Great for Your Kitchen and Home Remedies! Win a Stainless Steel Zester/Grater!

June 23, 2016 by Laura 46 Comments

For some reason that we shall never understand, it took me until recently to grate the zest of a lemon, lime, or orange into recipes that called for this delicious addition.

Actually, I can attempt to offer some reasons – such as:

  • I don’t like recipes that take too many steps.
  • I only had a big stand up grater for a while, which actually did make zesting quite tedious.
  • That’s it. There are no other reasons.

Then I got a hand-held zester. Suddenly the job of rubbing a lemon rind across a grater to utilize that natural and delicious flavor was easy and quick. I think it goes without saying that my Low Sugar Cookies taste much more amazing when I take the few extra seconds to zest. Here, you need those recipes:

  • Low Sugar Lemon Melt-Away Cookies
  • Low Sugar Orange Melt-Away Cookies
  • Low Sugar Lime Melt-Away Cookies

If you haven’t been a zester for all the reasons mentioned above, I’m happy to share that this little gadget can be a game changer in your kitchen.

zester grater

This, my friends, is a ECALOO Classic Stainless Steel Zester/Grater. I like the nice non-slip handle, but mostly I like the versatility in that you can use it to grate or zest cheese, lemon, citrus, ginger, garlic, onions, nutmeg, cinnamon, chocolate and much more (even veggies). That it’s stainless steel means it’s safe for our food and easy to clean.

Today, they are giving one away to five different winners. Sign up below!

In addition, they are offering a 35% discount to everyone! Use the code H7WAL8BT to receive your discount from now to  7/30/2016.

As I’m learning more about making home remedies and trying new recipes, I’m finding that this zester/grater is fantastic for fresh ginger to use in the recipes. Ginger is a staple in home remedies, so I love that this gadget makes grating it so easy!

Here’s your chance to win one! Sign up here, then watch for an email on Wednesday, June 29 sharing the five winners.

garlic sauce maker1

You can’t beat fresh garlic, right? This little gadget makes prepping garlic super easy. Our favorite recipe that calls for garlic is my Homemade Alfredo Sauce recipe. We tested the Garlic Sauce Maker on this recipe and it worked wonderfully!

garlic sauce maker2

Here’s a little tip for you too: As much as we love how garlic makes the Alfredo Sauce taste amazing over pasta, we almost like this sauce better drizzled over steamed veggies. Oh my goodness. So good.

garlic sauce maker4

As much as we loved how easy this Garlic Sauce Maker is to use, we loved even more that it was easy to clean. (And I’m not just saying that because Matt did the garlic prep and clean up while I did other work for this meal.) ;)

Not only is it great for garlic, you can use this for ginger, carrot, onion, turnips, and other root vegetables. You can even use it to make baby food if you have a little one!

I think it’s safe to say most of us love fresh garlic! Our family is thrilled with this Garlic Sauce Maker and it doesn’t even take up much room in the drawer. It’s a keeper.

Stainless Steel Mesh Strainer – 60% off Plus a Giveaway

March 31, 2016 by Laura 175 Comments

I remember when I was first switching out non-healthy with healthy back when I was learning about everything from real butter to Teflon to raw milk to stainless steel. A little overwhelming? Only since I needed to throw pretty much everything out of my kitchen and start over. No big deal.

I was just at the point of getting stainless steel pots and pans when my friend said, “Now you need to get rid of all those plastic utensils that leach chemicals into your food while you cook.” I thought I would cry. Was there no end to all I needed to replace?

I wish I would have relaxed a little (lot) more then. Switching to healthier cookware and real food was and is super important, but not worth freaking out over. Slowly but surely it’s all been replaced. It didn’t need to change overnight.

Now stainless steel has become a favorite in my kitchen. If it is stainless steel, I love it and know it is safe!

stainless steel strainer

I recently had the privilege of reviewing this ECALOO Stainless Steel Super Fine Mesh Strainer.

It is made well and super helpful for straining small pieces of food out of liquid. I am especially excited to have this on hand for the times I have once again created lumpy gravy! This will save Thanksgiving, no doubt.

stainless steel strainer2

What a great way to strain bacon bits out of grease or small bones out of broth. I’ve only had this in my kitchen for a couple of weeks, but I can tell it is going to be a utensil I reach for over and over!

5 of you have the chance to win one of these ECALOO Stainless Steel Super Fine Mesh Strainers! Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win. I’ll draw 5 random winners on Wednesday, April 6.

Do you love stainless steel?

favorite summer things 2

Want to know my favorite thing about summer? Well let me think…SUNSHINE!!! (You know I love it when I interrupt myself to blurt out my answer.)

I love sunshine coming in through my windows. I love sunshine beaming down on my face. I love warming up in the sunshine. And I love laying in the sunshine, soaking up Vitamin D. (Responsibly, of course. Don’t go all “harmful UV rays” on me. God made the sun, the sun is good, we need Vitamin D from the sun, amen and amen. I don’t overdo it, but still, sunshine is my very favorite thing about summertime.)

Now, women shall not live on sunshine alone. (I mean, we also need butter. Duh.)

In celebration of summer (and sunshine!) (and sure, butter. why not?) – I’ve teamed up with 11 other bloggers to share many chances for you to win some of our very favorite things for summertime. What’s included in our Heavenly Homemakers favorite summer things giveaway?

  • A “Night Owl” Flexi-Clip from Lilla Rose (valued at $14.00)

summer giveaway4

Why are these my favorite things for summer?

  • I keep my hair pulled back in my Lilla Rose Flexi-Clip all summer long.
  • I wear my Half-Tee Tank from Deborah and Co. under my summer dresses and tank tops for modesty and comfort.
  • I start a batch of homemade vanilla extract with Vanilla Beans from Olive Nation in June so that it will be ready to give as gifts at Christmastime.
  • I safely protect my family from mosquito bites with MadeOn’s Bug Block Bar – and I use BeeSilk Stick, and Peppermint Lip Balm every single day of the year.
  • I use a Stainless Steel Fruit Slicer, Pastry Blender, and Mini Slotted Turner from Paula’s Bread for fresh summer produce and fun summer dishes.

A Safer Kitchen ~ From Teflon to Stainless Steel and Cast Iron

January 15, 2015 by Laura 37 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Some of the questions I’m asked frequently as so many of you transform your kitchens are:  What cookware is safe? If plastic is bad, what should I use to store leftovers? I’ve heard Teflon is bad, but what should I replace it with? How do you keep your food from sticking if you don’t use Teflon? What about bakeware? Is aluminum okay?

And on it goes.

A Safer Kitchen

During the next few weeks, I will be addressing many of these questions and sharing how I have transformed my kitchen through the years. Key words: through the years.  We might all have the desire to throw out everything we have and replace it all right away with safer items. But realistically, you may just have to do this in stages. Shucks, it’s no fun to be practical. ;)

Today I’ll start by talking about cookware.

Teflon and other non-stick knock-offs are only bad for you when heated. This means that looking at Teflon will not hurt you. Cooking food in it will. Bummer, huh?

How is Teflon harmful? When heated, it emits dangerous chemicals and toxic gases. Ever heard of pets dying as a direct result of living in a home which uses Teflon? It’s true. I’ve read it from multiple sources. :(  While people aren’t dropping dead immediately from this poison, we do suffer the harmful effects over time.

I highly recommend working away from using non-stick pots, pans, and skillets – making the trade to Stainless Steel and Cast Iron. Both are proven to be safe and both are wonderful to work with in the kitchen!

Stainless Steel

I had a lovely set of Pampered Chef non-stick cookware and I was sad to give it up. Eventually, I was able to replace it with a very simple and inexpensive set of Stainless Steel cookware, much like this set. Isn’t it pretty?!

stainless steel cookware

I think it’s worth mentioning that while you do want high quality cookware, you don’t have to get top of the line. My inexpensive set has lasted for years and is looking to last me many more.

Cast Iron

Admittedly, it’s tough to make scrambled eggs or pancakes on stainless steel. Cast Iron to the rescue!

Not only is cast iron safe, I love how it cooks food and helps create wonderful flavor. I have two favorite pieces of cast iron:  a large skillet and a griddle.

cast iron skillet

Lids aren’t necessary, but they sure are nice!

This griddle is super nice (I have one very similar which is also double sided). The size means I can crank out three times as many pancakes at one time than I can in a regular skillet, and when I butter the griddle well, the pancakes turn out great!

griddle

Now, with my nice collection of stainless steel and cast iron, I love knowing my food is being cooked safely. Again, be practical with your budget and take baby steps toward making these healthy changes.

What is your favorite kind of safe cookware?
