How About Making Homemade Vanilla for Mother’s Day and End of the School Year Teacher Gifts?

vanilla

I’m just as bad as the discount stores with the way Christmas is barely over and they start putting out Valentine’s stuff. But I promise, there’s a good reason for me mentioning Mother’s Day and the end of the school year at the beginning of January. Really.

First, it takes 4-6 months to make a good, strong batch of delicious homemade vanilla extract, so starting this process now is a great idea. Second, you can get 10% off Vanilla Beans at Olive Nation, plus free shipping.

1. Read here about how to make Homemade Vanilla Extract.
2. Get your vanilla beans  ordered, using the code home for a 10% discount.
3. Your vanilla beans will come in just a few days (their customer service is as awesome as the quality of their vanilla beans). Then you can get your vanilla started and have it ready for simple, quick, but wonderful gifts come Mother’s Day and the end of the school year. Order some fun labels to make your bottles extra pretty! I love this set of labels that my friend makes: they are customizable, and come in a variety of designs!

And it certainly doesn’t hurt that you’ll also have fantastic vanilla extract for yourself too. :)

Everything You Need to Make Vanilla Extract for Christmas Gifts

vanilla

There’s nothing like talking about Christmas while we’re dripping sweat off our foreheads this summer. The only reason I bring it up in July is that many have been asking about the specifics of making Homemade Vanilla Extract for Christmas gifts. Now’s the time to get this project going if you’re planning to put it under the tree or in stockings in December. Just think – if you get this going now, your busy holiday time preparations will be just a little bit easier! It takes 4-6 months to make strong, flavorful vanilla extract. Therefore, beginning anywhere from May to August is ideal if you want your vanilla to be ready by Christmas.

How to Make Vanilla Extract

I have a detailed post showing you how to cut your vanilla beans and how to get your vanilla extraction process going. You will not believe how easy it is to make homemade vanilla!

Where to Buy Vanilla Beans

I have tried vanilla beans through the years at a few different places, but none of them compare to Olive Nation. Their quality and price is the best, hands down. When we contacted Olive Nation about promoting them here at Heavenly Homemakers, they were quick to give all of you an ongoing 15% discount (when you use the code home at checkout and click through this link). Plus, they always offer free shipping on vanilla beans.

How to Finish Your Vanilla Extract

After 4-6 months, you’ll simply strain the vanilla beans and bottle your deliciously wonderful liquid gold. Here are the details about how to finish your vanilla extract.

Where to Buy Bottles for Vanilla

I’ve searched many websites for good prices on dark colored bottles for my finished vanilla extract. When I add in shipping costs, the best price I’ve found has been through Mountain Rose Herbs. Here are more details about where to buy bottles for vanilla.  You may be able to find a better price locally, but since I live in a small town with no dark bottle options, I have found it’s best for me to order online.

Fun Labels for Your Vanilla Bottles

You can print your own labels to decorate your vanilla bottles when giving them as gifts, or you can have my friend Char custom design some for you. I love her work!

What have been your homemade vanilla experiences? Have you gifted it to others?

Are you in the process of making Homemade Vanilla Extract, like I am? Have you shooked, shaken, shaked, shooken…um…have you given your homemade vanilla a shake in a while?

If not, might I encourage you to get out the vanilla that you are brewing and give it a good shake? It’s all a part of the lovely extracting process.

There, now wasn’t that fun?

Carry on.

And if you aren’t making Homemade Vanilla, I highly encourage you to look into it following these very simple directions on how to make homemade vanilla extract!  It’s super easy and very fun. Then you, too, can say that you got your vanilla shaked, shooken…{cough}…that you shook your vanilla. :)

Gratituesday: Weekend of Blessings

It all happened unexpectedly.

My cousin Kristin sent me a message a few weeks ago saying, “So….I have this really cute, but EMPTY, vanilla bottle here…If I recycle and send it back to you, can you refill and send it back????” To which I answered, “Sounds like you need to make a trip to Nebraska so I can refill it for you.” ;)

And on the conversation went until can you believe it, last weekend, she made the trip! And she brought her two little boys and one of my favorite aunts! (The aunt who made my very special Disney quilt.)

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed their visit. The boys played and played. We gals chatted and cooked and caught up on everything going on.

I loved every minute of it. We’re going to definitely need to think of more excuses for them to come in the future!

Oh, and it wasn’t until it was time for them to load up and go home that Kristin realized that she’d actually forgotten to bring along her vanilla bottle for me to refill. Ha! Figures, doesn’t it? No problem though. It just so happens that I was able to find a little jar I could fill with homemade vanilla and send home with her. ;)

Homemade Vanilla Extract by Jill

August 4, 2011 by Laura 10 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

As you know, for about two years now, I’ve been making my own vanilla extract. This is all because at that time, my wonderful friend Jill sent me some of her homemade vanilla and told me how to do make it. Yes, Jill created this monster of a homemade vanilla craze around here! If you have also made your own vanilla as a result of reading here, you really have Jill to thank for this. I know I sure do thank her! Homemade vanilla is the best!

And so, I wanted you to know about the possilibility of purchasing some vanilla from Jill herself. Every few months, we offer homemade vanilla for sale here at Heavenly Homemakers (for those of you who don’t want to make it yourself), but we won’t have any more ready until October or November. If you’re interested in purchasing some of the finest, most pure homemade vanilla, I’d love for you to support my friend Jill and her family by purchasing from her site.

I won’t go into all the details, but Jill’s family is going through much difficulty right now. Your purchase would be a huge blessing and if I could, I would just hug you for helping. ;)

Click here to visit Jill’s site.

Homemade Vanilla for Christmas

vanilla

In case you were wondering (and I’m just absolutely sure that you were), there are only 164 days left until Christmas.

In the midst of gardening and other summertime activities, Christmas isn’t on my mind very much right now. However, Homemade Vanilla Extract is a wonderful Christmas gift. It takes 4-6 months for your vanilla to be ready to bottle and give away. So, if you’re wanting to get on this project in time to be able to wrap bottles of homemade vanilla and put them under the tree this December – now is the time to get it going!

I love that making homemade vanilla saves money, and is so pure and good to use. It helps that it is completely delicious!

Here are complete instructions for how to make homemade vanilla extract. Trust me, it’s easy and super fun to do! Also, be sure to take advantage of the 10% discount on vanilla beans, offered by my very favorite vanilla bean source, Olive Nation. They are super high quality beans for an excellent price! (Use the code hhm2012 to receive 10% off.) And take a look at these pretty labels that my friend designed! They are customizable, and come in a variety of designs. So fun!

Merry Christmas everyone! (Ugh, it’s too hot and humid to pull that statement off with a straight face.)

Stay cool! (There, that’s better.)

Why My Mailbox Smelled Good Today

May 10, 2011 by Laura 34 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I opened my mailbox and smelled vanilla. Hoorah…our new vanilla bean order has arrived!

It’s amazing to me that these vanilla beans are such good quality that I could smell the vanilla beans through the thick packaging. I can still smell the vanilla scent on my fingers, JUST from opening the package.

Here they are…my lovely vanilla beans from OliveNation:

I guess you know what’s going on in my house right now. We’re starting another batch of Homemade Vanilla Extract. We’ve also got another big batch that’s almost ready to bottle up for sale! I’ll keep you posted.

So, since the vanilla beans have arrived, you know what else we had to purchase, right?

I found it rather amusing that today at lunch time I said, “Here, let me move all this vodka so you can set the table.” It was a proud parenting moment.

This is the perfect time to get a batch of homemade vanilla extract going so that it will be ready to give as Christmas gifts! My favorite source for high quality and economically priced vanilla beans is OliveNation. You’ll receive free shipping on the vanilla bean order, plus us the coupon code hhm2011 for a 10% discount!!!!

Here are my Homemade Vanilla Extract instructions!

Are Vanilla Beans Expensive?

January 3, 2011 by Laura 27 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’ve found it interesting that many of you have left comments on the Homemade Vanilla Extract post stating that “vanilla beans are expensive”. Vanilla beans do seem expensive at first glance. I wasn’t prepared for their price when I first looked into making homemade vanilla a few years ago. They do cost a significant amount more than say…pinto beans. :)

Ever checked the price of Real Vanilla Extract at the grocery store though? I’ve found that even the least expensive brands are around $2/ounce. If you buy your own vanilla beans and make your own Homemade Vanilla Extract, it’ll cost you half that amount. Plus it will be completely pure, unlike the “Pure” Vanilla Extract you buy at the store that has added…stuff.

So, are vanilla beans expensive? Not if you are planning to make homemade vanilla for half the price of purchasing it premade! Investing in vanilla beans to make your own Homemade Vanilla Extract will save you money in the long run AND be much healthier for your cooking and baking!

You can buy very cheap vanilla beans through Ebay…but I REALLY don’t recommend it. We’ve made several batches of Homemade Vanilla Extract at our house. One bunch of vanilla beans we ordered (through Ebay) was significantly less expensive than other beans we’d seen. We decided to go for it, since of course, we’d be saving so much money!

Months later, those beans are STILL sitting in the bag, untouched. They came to us very dry and withered and pitiful. We may have “saved money” on vanilla beans, but in essence, we wasted money. The quality of those vanilla beans leaves a lot to be desired.

By contrast, we’ve been so pleased with our vanilla bean purchases through Olive Nation. They offer high quality vanilla beans, excellent customer service, free shipping for vanilla bean purchases AND a special Heavenly Homemakers discount. I appreciate Olive Nation very much and recommend them highly.

The special Heavenly Homemakers discount expired at the end of 2010…and I’m very excited to share that Olive Nation has been generous enough to extend their discount for several more months! If you purchase vanilla beans (or any of Olive Nation’s wonderful products) and use the code home, you’ll receive 10% off your entire order!! (There will be a shipping cost for other products; Vanilla Bean shipping is FREE!)

So, my response to “WOW, vanilla beans are expensive!” would be:  Yeah, I used to think so too. But now I realize how much money it saves to buy the beans and how much healthier it is to make my own vanilla.

And did I mention the homemade vanilla is delicious? Yeah, that’s a pretty nice perk too. :)
