Dear God, Where Are You? {A Guest Post from Lysa Terkeurst} Plus a Giveaway!

August 21, 2012 by Laura 261 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I am very honored to welcome this guest post by Lysa Terkeurst from Proverbs 31 Ministries…

“Mom, I didn’t make it. Please pray for me. I just feel confused about God.”

I felt my daughter’s deep hurt as clearly as if it were my own. I know what it feels like to want something so badly and have that dream shut down. That door closed. That opportunity slipped away.

She had been talking about trying for this special achievement at summer camp for 3 years. But she wasn’t old enough to try until this year, her 4th year at camp.

She met every challenge and could see the goal in sight … until it was time for her to light a large campfire with only three matches, one small square of newspaper, and a few sticks of wood.

She struck the first match and held it to the newspaper but it didn’t ignite. She struck the second match and held it to the newspaper. It still didn’t ignite.

She stared at the third and final match. Knowing a big part of the challenge was teaching the kids how to communicate with God and fully rely on Him, she’d been praying through every stage. But now, she didn’t just pray—she cried out to God.

“Please help me, God. Please,” she mouthed as she struck the third match. She held the flame to the paper and watched in complete disbelief. The matchstick burned but the paper did not.

As the final match burned out, she lowered her head in defeat.

Nine girls tried for this highest honor of finishing the challenge. Three girls didn’t make it, including my daughter.

When I picked her up a week later, she asked if we could process this situation. What bothered her most wasn’t not getting the camp honor. What bothered her most was not experiencing God’s power like the other girls.

They all had stories of God answering their cries for help in amazing ways through the challenge.

“Mom, I didn’t get that with God. Why?”

It was one of those questions you don’t want to mess up in answering.

I asked her to recall every step of her challenge so we could intentionally look for God’s hand. I listened intently for anything unusual and unexplainable.

When she got to the fire, I found it. There was no reason her newspaper shouldn’t light. None at all. Everyone else’s paper lit.

“Honey, that can only be explained by God intervening. He was there. He was listening. And we just have to trust there was some reason you shouldn’t have continued that challenge. We may not know that reason, but we can certainly trust God was protecting you … loving you … revealing His power to you.”

She put her head on my shoulder, “You really think so Mom?”

I whispered, “I know so.”

I know so because I trust the truth God has given me. Truths like these are anchors that hold me to the reality of who God is.

He is the One in whom I find comfort and reassurance: “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)

He is right here with me in the midst of my trouble, I am not alone: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

He is the One who can use my tears to water the soil of my heart so that it can one day be a harvest of joy: “Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.” Psalm 126:5 (NIV)

Yes, I know deep hurt. But I also know deep hope. So, I whispered it again, “Yes, sweetheart, I know so.”

Sometimes God’s power is shown as much in preventing things as it is in making them happen. We may never know the why. But we can always know and trust the Who.

A Safe Way to Keep Bugs Away (Giveaway from MadeOn)

June 28, 2012 by Laura 594 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

It is that time of year again. I love warm weather and everything that comes with it – except for the bugs and bug bites.

We are big fans of Bug Block from MadeOn at our house. It offers great protection from bugs, plus it is 100% safe for our skin. Remember the story I shared last year, back when my 15 year old was a 14 year old?

Last week, we sent Asa (our 14 year old) outside with orders to remove all of the green overgrowth on one side of our house – not a fun job, and one that is typically quite mosquito filled. I handed him the Bug Block and had him rub it all over his arms and neck and face. He spent a good part of the morning outside with vines and mosquitoes for company. Fun.

Later, I went out briefly to help all the younger boys haul off all the branches and vines that Asa had taken care of earlier. I really only planned to be outside long enough to give some direction, so I didn’t take the time to use the Bug Block. Mistake. I ended up staying out longer and helping more than I had intended, so one hour and several mosquito bites later, I came back inside.

While I tried not to scratch, I asked Asa how the Bug Block had worked. His response was, “Hmm. I don’t think I got bit at all while I was out there. Maybe there just weren’t any mosquitoes?”

Oh no. The mosquitoes were there. I didn’t see them either, but I felt them. Remind me to put on Bug Block next time. It totally kept the mosquitoes away from Asa.

And that’s my Bug Block story. It works and it’s completely non-toxic and safe for you and your kids. :)

I highly encourage you to try this wonderful product. You know how much I love MadeOn and how their Lotion Bar has completely (and safely) saved my skin. Having the MadeOn Bug Block to use is such a comfort!

MadeOn is giving away some nice packages today! Three of you will win a package containing the following:

  • 1 family size Au Chocolat Hard Lotion Bar
  • 1 family size Be Silk Hard Lotion Bar
  • 1 family size Bug Block Hard Lotion Bar

Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win one of these packages. For an additional entry, like Hard Lotion on Facebook. I’ll draw three random winners on Monday, July 2. Please watch for a post stating the winners as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen!

Use the code HHBug for a 15% off either a family size or pocket size Bug Block, good through July 10th!

Make Your Own Kefir – a Giveaway!

May 31, 2012 by Laura 54 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Kefir is a wonderful, delicious, and incredibly healthy probiotic drink. It only takes a few minutes of work to prepare. In fact, I made some this morning and was finished within about a minute and a half. In a few hours, we’ll have super healthy kefir to use in smoothies!

There are different ways to make kefir, all of which are easy. If you use “kefir grains”, you will save money in the long run. However, I have found that my busy schedule limits my ability to keep up with my kefir grains. This may be a bit of a cop-out, but this is where I’ve landed at this point.

Instead, I use powdered kefir mix to make jars of kefir. It is still very economical to make kefir this way, and wow is it tasty! I will be sharing a tutorial on how I do this next week. In the meantime, would you like to win a Kefir Starter Culture from Cultures for Health?

I’ve been a customer and affiliate with Cultures for Health for several years, and I completely trust their products and knowledge. Their prices and shipping costs are extremely reasonable. And the buttermilk and kefir I make with their starters are delicious!

Make Kefir at HomeToday, Cultures for Health is giving away three Body Ecology Kefir Starter Cultures. To enter this giveaway, you must click here and sign up on the Cultures for Health site. In doing so, not only will you be entered in this giveaway, you’ll also be able to download a free Kefir Recipe eBook!

I am very excited about the thought of many of you making kefir at home to offer your family a wonderful, pro-biotic beverage. (Don’t worry, you don’t have to drink it straight if you don’t want to. Add some fruit to it and make smoothies – your family will think you gave them ice cream.)  ;)

We’ll draw three random winners on Monday, June 4. Please watch for a post stating the winners as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen.

And stay tuned for a tutorial on making kefir – it’s much easier than you think!

Organize Your Pantry and Shelves with CanOrganizer – A Giveaway!

October 20, 2011 by Laura 255 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Remember my scary storage room clean up and how I like to stare at my bulk food? I’m very excited that my new organizers from CanOrganizers.com help even more to keep my food storage area organized, which makes it even more fun to stare at my groceries. (geek)

I don’t use many canned foods, but I do try to have a few canned items on hand at all times for quick meals. I’ve got my new CanOrganizers stocked with our organic coconut milk, canned salmon and tuna (all from Amazon) and some organic raw honey (from Tropical Traditions). The kids loved helping me put the cans into the containers – you put them into the top, then they roll back and fall to the bottom. This makes it simple to grab a can, then a new can will automatically roll to the front for easy access!

I put my 11 year old on the task of putting together our CanOrganizers. They have a great video to watch which helped us figure out how to assemble them. It was a bit of a learning curve as we figured this out – let’s just say Justus and I bonded a little bit over pieces of heavy cardboard. But, once we figured out the first one, the other three went together fairly quickly!

Here’s some helpful information from CanOrganizer:

The 11″ deep Cupboard Organizer is perfect for smaller spaces like your cupboard where you need to maximize space. This is ideal where a pantry or extra storage may not be available. You can simply use one Organizer or many depending on your needs. Fill up your cupboard so you can easily find what you’re looking for!

The 16″ deep Shelf Organizer is deeper so you can store even more cans! Designed to fit nicely on your standard shelf so it is perfect for storage areas like your garage or storage room.

And finally the 22.5″ deep Pantry Organizer is the deepest of the bunch. This system is optimal for those deep pantries or storage racks where you have plenty of space. You will be amazed how many you can fit in the Organizer and well organized your food storage will be. Now you can hit those canned good sales and stock up for your family, saving money and having food on hand for whenever you need it.

These CanOrganizers come four to a pack, making them very economical – a perfect way to get yourself organized inexpensively! Plus, through the end of October, CanOrganizer is offering a 10% discount to all of us, by using the code:  HOME at check-out.

Interested in winning a pack of CanOrganizers? Leave a comment on this post letting us know which size would work best for you! I’ll draw two random winners on Monday, October 24.

This giveaway is now closed, thank you!

Funky Fresh Kitchen Giveaway from Tropical Traditions!

September 4, 2011 by Laura 1,071 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’ve got several new recipes, plus another challenge or two planned for our Funky Fresh Kitchen series – but with company here visiting us and because I have been busy getting my face fried by the sun watching my boys play all weekend at a soccer tournament – I’ve just not had time to get any writing done. While you’re waiting for me to find the time to write something thought-provoking, witty and altogether life altering, I thought maybe I would offer another wonderful giveaway. You have signed up for our Excalibur Food Dehydrator from Cultures for Health and Nutrimill from Paula’s Bread giveaways, right?

Oh, and regarding the upcoming post that will be thought-provoking, witty and altogether life altering – I’m pretty sure you shouldn’t get your hopes up about that one. After all, I’m the one who has sleeves and therefore does not always use complete sentences. (You have to read this post to interpret that one.)

Anyway, did I mention that my face got just a tad bit sunburned this weekend? I am very happy for the wonderful dose of Vitamin D I received here at the end of summer, but you know your face looks a little bit baked when people start greeting you by saying, “Did Rudolph’s nose just explode all over your face?”

Okay, no one really said that, but I did hear a little snide something or other about Rudolph a time or two. But I’m over it.

So what do I always do when I get a sunburn? I slather coconut oil all over the sunburn, that’s what I do. Coconut oil soothes the burn, provides moisture my skin needs and keeps my face from peeling in scary ways. (And by the way, I am aware that one needs to be very careful about allowing oneself to get sunburned, so I’d like to take this moment to reassure you that frying my face is a rare occurrence.)

thumb-Virgin_Coconut_Oil_Gold_Label_Hair_Treatment[1]So back to the subject of Coconut Oil, my favorite oil for use in baked goods and on sunburns and other skin care needs. I think we are all aware that I love coconut oil. It’s one of the very basic Funky Fresh Kitchen ingredients I feel is important to have in your cupboard. I use it constantly (or sometimes even more). And here you have a chance to win some!

One of my very favorite online health food sources, Tropical Traditions has offered to give away a price package including many basic, healthy ingredients that are wonderful to have in your Funky Fresh Kitchen. This fun package includes all of the following products:

  • Gold Label Virgin Coconut Oil
  • Raw Honey
  • Organic Coconut Flakes
  • Coconut Peanut Butter

Wouldn’t it just be fun to win that package? Doesn’t it scream Funky Fresh Kitchen?? Think of all the yummy, healthy foods you can make with those ingredients!

Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win this giveaway. I’ll draw a random winner sometime after my face turns a lovely shade of tan, or next Monday, whichever comes first. ;)

This giveaway is now closed, thank you!

Nutrimill Giveaway from Paula’s Bread!!!!

September 2, 2011 by Laura 3,550 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

If you’ve been holding your breath waiting for me to post this awesome giveaway, you can now let it out, take in some fresh air and jump up and down for a few minutes.

What can I say about the Nutrimill that I haven’t already said? Nothing, but I guess I’ll say it anyway. It is my favorite kitchen appliance, it grinds beautiful, fresh, healthy, delicious grain for us that we use in all of our baking. It’s easy to use and will change your opinion about whole wheat flour FOREVER. There truly is no comparison between store bought whole wheat flour and freshly ground whole grain flour. No comparison. You haven’t had whole grain flour until you’ve had freshly ground flour.

What’s better is that freshly ground flour is alive and full of nutrients as opposed to purchased whole wheat flour that has been sitting on the shelf and slowly losing it’s nutritional value. Once I determined to get a Nutrimill, I worked and saved (sold food at our local farmer’s market) until I had enough cash to buy one. Oh, it was so worth the sacrifice and hard work.

219GVc6UkcL._SL160_The Nutrimill will grind wheat and beans—hard and soft wheat, kamut, spelt, hulled buckwheat, oat groats, hully barley, triticalae, rye, brown rice, wild rice, popcorn, sorghum, soybeans, split peas, and dried beans.

You can read all of my posts about grinding grain and grain mills here – just in case you need more convincing. ;)

Now, what can I say about Paula’s Bread? Well – only that Paula is wonderful to work with, she’s a fantastic business woman and offers incredible customer service. This woman knows her grain mills and all of her fabulous kitchen appliances and tools. She often offers sales and tips, which you will be informed of through her helpful newsletter.

The fact that Paula’s Bread has offered to give away a Nutrimill here at Heavenly Homemakers tells us how generous she is. Love her.

To enter this giveaway you MUST do two things (because the Nutrimill Giveaway Police will check to see that you followed the rules):

  1. Sign up to receive the Paula’s Bread Newsletter.
  2. Leave a comment here at Heavenly Homemakers on THIS POST letting us know that you signed up.

If you would be interested in receiving optional extra entries to this giveaway (yes, I figured you would be) – you can do any or all of the following, but you MUST leave a separate comment here on this post for each of these tasks that you do:

  • Like Paula’s Bread on Facebook
  • Share this giveaway with your friends on Facebook
  • Share this giveaway on your blog
  • Email your friends about this giveaway
  • Tweet about this giveaway
  • Like Heavenly Homemakers on Facebook
  • Subscribe to Heavenly Homemakers

That’s up to eight possible entries – how fun is that? Happy dancing all around!!

Let the signing up and commenting and facebooking begin. I’ll draw a random winner on Monday, September 12. :)

This giveaway is now closed…thank you!

“Learn to Cook” and “Teaching Your Kids to Cook” Book Celebration GIVEAWAY!!

July 27, 2011 by Laura 402 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’m not sure if you could hear me shouting for joy in celebration all the way from my computer here in Nebraska, and just be ever so grateful that you couldn’t see me dancing with happiness. (I have no idea how to dance – it ain’t purty.)

I’m always excited when I complete a new ebook for our shop, but just as with the Learn Your Letters, Learn to Serve curriculum kit I completed last year, these two new books:  Learn to Cook and Teaching Your Kids to Cook were a much bigger project and took up a lot more time than a typical ebook. Completing these projects has been a huge endeavor, and I’m so thankful to my family who has lovingly supported and helped me in extra ways over the past few months.

I love writing and have enjoyed everything I’ve written up to this point, but I have to say that writing Learn to Cook and Teaching Your Kids to Cook has been my most enjoyable writing experience ever! I put my heart into these books, writing what I would have loved to receive as a youth, and writing what I feel will help parents most as they teach their kids to cook. My goal has been to inspire, encourage and to give you tools to equip your kids with the skills they need in the kitchen. And of course, if I can help anyone learn to love cooking and serving others with the gift of food, that would just be the icing on the cake!

Teaching Your Kids to Cook is written for parents who desire to spend time helping their children learn their way around the kitchen. Filled with instructions, tips, activities, printables and over 45 simple, kid friendly recipes – you and your kids will have many opportunities to make messes together and get chocolate in your hair. Here’s hoping your kids learn how to put basic meals and treats together and learn to serve others too!

Learn to Cook is written to anyone old enough to use a stove (I’d say ages 8 and up). Not only for kids, this book is also helpful for adults who are new to cooking. This book can be handed directly to “the student” and while you should certainly be available to guide them along as they learn new kitchen skills, your sons and daughters, newlyweds and cooking novices can read Learn to Cook on their own and take off with all of the new skills they are learning! From measuring to menu planning to grocery budgeting – this book covers all the kitchen basics. Not to mention, it includes over 55 simple to prepare recipes!

Our goal is to offer these books (both downloadable and printed varieties) in our shop this weekend!!!! (Uh-oh, I feel a happy dance coming on again.)  We’ll share free samples of the books so that you can peek inside get a better idea of what the books include. We’ll also put together a package deal so that if you feel that both books match your families needs, you can buy them at a discount.

While we put on the final touches, let’s celebrate with a giveaway! We’ll give away one copy of each book (the downloadable copy) and will announce the winners on Friday, July 29.

If you’re interested in winning one of these books, leave a comment on this post letting us know which book sounds the best for you and your family.

If you’re interested in joining me in my happy dance, feel free to jump right out of your chair and participate. Just don’t be surprised if my clumsy dancing knocks you over. I apologize in advance.

This giveaway is now closed – click here to purchase these books!

Safe Bug Block and Why We Want to Avoid Toxic Bug Block

June 23, 2011 by Laura 553 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Oh, mosquitos. They are horrible, making a fun picnic or outing much less fun. Bug block to the rescue, right? Sure. But is all bug block safe for our skin?

I’m super picky about anything that goes on our skin. Why? Because our skin is our largest organ. Because what goes on our skin goes into our body. Because what goes into our body effects our overall health. Thanks to our son, Malachi, we’ve learned how to treat our skin well so that our overall health will be better. It really is amazing how important it is to take care of our skin.

So while I’m not a fan of mosquitos, I’m even less a fan of spraying harmful chemicals all over my family to avoid bug bites. From Parkinson’s to cancer to behavior issues, I feel that the possible issues that we can face as a result of bug spray are not worth the risk.

I’ve told you all about how the MadeOn Lotion Bar has saved my poor, dry, broken out hands and have made them continually soft and free of pain. I love MadeOn and am so thankful to have learned about their wonderful company and products.

Recently, I had the chance to try the MadeOn Bug Block, which is just as safe, just as non-toxic, just as easy to use as their Hard Lotion Bar that I love. Not that this matters one way or the other with how it works, but can I just say how much I love the way Bug Block smells? Yes, it really smells good. Even my boys said this, and trust me – my boys aren’t so much into caring about how products smell. (Unless it’s bacon…)

made on bug block
Great, so it smells good – but how does it work? Well, here’s my story:

Last week, we sent Asa (our 14 year old) outside with orders to remove all of the green overgrowth on one side of our house – not a fun job, and one that is typically quite mosquito filled. I handed him the MadeOn Bug Block and had him rub it all over his arms and neck and face.

So that’s my MadeOn Bug Block story. It works and it’s completely non-toxic and safe for you and your kids. How wonderful that we can take care of our skin and avoid bugs at the same time. Summer is saved!
