Sunshine and Coconut Oil ~ A Weekend Freebie and Free Shipping at Tropical Traditions

June 12, 2015 by Laura 4 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I have two unrelated items to share with you this weekend. I’m squishing them into the same post to save us both time, then I’m off to check other to-do’s off my list!

First…

I love sunshine so, so much. I also love Jesus (so, so much). Which is why, when the sunshine is beaming down on my face and I am soaking in the warmth, I always think of Numbers 6:24-26.

The Lord Bless You and Keep You

When the sunshine is on my face, it’s like the Lord Himself is pouring His life into me. Ahhhh, I love it.

The brightness and cheerfulness of the graphic above made me think of that verse, so I added it in so that we can all print it off and enjoy the reminder of His promise of blessing upon us. Print as many as you like. Keep one for yourself, share some with others. May we all recognize His gracious blessings and gift of peace.

Second…

It’s always fun to find coconut oil on sale with free shipping to go with it!

Delicious and Healthy Ways to Use Coconut Cream – Your Ideas?

March 20, 2015 by Laura 22 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I picked up some coconut cream concentrate about 8 years ago because I heard it was really good for us. But it was early in our healthy eating journey, so I really didn’t know what to do with it. Coconut oil was still new to me at that time, so coconut cream concentrate? What was I supposed to do with it??? I was actually a little bit afraid of it. So I left it on my shelf until it expired – like really, really expired.

During the past few weeks, I’ve come across several articles sharing delicious recipes we can make with coconut cream. I told myself that the next time I found it on sale at Tropical Traditions and it is a free shipping weekend, I’m going for it.

That weekend is now. I just ordered myself two 16-ounce jars of Organic Coconut Cream Concentrate for half price, and I paid $0.00 in shipping. Next week, this will arrive at my house:

coconut cream

What do I plan to do with this coconut cream?

For starters, I’ll be putting some in my coffee as a super-healthy coffee creamer. I also plan to spread some on my toast (like butter or peanut butter). Then I’m going to play with some healthy treat ideas using this high-nutrient food.

If you need to eat dairy free, you’ll want to add this to your safe and healthy food options. Even if you can eat dairy, I think you and I will still enjoy this food. And we’ll all benefit from the high fiber content and healthy fat it provides.

If you’ve been using coconut cream concentrate for a while, I’d really love for you to share how you use it. Have any great recipes?

If you’re able, take advantage of this great BOGO deal with free shipping at Tropical Traditions. I’m looking forward to my order coming next week!

Order Details:

Find two jars of Organic Coconut Cream Concentrate for just $20 and add them to your cart (before midnight Sunday). If you shop through that link (which is my referral link) and you are a new customer with Tropical Traditions, they will throw a free copy of Virgin Coconut Oil Book in with your order. Use the code 31516 for free shipping to apply. This code is valid through Monday, March 23.

I look forward to adding this great product to our diet and hope you’ll share your ideas so we can all learn more about using it!

Use Coconut Oil For Fantastically Healthy Baked Goods (Free Shipping from Tropical Traditions!)

January 23, 2015 by Laura 12 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

If you make no other changes in your diet, at least switch over unhealthy fats for healthy fats. Butter and Coconut Oil are amazing, both in nutritional value and in flavor. Do this.  You will love it. Your body will love it. Your baked goods will love it.

Seriously, my baked goods used to taste so weird and turn out looking so weird when I used margarine. <— naughty word

Butter and coconut oil can’t help but turn out a great baked good.  They are real.  Real food makes real good food. <— someone should embroider that quote and hang it on a wall

Now the best news:  There are some great coconut oil sales going on this weekend. Take advantage of this and be on your way to better health (and really yummy food). First off, my very favorite, top of the line, coconut oil of all coconut oils is on sale this weekend at Tropical Traditions. Get two quart jars of Organic Gold Label Coconut Oil for just $45. This makes them $22.50 each for the highest quality oil I’ve ever seen or used. This variety has a light coconut flavor.

tropical traditions coconut oil 2
Next, Tropical Traditions is offering two 16-ounce jars of their Pure Coconut Oil for a total of just $12.50! That is crazy low, and I love it. Stock up!!! Why is this one so much lower than the one I mentioned above? Because it is processed just a little differently. While it’s not as high quality as their Gold Label oil, I still love the Pure Coconut Oil and it is still very nutritious. This one is odorless and flavorless – perfect for those of you who want the health benefit but not the coconut flavor. I use both varieties. :)

The best news of all? Tropical Traditions is offering free shipping this weekend!!! With a minimum purchase of $19.00, use the code 15261 and receive free shipping. I only purchase when I can pair their sale prices with free shipping.

One more thing:  New customers with Tropical Traditions automatically receive a free Virgin Coconut Oil Book with your order.

Happy baking!

Coconut Oil: Why it is Good For You and Where to Buy it

July 15, 2014 by Laura 134 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Why Coconut Oil is Good For You

I’m often talking about coconut oil around here.  I use it for baking. I use it on our skin. My favorite lotion bar is made from coconut oil. I highly encourage eating coconut oil and letting coconut oil help heal your system!

Today I’d like to answer a couple of frequently asked Coconut Oil questions…

Why is coconut oil good for you?

Coconut Oil is a saturated fat…something we’re told today to stay away from. My research has taught me to disagree with this. I’m not afraid of saturated fats. Please read this well written and well researched article, which explains saturated fats and coconut oil way better than I ever could!

Coconut Oil:  Why it is Good For You

Coconut oil is a stable fat, which means that it doesn’t go rancid easily like unsaturated fats do. (Unsaturated fats, like canola and vegetable oils, go rancid within just a few hours of being produced. This means that they are already rancid by the time they make it to grocery store shelves.)  Those living in tropical climates, consuming large amounts of coconut oil have low rates of heart desease, cancer and colon problems. Coconut Oil can actually help you lose weight and fight infections. It is anti-fungal. It has the ability to keep your thyroid healthy.

Where can you buy Coconut Oil?

I’ve not seen high quality coconut oil in my local grocery stores, but I live in a fairly small town without a lot of options. I have seen coconut oil at Wal-mart…and it works if I’m desperate…but it is far from great in my opinion.

I always buy my coconut oil online, as this is where I find the best prices. High quality coconut oil may seem expensive, but I consider coconut oil to be a healing, whole food…therefore the cost is worth it!

A good price for high quality virgin coconut oil, according to what I have found, is around $14/quart. I love it (of course) if I can find it for less than that! I watch for it to go on sale and compare prices at any of the following:

~ Tropical Traditions (watch for sales on both their Virgin Coconut Oil or their Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil.)

~ Vitacost – get $10 off your first $30 order!

~ Mountain Rose Herbs (Can be bought by the gallon here, helping this purchase to be very cost effective. Since Coconut Oil keeps for a long time…purchasing a gallon bucket is a great idea to help cut the cost!)

~ Amazon (Nutiva Organic Coconut Oil seems to be the best price at Amazon.)

~ Food Co-ops – If you’re a part of a health food co-op, you’ll likely be able to buy coconut oil through them.

What if I don’t like the taste of coconuts? Does coconut have a strong coconut flavor?

There are two types of coconut oil and both are good for you. One tastes like coconuts, and the other doesn’t!

Virgin (unrefined) Coconut Oil has a strong coconut flavor. It is processed in such a way that helps it keep the coconuty taste. I love Virgin Coconut Oil for baking.

Expeller Pressed Coconut Oil doesn’t have a flavor at all! It is processed differently, taking away any flavor, but keeping the nutrients intact. I’ve almost always found this variety of coconut oil to be less expensive. In fact, Mountain Rose Herbs has Virgin Coconut Oil for only $24/gallon + shipping…making it around $9/quart!!!!

How do I measure Coconut Oil for a recipe?

I addressed this question in my recent post:  How to Adapt a Recipe to Make it Healthier. I encourage you to read this post, and read through the comments as many of you shared easy ways to measure coconut oil. I pretty much just “eyeball it” when I measure! :)

What other Coconut Oil questions do you have? Do you like the coconut flavor, or do you prefer your coconut oil to be flavorless?

Palm Shortening for $0.24 Per Ounce – FREE SHIPPING at Tropical Traditions This Weekend

March 22, 2014 by Laura 12 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Need Palm Shortening for that Super Creamy Peanut Butter you’re planning to make? Or so that you can make Whole Wheat Pie Crust? How about Whole Wheat Quick Mix?

I keep waiting for the Organic Palm Shortening to go on sale at a deeper discount at Tropical Traditions, and for that amazing sale price to coincide with a free shipping weekend. It keeps not happening. However, I see that the palm shortening is at least somewhat discounted this weekend.  Plus this happens to be a free shipping weekend.  So I did the math.

Because of the free shipping, you’ll be getting my beloved palm shortening for just 24¢ per ounce. What have I been waiting for?  The gallon bucket will stay good for months, and it should be enough to last you a good long while too. It’s a great price for a great product!

palm_shortening

Afraid of palm shortening? Don’t be! While most shortenings (like Crisco) at the store are to be avoided, this organic palm shortening is not hydrogenated, not prone to rancidity, and has no trans fats. In addition, Tropical Traditions is very intentional about sustainable farming and does not use lands that have been deforested. We can trust Tropical Traditions.

So, Palm Shortening. Go get yours. It’s one of my favorite buckets to have in the kitchen!

Enter the code 24314 at check-out for free shipping to apply. Don’t forget, if you are a first time customer to Tropical Traditions, if you shop through the referral links in this post, you’ll receive the Virgin Coconut Oil Book for FREE automatically with your order.

tropical traditions free shipping

Through Monday, February 24, you’ll get free shipping on your Tropical Traditions order when you use the code 24214. Orders must be $12.99 or higher to qualify. I love free shipping weekends paired with sales they are offering!

The best sale I found is on their delicious Organic Raw Honey. This stuff spreads like cream and tastes like a dream. Mmm, so good! It’s 50% off right now, so it’s just $10.49.

Their Freeze Dried Blueberries are on sale for $4.89. I love using these in my Whole Wheat Blueberry Streusel Muffins and Homemade Instant Oatmeal. They’re also great to snack on all by themselves. Hey – just for fun, type the word “blueberry” into the new Heavenly Homemaker’s Ingredients Search Box over at the top of my sidebar. You’ll see quite a few great recipes that are great with these Freeze Dried Blueberries. I am loving that new search box!

Many of us have been waiting for Palm Shortening to go on sale during a free shipping weekend! I have seen lower prices, but at least it is discounted to $30.65 for a one gallon bucket! It’s costly to ship something that heavy, so take advantage of the free shipping deal with this!

New customers – Tropical Traditions will automatically include a free copy of their wonderful Virgin Coconut Oil Book if you purchase through any of the referral links in this post. It’s a great bonus!

You CAN Save Money on Whole Foods! {31 Days of Real Food Reality ~ Day 25}

January 24, 2014 by Laura 6 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Let’s eat right and save money too!

When we were first changing over from processed foods and white flour/white sugar products, I was so discouraged at first when I saw the costs of healthier foods. I used to have so much fun shopping with coupons and finding good deals at the store. Now, it seemed, I would need to throw all my coupons away and maybe stop wearing shoes or paying the heat bill so that we could afford groceries. Healthy food seemed to cost twice or three times as much as I was used to paying!

sidebar banner5

A few tears and several months of research later, I found that while yes, some foods were just going to cost us more money (since they contained real food ingredients instead of cheap high fructose corn syrup and the like) – there were many ways to keep our food budget reasonable. God knew my desires and blessed us with resources. He always provides – no matter where you live and what your circumstances.

My coupon clipping hobby has been replaced by a new healthier, money saving hobby:  Figuring out recipes for healthy meals and snacks that can be made at low cost. Seeking local sources of food that are reasonably priced, nourishing, and support our hard working neighbors and farmers. Finding deals online that are delivered right to my door – saving me gas money, time, effort, and energy. I also had to recognize that the extra I am spending in food is money I’m often saving on health care costs – even if I don’t see the difference right away.

food187

Want to learn to make real food meals and snacks that are low in cost? My website is full of them. Want to find local sources of food that fit your budget? Keep your ears open, ask questions of those around you, and check out LocalHarvest.org to see what is available in your area. Want to find some online deals so healthy foods can be delivered to your door? I’ll continue to share them in blog posts as I find them (often!).

What’s fun is that online stores offer sales and sometimes even coupons too! Free shipping is my friend, so I’ve learned ways to make this happen for online grocery purchases. You really can’t beat the ease of having healthy food delivered (for free!) to your door.

Here are some great online resources and deals to check out:

Amazon Groceries

Did you know you can buy all kinds of groceries at Amazon? I am always amazed at the sales Amazon offers. AND, Amazon offers many grocery coupons you can clip to add to the wonderful discounts you’re already getting. I have so much fun shopping Amazon groceries! (Some Amazon grocery coupons are for not-so-healthy foods, so if you see those, run far, far away.)

In addition, I use Swagbucks, which I redeem for Amazon gift cards. This means I can take advantage of all the great deals I find at Amazon, plus use a gift card to get the food for free or partially free! Learn more about Swagbucks here.

Price-Matching

I live in a small town, so my grocery options are not very competitive. But I have a Walmart in town that price-matches all the grocery stores an hour away from me in big cities! Taking the time to Price-Match has saved us thousands! I price match the good deals on fruits and vegetables each week and we load up.

Read more about price-matching here. I’ve found Pricematerz.com to be a fantastic resource to make the list-making easier.

What is Price-Matching and How Does it Work

Vitacost

If you buy at least $25 worth of Vitacost brand products, you’ll receive free shipping. Or, if you don’t want any Vitacost brand items, you’ll receive free shipping once you hit $49.

Here’s a sample of how to get the most out of your Vitacost free credit:

What Healthy Food Should I Have On Hand? Where Do I Buy Them? {31 Days of Real Food Reality ~ Day 11}

Not sure where to start when it comes to shopping for healthy, real food ingredients? No problem! I have an entire page on my site dedicated to sharing what foods I buy regularly and where I usually purchase them.

Real Food Ingredients Resource Page

Click the image above to head over to our
Real Food Ingredients Resource Page

Many people assume that you either have to live on a farm or live in a big city in order to find sources for healthy food. Not true at all! I live neither on a farm, nor in a big city. I live in a small town with two locally owned grocery stores and a Wal-mart. The nearest Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Natural Grocers stores are about an hour away – which means we are only privileged to shop in those stores a few times a year when we happen to be in the city for appointments or soccer games.

So what are my options? I buy from farms close-by, I buy from a food co-op, I buy online, and I buy the rest from our local grocery stores and Wal-mart. When I do happen to be in the city and can shop at a more specialized whole foods store, it’s a blast! But since those opportunities are rare, I sure do love having access to the internet and my food co-op!

What food do I often buy to have on hand to prepare healthy meals and snacks? You’ll find that detailed list here. Even better, I have a printable Real Food Grocery Check-List included in my Let’s Do This! eCourse, which is very helpful to have in your kitchen as you transition to real food cooking. (That eCourse is a part of our amazing Real Food Reality Resources Package. Did you get yours yet?!)

Let these detailed lists offer you guidance as you transform your kitchen. Anytime I find online sales on these whole food ingredients, I always share them with you within a post so that you can benefit too. The ability to order healthy food ingredients online is a wonderful blessing!

Head on over to our Real Food Ingredient Resource Page to learn more about how I shop.

What are your favorite places to shop for real food ingredients?
