One thing I forgot to mention in my Ways to Stretch the Real Foods Grocery Budget post is MEAL PLANNING!! I have found it so helpful for my sanity and for keeping the budget down if I try to stay organized and make menu plans each week.

I’ve mentioned before but I’ll mention it again, if you’re new to meal planning or would just like a little  help with menu planning organization, Say Mmm is a great FREE resource!

What do you use for taco seasoning? Is there something you make or something more natural? I’m thinking your probably don’t buy regular taco seasoning… Do you?

No, I make my own, which saves lots of $$ and is so much better for you! https://www.heavenlyhomemakers.com/homemade-taco-seasoning-mix Thanks for asking…I edited my Taco Potoato page to link to the seasoning mix. :)

    Hi Laura,
i love getting your menu plan for the week….lots of great ideas. I am wondering if you have thought about or could think about suggestions for those of us who do not homeschool our kiddos. what would you send with them for healthy lunches? I am just giving the same things over and over. My guys can’t have use the microwave there for reheating and anytime I have tries to use a thermos they have said their food was cold by lunch time. I am tired of giving them prepackages foods.
    thanks for suggestions.

Hello ladies…I was wondering how many eggs one chicken lays, approximately,in one week…we live in town and i guess you can get a permit for one,but i was wondering if it would be worth it?

Depends on the breed and age of the hean–I really like my Production Red Star breed and Australorps. Most chickens will lay 1 egg per day when they are 1-2 years old. After age 2 they significantly drop off in production. I have 12 laying hens that are almonst 1 year old and I get 9 eggs on average per day.

    Teresa,
It depends on what type of chicken you have. We have had in the past Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks, Black Sex Links, and Easter Egg Chickens. With our 6 chickens we got 3 dozen eggs a week in summer and about 1 1/2 dozen in winter. Rhode Island Reds lay the most at about 6-7 eggs a week. Barred Rocks & Black Sex Links lay about 6 a week. Hope this helps!

Do you mean to tell me that homemade French fries don’t count as a vegetable?! :O) Oh, how I love the taste of fresh home-cooked French fries!!! I never make them, because I hate to clean the whole greasy kitchen afterwards, but I sure love them! Do you fry yours or do you bake them? (Baking *fries* just isn’t right in my humble opinion! ;o)

Maybe I’ll make some tonight, with a little (or a lot) of your delicious sloppy Joes… My house smells good just thinking about it. :O)

I know I’m late in asking this, but can you share the lemon cake recipe? This is my husbands favorite cake ever (EVER) and I’ve always used a cake mix (gasp I know)! LOL! He loves lemon cake with strawberry icing so I just mix up some heavy cream with eitehr strawberries or strawberry extract.
