Buttered Pineapple

Last week’s checklist while preparing to go on a trip with the family was:

  • Wash and fold laundry.
  • Have boys pack clothes in backpacks.
  • Load van.
  • Prepare food for trip.
  • Make butter.

Make butter? Why? Because I didn’t have enough to do?

Yeah well. I was trying to clean out the fridge of leftovers before we took off. We were going to be gone for five days after all. While I usually use up my weekly pint of cream that I buy from our local dairy farmers, somehow I had ended up with three pints of cream that needed some love.

And that is why, in the middle of laundry and packing and a slight bit of vacation preparation chaos last Thursday, I made three batches of fresh butter.

And that is also why, in my haste to take the lid off my food processor, I spewed butter-cream mess all over my pineapple.

And my wall.

Which changed my list to:

  • Wash and fold laundry.
  • Have boys pack clothes in backpacks.
  • Load van.
  • Prepare food for trip.
  • Make butter.
  • Give pineapple a bath and get greasy butter slime off the wall.

And here you thought I was going to share a recipe for Buttered Pineapple.

By the way, if you’ve never made butter, you really should try it sometime. Here are simple directions for making homemade butter. And just so you know, the butter-cream all over the pineapple and wall incident had nothing at all to do with my lovely new food processor. It really was a matter of me trying to move too fast, which in essence, caused me more work and a little more vacation preparation chaos.

But it sure did make for a fun story. Just think of the laughs we would have missed out on had I been more careful that day.

I’ve never buttered a pineapple but the mess on the wall looked pretty familiar. Been there, done that!

Sounds delightfully refreshing ;)! can’t say as I’ve ever tried it, though I have used my grain mill to create a house sized snow globe ;)

How funny! After seeing the title, I stared hard at your first picture and couldn’t figure out how in the world it was pineapple (with butter) nor how it could be a “healthy” recipe like many of yours….. gotcha!

I just assumed that it was a grilled pineapple recipe and that you must have buttered it before you grilled it!!!

Hahahahhaah! Funny girl! I make a mess everytime I make butter. It’s worth it though right. :)

Oh thank goodness, I’m not the only crazy one. I was packing for our 3 week long trip today, and I made butter, too! (And scones, and your soaked buttermilk pancakes.) I had a lot of various milk products that “needed some love.” We’ll spend part of our trip in Nebraska.

A couple of years ago, at a “Stone Soup” themed homeschool gathering, they put all the ingredients for making the butter into a jar and had all the kids take turn shaking it during the duration of the meetup. At lunchtime, they all had soup and the homemade butter on bread. :o)

I, too, was trying to find the “pineapple” in that lump of butter. I thought you might be tapping into your artistic side and wanted to share with us. LOL!

I was just looking last night to try and find out if its possible to freeze cream. So, it isn’t? Costco sells a huge thing of cream and I don’t know if we could use it all up that fast but its much cheaper. So…. can you freeze cream?

It is my understanding that cream does not freeze well – it’s too fatty. Now, if you make it into ice cream first, THEN it freezes well. :)

Growing up, we had a cow and made butter- by shaking cream in a canning jar. Guess we never thought of the food processor! Makes me want a cow. Okay, not really. It makes me want fresh milk! Don’t think it would make sense to make butter from store cream- wouldn’t be cheaper or healthier than store butter.

I don’t think it would save money because it takes a lot of cream to make butter. I am blessed to have a great source for fresh, homemade butter from our dairy farmers for a great price. I only make it when I have an abundance of cream.

I love sauteing fresh pineapple in butter with a little brown sugar. So good on ice cream and hey, it’s some fruit, right?

Umm! Buttered Pineapple. It’s easy, butter your pineapple slices, sprinkle brown sugar over and broil in oven til starting to slightly turn brown. Or you could saute it in a frying pan the same way. It’s great!

I figured that you had blended the butter and pineapple together thus no longer needing jelly. Guess I was wrong. But it does sound tantalizing. I could go for some pineapple butter right about now.

I have made butter many times as a teacher and at home with my kids. Today I bought heavy cream to make homemade whipped cream for our freshly picked strawberries. Sooooo much better than that garbage in a can!

I appreciate how productive you are!
