I ALWAYS seem to forget May Day…until someone brings a cute May Basket to our door. Then the kids get all excited and ask if we can make some. And at that point I feel like it’s too late to start thinking of a plan.
This year…I remembered!!
We started working on our baskets three days early!
We started by tracing this pattern onto yellow cardstock:
The yellow cardstock pattern fits around a paper cup. The boys picked their favorite pictures from this sheet of cut-outs and glued them on.
(You’ll find the downloads to these here!)
These were simple to make….and ALL of the boys had fun with them! I think they turned out ADORABLE!
We’ll be filling the baskets with Tiny Cookie Bites. These cute little cookies are fun to make and yummy to pop into your mouth!
Tiny Cookie Bites
1 stick butter, melted
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 t. sea salt
1/2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. vanilla
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
Mix together melted butter and brown sugar. Stir in egg, salt, baking soda and vanilla. Add flour and mix thoroughly. Place tiny bits of dough on a baking sheet and bake for 7-8 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
Find all the instructions and download the patterns and picture cut-outs in the Clever Creations section of the HeavenlyHomemakers site here. They are free for you to use! Have Fun!!
(As an aside…my boys can’t wait to go ring someone’s doorbell…drop off the May Basket and make a run for it! Ah…the joys of being sneaky!)

Ok, I’m going to have to do all of this with my boys! They love crafts and my 4 yr. old is at the stage where he can pretty much do anything with instruction!! The 23 month old, well…… he’s more in the destruct it as you go phase! And I have everything needed for those cookies on hand!! We’ll have to think of someone special to give them to. Thanks for the suggestions!

Thank you for the great idea. My kids will love it! I would have forgotten… by the way, did you know that Saturday was “National Pretzel Day” or something like that? Saw it on the morning news and was wondering if you had a batch of pretzels baking that day. :-)

I LOVE May Day! I always made baskets as a child and my mother would drive me to our neighbors’ houses (we lived in the country and gas wasn’t $3.50/gal). What fun! I continue the tradition with my family – most years. So thanks for the reminder.

My sisters always made May baskets out of different color tissue paper, filled with candy, I think, and left them on boys door handles that they wanted to chase them. The tissue was laid one on top of the other so that after they were folded and cut, all the different colors would show through. they looked like a tube with multiple holes. Beautiful. We lived on a potato farm in Northern Maine and spring was a glorious time after the long winter. Only trouble is, I’ve forgotten how they made them. Can you give me any hints? Thanks.

What are you guys doing for May Day this year?
Laura says
I’m not sure what we’re doing this year! Guess it’s time to figure that out, huh?! My boys were asking again about them just this morning.
Laura says
I would like the pattern for these May baskets. Thank you.

The May Baskets I am familiar with are made from tissue paper ,folded and cut so as to make a basket which can be hung on a door knob with a string or a piece of ribbon. As a young children we made them to be hung on favorite people’s door and as we left we would call out” May Basket for whoever it was for”. They were supposed to run after us and once they caught us they gave us a kiss. Sometimes for especially favorite people we would put a cookie or a doughnut in the bottom of the basket. This also helped to make the basket hang well. They are very delicate and make pretty decorations for the month of May. I double sheets of tissue with corresponding colors. If anyone is interested in directions please contact me and I will do my best to explain the process.

My mother used to fold colored tissue paper and cut it some way
so as to make a long lacy May basket. I have no idea how she
did it. Perhaps you can help me.
Thank you.

I would love the directions for the May baskets – My daughters
are hosting their monthly girls-bookclub. We just read Betsy, Tacy
and Tib, and in this basket – they made tissue paper May baskets.
This is the craft they want to do and I am clueless!
Thanks for any help you can offer!

Carole Swim, Please give me the directions to make those lacy tissue paper baskets. My momtaught me how but I forgot. She is now gone and I would love to make these for my 9 siblings. I know she folded a sheet of tissue paper and cut off a section of it and then folded it like an accordion and then cut into the folded paper. Thank you very much!!
