Here are the Honey Whole Wheat Bagels I made over the weekend. Several of you commented that yours shrivelled and didn’t look nice – mine did that this time too. They were quite dense. I have no idea why. They still tasted good. SO, if your bagels don’t turn out perfect, don’t worry a thing about it. It’s tough to get a perfect bagel every time! What’s been your bagel baking experience?

I can’t make a good bagel to save my life. They always turn out dense.
Just bought your Gardening and Preserving ebook. I love all the pics and great advice. Going to try the banana peeling in the garden trick. I love checking your blog out everyday for new ideas on gardening and cooking. Thank you!! :)

I have only attempted this recipe once. They did come out dense, but ditto they tasted great. The kids had so much fun helping me make them, we didn’t care what they looked like.

I’ve never tried making bagels before, but I definitely want to! Your pretzel recipe was so yummy, I think I’ll give your bagel recipe a try soon. On a different subject, I have a question for you. Your menu plan for the week included homemade corn dogs, so I looked up your recipe. In the comments some people mentioned using silicone baking cups to avoid sticking. Do you know if silicone is considered healthy to bake in? Do you know if it is BPA-free? Also, I was going to try your coconut flour muffin recipe, but saw two different kinds of coconut flour at the store. One was raw and unheated, and the other didn’t say anything about being raw. The raw one actually was higher in fiber and protein, but was a brand I’d never heard of. The other brand was Bob’s Red Mill. Do you know if these would be the same? Thanks for all your advice and tips!

As far as I know, silicone seems to be safe and BPA free.
I’ve not seen raw coconut flour, sounds interesting! The ones I have tried are from Tropical Traditions or Bobs Red Mill.

I noticed you are having tacos and wanted to say I bought your ebook and the tortillas are GREAT! I wanted to share that I use my food processor to make them instead of cutting in the butter. It is so much easier! Not a big fan of cutting butter in :) and you do have such a cool new gadgit to use!!

When I first starting making bagels it seemed like they came out perfect every time! I swear the past 5 or so batches have been very disappointing. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, but every time they’ve shriveled and tasted a bit funky. If it weren’t for my husband’s love affair with bagels I’d have given up a long time ago. I just wish I knew why they used to come out so good and now they are sub-par!

I noticed with my last two batches of bagels that the smaller ones shriveled up. I wasn’t very good at dividing the dough evenly. Also I over broiled the first batch and all of them had a little bit of the shrivels but only the little ones totally shriveled. So Maybe that’s part of it too? Over broiling? The little ones would have been broiled even more cause of their size. I am going to try to make bigger bagels and minimally broil them to see what happens. I want to figure this out!

Update: Made a batch of bagels this morn and for the first time not a singe bagel shrivled. I made 10 bigger bagels and made sure to only broil them for exactly two min each side. So yay! Wonder how to make smaller bagels though….???

Thank you so much for your wonderful e-books! I have tried making tortillas in the past but for some reason, no matter what I did or how think I rolled them, they all ways puffed up like pancakes! I just made your recipe (practicing for our Cinco de Mayo potluck tomorrow) and I only have three words……O…..M….G! They were so yummy!!! I proceeded to make the best quesadillas ever with them. I will definitely be taking these to the potluck tomorrow (perhaps with some Calico Salsa????) :)
