Alright Laura. Gotta ask. I love your website and recipes. Thanks for your menu plan. I consider myself a pretty healthy cook but have never soaked any grains and see it on your menu plan often. What are the benefits of soaking grains?
Thanks!
Shannnon
BTW, loved your family photos. I’m hoping to have more little ones someday!
Laura says
Here’s a post explaining why I try to soak some of my grains. I certainly don’t always get around to it, but I try on things like biscuits, tortillas, pancakes and waffles. https://www.heavenlyhomemakers.com/soaking-those-grainswhat-is-that-about

Thanks Laura. I’ll have to try that soon. The healthy eating journey never ends. :) :

hey Laura! in the off season do you substitute lettuce from your garden for store-bought?
Laura says
Yes, and I have some cute little lettuces almost ready to pick out of my garden!
Carrie says
I just wanna say I LOVE your blog. Mainly for the recipes – there are a lot of good basics!! (like your bagels)
Keep it up!! :D

WOW! I’ve been really enjoying your website. I’m totally SOLD on the whole wheat buns. I didn’t even buy any at the store today. You’ve converted me forever! :)
I plan my meals for the month and always seem to run out of snacks by the end of the month. Everyone’s whining about how I don’t buy enough of that stuff. Any thoughts? What does your family eat? I’ve got two boys and two girls and I feel like they eat me out of house and home :).

Thank you SO much for posting about the toaster oven ‘purchase’ — I missed the original post but just read several of the comments.
I have been looking for a recommendation for a family-sized toaster oven I could buy with my Swag Bucks, so I will be eager to hear your opinion on your purchase after you’ve had it a while :-)
My DH bought me a new toaster for Christmas, but I’m looking at a toaster oven as a replacement for the unhealthy-for-us microwave oven.

I’m excited for you and your new toaster oven. I wish I had room for one… Just curious did you get the one that does rotisserie as well? That is the one I drool over occasionally. :)
Laura says
No, this one doesn’t do rotisserie. I didn’t think about looking for that fun feature!

Tee-hee. Do your boys really eat “soaked” pancakes? Are they soggy to begin with, or do they get “soaked” with syrup? Just kidding.
But, do you make your own syrup, and what flavors do you make? I have made maple syrup forever with sugar and maple extract. I know I could improve that with sucanat, and perhaps some organic maple flavoring. I’ve always done it to save $$$.
Laura says
They WISH they could soak them in syrup!
I used to make my own syrup of just brown sugar and water. Now we use Grade B real maple syrup (organic).

Just made the bagel this evening. Yummy!!! I was surprise how easy they were. I hope my picky boys will eat them for breakfast. If not, my husband, friends and family will get some. Thanks!!! Love your recipes!!!
