A Safer Kitchen ~ What to Do About Aluminum Bakeware (and a giveaway from Healthy Cooking Products!)

January 21, 2015 by Laura 387 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I really appreciate our discussion last week on switching from Teflon to cast iron and stainless steel! Today we’re going to talk about our bakeware.

A Safer Kitchen

Many cookie sheets and cake pans are made from aluminum. Unfortunately, this is not a safe option. Nor are the baking pans that have a teflon-like non stick coating. Here are safer alternatives that I’ve switched to through the years:

Glass

We all know how much I love my Pyrex. :)  For casseroles and cakes, I use 9×13 Pyrex dishes. I love these so much!!!

pyrex_4

Stoneware

I love baking bread in stones. Not only are they safe, they make my bread turn out delish!

Silicone Mats or Parchment Paper

I have several cookie sheets that are made from aluminum. They are in great shape, but I don’t like my food to touch aluminum. I’ve been using sheets of parchment paper to cover the pan, which works great – but even though I reuse the sheets a time or two, I don’t like using the paper.

I was very grateful when the folks at Healthy Cooking Products contacted me and sent me some of their silicone mats to try. This is a great solution, and a huge money saver. No more purchasing parchment paper! These mats are BPA free and can be used over and over and over. I lay them on top of my aluminum cookie sheets, and they protect my food. I am very excited about this solution!

healthy cooking products 1 (2)

My dad and his wife gave me this super nice air bake pan for Christmas this year since they know how much I love to bake. I am so glad I can use it now with these easy mats. They wash up very nicely, then roll up to store.

healthy cooking products 1

We made cookie dough balls last week to store in the freezer for a “cookie emergency.” My silicone mat fit perfectly on this cookie sheet. It does not get easier.

healthy cooking products 4

I also used a mat on my aluminum pan this week to make homemade pizza. It worked great, and clean up was super easy!

I’m anxious to hear what you use for baking! Glass, stoneware, parchment on cookie sheets?  I encourage you to look into these silicone mats. They are very reasonably priced and will be a big money saver since having them means you don’t have to use parchment paper.

Win a Copy of “The Good Lie” DVD

December 24, 2014 by Laura 125 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Here’s a fun Christmas giveaway you’ll enjoy!

I was just sent two copies of The Good Lie – a movie sharing the true-life story of the Lost Boys of Sudan, their lives torn apart by civil war, left to grow up in refugee camps, then given the opportunity through the efforts of church groups and other charities to embark on new lives in the U.S. It stars Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon and some actual former Lost Boys in pivotal roles.

good lie 1

I can’t wait to watch this with my family. It seems perfect for a family movie night this holiday season. The trailer I watched hooked me in, and I think we will all be encouraged and challenged by this movie. I can’t say much more than that because I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet! But who’d like to win my second copy?!

THE GOOD LIE

Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win. I’ll draw a random winner on December 27. Be watching for a post stating the winner as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen.

I’m Giving Away $200 Worth of My Favorite Things!

December 10, 2014 by Laura 1,106 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Actually, I’m keeping all of my favorite things. Sorry. They are my very favorite items and I use them constantly. However, I am going to give one of you a package full of duplicates of many of my favorite things so that you can enjoy them too! How fun is this?!

Now, the trick is that all of these favorites have to fit inside a stocking. This is why I’m not giving away my husband or children. (Not even their monthly grocery bill would fit inside a stocking.)  Plus, I really want to keep them around.

I also decided not to include butter in this give away. Butter fits inside a stocking, but sending it in the mail? Well, I decided to skip it. I do think it is fitting to ask that every time you use butter, you think of me with a smile.

So, no butter, no family members, and you also can’t have my personal Bible or my recliner. (Again, stocking size restrictions, obviously.)  But enough about what this giveaway does not include. What are these amazing items I’m choosing to giving away???

My Favorite Things Giveaway

The winner of this giveaway will receive:

BeeSilk Family Size Hard Lotion Bar ($12.95)

I haven’t stopped raving about these since I started using them several years ago. They are completely non-toxic and healthy for the skin, and they have saved my hands!!! I love this stuff and don’t go a day without it.

beesilk hard lotion bars in hand

1/4 pound Vanilla Beans through Olive Nation ($19.95)

Making Homemade Vanilla Extract has been one of the most fun and delicious adventures in my kitchen since we switched to real food. Everyone needs to make this.

vanilla_beans

Lilla Rose Flexi-Clip ($13.00)

I wear Flexi-Clips almost daily. They are crazy easy to use and so very pretty. They don’t pull or break my hair like cheap ponytail holders. I absolutely love Flexi-Clips. The winner of this giveaway will win an extra-small Snowflake Flexi – perfect for young Frozen fans and their moms. :)

lilla rose fav giveaway
Polder’s Old World Market Spurtle
($39.00)

Ever heard of a Spurtle? It’s like a spatula, spoon, and paddle all in one. Not only is it a super handy kitchen gadget, it is beautiful and the best quality utensil I have in my kitchen. It is hand made – pure walnut. The winner of this giveaway will receive an Original Spurtle Spatula. These are fantastic!

spurtle

Half-Tee Tank from Deborah and Co. ($17.99)

While this isn’t a winter item, you will be very glad you have this Deborah and Co. Half Tee Tank come spring and summer. I love mine so much I’m going to need to order more next summer. They are wonderful for comfortably adding a modest layer under tanks and dresses – definitely one of my very favorite things. (I just learned that this week only in the U.S., Half Tees are shipping for free!)

deborah and co 3

Hand-Made Slippers from The Purple Lamb ($80)

Seem like an expensive pair of slippers? Well, you get what you pay for. Regular $20 slippers from the store don’t last long since I tend to wear slippers all day long several months out of the year. I’ve had my Purple Lamb slippers for over two years and they still look and feel like they did the day they arrived. I cannot say enough about these amazing, custom, hand-made slippers. They are so well made, so perfect for my foot, so warm and comfortable – they are amazing. The inside of the slippers feature New Zealand Shearling – seriously the softest most luxurious thing ever. They include suede soles and are made from 100% wool. You will love these. (Available in up to an 11 inch foot.)

Oh, For Real! Cookbook ($25.95)

You know my cookbook is one of my favorite things. ;)  I use this so much that my copy has splashes and stains on it by now. It is a cookbook full of our family’s favorite recipes, as well as all my best tips for keeping life simple (and healthy) in the kitchen. I want you to have my cookbook!

ForRealBookCover6

Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win this fun giveaway of many of my favorite things.  I will draw a random winner on Thursday, December 18. Be watching for a post stating the winner as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen!

If that isn’t exciting enough, wait until you hear this:

Win “The Healer” From Perfectly Posh

December 3, 2014 by Laura 132 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

You know I always encourage the importance of being careful about what we put on our skin. I love that Perfectly Posh agrees with me. From their website:

Perfectly Posh products are naturally based and made right here in the USA. You can rest easy knowing that there are no harmful ingredients (no SLS, no parabens, no paraffin, no petroleum byproducts, no gluten, no soy fillers, and no lanolin) in our products…you will find only pure, fresh, and clean ingredients.

Putting natural products on your skin is so important. Did you know that whatever you put on your skin is absorbed directly into your bloodstream within 30 seconds, and is found in your cells within 20 minutes? What you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your mouth.

Yes! We need to be  so careful about what we eat and about what we put on our skin.

So, what to do when we get a burn or a cut, have a scar or stretch marks? Laura A., consultant of Perfectly Posh, recently sent me one of their products called, “The Healer.” I grabbed it three nights ago right before sitting down to watch a movie with my family and rubbed it on a small cut I had on my finger. I kid you not – that cut was gone by the time the movie ended. Wow. What is this stuff?

the healer

Well obviously, I had read the ingredients before putting it on my skin. But after it healed my finger so quickly, I was eager to read more carefully. It’s ingredients are:

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)
Cera Alba (Beeswax)
Citrus Sinensis (Orange) Oil
Vanilla Planifolia (Vanilla) Oil
Citrus Paradisi (Grapefruit) Oil
Tocopherol
Tocopheryl Acetate.

Hold on a second. Toco-what?  I had to look those up. Ohhh…naturally occurring Vitamin E. So shea butter, beeswax, essential oils, and vitamin E. This naturally creates a fast working, healthy for the skin – healer.

The next item on my agenda is to rub some on my 17 year old’s nasty scar from his run-in last summer with a branch in the lake at camp. (We have pictures. I’ll spare you.)  With how quickly it worked to heal my cut, I am eager to see how The Healer might help take away his scar.

How would you like to give The Healer a try? Laura A. is giving away 4 of them! Leave a comment on this post for a chance to win one. I’ll draw four random winners on Tuesday, December 9. Be watching for a post stating the winners as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen.

Gratituesday: Summer to Winter Clothes (Plus our Lilla Rose Winner)

October 13, 2014 by Laura 11 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

gratituesday[2]

It used to be one of my most dreaded projects. We have several tubs of clothes up in our attic. Every fall and every spring we lug them down, finding what fits which boy each year. While I’ve been ridiculously thankful for the amount of clothes we’ve had for our boys – most of them hand me downs – the chore of switching out clothes for the season was always long and exhausting.

This year though? I am reminded how nice it is to have children old enough to be such a huge help. We had the entire job done – from lugging down containers, to switching out clothes, to lugging them all back up – in one hour. One hour.  Hallelujah!

summer to winter 1

This job used to take me two entire days. That was back when the kids “helped” by resorting my piles thirty times, throwing shirts at each other, trying on clothes that were way too big or too small…you know the drill. I loved that everyone just got right to it, got it done, and moved on with the day.

Best news of all:  I did not have to be the one to go into the attic. I’m not a fan of the attic. It has a little something to do with a bird attack I experienced a few years back. I now put on my pitiful face and beg one of my boys to do the dirty work. Love these boys!

summer to winter 2

This pile of clothes is heading to our bi-annual clothing exchange this weekend.

I’m so thankful God continues to provide plenty of clothing for my family – especially as their legs keep getting LONGER. Wow. I’m thrilled to have this task behind us for the year, and as much as I love summer, I will admit that it’s fun to pull out warm sweaters for this fall season!

Pamper Yourself Naturally With Perfectly Posh ~ A Giveaway

September 18, 2014 by Laura 166 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

We learned several years ago with our youngest son Malachi’s chronic skin condition that what we put on our skin goes directly into our body, which means we need to be very careful about what we put on our skin. I’m not much into pampering products. After all, usually they are full of chemicals I’d rather avoid putting on my skin. But what about a fun product that can brag this:

posh 1

Well, now maybe I’ll listen.

Laura A., an independent consultant with Perfectly Posh sent me two of their most popular products to try out. Taking time to relax and pamper myself? Yes, that is a good thing. My family appreciates it when I take care of myself. ;)

Here’s what I got to try:

posh 2Best Face Forever (BFF) – Millions of microbeads scrub and gently exfoliate with a naturally cleansing blend of grapefruit and peppermint. Essential oils soothe and freshen. Gently enough for everyday use. BFF makes me feel like I am having a mini spa experience every day.

posh 3

Night and Day – Moisturize with lavender and glycerin plus natural olive oils. It’s nourishment you need to have your skin be your best. Smooth over your clean face morning and night.

These products left my face feeling clean and refreshed. I like that there are fun products available we can feel good about.
You might also want to check into the Perfectly Posh business opportunity to see if this is a good match for you. Maybe you just want to check out the products a little more. And maybe, just maybe, you’d like to win a fun package with Best Face Forever and Night & Day like I got to try.
If so, leave a comment on this post! I’ll draw a random winner on Monday, September 22. Be watching for a post stating the winner as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen.

My Favorite Whole Wheat Recipes – and A Nutrimill Giveway From Paula’s Bread

September 10, 2014 by Laura 901 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’m often asked how I get my 100% whole wheat baked goods to actually taste yummy. It is true that sometimes store-bought whole wheat flour can turn out a dry and dense muffin or bread. We know whole grains have more nutrition, but really, who cares how healthy it is if it doesn’t even taste good?

No Knead Whole Wheat Bread

Ahhh, that’s why I love my Nutrimill. Freshly ground flour is so amazingly good. It makes a world of difference in the way my baked goods taste. Even better is the fact that all the nutrients are alive and intact when you grind your own flour. Tastes better and is much healthier? Yes, please!

What are my favorite Whole Wheat Recipes? Well, all of them, of course. But if I really had to choose my top ten, I guess they would be…

  • Honey Whole Wheat Bread
  • Whole Wheat Pizza Crust
  • Whole Wheat Waffles
  • Whole Wheat Butterhorns
  • Honey Whole Wheat Bagels
  • One Hour Whole Wheat Yeast Rolls
  • No Knead Whole Wheat Bread
  • Pita Bread
  • Banana Bread and Muffins
  • Quick Baking Mix

How has your whole wheat baking experience been so far?  Ever since I started grinding my own grain, it’s made a world of difference in how the product turns out. Who knew baking with whole wheat (or other freshly ground grains) could be so easy?

Buying a Nutrimill is a bit of an investment. It’s worth it, but it can take a while to save up the money for one. That’s why I thought you might like the chance to win a free one. :)

Paula’s Bread is the sweetest!! We’re hitting the restart button with a Nutrimill giveaway, thanks to Paula. :)

Who Wants to Win a Nutrimill

I love my Nutrimill, which can be used to grind hard and soft wheat, kamut, spelt, hulled buckwheat, oat groats, hully barley, triticalae, rye, brown rice, wild rice, popcorn, sorghum, soybeans, split peas, and dried beans. It grinds these into a lovely, fine flour which can be used in all of your baked goods.

I use my Nutrimill alllllll the time. I mostly use my mill to grind hard and soft white wheat. Most people don’t even know they are eating whole grains at my house. They just know they are eating delicious bread, cookies, muffins, or pizza crust.

Paula’s Bread is the place to go when you’re ready to buy a Nutrimill. Her prices are always the best, and her customer support is fantastic. I have worked with Paula for years. She’s a lovely, godly woman. (Like Paula’s Bread on Facebook!)

This week, she is giving one of you a FREE Nutrimill. Who wants to win?! Here’s how to enter:

  1. Leave a comment on this post.
  2. Sign up for Paula’s Newsletter, then leave another comment on this post letting me know you did (optional).
  3. Follow Paula’s Bread on Twitter, then leave another comment on this post letting me know you did (optional).

Why Did I Choose To Share a Review About Plexus?

August 8, 2014 by Laura 23 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’ve heard from several that you were surprised that I would promote a weight loss product here at Heavenly Homemakers. Fair enough! It does seem out of the norm for me.

I have to say that I really appreciate those of you who are questioning, “Wait! Is this really a safe product?” I much prefer this over people just taking my word for it and not looking into it for themselves. Please never read what I write and jump right in without doing your research.  (Also, while I’ve got you – never listen to a sermon and jump in with what the preacher is saying without checking what the Bible says first.)

To those who are questioning if my promoting Plexus goes against what Heavenly Homemakers is all about:

I always encourage you to eat well, drink water, exercise – all the wonderful things we need to do to be healthy. That’s why I put those at the top of the review post. Those are FIRST. Always. If you aren’t doing those things, don’t ever think you can just take a supplement or product and you’ll suddenly start feeling better or achieve a healthy weight. There is no fast and easy ticket to good health. You have to be intentional about taking care of yourself, period.

I don’t talk about it much here on the blog, but my family and I take quite a few nutritional supplements to help each of us with specific weaknesses and ailments. We have all benefited greatly from eating whole foods the majority of the time, and I believe that is key to helping our bodies respond to healing and finding overall good health. But Malachi’s eczema did not fully go away until we had help from holistic doctors who gave him supplements to assist his body in healing. My asthma and migraines need more than just whole foods. I am taking supplements for overall body healing, to detox my system from heavy metals, and to help my body learn to digest properly. Asa’s allergies are finally more manageable, thanks in part to supplements. Each member of our family is taking vitamins and being boosted by specific remedies to aid our overall health.

So about Plexus:

I researched it as a supplement. I’m trying it out as a supplement. I’ve noticed a difference in my emotional stability and energy after taking it for one full week. A good friend of mine has experienced similar results, and since she has some pounds to lose, she has also experienced weight loss. She’s also watching what she eats, exercising, drinking water – well, she’s working at overall good health. I’m proud of her.

I promoted Plexus to you because I’m working with an advertiser here on my blog who asked me to give it a try. I’m not a sales rep. I don’t get a kick-back if you purchase. I simply wrote a review on my experience with this product, just like I do many other products that are sent to me for this purpose. Do the research and find what is right for you, just like you do about anything you come across.

I’m thankful I’ve had the chance to try Plexus, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with Stefanie to inform you about it. She has been fabulous to answer all my questions, so do feel free to share any you might have with her as well! (sbosket5 at yahoo.com)
