My Proof Copy of “Oh, For Real” Came Today! (Guess What That Means?!)

March 12, 2013 by Laura 18 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I warned the guy at the printing company:  “I’m probably going to cry when I come pick up the first book. Is that okay?” He was nice enough to say that he wouldn’t blame me if I did. When he emailed this morning to let us know he had a proof copy ready for us to come look at, I almost flipped! (But I didn’t cry. Aren’t you proud?)

We hurried and got the boys going on their school work, then Matt and I headed to the printer to take a look. When we got there, they handed the book to me, and once again, I didn’t cry. (Shocking!)  Instead, all I could do is smile non-stop. We looked through it page by page, discussing with them any changes that needed to be made, which thankfully, were very few.

I am so happy to share that this book, in its professionally printed and spiral bound form, is everything I pictured it and desired it to be – only better! We brought it home, and I continued to look over it – loving how convenient and helpful it is going to be to have in the kitchen with me.

the_book_1

I needed an excuse to use it right away. :)  Thankfully, I had some black bananas that needed to be put to good use. Banana Muffins it is!

the_book_3

I love that the book will open up and sit flat on my kitchen counter while I’m reading a recipe. I love that as I’m reading it I can flip pages back and hold it easily. I love that is such high quality. And I love that it will soon be ready to ship to you!

Here’s the plan:  We leave for Kansas City, Branson, and Springfield on Thursday morning. There will be a few printed copies ready for us to pick and up and take with us on the road to have available at our Meet and Greet events. Then, when we get home from our travels, we should be able to pick up the remaining printed copies and mail them out on Wednesday (the 20th) to all those who have pre-ordered!

So, the sooner you order, the sooner you’ll receive your book. Our goal is to have envelopes ready for those who have pre-ordered so that your copies can go out next week as soon as we pick up the books. Don’t forget that you’ll receive a $10 pre-order bonus if you purchase before March 19!

Oh, For Real: Real Food, Real Family, Real Easy
.

As for me, I’ll be getting envelopes ready for shipment, preparing for our trip, and thanking God that He made all of this happen. He is so good!

This eCookbook the resource so many of us (including me!) have been needing for so long!

Because this kitchen resource is designed to be your “go-to” book, it is filled with pictures, tutorials, information, and of course – lots of recipes. It isn’t fancy. It isn’t overwhelming. It’s just me sharing “how I do it” when it comes to feeding my family a healthy diet on a limited budget and with limited time.

This book includes my most treasured recipes that I use all the time. I’ve shared many of them through the years on my blog, but to have them all together in one handy book? This is so helpful! These are the recipes that help me feed my family healthy food without breaking my neck in the kitchen. These are the recipes that keep my freezer stocked with ready-to-grab meals and snacks. These are the recipes my family loves. (Even the family members who are picky!)

In addition to all the recipes and helpful information we’ve organized in the book, you will find “Real Quick Tips” sprinkled all throughout, which will provide you with simple ideas for getting ahead and saving time in the kitchen.

RealQuickTip2

Each time you see the “Freezer Friendly” button in the book, you can learn with a quick glance how to prepare that particular recipe for the freezer, and how to reheat it when you are ready to serve it.

FreezerFriendly2

How I Think: My Nutrition and Health Views (Sneak peek into my new Oh, For Real book)

March 3, 2013 by Laura 18 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

ForRealBookCover6

Over the past two weeks, I’ve shared some of the new recipes you’ll find in my upcoming new book, Oh, For Real!  Today, I thought it would be fun to share a small portion of the other information in the book. I can’t share my tried and true real food recipes without first explaining my nutrition views, right? Here’s what you’ll find on page 7 of Oh, For Real! By the way, the book is almost finished and you’ll be able to pre-order in just a few days. We are so excited!!

You can choose to agree or disagree with me and we can still be friends, I promise. I mean…I might gag a little if you offer me some margarine, but really, I will love you just the same. And if you continue to read, you will find all kinds of wonderful (if I do humbly say so myself), family-friendly recipes and tips for making your kitchen life easier. Recipes that are healthy and make your life easier? Yeah, for real!

How I Think (My nutrition and health views)

For real, people. Eating a healthy diet is not that complicated.

There is contradicting information all over the place that will make our heads spin. I’ve decided to avoid telling you the “health food” information that I completely disagree with, and instead tell you what I, after much research and study, believe to be good and true. (And I am completely convinced that I am right.)

I believe that healthy food is real food. I consider “real food” to be…

…the food that grows in fields and on trees.
…the food that comes from animals.
…the food that we can recognize.

I am absolutely all in when it comes to food in its real, true form. That means that my family cooks with and regularly enjoys real butter, real cream, real meat, real fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and real eggs. For real. We don’t hold back.

Why? Because we know what these foods are made of and where they came from. They didn’t originate in a factory and find themselves sold in a box or a tub. They have been around since the beginning of time. They spoil if left uneaten.

Processed food may remain in its unspoiled state for years on end. That is why, when your toddler drops an animal cracker or a half of an uneaten fast food French fry under a seat in your minivan, and you don’t find it until she is in middle school – both the elephant and the fry will look the same as they did eight years ago when she dropped them.

Real foods are nutrition packed. They are delicious. They are whole. They are real. I have felt so much better physically since giving up processed foods, and instead, filling up on real, whole foods. I believe this is because I am eating foods that my body recognizes. Along with this, I am filling my body with nutrients. Food isn’t just to be eaten to fill a hole. Food is nourishment. Simple as that….

More information about Oh, For Real! to come. Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm as we finish this project and have it ready to share with you. I’ve loved hearing how excited you are. You are all awesome!

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

With the launch of our Oh, For Real book coming in March – we are so excited to share what is falling into place to go along with it! This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Somehow, the timing just wasn’t right. Until now.

OhForRealMeetGreet2

As our family looks ahead toward the coming months, our calendar shows quite a few out of town trips. A basketball tournament, an extended family vacation, a wedding, a family service trip, a family reunion…

During each of these trips, as we are able, we will be planning a “Meet and Greet” time in various cities. I want to meet you – For Real! (Get it? We can meet “in real life”!) I want to get to know you and learn more about your life. I am so excited about this!

What I’m not excited about? All of the areas we aren’t visiting in the near future. There are so many of you all over the U.S. and beyond that I would love to meet. Unfortunately, we don’t have any family reunions in New York. Or Oregon. Or Japan. ;)  Maybe someday I will meet all of you this side of heaven. We’ll do what we can!

So what do we have lined up in the coming months for Oh, For Real ~ Meet and Greet times?

Thursday, March 14 ~ Kansas City ~ 2:00 pm ~ details to come!
Friday, March 15 ~ Branson, MO  ~  2:00 pm  ~ details to come!
Tuesday, March 19 ~ Springfield, MO  ~ 10:30 am  (Please email me if you are interested in helping me secure a location.)

May (sometime between the 16-22) ~ Denver, CO  ~ Purple Door Coffee ~ details pending
May (sometime between the 16-22) ~ Colorado Springs, CO  ~ details pending
Sunday, July 7 ~ Oklahoma City, OK ~ 2:00 pm ~ Vintage Coffee

Be watching for additional posts which share further details and specifics of these events. In the meantime, make plans with your friends to join us if you can!

Oh, For Real! The Book (Round One of the News I’ve Been So Excited To Tell You About!)

February 19, 2013 by Laura 85 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

The past few weeks have been very exciting (and maybe a little bit busy) around here. Why? Because we’ve been finishing a big project and making some big plans.

We have been putting the final touches on a book that has been in the works for over two years. I began working on it in 2011 and added to it as I had time and as more ideas came to me – usually based on questions from you. :)

Then finally, last summer, God allowed all of the pieces to come together and I began to work on the book in earnest. Now, here we are at the end of February 2013 and the book is almost complete. The goal is to launch the book the beginning of March. (Less than two weeks…is it possible?! We shall see.)

So what is this book all about? Mostly, it is all about how I always feed my family a perfectly healthy diet, every day, without fail, while maintaining a spotless house, and…

Oh, for real!

On the contrary, this book is about the real me and my real family, with our crusty dishes, picky children, and a trail of reeking compost juice that somehow managed to dribble its way out of the bucket from the kitchen all the way outside.

Oh wait. That was just yesterday.  That particular bit about fermented compost didn’t actually make it into the book. But you get the point.

Over the five plus years that I’ve been writing this blog, I have received countless emails from people asking me, “How do you do it?” How do I manage to work from home full time on this website, home school my kids, invite people into our home frequently – all while feeding my family a healthy diet of real foods? How do I afford it? How do I get my kids on board with healthy eating? How do I figure out what is healthy and what isn’t? And how in the world do I find the time?

If you’ve read here long, you know that I don’t always have the time. My kids don’t always like what I make for them to eat. And if you open any number of the closet doors in our home, you will be frightened by what you’ll find inside.

Our family is real – with a real busy schedule and a real budget. But we still eat real food. (Along with the occasional Dorito.)

Eating a real food diet is possible for everyone. For real. This book answers the question of, how I do it. How I find the time. How I manage to consistently put healthy meals on the table in a simple way and without killing myself all day in the kitchen. It also talks about how much I love butter. Are you surprised?!

ForRealBookCover6

Coming March, 2013

Oh, For Real is more than a cookbook. It is a fun read, full of healthy food information, time saving tips, and freezer cooking ideas. Oh, For Real compiles much of the information I’ve shared over the past five years on this blog (in over 2,875 posts). Now, you can read through all of those posts, scroll through loads of recipes, and try to piece together all of the information as you work to figure out freezer cooking, getting ahead in the kitchen, buying basic real food ingredients…

Or, you can just store Oh, For Real in your kitchen, which encapsulates everything my blog is about, and organizes it into 99 pages – with over 115 of my favorite, most used recipes!

Recognize this though:  I don’t have a flawless system! In fact, my system really is systemless. You will be able to take the information in this book and make it work for you in your real world and in your real season of life. Oh, For Real offers simplified information that you can learn from, then you can grab what works for you and drop kick the rest.

Watch for more information as the book comes together and is ready to launch. :)

As for the other plans we’ve been working on recently – you’re just going to have to wait a little while longer for me to share that news. We’re still working out some of the details.  And trying to finish the book. And going to our son’s basketball games. And wiping up fermented compost juice.

In the meantime, I will be sharing some sneak peeks into the Oh, For Real book – just so that you can learn more about what’s inside. I can’t wait!

For today:  Tell me something “real” about you!   Don’t remember the last time you cleaned behind your refrigerator? Did you eat ice cream for dinner last night? Do you need to organize your closets as badly as I do? Let’s share. After all, we’re all real, right? :)

Follow Me on PinterestI’m always one of the last people to get on board with something new and fun. There are so many neat things “out there” that one can participate in, therefore I typically make a very slow decision to join in – simply because I have to know for sure that it is going to be worth my time.

Many of you have shared how much you love Pinterest. You’re right – what a cool opportunity to find wonderful homemaking, cooking, and decorating ideas!

In case you’re new to Pinterest, this may help you understand what it is a little bit better:

“Pinterest lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all, you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.”

Because of the urging of many, I finally asked my friend Emily, who happens to be a Pinterest expert, to help me get my site up and running with Pinterest. She’s been working hard to pin many of my archived recipes and tutorials (plus many other posts!), getting them all organized into categories to make it easy for you to follow me there and find what you are looking for. A  huge thanks goes out to Emily for all of her hard work on this.

And so, I am now officially inviting you all to follow Heavenly Homemakers on Pinterest. Feel free to re-pin any posts you see that interest you!

Homemade Vanilla Extract For Sale – While Supplies Last! (SOLD OUT!)

March 10, 2012 by Laura 13 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

It’s vanilla time! We have been “brewing” a big batch of homemade vanilla extract for six months, and it now bottled and ready to send to you!

Our vanilla is absolutely pure, with nothing added. Read how we make (and how YOU can make) homemade vanilla extract in this post. Because we use a large number of vanilla beans in each batch and allow our vanilla to sit for six months, this vanilla is double strength, which means that you can use half the amount called for in a recipe. Yes, that means that each bottle of our vanilla will last you twice as long as a typical bottle of vanilla!

To cut down on cost, we’d love to encourage you to look into making your own vanilla extract. It’s easy, it’s fun, and it’s a big money saver. Plus,  you’ll find that homemade vanilla extract makes a great gift.

For those of you who do not desire to make homemade vanilla, or if you want a quality vanilla on hand to get you by until your own vanilla is ready to use, we are happy to offer our Heavenly Homemakers Vanilla Extract!

If you are interested, I advise you to act fast. Our supply usually sells out within 24 hours – last time, it only lasted for five hours!

The cost of shipping is included in the price. The price you see is the total price you’ll pay. Matt and the boys will package and send your vanilla to you right away, so you should receive it within a week to ten days. Quantities are limited – sales made on a first come, first serve basis…thanks for understanding!

This vanilla is available to U.S. purchasers only.

Healthy Desserts!! (And Great Ebook Sales!)

March 6, 2012 by Laura 17 Comments

I’ve told you about my sweet tooth. You know I love my desserts. I seem to think I can’t live without chocolate. Daily. At least once. If not twice. It can be a problem.

That’s why I like to have fun experimenting with natural sugars and whole food ingredients to put together tasty treats that are better for us. Does making these natural sugar treats give me permission to eat the entire pan? Um…no. Unfortunately, I still have to use some self control. Unless it’s chocolate. Oh wait, no – even if it’s chocolate. Especially when it’s chocolate.

Here’s an example of one of our favorite natural sugar treats:  Coconut Macaroons. They are easy to make, use real maple syrup to sweeten them, and hey look at that – this recipe doesn’t even contain grains!

Coconut Macaroons

4 egg whites
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 Tablespoons arrowroot powder
1/2 cup real maple syrup
2 cups unsweetened, shredded coconut

Separate eggs, putting the whites in a mixing bowl and the yolks in the fridge for tomorrow’s breakfast. Beat the whites and salt with a hand mixer until soft peaks form. Continue to beat and add vanilla, arrowroot powder and maple syrup, one at a time. Fold in the coconut. Drop by spoonfuls onto a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes, then turn the oven to 200 degrees for one hour to let them crisp up.

Announcing: Gifts in a Jar! {A Group Effort}

October 26, 2011 by Laura 26 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this here or not, but I really, really love  jars. Oh, I’m sorry, it seems that I have spoken of my jar obsession one or forty-eight times.

Doesn’t it just make sense then that we put together some posts and even an eBook featuring Gifts in a Jar? Yes, it really does make perfect sense. We’ve decided, since you are all full of so many wonderful ideas, to make this a group project. Come closer my friends – let me share the details.

During the next two weeks, I’ll be compiling any and all (okay, not necessarily all – see the rules below) of your Gifts in a Jar ideas. (I will give you full credit in the eBook for your idea.)  While gifts of food and baking mixes are perfect for this project, I’d also love to see your ideas go beyond food. Do you have ideas for natural bath and body or household products? Know any fun ways to decorate jars or use jars for home decor? Oooh, and does anybody have a great tutorial on making liquid soap dispensers out of jars? I’ve seen those before and they are SO cool!!!

The possiblilites are endless for gifts we can put together in jars. With Christmas coming up, the timing couldn’t be better. (Although, I’d love for this eBook to be full of ideas that can be used any time of the year – not just Christmas.)

You may recall a post in which I shared Teresa’s Gift Certificate in a Jar idea. This, of course, will be featured in the eBook.

Here are the rules and guidelines for Gifts in a Jar submissions:

  • You may email me up to three ideas. One idea is fine though, or yes, even two.
  • Email your ideas to laura @ heavenlyhomemakers dot com no earlier than yesterday and no later than midnight on Thursday, November 10, 2011. I’ll probably be asleep by that time though, so as long as your idea is in my inbox by the morning of the 11th, you’re good to go.
  • So that I can keep your idea email separate from other emails I receive, please type the words Gifts in a Jar in the subject line of your email. You could also type Wow Laura, Your Ponytail is Stunning as the subject line, but be aware that your idea may get lost among all of my other hair related fan mail.
  • Each idea submitted must be accompanied by at least one nice picture. Not a picture of your kids, although I’m sure I’d enjoy that too. I am referring to a picture of your finished gift in a jar. An entire picture tutorial is fine too, but only if necessary.
  • Some of the ideas sent to me will be posted here on my blog, with credit (and blog link if applicable) given to the sender. I won’t be able to post all of the ideas though because knowing how clever you all are, your Gifts in a Jar ideas would probably take over this website, leaving no room for Gratituesday, Crock Pot Recipes or other important posts in which I share about the times birds fly into my face while I’m putting decorations away in the attic.
  • I’d prefer the food gifts and baking mixes to include whole food ingredients – as much as possible. Since these are gifts, I’ll compromise a little on this. But I really shy away from ingredients such as margarine, Crisco and I can’t think of the name of it right now, but it’s that stuff I can’t pronounce. You know what I’m talking about? Yeah, let’s avoid that one.
  • Please include thorough instructions with your idea. For example, if you send me a brownie baking mix in a jar idea, please let me know what exactly is to be included in the jar, the size of the jar needed, as well as clear instructions for the recipient so they know how to actually make the brownies after they take your gift home.
  • Since we all enjoy saving money, I’d appreciate it if the gift ideas you send cost just a few dollars or less. If that’s not an ambiguous amount, I don’t know what is.

Just as soon as I begin to receive your emails, I will begin to compile your wonderful ideas into a Gifts in a Jar eBook, which will be offered FREE to everyone.  This eBook will be ready for release just as soon as I have it finished. If that’s not an ambiguous time frame, I don’t know what is.

Let the creative Gifts in a Jar ideas begin to flow – I’ll be watching for your emails!
