Gifts You Can Include In a Letter To Your Sponsored Child

March 21, 2014 by Laura Leave a Comment

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Just yesterday we received a postcard from Gladis, the little girl we sponsor through One Child Matters. I keep falling in love with her. Her card was so sweet. She’s too little to write herself, and you could tell that she was telling someone what to write.

…I am happy for the present you sent and will take care of it. I like to color and draw and I like books with pictures in them…

What was the present we sent? Last fall, Malachi and I made her a bracelet. We went all out with pinks and purples. I couldn’t help myself.  Malachi was so sweet and loved making this for his “little sister-friend” in Honduras.

One Child Matter Gifts

Writing and sending letters to your sponsored child is such a meaningful way to connect with them. Including little gifts is also a lot of fun and always blessed the child, not to mention, it always gives us such joy to share what we have.

What items are okay to send along with a letter to your sponsored child? One Child Matters does have strict guidelines. Rightly so. They know what ships well and what doesn’t. They don’t want your gifts to become damaged on its way to your child. Here are some great suggestions:

  • Photos of your family
  • Colored or painted pictures your children have created
  • Flat paper items – like bookmarks, stickers, or postcards

The gifts need to fit inside a standard business sized envelope. Always make sure you include your child’s ID number with the enclosure. The bracelet we sent wasn’t flat, but it did fit the other guidelines, so it was okay. Here are items you need to avoid sending:

  • Bulky items and used gifts
  • Seeds, cash, coins, and magnets
  • Crayons, chocolates, and candies (these can melt along the way and ruin your letter)
  • Electronic items and musical greeting cards

When our family was blessed to spend a day at the One Child Matters in Colorado Springs last year, we got to spend several hours sifting through sponsor correspondence. We checked to make sure ID numbers were on enclosed items, and readied them all to be sent overseas. It was so much fun (and a little tear-jerking to me) to see all the sweet love going out from sponsors to their children.

With our newest letter heading out to Gladis, I plan to print off some coloring pages for her – seeing as she likes to color. :)  That should ship well and be fun to receive.

What items have you sent to your sponsored child?

**A NEW UPDATE**
Deal Expired. Thanks!

Oh man, I can not wait to surprise my kids with this DVD! Somebody get the popcorn started.

When I saw this freebie deal in my inbox, I figured it was too good to be true. So I checked it out for myself, and sure enough, it’s legit. And it only took me about ten minutes to complete my order. I orderd the DVD, will get a full refund, plus I’m getting a 64¢ bonus. My kids are going to LOVE this!

frozen

So how can you get Frozen DVD for free?

TopCashBack is a site that gives you money back on online purchases. Typically they offer a small percentage refund. This time, they are offering a $22 refund on your $19.96 + tax purchase!! Here’s what to do:

1. Head to TopCashBack and sign up for an account. (This offer is good for new sign-ups only, and that is my referral link. If you already have a TopCashBack account, email me and I’ll give you more ideas on how to still get this movie for free.)

2. You’ll receive an email immediately after you sign up, and you’ll need to click the link within the email to verify your TopCashBack account. Check your spam folder if the email doesn’t show up right away. That’s where ours ended up. :)

3. Go to this TopCashBack page where you’ll find this free Frozen DVD/Blu-Ray offer.

4. Click through the orange “Get Cashback Now” button. You will be re-directed to Walmart.com. You must shop through that button in order to get your cash back bonus.

5. Find Frozen (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital HD), which is listed at $19.96. Add this item to your cart. It must be this exact video. If you don’t have a Blu-ray player, no problem. You’ll receive a regular DVD in the case too. **If that particular DVD is out of stock at your location, you can instead purchase the regular Frozen DVD priced at $14.96. You will then receive a $17.00 refund!**

6. DO NOT add anything else to your cart. You will not receive the $22 refund if there is anything in this transaction other than the Frozen DVD.

7. Head to check-out. Select “Site to Store” so that you’ll get “free shipping” and so that this offer will be valid.

8. Complete your transaction. With tax, my DVD cost me $21.36.

9. Within a few days, your $22 cashback earnings will show up in your TopCashBack account. You’ll be able to cash out after 30-90 days. The refund will be paid to your paypal account or bank account, whichever you prefer. Or, you can ask them to turn it into Amazon gift cards.

10. Wal-mart will email you when your video is available for pick-up. My confirmation email said it should be available early April. Can’t wait!

If you aren’t interested in this DVD, I think this would be a wonderful way to acquire a nice gift for free! Head to TopCashBack to get started. Enjoy your free movie!

Homeschoolers Always Never

March 19, 2014 by Laura 32 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Homeschoolers are brilliant, hard working, and mature. They always do well on standardized tests. They each play at least one musical instrument, beginning at the age of three. They can each speak at least two languages fluently. They always graduate early and become neurosurgeons at the age of 22. They always come from huge families.

Homeschoolers never get enough social interaction. They never have opportunities to participate in group projects or have class parties. They never eat Doritos.

Homeschoolers Always Never

I always cringe inside and I never feel like conversations like this build anyone up or glorify God. So can we stop with stereotypes and generalities already? Statements about what homeschooled kids always or never do is painful, ignorant, and downright silly. I’m not just talking about what those who “don’t get homeschooling” say. I’ve heard some of these statements from homeschooling families too.

Is it true that public schoolers always get into trouble, do drugs, disrespect their teachers, and slough off during high school? Of course not.  Just like there are all varieties of students in the public school – ranging from scholarly to bully to godly to needy to athletic to healthy to highly intelligent to drama queen – so it is with homeschoolers.

Can I tell you a homeschooling truth? Some students are only “average” (which, for the record, is defined as normal, typical, and common – and therefore nothing to be ashamed of). Some of them struggle to read and write. Some knock the socks off the ACT and other standardized tests, but some do not. Some are musically inclined, while some are completely tone deaf. Some love learning foreign languages and some barely master speaking the English language using complete sentences. (Like, yeah. I know right? Totally.)

Homeschooling does not ensure that kids will grow up to follow the Lord. Public schooling does not turn out robots. Homeschooling does not make kids anti-social. Public schooling does not provide more opportunities. Raising kids, no matter how you choose to do it, takes work, patience, and an immense trust and reliance on God – the One who created all of us uniquely for His glory. I am raising four boys in the same house, feeding them the same food, passing down jeans from one boy to the next, reading them the same books, teaching them the same math, and talking the same talk daily to all of them at the same time. Would you believe that all four of them are all very different in their talents, interests, learning styles, and personalities? I’m fairly certain that none of them have any interest in becoming a French speaking, cello playing, neurosurgeon. Thankfully, I realize that this doesn’t mean I have failed as a homeschool mom. I see their God-given talents shining in other ways.

Homeschoolers, public schoolers, private schoolers, adults, children, men, and women are individuals with unique talents, abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. Each one of us is always never anything less than God created us to be. Let us never make a generalized statement that might belittle that truth.

P.S. I thought it may be of interest to note that last night, our family ate a meal with a group of homeschoolers. We all shared a bag of Doritos.

But Do You Need It?

March 18, 2014 by Laura 9 Comments

Recently, our two youngest boys came to me very excited. Something they wanted was on sale – today only! They had discussed it at length (a solid five minutes, I’m sure) and decided that they would like to pool their money to purchase it. They eagerly asked me if it was okay.

armor_1

See how studious these two are, always sitting still,
focused while carefully writing scripture? Mmmhmmm.

I had mixed feelings. The boring mom in me knew that they definitely didn’t need the item. But the fun mom in me knows it’s okay to spend a little money on fun sometimes. Our boys are all very good savers. They rarely spend their hard earned money or birthday money, and in fact, they rarely even ask to spend it. I knew that since they were asking, and since they’d already discussed how to go in on it together, the purchase was important to them.

So, the non-decisive mom in me said, “Let’s talk to Dad and see what he thinks.” Then the practical mom in me asked a thought provoking question:

If this item wasn’t on sale, would you still want it this badly? Or do you just think you want it because it’s on sale today?

It started a great discussion, which of course ended with the boys asking, “um, so can we buy it?” Clearly, I had been able to make my nine and twelve year old think deeply, and offered them life-lessons that they’ll take with them long into adulthood.

After talking it over with Dad, we came to the decision that since it was such a huge discount, and only totaled $5, their purchase sounded like a fun idea this time. While five dollars doesn’t sound like a big deal, and while it might seem that our dilemma and discussion was silly over such a small amount – we feel that every financial decision needs to be talked through, especially at their ages. Throwing money at this and that is a great way to end up with an empty wallet. We felt it was important to take advantage of that teachable moment.

So how about we adults? What factors into our decisions as we decide what to spend our money on? Do you frequently make impulse purchases, buying something that is on sale whether you need it or not?

We’ve been talking recently about budgeting and the envelope system as we all work together to let Budget Focus get our finances on track. I’d love to hear what helps you process your spending decisions. Also, I’d love to hear from those of you who have taken advantage of the free 14-day trial at Budget Focus. Have you plugged in all your numbers into their simple budgeting and online envelope system? I encourage you all to check out what Budget Focus has to offer. You can try it for free, and their pricing packages are worth paying for as a way to help you get your budget organized and running smoothly.

How do you help your kids make a purchasing decision?

Did You Know Our New “Search By Ingredient” Tool Can Save You Money?

March 18, 2014 by Laura 1 Comment

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

It’s been a few weeks since we installed our Heavenly Homemaker’s Recipe Search By Ingredient Box. Have you used it yet? Has it been helpful to you?

If you haven’t used it yet, you’ll find it over at the top of my right sidebar, just waiting to help you. It looks like this:

search by ingredients

Here’s how it works:  Let’s say you have a lot of eggs in your fridge you want to use up for dinner tonight. You know you have plenty of cheese to go with it. You could just scramble up eggs with cheese (always tasty!), but what other ideas are there? Simply head over to the top of my sidebar, type “eggs, cheese” into the recipe search box – and it will pull up recipes from our site that will hopefully fit your needs.

It’s not fool proof. (Type in “cabbage” and you’ll get my Pudding Pops recipe since I talked about my cabbage patch doll memories in that post!)  But our hope is that this tool will simplify your meal and snack planning, and help you come up with new, fun recipes for your family.

In addition, we feel that the Heavenly Homemaker’s Recipe Search By Ingredient Box will save you money! How? Well, we all have ingredients tucked away in our fridge that might go bad and be wasted if they aren’t used up. If you need fresh inspiration as to what to do with those ingredients, simply type them into the search box and see what comes up! No one wants to waste money by throwing away food!

The search box will also save you money by giving you meal ideas so that you don’t feel like you have to resort to going out to eat or picking up take-out. Seriously, sometimes we just want someone else to do the thinking for us so that we don’t have to figure out what food to prepare! Let the Heavenly Homemaker’s Recipe Search By Ingredient Box do your thinking for you, then have fun putting together one or more of our simple, healthy, and tasty recipes.

Go over to our sidebar and check it out!

P.S. If you type in “butter” you’ll likely get blasted with recipes. Go figure. ;)

Gratituesday: This and That

gratituesday[2]

I couldn’t come up with any one thing to write about today, so I decided to share several things I’m thankful for:

~ A week of down time.

Basketball season ended, spring soccer season hasn’t started yet. I’d go into detail about how lovely it is to have several nights off all in one week, but I’m too busy enjoying the (relatively) empty calendar.

~ Boys who are creative and fun.

I just went to check on the kids, and they are all working together to create music and put together a new video. I love watching them (not argue while they are) having fun together and using their talents.

~ My Amazon Subscribe and Save order came today.

We got to unpack big boxes, then I got to stare at my bulk purchases for a while and get them all organized. It was super fun.

~  Our basketball award night is Tuesday night.

This is always such a wonderfully fun night. We eat together, give awards to the athletes, then play young sibling vs. young sibling, Moms vs. Daughters, and Dads vs. Sons basketball games. I’ve been talking to my muscles, trying to prepare them for doing what they aren’t used to doing. I hope they’re listening.

~ A variety of food

I just love food. I’m so thankful God blessed us with such great variety. I do not take it for granted that we are so privileged to have such bounty.

Now your turn. Share what you’re thankful for!  Leave a comment on this post letting us know how God is working in your life. If you’ve written a blog post about what you’re thankful for, leave the link in the comments so we can visit your blog to read about it. We love sharing and reading about God’s blessings!

Keep Your Hair Healthy! {Plus a Lilla Rose Flexi-Clip Giveaway}

March 16, 2014 by Laura 366 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

A few weeks ago, I sat down in the chair at my hair dresser. Since she always washes my hair before cutting it, she prefers that I don’t wash it before coming in. I pulled my hair out of its Flexi-Clip, shook it out and said, “Here you go. I haven’t washed it since Sunday.” She couldn’t believe it. My hair still had life and bounce, even though I had not shampooed it in four days.

Sundays and Wednesdays. Those are the days I now wash my hair. It’s amazing really. I used to have to wash my hair every day. Then I was able to cut back to every other day. Now the healthier I become, the healthier my hair is. I’m able to only wash it twice a week and be just fine.

I know everyone is different when it comes to how often their hair needs to be washed, so we certainly don’t need to use my head as a standard. :)  But here’s what I’m learning:  Eating healthy food does so much more than just help us to feel better. Our skin and hair can be healthier too, simply because our bodies are being fed great nourishment. Healthy fats, lots of good fruits and vegetables – it all contributes to healthier hair!

I believe washing it less frequently helps maintain its health too. Less blow-drying and curling, less shampoo (even though I use a healthier variety), fewer products with chemicals – it all helps my hair stay healthier. Which leads me to the subject of my Flexi-Clip…

I love that I can pull my hair back in a Flexi-Clip and know that it will not hurt my hair. Rubber bands often break my hair. I’ve had very little breakage since I switched to wearing Flexi-Clips. Plus, they’re pretty. And easy to use. And durable. I’ve been wearing my favorite one for 4 1/2 years!! Talk about getting my money’s worth! Rubberbands get stretched out and become unusable within just a few uses. Flexi-Clips stay good forever.

Paula, our lovely Lilla Rose consultant, is giving a Flexi-Clip to five winners this week! You’ll be able to choose which size will work best for your hair type, and the style will be chosen for you. I’m so excited that not just one, but five of you are going to be blessed with one of these!

Here’s a great video to help you know which size you would need for your hair type:

To enter this giveaway, visit Paula’s Lilla Rose site, then leave a comment here letting us know which item you like best.

For additional entries, like Paula’s page on Facebook, follow Paula on Pinterest (awesome video hairstyling tutorials!), and/or sign up for her personal monthly newsletter. Leave a separate comment here for each entry.

I’ll chose five random winners on Friday, March 21. Be watching for a post stating the winners as you will be responsible for contacting me if your name is chosen!

Green Machine Milkshakes

March 14, 2014 by Laura 12 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Need something fun and green to feed your family on St. Patrick’s Day – but hoping to avoid green food coloring? I’d encourage a tossed salad with spinach and other fresh greens, cucumbers, and zucchini – but I’m guessing your family might not think any of those foods are cute or festive.

Instead, I’m recommending an avocado. Am I the life of the party, or what?

Green Machine Milkshakes

Yum

These milkshakes are smooth, rich, and creamy. So what makes these green? Maybe you weren’t listening. I told you already. It’s avocados. Welcome to my way cool party. (We’ll end the evening by shelling some peas and shredding cabbage for slaw.)  Rock on.

I personally love these green milkshakes. My family can’t decide if they agree with me or not. Is it because they know these have avocado in them, so psychologically, they think they taste weird? I’m not sure. I really can’t tell these milkshakes are made with avocados. To me, they just taste like a smooth and creamy, lightly sweetened milkshake. What my kids don’t drink, I will, so it’s all good. They can just stick with Asa’s awesome guac for their avocado intake.

Green Machine Milkshakes

3 ripe avocados, halved and pitted
3 cups whole milk
4-5 Tablespoons maple syrup
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Serve right away. Makes 5-6 cups.

If this recipe isn’t exciting enough for you, might I suggest roasting some asparagus and steaming an artichoke? I believe it goes without saying that this is going to be the most fun and memorable St. Patty’s Day ever.
