Wow, Laura. You sure do talk about Stir-and-Pour Bread a lot.
Does this surprise you? Did I or did I not warn you that the Stir-and-Pour Bread would change your life? I did. There’s no way I will ever go back to the “old way” of making bread when this recipe makes a bread just as good with such a tiny amount of effort. I can’t stop talking about it!!!!!
We could talk about the weather if you want. Brr. It’s cold. I could really go for some warm homemade bread.
Well, I tried.
So guess what? All of the dry ingredients for Stir-and-Pour Bread fit in a one-quart jar! This means that you can fill jars with bread mix, tie them up with pretty ribbons, and give the gift that will change people’s lives!
I mean, Jesus is really what changes people’s lives. But Jesus is the Bread of Life, so there is a very deep connection here that we should discuss at length. Perhaps while the bread is in the oven baking???
This gift idea costs about $1.00 per jar. For a more elaborate gift that is still on the frugal side, how about gifting this jar of bread mix with a new ceramic bread dish? Who wouldn’t love that?? You could include a jar of homemade jelly. Maybe a jug of honey. A stick of butter? Well, that might be taking things too far.
Stir-and-Pour Bread Mix in a Jar
- 4 cups flour (I use freshly ground hard white wheat)
- 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 teaspoon sea salt
- 2 Tablespoons sucanat or sugar
- Stir ingredients and funnel into a quart-sized jar.
- Add gift tag with instructions to add water and bake!
I created a printable with instructions on how to stir together the bread and bake it. Print them, cut them, and tie them onto your gift jar!

Check out the other recent low cost gift ideas I shared earlier this week. Tis the season to turn food into gifts, right? Right.
How long will the flour be good for? Did you use flour that you milled or do you recommend store bought so it lasts longer? I like this idea:)
I used freshly milled. Ideally, the flour should be kept in the freezer and/or used within just a week. But I’ve had freshly milled flour last out of the freezer for longer than a month with no problem. It’s less nutritious this way, but still okay. :)
Great idea. Thanks, Laura! I think this is just the thing for teacher and neighbor gifts.
You’re awesome. Also hilarious.
Hey do you think Stir and Pour Bread will work with All-Purpose Flour? I’d love to give this as gifts, but most of my friends are not fans of WW bread.
I do think it would work, though I haven’t tried it before. I’d give it a test drive before making it for your friends, just to be sure!
What flour sold at Walmart or Kroger would be best? Overwhelmed by the choices.
I’d see if you can find a White Whole Wheat Flour. That is whole wheat flour that is ground from white wheat berries. It is whole wheat, only with a lighter, fluffier grain. My Walmart carries this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079R45FFC?ie=UTF8&tag=wwwheavenlyho-20&camp=1789&linkCode=xm2&creativeASIN=B079R45FFC
You saved the day! I always make bread for my staff at work and its a big job. So guess what they are going to get to make there own!!!WooHoo
Thank you
I feel like a failure. I tried the mix bread instead of making normal in my Bosch mixer. Well, I messed it up. I thought that I could have kids help not pay close attention. Too much kid help and not enough attention later, and it still tasted ok, but not the same as normal bread.
Naw, you’re not a failure. It’ll work better next time. :)
I just mixed the ingredients, and I have quite a bit left over. In other words, it all doesn’t fit in the quart jar. What did I do wrong? I know I measured correctly. Funny thing. .. I was thinking as I was measuring the four cups of flour, “4 cups equals one quart, and there are more ingredients to fit in the jar still. .. How’s this gonna work? ” And sure enough… it doesn’t all fit. :P Will the recipe work with just the amount I already put in the jar?
Ok. Ok. Ok. I got it. Silly me… It does fit if I pack it in… Whew! Duh. Sorry. It takes me awhile sometimes to figure some things out. Thanks for your patience. ?
What size bread pan did you use to bake your bread? I have several sizes and usually the 8″ X 4″ is a standard size but in the picture, your pan looks larger.
I use a 9 inch. :)
Do you have a high altitude version of this recipe? Thank you
I’m sorry that I don’t. :( Hope you can figure out a way to make this work for you. It’s such an awesome, easy bread!
Hello–does anyone have high altitude adjustments for this recipe? thank you
What about the yeast? My active dry yeast says its supposed to be refrigerated? Do i keep the jars refrigerated before giving them away?
Yes, that would probably be best. In my experience though, leaving the mixture out of the fridge for a few days doesn’t hurt it. :)
How long will this last in the jar. It seems like the yeast would continue to grow and eventually explode! However, science was never my strong suit :) Should I put a “use by” ?
The yeast won’t be activated until the recipient pours out the dry ingredients from the jar and adds water. So no worries!
I really want to use this for gifts but have never made bread and am overwhelmed by the type of flour and rules of yeast. Can I purchase your flour at walmart/kroger? And should I use packets of dry active yeast for the jars (or use bulk dry active yeast and just suggest using within two weeks?) Is sea salt regular salt? Thank you! I’m really excited about this!
Yes, you can purchase flour at Walmart. Ours carries this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079R45FFC?ie=UTF8&tag=wwwheavenlyho-20&camp=1789&linkCode=xm2&creativeASIN=B079R45FFC which is one of my favorite brands. I use bulk dry active yeast and yes, I’d suggest using it or freezing it within two weeks. I use Redmonds Real Sea Salt, but any will do!
