Just wanted to say after you make your vanilla extract, don’t throw out your beans. I dehydrate them, and then powder them in the blender for vanilla powder. This is great in smoothies, ice cream, baked goods, etc… I think a gallon of vanilla makes about a quart jar of powder…

Wow! That’s great to know! I’ve never played with vanilla beans before, but I’ve been doing so much more cooking and baking since hubby went gluten free that I want to make my own vanilla extract. I read somewhere that you can scrape the beans and use the caviar to make things, and then put the scraped beans in alcohol to make extract. I was wondering if I could use the beans after they were done making extract, so I’m thrilled to see your comment!

Thanks so much for posting this comment. I have my first jug of vanilla in progress right now and hated the idea of throwing the beans away when it’s done. Yet another reason to get a dehydrator. ;)

I received mine last week! I could not believe how much more plump they are, as compared to some previously ordered from another company.
Can’t wait to try them out!
Thank you and thanks to Olive Nation, for the great deal!
BLESSINGS!

Any suggestions on what kind of gallon glass jar to get or where to get one? Thanks!
Laura says
I have found them for free or cheap through the years at garage sales and such. If you want, skip the jar and put your vanilla beans directly down into your bottle of vodka. :)

I am considering making my own vanilla extract for the first time since reading this post. However, I am a bit overwhelmed when pricing all the items. How is this cheaper than buying pre made extract? I would have $40 just in amber jars to put it in!
Laura says
While the costs do add up, I’ve found that after buying the vanilla beans, vodka, and bottles I still make it for 1/2 the cost of buying pure vanilla extract. High quality vanilla is expensive, so I’m thankful I can make such a pure and good product for less. (It’s definitely the initial cost of buying supplies that stings though!) :)
