Big Family Grocery Spending for July 2024

Who we’re feeding right now:

  • 6 adults
  • 6 kids
  • 1 toddler who has difficulty eating/chewing/swallowing but is making progress!
  • Frequent guests, almost daily

Here’s the breakdown of where we shopped and how much money we spent on food during the month of July:

1. Walmart

We go through fresh produce soooo quickly that I feel like I run to the store for it every few days. It’s a good problem to have, and I feel like it’s the best use of our grocery money. :) On July 3, I ran in to Walmart to get fresh greens and frozen fruit for smoothies, strawberries, corn on the cob, Caesar salad kits, and watermelon for the 4th, bananas for snacks, shredded lettuce for chicken sandwiches, and frozen hashbrowns for casseroles. I happened upon coconut water that was highly discounted so grabbed a bunch for Eva. And my favorite find of the day: I found a beef roast marked down from $18.73 to just $7.87!

A few months back, Matt had done some work for someone and didn’t intend to charge them. They gave him a Walmart gift card as a thank you so I used it for this day’s shopping. :)

2. Sam’s

Exactly five days later every bit of that fresh produce was gone. We headed to Sam’s to restock plus to get many basics that we find are best to buy in bulk.

We filled the cart with a box of bacon (yes, we had run out!), milk, sliced cheese, smoked sausage, chicken thighs, sour cream, heavy whipping cream, peaches, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, bananas, watermelon, grapes x2, ketchup, applesauce, blackberries, cherries, strawberries, butter, frozen fruit, yogurt, peanut butter, slim jims, barbecue sauce, pickles, and shredded cheese.

Total for groceries at Sam’s: $319.02

3. Walmart

On July 11 I went back to Walmart for…guess what? More fruits and veggies. Plus I got several easy-to-pack foods for picnics and found boneless chicken thighs marked down to just $2.71/pound! Some of these items were covered by our girls’ WIC benefits.

Total at Walmart out of pocket: $76.54

4. Aldi

July 18 our family headed to Aldi with the goal to restock our supply of Fruit/Veggie Pouches for BabyBoy#11 Auggie. I also planned to pick up their Organic Pasta Sauce that we like plus any fruit/veggie/meat sales I happened upon.

I was happy to find these great deals:

  • Strawberries $1.49/pound
  • Grass-Fed Burger Patties $3.99/pound
  • 24 Sliced Cheese packs on clearance for $3.22

We also picked up pork loin, a big watermelon, bananas, 2 Caesar salad kits, canned fruit/fruit cups in 100% juice, 1 pound of organic spring mix, 6 pounds of raw sugar, 3 bags of frozen French fries, blackberries, 3 pounds of mandarins, 2 pounds of baby carrots, sliced salami, 2 pounds of turkey lunch meat, and 4 pounds of ground sausage.

Total for food at Aldi: $137.02

5. Amazon 

Mid-month, I got some good deals on groceries at Amazon: Pizza Crust (just over $1.00 per crust!), Freeze Dried Apples, Annie’s Mac and Cheese (less than $1.00/box!), GoGo Squeeze Applesauce, and GoGo Squeeze Yogurt.

Amazon Food Total: $67.29

6. Costco

We were out of some of our Costco favorites so we headed there July 22 and got sliced turkey and ham, shredded mozzarella, avocado mash, eggs, cream, bananas, milk, chicken thighs, chicken legs, frozen pizza, chicken nuggets, sparkling water, and a few paper products/diapers.

Total for food at Costco $316.53

7. Walmart

That same evening, I ran into Walmart to pick up the last of our WIC items for the kids and found several packages of boneless chicken marked down!

Total out of pocket at Walmart: $44.15

8. Miscellaneous Grocery Runs Not Pictured

Throughout the month, from time to time when Elias is out and about he asks if I need anything. He picks up milk or whatever we need.

9. California Food

The last part of the month, I was blessed with a free trip to California with Kelsey to visit my sisters-in-law. We had fun resting and eating out, which looked like this:

9. McDonald’s

While I was in California, Matt treated the kids to a meal from McDonald’s. They were so excited about this!

NOTE: Without a gift card and WIC, our total would have been closer to $1, 490. :)

Big Family Food and Fun: July 21-27, 2024

Our week started off with a huge wonderful bang! (And wait until you see how the week ended!)

We’d been blessed to help organize a Heartlands Church ministry in which we’d be putting together 75 lunches to deliver to people in our neighborhood on Monday in connection with Atlas. Many families had signed up to help provide the food for this project and on Sunday we invited anyone who was interested to come eat lunch at our house after church then help us put the lunches together.

You guys!! People got so on board with this that FORTY-ONE people were at our house for lunch on Sunday. It was the most amazing thing to see so many say “yes!” to working together to help provide meals for our community!

How did I feed that many? I used my Grandma’s method of “adding more water to the soup.” As in – I made Pulled Pork and just made lots of side dishes to stretch the meal. It was easy, inexpensive, and everyone got full.

Saturday night I put this 6-pound pork butt into a crock pot with barbecue sauce to slow cook all night. Note that I’d gotten this marked down 1/2 price at Aldi so this huge chunk of meat cost only $5.77. What an amazing way to feed a big crowd!

We praise God that He gave us such a large and functional house to be able to easily host so many, so easily. We gathered in the living room, dining room, and kitchen to eat. Kids spilled out into the yard. Babies were passed around so all the grown ups could eat. It was all a picture of God’s beauty.

The lunch buffet was Pulled Pork, Baked Potatoes, Rice, Green Beans, Baked Beans, Rolls, Pickles, Watermelon, and Strawberries.

I had made several batched of Homemade Ice Cream which was a huge hit and so much fun to offer our guests. We gave them the choice of flavors: Peach, Oreo, Butterfinger, or Vanilla. And I’d tried out a dairy free version with coconut milk that turned out pretty good too!

After everyone was fed, we cleared away the lunch mess and set up stations to start putting together 75 sack lunches to give out the next day. We made sandwiches on our kitchen island.

Our dining room table was filled with lunch sacks for people to put in an apple or clementine, a bag of chips, and a treat. In our entry way, we set up a table where people were cutting carrots and cucumbers and bagging them.

With this many people working together, all the food was prepped very quickly. We put all the sandwiches and veggies into our two extra fridges and left the sacks on the table to be completed the next day before serving time.

After our friends left, we warmed up some leftovers to snack on for dinner.

Then I made some hoagie sandwiches to take with us on a walk. The kids had been asking to go to their school playground for an outing so that’s what we did Sunday night.

On the way, we stopped by and knocked on the door of one of Brayden’s friends to see if he could join us. They were so happy to see each other!

The kids played on the playground then we had our sandwiches before heading back to get ready for bed.

Monday morning I scrambled 15 eggs for our breakfast and made several sheets of bacon to eat and to have on hand for sandwiches.

We had a SUPER EARLY Spaghetti lunch so that we could make it to Atlas to had out sack lunches by 11:45.

We got the sandwiches and veggies from the fridge and loaded them into sacks, then piled kids and food into the van to head to Atlas.

Several people from Heartlands church and Atlas were there to give out lunches. Some stayed at Atlas House to give to people as they walked by. Two groups loaded lunches in wagons to walk around the neighborhood and give out sacks.

Brayden and Kiya headed out with a group while the five littlest stayed with Matt and me in our group.

It was wonderful to watch our littles handing out water bottles and sack lunches.

All said and done, there were only ten sacks left after our efforts to get them all handed out. Atlas held on to those to give to anyone who stopped by.

Right after we finished this, it was time to get the little girls to Ms. Kathi’s. So we dropped everyone else at home then I took the girls to have their afternoon fun while I went and had some fun of my own:

There are no words to describe how much I love being a Lolli.

Back at home, I made a simple early dinner of Pancakes with Sausage and Applesauce.

Anna had fallen asleep on the floor so BabyBoy#11 helped wake her up for dinner. :)

Then we loaded everyone up to stock up on food and diapers at Costco.

After Costco we ran to Walmart where I ran in, leaving the kids in the van with Matt and a snack. I found water bottles on clearance for a $1 and lots of marked down chicken!

Tuesday morning we had a very easy breakfast – Yogurt with Granola.

I took BabyBoy#11 to Occupational Therapy to work on his eating abilities. For lunch we made four boxes of Mac and Cheese, sprinkled in frozen peas to cool off our bowls, and added in some chopped ham.

We put the baby down for his nap while the other six and I headed outside to play while Matt got on the roof to do some repair work.

Then Brayden, Kiya, Keith, and I went to hand out food at our weekly Food Distribution. There was a bigger-than-normal crowd that day who got served.

Elias was serving out at church camp all week (along with Malachi and Malorie) so Matt was home on his own with the four littlest. I had made a bowl of Bean and Cheese Salsa Dip for an easy dinner so we pulled that out to eat with Chips, Carrots/Cucumbers, and Watermelon.

We played outside the rest of the evening. I can’t say this very often, but the night was wonderful and calm. Very rarely do all the kids play together peacefully as their trauma often creates struggles even during playtime. But this night, they did. The older kids were happily engaged in a game of make-believe. The younger ones rode bikes and took turns up and down the slide. Matt and I were so thankful for this gift of a peaceful evening.

Just before bedtime, Anna, who was pretending to be a mommy, brought out fruit cups, offering, “Does anyone need a snack before bed?” It was the sweetest.

Wednesday morning I baked a double batch of Bran Muffins and made Strawberry Parfaits for breakfast. As you can see, I also blended up the smoothie Matt and I drink every day.

I caught Acacia in the play room cooking food for everyone also. She called out, “It’s ready!!” as she finished making toast in her skillet. :)

We decided to have a morning at the zoo, so I packed a Salad for a Picnic plus I baked some Chicken Strips to eat with it so that we could have Chicken Caesar Salad.

When we arrived, our first stop was to say hello to the giraffes.

Then we played in the water for a long time until everyone was hungry.

We hurried everyone over to a picnic table so we could feed everyone lunch before hunger meltdowns started. Our Chicken Caesar Salad was a huge hit with everyone. We had the salad with fruit cups, cheese sticks, and a treat I’d snuck into the bag in case I needed salad-eating motivation. No motivation was needed, but they still enjoyed their treat.

Our last stop that day was the Butterfly Pavilion where everyone caught at least one butterfly. Brayden was the king that day with butterflies just begging to be caught by him. One even landed on his back.

I loved that a butterfly landed on Matt and everyone gathered around him in excitement!

For dinner that night, I made five cans worth of Tuna Salad for sandwiches. We put spinach on our sandwiches and that was pretty much our meal.

The kids had been wearing their swimming suits all day since the zoo, which had ultimately been a strategy for getting out the door for the Splash Park on time that night.

This was our third Wednesday for Popsicles in the Park with our church family. So much fun.

That afternoon, I had made a pan of Peanut Butter Honey Rice Krispie Treats for the kids to eat on the way home before bed. As we got everyone buckled in, I handed out bars and water.

I gave Keith a haircut on Thursday morning. Then we decided to turn on the water to wash off the excess hair and to cool all the kids off.

We ate leftovers for lunch then Tortelloni with sauce, cucumbers, and spinach for dinner.

I found this photo of Malachi, Malorie, and Elias all together at Nebraska Youth Camp on their Facebook page. SO MUCH FUN. I love that they have all been there serving together.

Friday morning Kelsey, Little Sweetheart, and I headed out on a plane for California to visit family. Justus and Kelsey had free flight points and they wanted to take me on a trip so that I had a chance to get some much needed rest. It was hard for me to feel like I could leave all the kids behind with Matt. But Justus moved in to help and Elias and Malorie planned to get back Saturday. So off we went!

Family time started out in the Fresno airport with Matt’s dad, Jim, meeting us.

We headed to Matt’s sister, Lori’s. Then to visit his mom, Joyce, and her husband Bill. What a gift all of this was!

The rest of the evening I mostly did this out by Lori’s pool:

Our sister-in-law, Kari, arrived after dinner! The goal for all of us was/is to spend time catching up and resting. We’ve been taking walks, swimming, and sitting with our feet up. Friday, I even took a nap.

I’ll share more next week, but for now, I’m super, super thankful for all the dear ones holding down the fort at home so that I can find refreshment and rest!

Big Family Food and Fun: February 4-10, 2024

My brother and his wife had spent the might so Sunday morning we enjoyed a little bit more time with his family before they headed out to join my niece for church in York. I made bacon and set out fruit, yogurt, Bran Muffins, and Lemon Bread.

If you recall, our church is currently meeting in a temporary location on Sunday afternoons while we wait for flood-related repairs to be done at our building. So we spent the rest of the morning giving all seven kids baths and showers. Plus I took a long bath – woot!

We warmed up leftovers for lunch, then enjoyed a Snacky Dinner after church with some of our older kids and some friends coming over to join us.

Matt turned on some soccer highlights to watch and I captured this happy moment of hoopla in our living room. :) :) :)

Monday morning Eva came over to help and I took Keith to our Food Distribution site to help set up to give out food the next day.

When we got home, I discovered that Eva had cleaned my kitchen and made it so shiny! Bliss!

We warmed up leftover Instant Pot Mac and Cheese for lunch and the kids requested frozen peas to be stirred in. Who am I to argue when the kids want veggies?

That night, Elias and Brayden made dinner as part of their weekly Bro Time. They had purchased the groceries during last week’s time, and this night was a great night for them to put it together for us. Hiring Elias for this special task of pouring into Brayden was such a good decision. It’s making a big difference in Brayden’s life, even more than we’d hoped.

They mixed up Brownies to bake before starting dinner.

Then we all feasted on the meal they made: Pasta with both red and white sauces, Garlic Butter Shrimp, Meatballs, Caesar Salad, and Garlic Toast. We all loved it and Brayden beamed with joy.

That afternoon, since I had the night off from making dinner, I put together a batch of Peanut Butter Honey Puffs for snacks.

While the guys were cooking, Kiya spent time with the loom she’d gotten for Christmas to make her sisters bracelets and necklaces.

Tuesday morning we ate Breakfast Cookies that I pulled out of the freezer. While the kids ate those, I made a batch of Warm Vanilla Soother.

Matt walked Brayden and Kiya to school, then our Speech Pathologist came to work with Acacia. Josie joined this morning too, and she was wearing her life jacket – just in case. ;)

Afterward, we loaded everyone up to do some shopping. Matt dropped two girls and me off at Sam’s then took the other three littles with him into Menards. Divide and conquer, right?

It had been a while since I’d been shopping so I over-filled our cart.

I got lots of fresh produce, sparkling water and 100% juice “pop” for our Super Bowl gathering, shredded cheese, applesauce, chips, chicken nuggets, eggs, milk, chicken thighs, hamburger meat, and a few ingredients and condiments we needed.

That afternoon, I picked up Brayden and Kiya from school and we headed to the Food Distribution to help hand out food. Brayden got to give out Runzas and chicken; Kiya gave out boxed side dish options. Over 100 people come through the line each week, giving us lots of opportunity to smile and show love.

We brought home three bags full of food – lots of bread, buns, and bagels and even a container of strawberries!

Back at home, Elias and Matt warmed up Green Beans that I had made that afternoon and baked this Easy Ham and Hashbrown Casserole that I’d put together over the weekend. In the hubbub of getting home, I almost forgot to take a picture. By the time I remembered, the green beans were gone and people were going back for seconds on the casserole. :)

Matt and Elias went to York on Wednesday to work on our properties and Malachi came over to help me with the kids. For breakfast before sending everyone off to school or work, we had toasted bagels/bread/English muffins, and ate them with sausage and grapes.

To keep the kids busy that morning, I filled a container with dry rice then gave everyone a yogurt container and measuring cups.

Was this messy? Yes. But it was a controlled mess and it kept the kids engaged for several minutes. Malachi and Keith decided to go outside and ride their skateboards together so the girls and I continued to measure and scoop.

I had a lot of help sweeping up the floor afterward.

Once the mess was cleaned up, we spotted the boys through the dining room window with their skateboards.

BabyBoy#11 got up from his morning nap so Malachi came in and took care of him while the girls and I went outside to join Keith. His regular bike is missing (might have been taken??) so he’s making do with his old balance bike for now.

Everyone worked up a big appetite so we came in and ate applesauce pouches and finished off a small bowl of leftover Cream Cheese Salsa Dip with chips.

Dinner that night was simple: Grilled Cheese Sandwiches, Tomato Soup, and Stir Fried Veggies.

After kitchen clean-up, one of the kids brought me a book to read. We opened it up and before I knew it there were six kids piled up on and around me. This was perfection!

Thursday morning was apparently not picture-worthy, ha. I had a treasured phone call with one of my cousins while the kids played and Matt took Keith to get a hair cut before school. Then I took BabyBoy#11 to yet another specialist to see if we could get to the bottom of his eating issues. I’m so thankful for everyone at Nebraska Children’s Hospital, and I’m extra thankful that there is a satellite clinic in Lincoln so that our appointment needs with his specialists are more convenient. I came home overwhelmed with information but also hopeful that we are on the right track to meet his needs.

We got the big kids home from school and played outside again since it was so nice!

That morning, I had put Crock Pot Fajitas in to slow cook all day. I fried some corn tortillas that I had tucked away in the freezer so we ate the Fajita meat more like Tostadas. :)

I cut up a fresh pineapple for dessert. So good!

The most exciting part of Thursday was that I found a few minutes to actually find the bottom of two laundry baskets that night! This is no small thing to celebrate.

Friday mornings are a bit more hectic because Brayden has to be at school an hour early for Ukulele class. So I decided to not cook and instead get out cereal and granola choices that morning.

Here’s what our couch looks like each morning after I make my way to our laundry room and bring up outfits so that we can dress the five littlest.

Everyone was dressed and ready for the day when our friend Courtney arrived for a visit!! She’s one of our dear York College friends we become close to during her time as a student a few years ago. It was so good to catch up with her!

We fed the kids a snacky lunch of crackers, cheese, grapes, cucumbers, and sliced turkey or ham before the preschool bus arrived to pick up Keith and Anna.

Then Acacia, Josie, BabyBoy#11, and I walked around outside our house and enjoyed the sunshine for a while.

I dropped the girls off at Ms. Kathi’s house for their special time with her that afternoon. They started off with a tea party which was so cute that I snapped a photo before I headed out. :)

I took the night off for dinner and got out frozen nuggets and fries.

Besides not cooking, the best thing about a meal like this is that everyone eats it without complaint! After dinner, I got to go out by myself to an Adoptive Moms Support Group that meets once-a-month. My time at these meetings is incredibly valuable and helpful to me. Oh how I need the support and understanding that this group offers.

Saturday morning I made Scrambled Egg Sandwiches with fruit.

Then we loaded up and headed to Sensory Friendly Story Time. (Saying it this way makes it seem like it is actually easy to feed everyone breakfast and load up in the van, hahaha. In reality, it takes a solid hour to get everyone ready to leave after we feed them breakfast. Getting out the door doesn’t always bring out the best in me, oy.)

Today the kids got to enjoy waving scarves along with Valentine-themed books, rhymes, and songs.

I love seeing Keith so engaged. :)

After story time, Librarian Diane gets out lots of tubs full of sensory toys for the kids to enjoy for about 20 minutes. Brayden and Josie weren’t able to play though, seeing as they were buried under all the scarves.

That afternoon we worked on Super Bowl Party food. Kiya had helped me make a double batch of Brownies the day before and we got them frosted.

I baked several pans worth of Bacon like this. I needed cooked bacon so that I could make this dip, plus we’ve found that it’s really nice to have pre-cooked bacon in the fridge to pull out for breakfasts or sandwiches. And yes I had just baked several pans worth of bacon on Sunday, but indeed, it was already gone. What can I say? 13 people live here and six of us are adults. Food comes and goes, then comes again, then goes. :)

I cut several pieces of cooked bacon into a bowl and Kiya stirred ingredients together to make Bacon Ranch Chip Dip for our Super Bowl Party.

I had recently made a big jar full of Ranch Dressing Mix, so it’s possible I went a little bit too Ranchy as I made our party food. I was just trying to use what I had and I didn’t feel like getting out a bunch of different seasonings. So Ranch won when I was working on recipes. Bacon Ranch Chip Dip, Spicy Ranch Dressing (to eat with these Potato Wedges), and regular Ranch Dip to eat with veggies. I didn’t put ranch in the brownies though, so I feel like we’re ok. :)

I was in “use up what we have” mode so dinner that night was a little bit of this and that as I cleaned out the fridge. I had olive oil in a cast iron skillet on my stove from Thursday night’s Tostadas, and I had a small bag of pizza dough that Eva had given me. So I baked the dough in the olive oil in the oven then topped it with leftover marinara sauce from the night Elias and Brayden had made dinner. Then added cheese and we had a skillet pizza!

This was obviously too small to feed our entire clan, but we just pieced it together with whatever fruit everyone wanted plus I asked everyone to eat some fresh spinach on the side. We didn’t sit down to eat dinner together that night, just ate in spurts as I kept working in the kitchen.

Acacia crushed some cornflakes for me and we made another batch of Peanut Butter Honey Puffs. (We go through these faster than we go through bacon.)

I also made a small batch of Peanut Butter Honey Rice Krispie Bars. The Puffs and the Bars are just my way of staying on top of everyone’s hunger when kids (or mom) needs a little bit of protein throughout the day.

Super Bowl Dips in the fridge, snacks made, sink full of dirty dishes, and it was time to get everyone ready for bed to wrap up our week!

What does our Big Family Food and Fun look like as July ends and August begins?

Before we dive into the week, here are a few more photos that Kelsey took during last week’s surprise birthday party. She was intentional about getting pictures with me in them, since I am usually taking the pictures and therefore not in them. :)

Friends kept showing up to surprise me all day long. Amazing!

Big Family Food and Fun: July 30-August 5, 2023

And now for the new week!

Sunday for lunch I tried Pizza Chicken in the crock pot (usually I make it in the oven). It sort of worked??!? I made 8-pounds of chicken thighs at once, so the middle chicken pieces didn’t get thoroughly cooked while we were at church. We ate what was ready and I finished cooking the under-done pieces in a skillet while we ate the rest. We had green beans, corn, bread/butter, and No-Bake Cookies with our Pizza Chicken.

Sunday evening we were invited to swim at our friends’ house and have dinner with them. We had THE BEST TIME!!!!

There were plenty of adults and teens to help with our littles so they got to have fun in the pool too. Then we ate a delicious feast of Sloppy Joes on homemade slider buns, baked beans, grapes, cucumbers, watermelon, salad, pickles, chips, and Peanut Butter Rice Krispie Treats. We felt so spoiled!


Monday morning we enjoyed Pumpkin Bread and Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread – both made by friends who gifted them to us. So good!

We needed to go to the bank to both set up an account and to get some paperwork signed/notarized. So  we figured out a way to do it without taking seven babies into the bank, yikes! I packed grapes, animal crackers, and water or juice for everyone and we headed out.

First we stopped at a park to wear them out a little bit. Then we loaded them back into the van and headed to the bank where I stayed with them and handed out snacks while Matt went in to get our account set up. After wayyyyyy to long (it couldn’t be helped), Matt came out and stayed with the kids while I ran in to do my part. We are thankful that the bank people worked with us and that we could get this necessary business done!

Meanwhile, it was past lunchtime because the bank needs took much longer than we anticipated. So I texted Malachi to throw Chicken Strips into the air fryer so we’d have food right away when we got home. At 12:50, we finally made it back and gave them chicken and canned fruit while I warmed up peas to complete the meal. Naptime didn’t happen until almost 2:00 that day but we sure were thankful to finally have our bank account set up and paperwork taken care of!

Dinner that night was Breakfast – pancakes, scrambled cheese eggs, sausage, bacon, blueberries, and applesauce. This is one of our favorite meals! And having a griddle on my stove is INCREDIBLE. I cranked out a huge amount of pancakes in a very short amount of time. Amazing!

The weather was beautiful that evening so we took another walk to the Sunken Gardens before bedtime.

We finished the Chocolate Chip Zucchini Bread on Tuesday morning, plus I got out our apple-peeler-corer-slicer and made apple spirals for the kids. (This is actually faster than slicing them and the kids love it!) They ate the apples with our favorite “caramel cheese” so breakfast seemed like a real treat!

Matt kept all the kids occupied outside of the kitchen after breakfast because after eating chocolate bread – I desperately needed to sweep and mop. Then we packed a lunch and headed to the zoo for our morning outing. I used the rest of our leftover smoked chicken from last week to make Chicken-Ranch-Spinach Melts.

We weren’t sure how this would work since these are hot sandwiches. But I packed our cold side dishes and drinks in one cooler with ice. Then I packed the hot sandwiches in a separate insulated lunch bag. I toasted the sandwiches in our air fryer at 10:30 and at noon when we ate at the park, the sandwiches were still hot. Amazing! Now we know!

Each time we go to the zoo (we have a membership and we live six blocks away so we can go as often as we are able), we choose something different to “feature” for the kids so that every trip is special. This time it was the Dino Dig. We chose a table by the digging area so that the kids could play and then eat when they were ready. The hot sandwiches were a hit, plus we had applesauce, chips and salsa, and juice.

We headed home and put littles down for a nap then I headed to Costco. I underestimated how long my shopping would take – and how many carts I would fill. Phew. Every time I’m buying food or clothes I’m struck by the reality of how many kids I have. You’d think I’d be used to it by now, haha.

I needed many basics, plus I was getting items for our kids’ lunchboxes for first couple of weeks back to school. Plus I needed diapers, and the yogurt was on sale, and….

I was an hour later than planned getting home. Matt had fed the kids leftovers for dinner but it didn’t matter. They were screaming and extra needy anyway. We somehow unloaded all the groceries while holding very loud children.

All said and done, I spent $653 for Costco groceries and we are well stocked up, at least for a few days before we run out of fresh produce again. :)

Wednesday morning Matt and and Elias headed to York to work on our houses there. Malachi was my side-kick all day, helping me with littles. I had an at-home 9:00 meeting for our littlest kids. Then at 10:30 we decided that a fun morning outing would be McDonald’s Play Place. Malachi’s app told us that we could buy nuggets for a good deal so I told the kids that everyone would have a fun snack of 2 chicken nuggets each and that we’d play and come home and bake pizzas.

Good idea, Mom.

Except – do McDonald’s Play Places not exist anymore??? It’s a been a long time since I’ve looked for one. My phone told me there was a Play Place so we drove to that location. But in fact, there was no Play Place. Moving on to Plan B…

Malachi still grabbed nuggets, we handed everyone their tiny 2-nugget snack to eat in their car seats, and we headed to the Scheels to enjoy their Play Place. Phew.

Oh but did I mention that our wagon broke while we were in there?! Good grief.

The kids had a great time playing, Malachi grabbed himself some frisbee golf discs, and we headed home – much later than intended. Too late to bake pizzas before having screaming children who had become hangry.

Soooo, when we got home I told the kids to wash hands, get a drink of water, and meet me at the table for fun sliced apples. We scooped out peanut butter for them to eat with their apples, I found leftover pancakes to warm up with butter, and that was lunch. THEN IT WAS NAPTIME, thank you Jesus.

Oh wait. It was not naptime. I had missed the fact that the three little girls had been taking turns smearing their peanut butter in each others’ hair. Oh no they hadn’t. Oh yes they had. I took them to the sink at stuck their head under the water to clean their hair the best I could. And then it was naptime. Wet hair and all.

That afternoon I experienced something new…

Grocery Delivery

After yesterday’s crazy Costco shopping trip I decided to see how I could make grocery shopping easier to meet our family’s needs. So I put in an Aldi order and took advantage of a Free Delivery deal.

Having my groceries delivered to my door? AWESOME. But will I do it again? I’m not sure. Probably not??

While shopping, I noticed that Aldi’s online prices were all higher than in-store prices. This is the case for both pick-up and delivery. With the high volume of items I need to buy, it will not be worth it to pay the extra amount per every item. Anyone have experience with Aldi pick-up or delivery? Any tips for how to save? Or should I skip it and just shop in the store somehow each week?

Is it still only Wednesday?

Thank goodness for afternoon rest times. I enjoyed some down-time (sitting with my feet up  and uploading pictures of all of our food, hehe) then got ready for company. I was so excited about this because friends from York were coming for dinner. Kelsey happened to be free to join us and I’m not sure if you know this, but she is a professional watermelon-cutter-upper. That’s always her job when she comes. ;)

There were 22 of us for dinner that night and it was magical. We smoked two different kinds of brats and ate them with salad, watermelon, grapes, oranges, carrots, chips, No-Bake Cookies, and Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars. (<— awww, I wrote this when Asa was only 15.) We enjoyed our visit so much!!

I was visiting with our guests, the bigger littles were playing outside with their kids and our neighbors, and it was getting close to bedtime. Kelsey grabbed the three little girls and gave them a bath to get the rest of the peanut butter out of their hair. Bless. Then Kelsey, along with guests Julie and Emma put them girls down for the night. This was such a precious scene as they said goodnight and headed to bed…

Thursday was my big birthday. :) Just like the day before, I had meetings all morning for our little ones (The Early Childhood Development team is highly involved with our kids ages 0-3 because they are all at high risk and need early intervention. We met with them frequently in York and now we are getting set up with our new team in Lincoln. Lots of meetings later, we are almost ready to roll!)

While I was in our living room filling out paperwork and answering questions, Matt and the kids made a picnic lunch for us. They made Chicken Salad and put it on croissants for sandwiches, plus packed applesauce and chips. I had splurged on Kirkland’s Organic Chocolate Milk for a special treat for picnics but none of the kids enjoyed them very much. A bummer, but now I know not to buy them again. :)

After we ate, the kids ran around the park and attempted to climb a tree.

After naps, they put together a special show for me for my birthday, hahaha.

Elias cooked and perfectly seasoned the shaved beef steak I had gotten in our Aldi delivery, then everyone else worked together to put together a buffet for Steak Nachos for my birthday dinner. All the Bigs were able to join so all 15 of us were together – just what I wanted for my birthday!

My nacho bowl was so delicious!! Cilantro, white queso, seasoned steak, corn, black beans, garden tomatoes, and chips. It was a perfect birthday meal.

Ah, but then there was cheesecake!!

After we ate, we headed outside to hang out.

Kelsey taught me how to play Cornhole. Super fun!

It was a great birthday!

Friday morning we ate cereal and bananas, then headed to a bookstore that was featuring a Reptile Storytime.

We ended up being there with several families from church which was a fun surprise! Most of our kids were brave enough to pet the snakes. :)

Since we were already out and about, we found a park that we hadn’t tried out yet and ate the rest of the Chicken Salad on croissants and No Bake Cookies with juice and clementines. But oooops. This park didn’t have bathrooms, which is a no-go with this many kids! We cut our picnic short and came home so that we could make a mess of food all over our kitchen floor. I mean, so that some of the kids could potty while we finished lunch in our kitchen. :)

For dinner that night I decided that I wanted NO DIRTY DISHES (or drama), so I threw a bunch of chicken nuggets into the air fryer and made these smoothies. Disposable plastic cups with fun straws for the win!

Malachi had made himself a pizza for lunch and the cardboard circle was still on the counter. So that became my fancy serving tray for the nuggets. Nice, eh? The kids ate outside while playing because the weather was wonderful.

Meanwhile, Justus had been coming back and forth all day working with our smoker to made his delicious ribs for some buddies that night. Brayden was his side-kick, which is good beyond what I can express. Our little kids need our bigger kids pouring into them like this. Thank you, God, for moving us to Lincoln so that we could be together in these ways. We all need this.

Acacia gave up on her straw and went all in, drinking her smoothie like a big girl.

Plan B again

If we’ve learned anything we’ve learned that we can make plans, but they almost always need to change.

Saturday morning we had plans to go to Walmart to get a few school supplies and some of our WIC items for the month, especially formula for BabyBoy#11. But, the roofers we’d been waiting on for over a month to come do repairs FINALLY came that morning. So Matt needed to spend time with them, pushing back our plans.

By 11am we were finally able to get out the door, and we decided we needed to work our plans out differently. I put together a snack of animal crackers, applesauce pouches, and cheese sticks and we made our way to the store. All the kids stayed in the the van with Matt and he handed out snacks while I ran into Walmart and hurried as fast as I could to get everything we needed. It wasn’t a very fun outing for the kids, but at least the necessary shopping got done.

I forgot to take any pictures, sorry! I got formula, cereal, juice, cheese, yogurt, frozen hashbrowns, spring mix, spinach, grapes, pears, bananas, strawberries, plus a few packs of glue sticks, crayons, and pencils. Matt and the kids were hanging in there in the van, bless. We unloaded groceries as fast as we could when we got home then quickly warmed up leftover brats and served them with watermelon before naptime.

We made fresh green beans from our friends’ garden that night plus corn on the cob. I put a bunch of Burritos from our freezer into the air fryer to heat up while the veggies cooked and that was dinner. (By the way, make these burritos to have on hand for nights you don’t feel like or have time for cooking. They are so great!)

This was my view of dinner from the corner of the room where I sat feeding BabyBoy#11.

We just have one more week before school starts. We are both excited and sad that summer break ends and a school year begins. When do your kids start their school year again?

Big Family Food: Ways I Can Cut Our Grocery Budget

We eat big around here. Are there even ways I can actually cut our grocery budget?

This is what I’ve been exploring lately. What are some ways I can cut our grocery budget without causing more work or frustration?

I was so positively challenged by Reanna’s comment on this post:

If you are considering ways to save on your grocery budget you might consider buying more in “ bulk” and less single serving items. I’ve never bought individual applesauces, or other single serving items. I also only buy simple snacks such as fruit or crackers. We mainly concentrate on eating more during mealtime and not snacking as much. Snacks can be very expensive!

I 100% agree with her idea to avoid single-serve items, and I used to shop and serve food in just the ways she described. But with caring for so many little ones all while trying to keep up with our big kids (we’re planning another wedding, eeee!) – I have resorted to all kinds of convenience food items just to survive. (Our three littlest babies are each about 9-months apart in age, our three-year-old is potty training, and three days every week we enjoy our former foster babe, another three-year-old oy!)

My first thought when I read the comment was, “Yes, but not right now. Maybe after we get through this season.” But then I let her ideas simmer a while and I started to think about ways I could make some money-saving changes.

What I need to consider before I decide to cut our grocery budget:

  • Is the money-saving change worth the time and energy it will take to make up for the convenience?
  • Will it be worth the messes it might make? (We are already drowning in baby-made messes around here.)
  • Is the cost savings enough to make a substantial difference? (As in, will I spend $6.50 instead of $7.00 but create a significant amount of additional work for myself? If so, saving $0.50 will not likely feel worth it.)
  • Will any changes I make mean that we are eating less nourishing foods overall?

A word about snacks:

Well, three words about snacks: We eat them. A lot of them. Not all of us though – here’s how it works at our house!

Our three-year-olds, two-year-old, and one-year-old kids eat several snacks throughout the day. I would have some incredibly grumpy babies if I didn’t give them a mid-morning muffin (or something similar) and some berries. Sometimes I actually feel like all I’m doing is figuring out yet another good snack I can offer to truly hungry little ones.

I give them substantial meals, of course, but their little tummies can only handle so much at a time. We go through grapes, berries, apple slices, granola, cereal, and muffins like crazy – all eaten between meals.

Now, on the other hand, I almost never give our 6-year-old and 8-year-old snacks between meals. They are expected to eat their fill during meal time and I’ve found that if they eat a snack, they don’t eat a good meal later (which makes them need a snack later, which makes me want to cry later, truth). So the snacking is limited to the kids under 3 – and also to the hungry mom who rarely has time to sit and eat a full meal, thank you for understanding.

Ways I Can Cut Our Grocery Budget

I feel a little bit silly that I haven’t actually looked at cutting such obvious grocery spending options for so long. On the other hand, this mama is tired, has a lot of meetings, and hasn’t had quite enough sleep for approximately 1,460 nights in a row. So that’s why I’m so grateful that Reanna suggested that I consider a different way to shop and serve food.

I discovered peach cups and pear cups and applesauce squeezies a couple of years ago, loved how handy they were, and never looked back. And with that, I never really looked again at the price comparison either. Until I was challenged to consider the necessity of extra spending.

Pear cups cost $0.13/ounce. But a can of pears costs $06.7/ounce – half the cost of the convenient cups. Peaches? Same story. Half the price to buy a can instead of the little cups.

When we hit the road or need to pack food to eat at a soccer game or at the park, the cups will be wonderful and helpful with so many kids. But at home? I can easily open a can and dole out the peaches or pears in little bowls.

IT’S SO OBVIOUS. But I’ve been tired. So.

Meanwhile, the applesauce.

For the past three years, I have been buying cases and cases of applesauce squeezies. These gems are so helpful I can’t put it into words. And what happens when I give my littlest kids a bowl of applesauce? You don’t want to know, but I’ll tell you anyway. They paint with it. On their shirts, hair, feet, and under the table. I learned the hard way not to give them a bowl of applesauce, and there are too many of them eating (read: painting) at once to help them all eat it in a clean way.

Squeezies though? I can hand them out, and actually leave the room to go potty by myself. This is a miracle and though shalt not take my applesauce squeezies from mine house.

But do I need them forever and always? As it turns out, my 6 and 8-year olds are quite handy with a spoon. I can easily serve them applesauce in a bowl and save money on an entire case of applesauce squeezies every week. How about that? A jar of applesauce is $0.5/ounce while the squeezies are $0.15/ounce or more. Triple the savings! And if I’d ever get back to canning applesauce again, well, that’ll save even more.

What else can I cut or change?

I already buy almost everything in bulk. At Costco, at Sam’s, and through Azure Standard. And when I consider all the needs of our day, plus my lack of time to make more of our food from scratch, I’ve had a difficult time knowing what else I can cut.

But one thing I’ve committed to, besides buying fewer individually packaged fruit options, is to buy fewer individually wrapped items in general.

The only time I truly need individually wrapped snacks is when we go to tennis matches, soccer games, or other trips and outings. My goal right now is to keep items like this on hand but to save them for outings instead of resorting to handing them out at home during snack time.

What I don’t plan to change now (or ever?)

As I’ve shopped lately and done some price comparisons, here are some foods I’ve decided to continue to buy for the sake of convenience, even though they are a little more pricey.

  • Diced Ham – For $0.24/ounce, I can buy a package of ham that’s all cut and ready to dump into an egg casserole or this soup. A whole ham costs about $0.14/ounce. But I have to cook it and cut it (which is fine when I make a whole ham for a meal and use the leftovers in soup and such). Having the diced ham in my freezer ready to help me put a meal together in 5-minutes is worth the extra cost by far!
  • Frozen Shredded Hashbrowns – I buy 4-pound bags of Mr. Dell’s hashbrowns for $0.7/ounce. I can buy a bag of yellow potatoes for $0.4/ounce. Dude, gimme both. :) Those frozen hashbrowns save me so much time and make meal prep so very easy! They are delicious and the Mr. Dell’s brand includes only potatoes. So I feel great about using them for many of our meals. And whole potatoes? We use those too, and they are also an inexpensive convenience food in my book. But only when I make them like this or this.
  • Pre-Made Pizza Crust – I keep these in the freezer at all times. Do I know how to make pizza crust? Yes. Is it hard? No. But right now it’s fantastic to go to the freezer and grab crusts already made for me. I then grab a couple of cans of pizza sauce, shredded cheese, and whatever other toppings I have on hand. We quickly make pizza and it’s super easy. It’s also a lot cheaper than ordering pizza.”
  • Shredded Cheese – Talking about the shredded cheese for pizzas reminded me of the beauty of the gift of bags of pre-shredded cheese. I used to buy huge blocks of cheese and my kids would shred it in our food processor. Gone are the days. My bigs are either gone or don’t have time, and I have decided not to give my babies a cheese grater. Smart, eh?Grating cheese would never happen if I had to wait until I had time for the task. So bagged shredded cheese it is! Are there ingredients added to the bag to keep the cheese from clumping together? La-la-la! I can’t hear you, I don’t know what you’re talking about… :)

Well, I’m quite sure that as I consider ways I can save, I’ll be able to add to this list. Any other ideas you all want to throw out there?!
