Did you know that Tuesday, April 26 is National Pretzel Day? Yes. Let’s have a moment of silence in honor of The Pretzel. I kid…sort of. I think it’s ridiculous that there’s a National Day for all kinds of things (like National No Pants Day), but this National Pretzel Day, I could kind of get into.

What do you say we have a little pretzel fun? Wanna make these pretzels with me this week?  Your family will love it! You could make them into fun shapes, or spell out people’s names or make a big long chain of pretzels if you want. Or just make regular pretzels, because there’s nothing wrong with being good and traditional.

I have a little pretzel-making  motivation for you!  Anyone who makes our pretzel recipe this week and emails me the picture, whether they are traditionally shaped pretzels or wild and crazy pretzels or anything in between, will be eligible to win a $20 Gift Certificate to the Heavenly Homemakers Shop, good for any of our down-loadable products!

So get your ingredients ready, make some pretzels, snap some pictures and send them my way by midnight Friday, April 29! I’ll draw a random winner from emails sent on Saturday, April 30!

Here’s our menu for the week:

Mmm… I love making homemade pretzels. I have a different recipe I tried, but I want to try yours because it’s healthier. I did want to double check, though – will store-bought whole wheat flour work ok, or is it too dense? (We don’t have a grain mill, so it’s either store bought wheat or white.) Thanks!

Yes, store-bought whole wheat flour will definitely work! You may want to use a little less than the recipe calls for, just in case!

Does it count if we take a picture of your pretzels when we come over for dinner on Tuesday night? Just kidding we would never invite ourselves over like that!

Ha! You can totally come over for dinner if you’re free. Although, we’ll be at soccer games from 5:30 – 8:15ish. Makes for a very late dinner. :)

I don’t have ideas right now for GF pretzels. I’m up for playing though, so maybe I’ll be able to come up with something???!!

I am with Emily. I look at the picture and drool, but that is as far as I can go. I can’t lick the screen, so if you’d come up with a gluten free variety, that would be terrific. I know some people with ingredients in their pantries that might help, but they will be wild ingredients. Want to experiment????? In your spare time, of course! ;o0

I came to your site to get your pretzel recipe…then the first thing on the page is a pretzel challenge! I’ll be emailing you a pic soon. :)

btw, I’ve used this recipe before and really liked it! I used the dough for cinnamin rolls this morning and they turned out great! I am so happy I’ve found good whole wheat recipes! (My mom and dad like me to use only wheat…)

Your pretzels look yummy, Laura! Do you think these could be made in a Bosch (mixed and kneaded), or do they need to be done by hand? Also, if the Bosch would work, how long would you have the machine knead them and at what speed? I definitely plan to make these to celebrate National Pretzel Day–what a fun idea!

I’m sure you could make the dough in your Bosch, but I don’t have one myself so I have no idea what speed or how long. Probably the same as what you would make dinner rolls?

I make Laura’s recipe with my Bosch and works great!
I put the mixer on 2 and mix between 5-10 minutes. We LOVE these pretzels!

I have another question for you, too! In answer to one of the comments on your original pretzel recipe post, you mentioned that you usually bake these on a baking stone. Do you use the same oven temperature and just preheat the stone with the oven? And do you just slide the pretzels one at a time onto the hot stone? Thanks so much!

I don’t preheat the baking stone – I’ve never had a need to. Once it’s hot from baking the first batch, I shape the pretzel on the counter and place it carefully on the stone.

My husband can only eat soaked grains right now, so I went ahead and put together the dough. Instead of then letting them rise, the dough is in the fridge for an overnight sourdough-esque slow rise and I will make them tomorrow. So excited!! I think we’ll have pretzel dogs for lunch.
