Before Saturday, I STILL had not had a chance to get my hands dirty. I hadn’t had a chance to get into my garden at ALL. (You’re shocked at me, aren’t you?!) I had longed to get out there, but just not had even one moment to think about the garden yet.
Thankfully, Matt had found a few bits and pieces of time during the past few weeks to get our garden areas tilled up and to plant a few things. Ooh, and he even brought us home a big truck load of horse manure. Crazy how excited I was to see him that day. Saturday, we were finally able to both work in the garden together and get several more things planted.
The day was sunny and beautiful. Just ask Matt…I was completely giddy. I was running my hands through the soil…just for fun. It felt so good.
Yes, in case you didn’t already know that I am a garden geek…now you know for sure. I can’t help it. The garden gives me so much joy.
Wanna take a look at a few parts of it with me? (There’s more to be planted…these are just a few shots.)
We have lettuce ready to eat…it is so beautiful!
You can’t see it…but there’s corn in these rows!!
Aw, cute little pepper plants.
Oh yes…I did plant potatoes in my trash can again!!
I’m just so thankful for our garden. I love how we can see God in the entire process of watching food grow from a seed. I can’t wait to share more with you during the coming months!

thank you for hosting one of the most meaningful blog memes out there! I look forward to reading it each week.
oh, and your garden looks awesome! That dirt is to die for, I’d be playing in it just for fun, too!
Oh to have a green thumb! I am sloooooowly working on developing one now so my children will simply grow up with one! Your gardens look great!
I agree with Amy… thanks for hosting this. It’s one of my favorites each week!
My post this week is about learning to be patient, and I share a beautiful poem titled “Wait” by Russell Kelfer.
Have a great week! Be blessed!
Love that you love gardening too! I am out there nearly everyday checking the progress and picking off insect eggs. This is our first year for an organic garden….quite the challenge. And thanks to you, I decided to add potatoes to the garden this year. You made it sound so exciting! ;>) If you want to admire and drool over a lovely garden, check out http://www.lazybfarm.wordpress.com You have to scroll down a bit, but I just sit there and daydream over working in a garden that beautiful. If I had the room, I’d be one of those homesteaders in a heartbeat, complete with chickens, goat, and cow. :)
Potatoes in the trash can? Can you explain that for me? I am very interested.
Here’s a link explaining what to do: https://www.heavenlyhomemakers.com/gardening-101-planting-potatoes-in-a-container
Thanks so much.
I love to garden too. Mostly because I like to EAT what is in the garden. Every year I plant two things I have never grown before. This year: fava beans (they are beautiful plants with pretty lady slipper-like white and black flowers) and fennel. Both inspired by watching Lidia cook on TV. Ha Ha Praying for your family and the restaurant. By the way, what kind of food is served in the restaurant (Question #763)?
The food they serve is pretty typical sit-down restaurant food, with a few specialties (like they make their own fries from a fresh potato…just chop and fry – YUM!).
If Matt has his way, they’d serve a few more healthy items and avoid certain foods…but as assistant manager, he doesn’t always get his way. :) My favorite item they serve is a Philly Steak and Cheese Sandwich. SO GOOD with red and green peppers sauted with it!!
My mother had two green thumbs. Unfortunately mine are just flesh colored. I walk through nurseries and plants beg me not to choose them! My son gave me a Bonsai tree that had been alive for over fifty years; I killed it in less than one.
Hats off to those who can grow things! I just grow kids and grandkids!
love ya Laura,
Teresa
Do you use anything to keep potato beetles off of your potatoes/tomatoes? Also, do you have problems with worms eating up all of your corn?
Nasty as it is, we walk around squishing the bugs and eggs off of our potato plants when we find them. One year we had them SO badly…that was a lot of squishing. That’s the only thing we knew to do to keep them under control.
We actually are new at trying corn…so I’ll have to get back to you on the worms! (We did grow corn last year, but the coons got it before worms could. Grr!)
Would Diatomaceous earth work? I hear that it is an all natural insect repellant.
think spelling that wrong….diametous earth.
Ooh, I don’t know. I’ve not heard of it. I’ll have to look it up!
Thanks, Laura! I squish them when I find them too. My daughter scouts the back of the leaves for the eggs. A couple of years ago, my corn was junk after the worms had their fill.
On another note, I am addicted to your blog! I love it, and I forward to people all the time!!
So strange to see lettuce in a spring/summer garden. In Arizona, lettuce is strictly a fall/winter plant. But is does look beautiful. Here, our growing season is starting to die down. Another month or so and the only thing that will be doing well is the melons, squash and corn.
How did the potatoes do in the trash can last year? We have limited space, but I would love to do potatoes if I could.
They did okay…not great. This year we’re using MUCH better soil than we used last year, so I have high hopes.
We love our garden too and are having a blast figuring out what to do with our surplus of cucumbers this year! So much fun! http://themarathonmom.com/preschoolers-and-gardening.htm
