Gratituesday: “Mom, We Need to Pray!”

February 25, 2013 by Laura 26 Comments

I was fighting a headache. It is hard to focus, hard to move, and hard to parent when my head is pounding.

I did everything I could from drinking lots of water to using my new essential oils to taking a nap. The pain began to ease, but still had me moving slowly.

And then Malachi, my eight year old, came into the room. He’s the one who understands suffering. He asked how I was feeling, and I gave him a weary smile – telling him that I was a little better.

Suddenly, he lit up and said with force, “Mom, we need to pray! God’s power can make your head stop hurting!”

I know this about God’s power. I’d been praying since my head started hurting. I’d been trying to release any tension and stress and just give it to God so that I could feel better again. But there was something so strong about Malachi’s words, and the faith by which he said them. I melted.  I asked, “Malachi, will you pray with me – the way I pray with you when you don’t feel well?”

And then he did. He took my hand, and asked God to make me feel better. It was sweet. It was simple. It was faith filled and powerful.

I love that he has learned that God is the One we turn to when we don’t feel well and when we need help. I love that he knows how to pray. And I love that he did for me just what I needed him to do.

A Toenail and a Prayer

August 7, 2012 by Laura 25 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Remember these?

Those were the toes my cousin painted for me over a month ago at our family reunion. I loved them, enjoyed them, and felt all kinds of pretty with them. I am sad to say that toenails are made to grow. Therefore, I finally had to remove them last week. (I removed the pretty painted flowers, not the toenails. Wow. Someone should edit that sentence to make it clearer and less disgusting.)

While I enjoyed the pretty toenails very much, what I enjoyed even more is how looking at them reminded me of the cousin who painted them for me. I only see her once each year now that we’re all grown up, and shucks, I miss her. And so, each time I saw my toes, which was quite a few times each day, I would think of Carie, and say a prayer for her. Yes, my toes would bring her to mind. (Should she be honored…or mortified?)  Each time I thought of her, I would immediately breathe a prayer for her. Prayers for her as she raises her daughters. Prayers for her marriage to continue to be strong. Prayers for the business she and her husband own and run. Prayers for her health. Prayers for her parents. Prayers for her siblings. Wow, it was a great month of praying for Carie. Of course, now I miss her more, but that’s okay. God’s got her covered, and I’ve got my great memories.

It just so happens that I also say a prayer each time I start a load of laundry. Why? Because filthy socks all bunched up in a wad always turn my thoughts to all things spiritual…obviously. (How I wish.)  Actually, the real reason is because I order my laundry detergent through my sister-in-law, Kari. Instinctively then, seeing the laundry box makes me think of Kari. And thinking of Kari makes me pray for Kari. Here’s hoping that Kari feels uber blessed, because goodness, I do a lot of laundry each week. That’s a lot of prayer, my friends. (If you’re wondering, the detergent I use is Shaklee – the only kind I trust for my family, especially with Malachi’s sensitive skin. Ask me more if you want info. Then you can pray for Kari while you’re doing laundry too. How ’bout that?)  :)

I pray for my cousin Deb each time I do dishes (again, that’s a lot of prayer!). I pray for friends as I drive by their homes. I pray for my children when I trip over the shoes they once again failed to put away in the closet.

Oh wait. No. I don’t. I should, but I tend to mutter (or holler) something other than a prayer when I trip over their shoes. I guess I need to work on that one. (She says, sheepishly.)

We’re all busy. We say we’ll pray for our friends and loved ones, especially while they are going through tough times, but do we always remember? I’m afraid I don’t always.

Having a physical reminder is always helpful, and sometimes necessary, for me to remember to pray specifically for someone. Who knew that God could use crusty socks for his purposes? :)

Oh, and hey, if you need prayer and you want to come over and paint my toenails, I wouldn’t say no.

What helps you to remember to pray for others?

Is It Expensive to Eat Healthy Food? Part Two

January 24, 2012 by Laura 37 Comments

Be sure to read Is It Expensive to Eat Healthy Food, Part One if you missed it!

As you consider your grocery budget, and try to make changes in your diet so that you can eat healthier without breaking the bank, here are three important things to consider:

1. Transitioning to Healthy Eating is a Process

If you’re looking to replace every single not so good ingredient in your kitchen with all of the best, healthiest, organic, free range, grass fed, yada yada ingredients, all at the same time – yep, you’re looking at a hefty price tag right from the get-go. Why not take a step back, make a list of changes you’d like to make, then prioritize them and start making small changes – one at a time? What changes can you make that will help you feel better about feeding your family, but that might not hit so hard on the pocket book? Read through this Simple Steps to Healthy Eating Series for some ideas to get you started. But don’t feel like you need to take all the steps at once. Any small step you take puts you on the road toward healthier eating. Some of those steps might just not cost much at all.  And some might actually save you money. How ’bout that?

2. There’s Not a “One Size Fits All” Plan for Eating Healthy

What works for our family may not work for your family. My food resources are likely to be much different from your food resources. The cost of food where I live may be much different from the cost where you live. I’ve heard of free range eggs costing people all the way from $1.00 per dozen to $8.00 per dozen. I’ve gotta say, if free range eggs cost me $8.00 per dozen, I’m pretty sure we’d eat very few eggs and I’d simply buy the regular, cheap ones from the store to use when I bake. Thankfully, I’m blessed to get free range eggs for just $2.50/dozen – a great price if you ask me!

Each family has a different amount to spend on groceries each month. Every family has different dietary needs. Every family has different circumstances. There is no “perfect dollar amount” standard for how much any of us should be spending on healthy food.

I shared more on this subject in this post:  “No Grocery Budget Comparing Allowed”.

3. God is in Control and He Knows Your Heart

No matter what you buy, how much you spend, what you eat, or how you eat it – your choices can honor the One who provides for our every need. If you aren’t blessed to find free range chicken that doesn’t cost the same as your mortgage, you will still honor God and your family by eating a regular ol’ chicken. At the risk of sounding goofy and sacrilegious – God can bless your chicken whether it’s free range or not. God wants us to be wise stewards of our resources and to simply do the best we can with what we have. He knows our individual circumstances and He knows our heart. He understands our desire to do what is right for our family and He will provide what we need to do just that.

Don’t leave God out of the picture and think that you must be the one doing a perfect job selecting, purchasing, and preparing food. God’s gotcha covered. Do not be so focused on trying to make healthy food choices that you lose sight of the One who matters most.

No matter where you are on your healthy eating journey – no matter where you land on specific dietary choices for yourself and for your family, God can and will be glorified.

And that, my friends, is what it’s all about.

What would you consider your biggest struggle in regard to the expense of eating a healthy diet?

Uplift Your Spouse in Prayer

Uplift Your Spouse in Prayer

Intercessory Prayer – Matt’s Thoughts

Blogs are great because run-on sentences are acceptable. So, here goes.

I pray for my children, the elders of my local church, the movers and shakers of our country, those with specifics needs I know about. I pray for those in tragedies many miles away because that is sometimes the only way I can help. But I feel like I can pray best for myself and the one I know most intimately, the one I share the most joy and pain with, the one I’ve failed the most, the one who needs my grace, the one I’m teaming up with to parent our children, the one who lives with my annoying habits, the one encouraging and sharpening me in my faith, the one who vowed for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health until death do us part, the one I committed myself to for life, the one…praying for me.

No Greater Gift – Laura’s Thoughts

Wives, we can try to do all the right things. We can cook his favorite meals, work to manage our home in a way that is most pleasing to him, and try to meet his needs in all the ways he prefers. But none of these tasks are as important to our healthy marriage as making it a priority to pray for our husband’s needs, and asking God to grow his character into the godly man he needs to be.

Husbands, you can be a hard worker, provide well for your family, help out around the house, and work to meet your wife’s needs in all the ways she prefers. But if you are not praying for her, bringing her needs before the Father, asking God to work in her heart for His purposes…something vitally important will be lacking in your marriage relationship.

There is no greater gift we can give our spouse than the gift of prayer. Uplift one another before God. He’s waiting to hear you and to work in your relationship in mighty ways.

Pray WITH Each Other

Pray With Each Other

Innermost– Matt’s Thoughts

Praying together is ultimate intimacy. The origin of the word intimate comes from the Latin intimus meaning “innermost.” So this isn’t, “Thank you God for this wonderful day, and our many wonderful blessings. Help [insert name here] get better. In Jesus name, Amen.” I’m talking really pouring it all out to God allowing your dearest to hear your heart and hearing your dearest pour it all out to God. You are being intimate with both your creator and your lover. That’s what I mean by ultimate intimacy. Healthy marriages contain spouses laying bare together physically and spiritually. Yes, you make yourself extremely vulnerable in these intimate moments. Isn’t it great? Thank you God, that we don’t have to keep all of life’s struggles and joys packed inside. How great it is to share and bare your heart to the Lord with the one you’ve united yourself in marriage to.

While your innermost feelings flow out to the Lord, you are also hearing from the heart of your spouse and being heard. These connections to our Creator and our life-long marriage partner are vital. Sometimes, due to our busyness of life, different perspectives, or just plain oversight, we are unaware of a load that is weighing down our spouse. I have found that I am able to “check Laura’s pulse” by praying with her. How is she doing? How can I encourage her? What specifically is burdening her?

Why don’t I pray with her more? It is so beneficial for us. The excuses of time, exhaustion, fear of being heard, selfishly not really wanting to hear her, or whatever else I use in my head just disallow me from stronger unity with my Creator and my Companion. We all desire this ultimate intimacy.

Start Today – Laura’s Thoughts

If you’re not used to praying out loud with your spouse, this may possibly sound a little bit stressful to you. Oh, but can I urge you to work toward it anyway? It is beautiful to experience, these moments with you, your spouse and God.

If you, as a couple, are not already in the practice of praying together, one of you must take the lead to make this happen. Men – I strongly encourage you to be the one. Offer this gift to your wife.

And Gals – encourage this leadership in your husband. Open your heart up to God in front of your man. You can do this.

When you pray as a couple, your marriage bond can strengthen in ways it simply can not strengthen otherwise. Prayer is powerful and effective.

Do you and your spouse pray together? If not, what do you feel is holding you back?

Ladies, we know you’re reading here more often than the guys. ;)  We’d love husbands to read this article as well. If you feel so inclined please send the link to your husbands, or if it’s easier, we’ve created a downloadable article for you to quickly print off and share. Healthy Marriage Tips A to Z – Pray

Gratituesday: Prayer for Healing

January 24, 2011 by Laura 23 Comments

When my friends are hurt, I hurt.

Last week, one of my friends became very ill. I’ve watched my church family rally around her family, helping with the kids, taking meals…and I’ve been so thankful to be a part of a body of believers that cares for one another.

I’ve been fighting a head cold myself, so it wasn’t wise for me to head over to her house to offer any help. But I’m doing much better now so finally tonight I got to go for a short visit.

I didn’t do much. I delivered milk to her door and made a Wal-mart list of things they needed since I was on my way to the store. That was it.

But I got to hug my friend’s neck…and more importantly…I got to do what I’d been longing to do since I heard she’d become sick:  I got to pray with her.

Prayer is so powerful. When I feel helpless to do something to “make everything better” when truly, there’s not much I can do to help her body heal…I am so thankful that I can fall to my knees, take my friend’s hands, and pray.

It was beautiful, and I’m not sure but that she may have felt just a little bit better when I left.

I know I sure did.

Gratituesday: One Girl

May 3, 2010 by Laura 25 Comments

gratituesdaynov09[1]

My husband and I felt very convicted after our local Christian radio station made us aware of One Girl ministry. Convicted to pray. Convicted to act.

Brace yourself, but please read here about the sex trafficking going in Nepal. More than 10,000 young girls each year are taken across the border into Indian brothels where they are forced, usually within 24 hours of arrival, to become prostitutes. They are welcomed into the country by being gang raped and beaten.

Our hearts hurt…our stomachs feel sick after hearing about these innocent girls whose lives are forever changed.

Because our local Christian radio station made us aware of this and urged us all to become involved, we decided to join in to help. When you realize that you can do something to help these girls who are so far away, hope replaces despair. There is something we can do.

There is a place of refuge called Princess Home  which is run by a pastor and his wife. Here, women who have experienced the abuse of sex industry find hope. They are provided with counselling, job training, Bible training…a new start!

By donating just $11, we could make a difference. The money will aid in the ministry at Princess Home. We will also be sent a bracelet, made by the girls at Princess Home. We can wear the bracelet as a reminder to pray for these girls and for this ministry.

We decided to buy 6 of these bracelets…one for each member of our family. The idea of this becoming a family ministry sounded just right to us. We explained to our boys (with careful discretion of course) how girls are being stolen and abused and that we can wear bracelets to remind us to pray for God’s protection over them. The boys are excited about this opportunity and so are we.

I’d like to urge you, if you feel called, to consider taking part in this ministry too. You can sign up to pray for one girl here.  And please know that I would never participate in or encourage you to participate in a ministry that was a scam. You can trust the people at Tiny Hands International.

Today, I’m thankful that we were made aware of this ministry. I’m thankful that we were able to help. I’m thankful that this is a ministry that we can take part in as a family. I’m thankful that prayer is powerful.

Becoming a Better Help Meet: Pray for Your Husband (+ a Giveaway!!)

March 7, 2010 by Laura 152 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

helpmeet
Be sure to catch up on the rest of this series here.

Last time, we talked about working hard to make sure our relationship with God is strong and alive so that we can be readily equipped to meet the needs of our husband.

Today, let’s talk about praying for our husbands.

Besides making sure your relationship with God is what it should be, praying for your husband is one of the most important things you can do as his help meet. You may not be able to change anything about your husband. You may not be able to help your husband be successful at his work. You may not be able to make your husband become a stronger spiritual leader.

But God can.

God loves your husband more than you do. God wants your husband to be spiritually minded. God wants your husband to love Him and serve Him. God wants your husband to meet your needs and the needs of your family.

You can talk to your husband about these desires. You can hurt for your husband when he struggles. You can encourage your husband to do more of the things you want him to do. You can beg your husband to become more of the man you want him to be.

But most of the time, you just need to shut-up and pray.

Love your husband. Respect your husband. Take care of your husband’s physical needs. Listen to your husband. Be kind to your husband.

And pray for your husband.

Pray for his role as a father. Pray for his role as your husband. Pray for his work. Pray for his other relationships. Pray for his struggles. Pray for his weaknesses. Pray for his strengths. Pray for his spiritual growth.

The prayer of a righteous [wo]man is powerful and effective.  (Read James 5:13-18.)

Going right along with this idea of praying for our husbands…Taraleigh of FBS Books (take note of her sponsorship button on my sidebar) is offering to give away one of the books from her shop, Prayers of an Excellent Wife.
