Why You Want Homemade Ice Cream

May 13, 2011 by Laura 31 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Like I really need to give you a reason to want homemade ice cream? Especially the really creamy kind. The really creamy kind with homemade hot fudge sauce on it. (Now I’m just being cruel, aren’t I?)

I just wanted to remind you about the Ice Cream Experiment that I conducted about a year ago, in case you’re new here or in case you’ve forgotten.

To be inspired to make Homemade Ice Cream or to at least be encouraged to buy a more “real ingredient” variety of ice cream at the store, check out the following posts:

  • The Ice Cream Experiment, part 1
  • The Ice Cream Experiment, part 2
  • Which Ice Cream Maker (just in case you’re curious)
  • Recipe for Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream (that’s healthy enough to eat for breakfast!) and tastes great if made with Homemade Vanilla Extract and topped with this delicious Hot Fudge Sauce

Here’s a little hint about why you want Homemade Ice Cream :

icecreamex22sm

This was Ice Cream Brand One after sitting for eight days on my countertop.
Mmmmm, ice cream that doesn’t melt. Tasty.

Let’s all give three cheers for real, whole food, shall we?

Now that I’ve shared all that, I have to tell you that I’m sitting here shivering while I write about ice cream. Where we live, we keep shifting from ice cream weather to hot cocoa weather. Some days I’m so confused I make hot cocoa to go with our ice cream .

Not really. But I am confused about what season it is here in Nebraska.

Do share…where you live are you experiencing Ice Cream weather or Hot Cocoa weather?

Hot chocolate weather in MO. Two days ago we were in shorts with the a/c on. Thanks for this post. We got my mother-in-law an ice cream maker for her birthday last month and all of us are so excited to try it!

We DID eat ice cream 2 days ago when we hit 94 in Minnesota! But today… we turned the heat back on and I’m wrapped up in blankets, were I plan to stay until I can wear my flip flops comfortably. Hopefully that’s sooner rather than later…

Its definitely ice cream weather here! My husband saw that a brand of ice cream was on sale yesterday, buy one get one free. I glanced up and wrinkled my nose because all I could think of was the chemicals in that thing! We didnt buy it.

Thursday was ice cream, by last night here in eastern MO, it was certainly hot chocolate weather! I remember your ice cream post, and think of that picture every time I buy ice cream. Yuk! I stick with homemade or the better brand of store bought.

It is certainly ice cream weather here in north Texas! We’ll break out the ice cream maker soon. I’m curious about the better brands of ice cream mentioned by other readers. Breyers doesn’t pledge to use non-rbgh milk. For that matter, neither does Haagan Dazs. I’ve assumed if they won’t say they don’t use it on the package, then rBGH is in the milk. Some of the others also have GMO ingredients–any soy, corn, canola, cottonseed oil that isn’t organic or GMO free, is VERY likely to have GMO. That is why homemade is better.

Well, it depends on the day! We had hot cocoa weather for a long time and over night it went from 52 to 94! Then it was in the ice cream range for a week and now it is back down to hot cocoa weather (40s-50s) with rain.

I am always looking for ice cream recipes! We have an old (35 years) crank ice cream maker that we sit around and crank in the summer. And neighbor kids (who didn’t know you could MAKE ice cream) come around and want to crank (and then want to taste). It’s always so much fun and such a neighborhood draw!

I would love to find a GOOD recipe for dairy, nut and soy free ice cream. I know this site is not geared to allergies, but I do modify a lot of Laura’s recipes for my allergic daughter. I’ve tried multiple ice cream recipes and cannot get it creamy without cow’s milk, almond milk or soy milk. If anyone has a recommendation, I’d love to hear it!

We are making ice cream for my daughter’s 3rd birthday party this afternoon…but we’re using real sugar not maple syrup (though I’m very interested in trying it that way!) Speaking of the party, I should get off my bum and go clean a little.

It’s hot one day and cold the next here in Calgary. We made our first batch of the season last week – chocolate ice cream. Our recipe omits the eggs (milk, cream, sugar, vanilla extract) and we eat it like soft serve mainly – yummy!

Here in the Deep South it is definitely ice cream weather! We do have some cool breezes but so warm already. And there is nothing like homemade ice cream to cool you off. Yummy!!

I’m not sure it ever really becomes true “ice cream weather” here in southern England, but today for my daughter’s 4th birthday, by her request we had hot cocoa with breakfast and homemade ice cream after lunch. :-)

Yesterday, in central Michigan, it was definitely ice cream….my house was 77deg at 5:00am with all the windows open. Today, however, hot cocoa is the ticket. I am even considering turning the furnace back on to take the edge off. It’s rainy and windy and cold and plain nasty out. Our saying in MI is “if you don’t like the weather, wait 5 minutes”…it really changes that fast. Good sometimes, not sometimes……today, I’d welcome the change! Burrrrrrrrrrrrr :o)

I must confuse my days all the time because I love a scoop of ice cream on top of my hot chocolate. It’s great any time of the year and way better than whipped cream!

Oh rock’n it with ice cream weather here in Apex, NC! Was just outside staking my tomato plants until a Boomer started rumbling in the background. yeah! Now I won’t have to water my flower containers on the deck. We have irrigation in the garden, but we’ve not snaked any drip lines up the deck and into the planters… “oh, hu-b-b-y… I may have a new job for y-o-u…”

We eat Breyers all natural ice cream. We don’t eat it very often. I have ice cream MAYBE once every 6 months. I’m not too concerned about not having this or that for something I eat every 6 months. I’m to the point, if I get concerned about every little chemical, I’ll drive myself nuts. I’ve switched from the big things, but I’m not going to sweat the small stuff.

Mmm. Sounds good. Believe it or not, it’s definitely Ice Cream weather here in Alaska! What a beautiful spring it has been! I hope it continues for the summer. I’d love to be out and about with my new baby (coming SOON!) and toddler! And of course, being pregnant, it’s pretty much ALWAYS ice cream weather. Although, lately, it sounds better than it ever has in my life!

I need to get an ice cream maker one of these days. Even if it is just to make the dairy free versions. I am mentally planning a big gathering for my 30th birthday (in August) to welcome friends to our new home (hopefully settled by then!). I’d love to have a couple grills going, a table covered with salads and watermelon, and several ice cream makers churning out homemade frozen goodies. We’ll see if I get my wish! :)

We celebrated my son’s 15th birthday last Friday with a few of his friends and cousins. I let him choose what he wanted to eat and thought he might choose a bakery cake and ice cream. Instead he picked some Heavenly Homemaker favorities. Chocolate Chip brownies, we made homemade ice cream with your recipe and the Hot fudge. I looked for some banana split bowls and couldn’t find any regular size, but I did find huge banana split shape bowls at the Dollar Tree. My son (6’4″) instead of having cake and ice cream made a huge brownie banana split with fresh strawberries, pineapple and whip cream. It was delicious, so much fun, and we didn’t even have to compromise (it was all even raw cream and milk). Thanks for all your great recipes.

Here in Central Minnesota it is still hot cocoa/ice cream weather — yesterday had the heat on most of the day and today the windows are open and we’re going on a bike ride after the kiddos get up from naps!

That is so nasty. Ice cream should not come in a box! While Blue Bell may not be all natural, at least it is made with real milk, cream, and eggs! And it does melt- in seconds, not days. Homemade is still the best. :) I should make some soon…In our family, any weather is ice cream weather. But then again, we live in Texas! Hot cocoa is only for the few days out of the year that it’s cold. lol
I’ve never had Bryers, but I’ll say Dryers is nasty.
