)

And so, Elias got his unhealthy birthday and loved it. Today, we’ll have unhealthy birthday leftovers (with apples).

And tomorrow, it’s roast beef, potatoes, carrots and gravy.

One Sleepover, Three Six Year Olds, Too Fun

Elias chose to have a sleepover for his birthday party this year. It was his very first.

epizzasm.JPG
He started his night out with pizza and a movie.

Then, everyone came in to decorate their own small cakes. Two things you should take note of here:  1) There are six boys in this picture including one three year old, three six year olds, one seven year old and one ten year old. All wanting to use frosting and sprinkles at the same time. AND I was babysitting a 10 month old who REALLY wanted a bottle right now (Matt was holding him, so I could capture the moment). It was five minutes of total chaos fun. 2) Elias apparently used his shirt as his napkin while he ate his pizza. Please know that it was clean before we started this whole birthday party thing.

ecake1sm.JPG
Here is Elias in his greasy sweatshirt with his cake all decorated. Here also is Malachi’s tuft of hair in the bottom right corner. (please take your focus to the cake)

blowingcandlessm.JPG
Ah, all six candles blown out at once, followed by, “Malachi…you’re not supposed to help me.” (hear the whine in the voice)

openpresents1sm.JPG
Opening present number one…spiderman boxing gloves!

openpresents2sm.JPG
Present number two:  Popcorn, candy, soda and a movie rental gift card. The mother of the one who gave him this knew about Elias’ “unhealthy birthday” plans and wanted to add to the fun. Thanks, Kami. :)

And the rest of the evening and the following morning were spent playing Play Station 2.

Oh, and also having conversations that only boys can appreciate (“Hey, wonder what would happen if you TOOTED so loud that you flew up in the air and then landed on the cat next door…”)

Ahhhh the joy. Well, I’m off to see what I can do with that greasy sweatshirt…and the sprinkles all over the kitchen…and the cat next door…

Homemade Bubble Bath

January 18, 2008 by Laura 82 Comments

I’m telling you, I could not think of ANYTHING to get Elias, our third son, who turned six today. He doesn’t need any more stuff and I certainly didn’t want to spend any money on more stuff. (I’m trying to get rid of stuff around here!)

The ONLY thing I could think of that he might like for his birthday was bubble bath. He has asked me for bubble bath several times in the past because he knows it is soooo much fun. But I’m not a big fan of the kind from the store (even though they are so cool cause they have Buzz Lightyear on the bottle!). Many of us have very sensitive skin at our house and soaking in a bathtub full of colored chemicals scared me (sorry, Buzz).

And so, I went online and looked for a recipe for homemade bubble bath. I found a great one here! It was super easy to make, cost VERY little and was so much fun to do. I even found this empty maple syrup bottle to put it in! (I knew I was saving that bottle for a good reason!)  Then I made a fun label with HIS name on it  which he thought was the greatest! (even better than Buzz!)

Homemade Bubble Bath

Here’s the recipe:

Homemade Bubble Bath

1/2 cup shampoo
3/4 cup water
1/4 teaspoon salt

In a bowl, mix the shampoo and water until well combined. Add salt and stir until it thickens slightly. Use a funnel to pour it into a bottle.

And that’s it!

This bubble bath costs pennies to make and makes a wonderful gift or stocking stuffer. Add a personalized label to make the gift even more special!

Men in Training

Yesterday my aunt, who lives in Arkansas, called. She asked what we were doing. I told her that we were standing at the window watching it snow.

And she said, “Ooooo you’re so LUCKY!”

And I told her (lovingly) that we had been lucky for about FOUR months now and that we were getting a little tired of being so lucky.

(not to mention the fact that I don’t believe in luck)

So, here we are with our lucky snow, that IS beautiful (I have to admit) but I’m getting excited to see a flower again. Phooey, I’ll be excited to see a weed again.

And my sweet big boys cheerfully put on their 20 layers of snow gear and went out to shovel the lucky snow when Daddy asked them to this morning.

And, bless their hearts (and bless mine because I went out to take their pictures), it’s -1 degrees with wind chill.

They came in with very painful hands because it was just SO cold.

But, they came in with good attitudes and I’m so proud of them.

I highly recommend that you get yourself a pair of boys, ages seven and 10. They are great to have around the house.

I just don’t know what I’d do without mine.

You’re the Best Mom Ever!

wfmwsmall.jpg

I’m not a very fun mom.

I mean, I’m really cool and I’m nice and I do fun things for my kids. I fix fun food and I make up fun games and I make school fun. But, I’m not very easily convinced to do fun things with my kids (unless it involves sitting and watching them have fun).

I’m just not big on running 90 miles an hour to chase one of them so that I can tackle him onto the ground during a family game of football. (I have four boys, for goodness sake. I know my limits.)

I’m the mom who, while washing up the dinner dishes, will occasionally poke her head out of the kitchen to smile and chuckle as Daddy (aka Tickle Monster) chases the four shreeking boys all over the house. Then, after they’re all tickled out, I’ll call, “Who wants Mama’s hot cocoa?” And they all come running and cheering. (see, that’s how I’m fun.)

So, imagine  my children’s surprise one morning recently when we were in the living room doing a Geography lesson, and a jump rope was laying on the ground and one of my littler boys (who is too little for Geography) was trying to make the silly thing work. And (without thinking), I take the jump rope and say, “Here’s how ya do it.” And then, right there in the living room at 10:43 in the morning, I start jumping rope.

My hair was flipping up and around, my sweater was getting contorted, and yet I jumped on, for a good, oh I don’t know, 40 seconds. I worked up a sweat and everything.

And it was SO FUN! (by the way, we have very high ceilings.)

I’m pretty sure my kids were speechless, for a good, oh I don’t know, 45 seconds (including my jump time).

Then, they all started cheering and saying things like, “Do it again, Mom!” In which I replied, “Oh well, here, why don’t you try now?” (I’m not trying to brag, but I was better than any of them, not that it matters or anything.)

So anyway, my point today is to get out there and do something fun with your kids, just because:  why not?!

*Play a game of hide and seek, then reach out and grab them when they find you (in their  toybox).

*Randomly break out into song in the car, singing your very best opera voice. (they’ll love it)

*When getting out of the car, shout, “Last one to the house has to do the lunch dishes!” Then make a mad dash (with your groceries and toddler on your hip) to the door. Don’t worry, you’ll get a head start because they’ll be too stunned to move for a couple of seconds.

*Or, just make some “really fun” hot cocoa and call ’em in, cause you’re probably worn out from just reading this.

Homeschool Musical

Today for my “Teaching Tip Tuesday” I would actually like to ask for tips from you!

I’m in charge of helping find a musical for our homeschool group to perform this spring. I’ve been procrastinating on this responsibility because I don’t even know where to start!

Our group will be directed by a very talented recent college grad. The kids who will be participating will be ages five to 12 (of course they are ALL brilliant children!). We need something simple and not too complicated (is that redundant?)

Have you done anything that you would recommend (or not recommend)? Any good websites out there that you would suggest that I check out?

If I get my act together, I’ll come back later and post a tip from my house to yours! In the meantime, any info on musicals will be greatly appreciated (we’ll even put your name in the program under “those we wish to thank because this musical could not have happened without you”)!

For more teaching tips check out The Helpful Homemaker.

My “Duh” moment (well, the most recent one…)

January 15, 2008 by Laura 3 Comments

Yesterday, I received a phone call from our Electric Company, letting me know that while they appreciated that they had received payment from us, the check I had given them was actually written out to East Hill Church of Christ. So, would I like them to shred it, or send it back?

Well, now don’t I just feel so intelligent.

So then, I had to embarrass myself further by calling the church office to ask if I had put our Electric Bill check in the collection plate last Sunday…

But no one at the office knew because someone else deals with the checks.

So, I had to embarrass myself further and call the guy who counts the money and deposits the checks.

But he didn’t know.

So now, I get to call the bank and ask if the check went through and how much it was written  for…

And so, I decided to embarrass myself further and tell you about it too. I mean, hey, we might as well all get a good laugh at my expense.

(It is really funny.)

Our Haven

January 14, 2008 by Laura 2 Comments

My morning routine:

1. Spend time in the Word (see below)
2. Get myself ready for  the day.
3. Feed Daddy and kids. (Justus made breakfast today! French Toast!)  Read Bible to the kids while we eat.

justusfrenchtoastsm.JPG
4. Clean Kitchen/Kids pick up 10 toys each
5. Start laundry
6. School time begins!

Beginning our day in the word, as Crystal at Biblical Womanhood encourages…what better way to make our home a haven.

I recently read John 14, which begins with Jesus’ words of comfort:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you,  I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”

And of course, Jesus goes on to explain that HE is the way, the truth and the life…the way to the Father.

So as we go about our tasks today (and tomorrow…)  be encouraged by these words of Jesus! He is working to make our home a haven also. He is preparing a place for us, in His Father’s house. You know, the house with many roooms?! Just for us!!

Today, as we work to make our homes a haven, let’s do it remembering that our Father is doing the same for us.

Remembering that Jesus is getting my room ready gives me energy and a smile as I create a haven for my family.

God bless you today as you create a haven for your family!

P.S. On my dinner menu for tonight:
Lamb Chops, Baked Potatoes, Green Beans
