Homemade Peppermint Patties

Yum

This post is all Amy’s fault. ;)  She linked to a recipe for peppermint patties last week and made me very hungry for them. I figured you wouldn’t mind me testing and adapting the recipe, then sharing it with you. These would be perfect holiday treats to make and share with co-workers or neighbors, or to wrap up to take to a gift exchange.

This recipe actually calls for leftover mashed potatoes – how fun is that? Since I had a pound or four of mashed potatoes left over after Thanksgiving, I decided I could spare the 1/2 cup needed to make this recipe.

But before we go any further, I need to let you know that this recipe is a little different from those that I usually share. There is not much about this recipe that is healthy. These peppermint patties consist mostly of sugar. Do not make this recipe and serve it to your family for breakfast. Do not assume that since there are mashed potatoes in these, they can be considered a vegetable to be served as a side dish to your pot roast. Do not sit down and eat this whole batch by yourself. Do not make this recipe very often, for these patties are addicting. I will not be held responsible for you getting sick off of homemade peppermint patties. In fact, I hereby relinquish any responsibility for influencing you to make these. Just because a recipe is posted here does not mean you have to make it. Nobody here is forcing you to get out your mixing bowl. Actually, you really shouldn’t make these at all. No. You should just read through this post, then nod and smile. Then you should promptly move on to read about something less sugary, like this Angel Ornament post.

Yes, whatever you do, do not make these peppermint patties.

Peppermint Patties 2

Homemade Peppermint Patties (adapted from Domesticated)

1/2 cup leftover mashed potatoes
1 Tablespoon melted butter
2 teaspoons peppermint extract
5 cups powdered sugar (told you there was a lot of sugar)
1 cup chocolate chips
1 Tablespoon coconut oil or palm shortening

Stir together the mashed potatoes, butter, peppermint oil and powdered sugar to form a thick dough. Spoon a teaspoon at a time onto a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. (I was able to form 38 teaspoon sized patties from this dough.)

Press down the dough and shape as small patties. Refrigerate for 3 hours, or freeze for 45 minutes.

On the stove top, melt together the chocolate chips and oil. Dip the chilled patties into the chocolate to cover them. Chill until set. Admire the peppermint patties, but do not eat them. Do not even lick your fingers.

Good luck with that. ;)

Announcing: Gifts in a Jar! {A Group Effort}

October 26, 2011 by Laura 26 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

I’m not sure if I’ve ever mentioned this here or not, but I really, really love  jars. Oh, I’m sorry, it seems that I have spoken of my jar obsession one or forty-eight times.

Doesn’t it just make sense then that we put together some posts and even an eBook featuring Gifts in a Jar? Yes, it really does make perfect sense. We’ve decided, since you are all full of so many wonderful ideas, to make this a group project. Come closer my friends – let me share the details.

During the next two weeks, I’ll be compiling any and all (okay, not necessarily all – see the rules below) of your Gifts in a Jar ideas. (I will give you full credit in the eBook for your idea.)  While gifts of food and baking mixes are perfect for this project, I’d also love to see your ideas go beyond food. Do you have ideas for natural bath and body or household products? Know any fun ways to decorate jars or use jars for home decor? Oooh, and does anybody have a great tutorial on making liquid soap dispensers out of jars? I’ve seen those before and they are SO cool!!!

The possiblilites are endless for gifts we can put together in jars. With Christmas coming up, the timing couldn’t be better. (Although, I’d love for this eBook to be full of ideas that can be used any time of the year – not just Christmas.)

You may recall a post in which I shared Teresa’s Gift Certificate in a Jar idea. This, of course, will be featured in the eBook.

Here are the rules and guidelines for Gifts in a Jar submissions:

  • You may email me up to three ideas. One idea is fine though, or yes, even two.
  • Email your ideas to laura @ heavenlyhomemakers dot com no earlier than yesterday and no later than midnight on Thursday, November 10, 2011. I’ll probably be asleep by that time though, so as long as your idea is in my inbox by the morning of the 11th, you’re good to go.
  • So that I can keep your idea email separate from other emails I receive, please type the words Gifts in a Jar in the subject line of your email. You could also type Wow Laura, Your Ponytail is Stunning as the subject line, but be aware that your idea may get lost among all of my other hair related fan mail.
  • Each idea submitted must be accompanied by at least one nice picture. Not a picture of your kids, although I’m sure I’d enjoy that too. I am referring to a picture of your finished gift in a jar. An entire picture tutorial is fine too, but only if necessary.
  • Some of the ideas sent to me will be posted here on my blog, with credit (and blog link if applicable) given to the sender. I won’t be able to post all of the ideas though because knowing how clever you all are, your Gifts in a Jar ideas would probably take over this website, leaving no room for Gratituesday, Crock Pot Recipes or other important posts in which I share about the times birds fly into my face while I’m putting decorations away in the attic.
  • I’d prefer the food gifts and baking mixes to include whole food ingredients – as much as possible. Since these are gifts, I’ll compromise a little on this. But I really shy away from ingredients such as margarine, Crisco and I can’t think of the name of it right now, but it’s that stuff I can’t pronounce. You know what I’m talking about? Yeah, let’s avoid that one.
  • Please include thorough instructions with your idea. For example, if you send me a brownie baking mix in a jar idea, please let me know what exactly is to be included in the jar, the size of the jar needed, as well as clear instructions for the recipient so they know how to actually make the brownies after they take your gift home.
  • Since we all enjoy saving money, I’d appreciate it if the gift ideas you send cost just a few dollars or less. If that’s not an ambiguous amount, I don’t know what is.

Just as soon as I begin to receive your emails, I will begin to compile your wonderful ideas into a Gifts in a Jar eBook, which will be offered FREE to everyone.  This eBook will be ready for release just as soon as I have it finished. If that’s not an ambiguous time frame, I don’t know what is.

Let the creative Gifts in a Jar ideas begin to flow – I’ll be watching for your emails!

Simple Ways To Earn a Little Extra Cash for Christmas (while sitting at your computer)

October 8, 2011 by Laura 11 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Hello, and welcome to a post that might be just about as annoying as your local department store. Summer is barely over and I’m already starting to talk about Christmas. Hey, at least I haven’t put up a tree yet. (Although, that would be an efficient thing to do in October, wouldn’t it?)  kidding

I think we can all agree that Christmas is not really about presents and hooplah. And yet, I would guess that most of us probably do at least a little bit gift giving around the holidays. Here are some simple ways to gain yourself a little extra cash for the upcoming Christmas season. Don’t worry – you don’t have to start singing Jingle Bells yet. Just start planning ahead a little bit now so that Christmas won’t be a financial burden. Christmas should never be a financial burden. Christmas should be a season of joy. Don’t make me get on my soap box.

1. InboxDollars

I’ve mentioned InboxDollars recently in a giveaway they sponsored. You won’t get rich off of InboxDollars (or any of the ideas shared in this post), but you will be able to earn a little extra cash while in the comfort of your pajamas and slippers. (I recommend opening up a separate, free email account to use specifically for InboxDollars – it makes this much easier!)

2. Swagbucks

It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned Swagbucks around here, but if you aren’t using Swagbucks to earn extra money from home, you really should be! There are many, many ways to earn Swagbucks, but my favorite is to simply use the Swagbucks search feature. Each time I need to search for something online (which is quite often), I use my Swagbucks search engine. Several times a day, I earn some swagbucks – all for doing something I would have done anyway. Once I’ve accumulated enough, I turn my Swagbucks into Amazon Gift Cards. (There are many other options for ways to redeem your Swagbucks – Amazon cards are just my favorite.)  One year, I saved all my Amazon Cards throughout the year and we had a practically free Christmas. It was awesome!

Plus, when you refer others to Swagbucks, you can earn extra Swagbucks! So, get yourself signed up, then tell your friends about this feature. You’ll both earn! (See, I’m referring you, so that means I’ll earn Swagbucks based off of my referral to you. Thanks!)  :)

I’ve written more about Swagbucks here if you’d like more information.

3. Shop it to Me

This may be one of the simplest ways to earn a little extra cash – although, like Swagbucks, it comes in the way of gift cards instead of actual cash. I like gift cards just fine. Gift cards buy gifts – what more could we ask for? Or, you could give the gift card away as a gift. Perfect!

How this works:  Sign up to receive Shop It To Me newsletters. These newsletters are painless – I receive them twice a week and either look through them if I feel like the deals they share are relevant, or delete them if they’re not.

I used my personal referral link above. For every ten of you who sign up, I receive a $10 gift card of my choice. (Thank you, by the way!)  Once you’ve signed up, you can then refer your friends and family through facebook, email, blog or tweet – and for every ten people you refer, you receive $10 gift cards too! It’s free, it’s easy, there’s no catch, and you can earn gift cards for Starbucks, Whole Foods (my personal fav!), Gap, Macy’s and many others – whichever you choose.

4. Become a Heavenly Homemakers Affiliate

It’s been a while since I’ve mentioned this feature we have here at Heavenly Homemakers. Did you know you can earn money by referring sales in our Shop? We offer 33% affiliate earnings on all of our downloadable products – that means that not only can you earn a few dollars when someone you refer purchases our ebooks, you can earn a whoppin’ $14.85 each time someone you refer purchases our Learn Your Letters, Learn to Serve curriculum kit! Your earnings can really add up! Read more details here – we’d love to have you on board as an affiliate.

Have you started thinking about Christmas yet – or is it just me?

(Disclosure:  I think it was obvious that many of the links I used in this post are my referral links, but just in case, I thought I’d tell you again. Each of these opportunites are painless and easy and a great way to earn a little extra cash – and sharing them with you will help me earn a little extra cash for Christmas too. Then you can turn around and do the same! But don’t feel obligated to sign up for any of these if you don’t want to. We’ll still be friends either way.) ;)

Gratituesday: Tidings of Joy…Somewhere

December 20, 2010 by Laura 131 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

(Oh look, this post has the Christmas Brunch invitation!
That means that any comments left on this post will be included
in the drawing for our Christmas Brunch Presents!)

We’ll pause just a moment in the midst of our Christmas Brunch to offer a little bit of holiday encouragement. Can I get anyone a cup of hot cocoa while we visit?
—————————————————————-

Silent night…Holy night…All is calm…wait, really? Where? When? All I’ve witnessed lately is loud evenings that are anything but calm. There are holiday parties to attend, Christmas programs to prepare for, presents to buy, presents to wrap, presents to send, goodies to bake, cookies to decorate, and somewhere in there I’m also supposed to keep up with my laundry.

There are Christmas songs playing all around us everywhere we go. I’m pretty sure they’re supposed to be offering us tidings of comfort and joy, but sometimes I believe that the joy gets lost somewhere in between trying to figure out what to buy for Great Uncle Gilbert and looking frantically for my son’s left black dress shoe for his music recital. Incidentally, Uncle Gilbert already has everything he needs plus everything he doesn’t need, including Big Mouth Billy Bass the Motion Activated Singing Sensation. And by the way, why must I always have to be the one to draw Uncle Gilbert’s name in our family gift exchange?

My husband had a sad little chuckle one day as he stood in a long line waiting to return an item at the store. Many of the other shoppers in line looked weary and haggard, some of them were grumbling about the length of the line and the time it was taking to be helped and in general, no one seemed happy. The music heard through the speakers was what caused my husband to pause as, “It’s the most…wonderful time…of the year!” was being sung out cheerfully in the background. Wow, if this is what we tend to look like during the “most wonderful time of the year” I’d hate to see us all during the most terrible time of the year (which is what, say…flu season?).

I’m not sure it matters how much we plan ahead and try to stay organized during the holidays. This is just a busy time and there’s not much any of us can do about it.

This is the part of the article where I’m supposed to smile and kindly say, “So let’s all just take a moment to meditate on the birth of our Savior and the reason we celebrate Christmas.” I’m not going to say that though. If I did, I’d be afraid you’d give me a justifiable bonk on the head with a roll of wrapping paper. Don’t tell me to remember the reason for the season! I’m TRYING to remember…I just can’t find the black dress shoe! WHERE is the black dress shoe?!

While we all look for the perfect gifts (and the long lost black dress shoe), I pray that we also find those tidings of comfort and joy that have been offered. I hear they’re great this time of year.

P.S. I don’t really have a Great Uncle Gilbert but if I did, I would never complain about having to buy him a gift. I think.

What are you thankful for this Gratituesday? Write about it on your blog, then come link up with us here. If you don’t have a blog, be sure to leave a comment letting us know what you’re grateful for!

If you are linking up a blog post for Gratituesday,
please copy and paste the following sentence into your post! Thanks!

Gifts for Men

December 14, 2010 by Laura 38 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

I’m terrible at figuring out gifts for men, so why I ever said I would post this is beyond me. I am really hoping all of you will leave brilliant comments of gift ideas for men. Because you all have brilliant ideas, right? Oh good, I knew I could count on you.

  • Games

Most men love strategy games. I mentioned a few in my Gifts of Games post like Risk, Settlers of Catan and Manhattan. If you’re looking for a game you can play with your strategy game lovin’ guy, I really think you’ll both like Manhattan. I like it a lot, even more than Settlers of Catan, which I like quite a bit too. Another fun strategy game is what we affectionately call “the bean game”. It’s really called Bohnanza, but you “plant beans” and “trade beans” and it’s quite fun. It’s just cards and it’s not complicated (but it is strategic) and it’s inexpensive. I love uncomplicated games. I know we’re talking about what MEN like, but hey, if you’re wanting to get him a game you’ll like too, Manhattan and Bohnanza score high on my list.

  • Books

Books are great if the man on your list is a reading kind of guy. My husband is usually reading three or four books at once. His latest favorite is 48 Days to the Work You Love by Dan Miller. Together, we’ve been reading Saving Your Marriage Before it Startsby Les and Leslie Parrott. Our marriage started 16 years ago, but we are still enjoying this book. We’ve heard great recommendations for UnCommon:  Finding Your Path to Significance, by Tony Dungy.

  • Clothes

Men usually don’t buy their own clothes, so this is what I usually resort to buying when I can’t think of anything else. Original, I know.

  • Music

Hopefully you know the kind of music the man you’re purchasing for likes. If not, iTunes Gift Cards are great!

  • Coupons

You’re only limited to your imagination on this one. You can give a “Pie of the Month” coupon book, a “Romantic Dinner” coupon book, a “Favorite Meals” coupon book, “Favorite Desserts” coupon book…whatever the man you’re giving the coupon book to would enjoy.

  • Tools

If you’re really lucky, he’ll want/need a tool that actually fits under the tree and costs less than your wedding ring. Unfortunately, he probably already has a hammer.

  • Camping Gear, Sports Gear, Hunting Gear, Fishing Gear

Or whatever gear he’s into. And doesn’t already have.

And that, my friends, is about all my brain could come up with. What are your ideas for gifts for men? Anything. Anything at all. Bring on the ideas!

Stocking Stuffers for Kids

December 11, 2010 by Laura 51 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

I think I love stuffing stockings almost more than any other gift giving at Christmas time!! My mom made our family’s stockings and they are just beautiful! But they’re a little bit small. It seemed that no matter how small I kept the stocking stuffers, half of them still wouldn’t fit through the top! I finally bought the boys new, bigger stockings. My mom’s stockings are still hanging for decoration and will always be among our favorite Christmas decor. You can read more about her hand made stockings here.

christmasdecor0915smI have learned during my last 13 stocking stuffing years that filling stockings with junk is a waste of money and toy box space. There are all kinds of little things on the ends of store aisles that are touted as “Great Stocking Stuffers”, but they’re made of junk. The kids will play with them for a total of two minutes before they get lost under the couch cushions.

I now avoid junkie toys and go with items that are truly usable, educational, or consumable.

This year (don’t tell my kids), they’re getting quite a few consumable items. I got them some treats that we hardly ever buy, which means they’ll be thrilled to find them in their stockings! Here are some consumables they’re either getting this year or have been given in years past:

  • Annie’s Mac and Cheese box
  • Juicy Juice 100% juice
  • Pack of Gum
  • A Can of Black Olives
  • A Favorite Candy
  • Cereal Bars
  • A Small Jar of their Favorite Jelly
  • Sunflower Seeds
  • Beef Jerky
  • Fruit
  • Fruit Leather

I love consumable stocking stuffers because well…they will be quickly consumed. They won’t get lost in a toy box never to be seen again. They’re treats we rarely enjoy, making them a pretty special gift!

Here is a list of items I recommend that are fun, small enough to fit into most stockings and either educational or useful!

  • Veggie Tales DVDs
  • Sewing Kits from The Whole KIT ‘n Kaboodle
  • Card games like Blink, Old Maid, Skip-Bo…
  • Regular decks of cards
  • Mittens or gloves, hats, scarves, ear muffs
  • Socks (okay, bordering on being in the “not fun” category, but my kids are always happy to see socks without holes)
  • Fun bandaids
  • CDs
  • Books
  • Hair clips and such for little girls (although I have no experience in this area!!)
  • School supplies

What items do you put in your kids’ stockings?

Stocking Stuffers for Moms

December 10, 2010 by Laura 31 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

As I’ve mentioned before, my friend Anne and I stuff each other’s stockings each year. It takes the pressure off of our husbands and we have a lot of fun. Several of you have asked for ideas of what we put in each other’s stockings. I’m posting this to answer that question AND so that if you want to, you can print this off and leave it dangling (innocently) in front of your husband if you would prefer that he stuff your stocking instead of having a friend join in the fun.

Anne is very creative and frugal. She’s put some pretty cool and interesting things in my stocking before including fire starters she made from egg cartons, saw dust and melted wax. I loved these for our fireplace! Yes, you are only limited by your imagination when it comes to stuffing a stocking. If you know a person well enough, you know exactly what she needs or loves.

I happen to know that Anne loves Ghiradelli Chocolate Chips, making that perfect for her stocking. I also gave her homemade vanilla last year and a jar of Homemade Ranch and Homemade Italian Dressing Mixes. Oh so practical. And tasty.

Here are more ideas for a lady’s stocking!

  • Pens  – because the stub of a crayon she finds in her purse or by the phone just won’t cut it. She needs pens.
  • Paper Clips – she’ll never think to buy them for herself and she needs them
  • Heavenly Homemakers Downloadable Recipe Cards – if you wait a couple of days, you’ll find all of these on sale!
  • Small (and pretty) note pads – because they’re more fun to make lists on than the back of a school math paper
  • Kitchen Towels – because all of her other ones are stained or torn…or in the hamper
  • Lotion Bars from MadeOn – this stuff works miracles on my dry skin!
  • Wooden Spoons and other Kitchen Utensils – so she can bake you something
  • Warm Fuzzy Slipper Socks – for the same reason she needs Kitchen Towels, plus her feet are cold
  • Flexi-Clip from Lilla Rose – because they’re beautiful and SO easy to use and inexpensive and pretty and…
  • Cake Decorating Supplies – because they’re just fun!

Ladies, fill in the gaps by leaving comments of suggested stocking stuffers you’d have fun finding in YOUR stocking Christmas morning!

The Most Practical Gifts

December 8, 2010 by Laura 12 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Hello, my name is Laura and I’m a bundle of fun and a barrel of laughs. Being with me is a hoot. I’m one big party. I give the coolest gifts.

Just kidding. About all of it. Except that my name really is Laura.

I can be kinda fun and I like to host parties. I have barrels of wheat and bundles of brown rice, both of which I think are a hoot. Which leads me to the “coolest gift” statement. The fact that I think wheat and rice are so exciting may tell you something about the gifts I give. I will never win the “Coolest Gift Giver Prize”.

I’m not too much into giving junky or fru-fru gifts and I don’t usually like to spend a lot, not because I’m stingy (hopefully), but just because I don’t see the importance of spending tons of money on gifts. Unless someone needs something.

I am a Practical Gift Giver.

Gifts for our boys usually include items of clothing they need, shoes, jammies and books. They get some toys too, but I’ve got to see the practicality in the toy before I’ll spend money or Swagbucks on it. (Like Legos. I can totally get into Legos.)

And games. I love games. Especially if they are games I can win.

Did I just say that out loud?

I think I come by my Practical Gift Giving honestly. One Christmas my grandma gave all of the men in the family a pair of ear plugs. All of them. My dad, my brother, my uncles, my cousins…all of them. We were a family of farmers (and preachers…hmmm..) so ear plugs were a very practical gift. But we all got tickled because everyone started putting them in and wearing them around during our big get-together. Every single male in our family looked ridiculous, but that’s okay. They couldn’t hear all of us females laughing and making fun of them.

Ah the memories.

I say all that to let you know that I’m getting ready to write a short series here with some practical gift suggestions. I already wrote a post about Gifts for Women. Cast Iron, Pyrex Dishes, Stoneware. Practical.  Makes me SO happy.

Here are the posts I have planned so far:

Gifts of Books
Gifts of Games (The kind I can win – just kidding – not really)
Toys I Like (to watch my kids play with)
Stocking Stuffers for Kids (Yes, these can actually be practical)
Stocking Stuffers for Moms (Yes, because Moms really can have a stuffed stocking)
Gifts for Men (If you can twist my arm hard enough. It’s HARD to buy for men, much less post about it.)

I promise not to suggest that you buy ear plugs. But I may request some for myself this year. Have you ever tried to write a complete sentence with the noise going on at my house?

Gifts for Women (a not so subtle hint for husbands…)

December 1, 2010 by Laura 26 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links which won’t change your price but will share some commission.

Okay Gals, not that I actually know every item that you would put on your Christmas List, but I took a chance that you and I probably like many of the same kitchen goodies and came up with a list for you to give to your husband or anyone else who might be desperate to buy you something. To make sure he sees this post, conveniently leave it up on the screen and put your laptop in his favorite chair. Or you can just print out the post and circle your favorite choices in bright red lipstick. I’m sorry that I am not at all into bling or fru-fru, so if you want any of those things, you’ll have to tell him yourself. However, if you’re looking to bake or cook or watch wheat turn into flour, I’ve got you covered…

Dear Heavenly Homemakers Husbands,

I’m glad you are so eager to make your wife happy on Christmas morning. I’m pretty sure she would love many of these great items to make her cooking and baking experience wonderful. Now of course, you know that if she has some of these great gadgets, you will benefit. Not that you’re buying her these gifts because of selfish reasons. But hey, there is likely to be a chocolate cake or some homemade bread or even a pie in it for you (quite often I would imagine), so I’d say it’s a win-win.

I know you guys aren’t so much into words and details so I’ll work hard to simply state the facts. (Food…good…nice gifts…yah)

First, let’s start with Stoneware. I love stoneware and feel that baking in them creates the best bread and brownies ever. Here are some stone baking pans of choice:  Round Pizza Stone; Rectangle Baking Stone Set; Stone Bread Pan. Did you want to see the bread and brownies she can make you with these stones? Yes I thought you did:  Bread…Brownies (food…good).

Next, let’s look at some Cast Iron. I like having a big Cast Iron Skillet. Your wife can scramble some mean eggs in a skillet like this, or fry up some good burgers or steaks.

Third, I will show you Stainless Steel Bakeware and Stainless Steel Cookware. Both are among the best quality for your wife to cook with and while they may look a little bit expensive, you should know that they last a million (give or take) times longer than their cheap non-stick counterparts. Plus they’re much safer to cook with and I’m not trying to tug on your heart strings or anything, but I know you do so cherish the health of your beloved.

I can’t leave out Pyrex Dishes. Pyrex Dishes will make your wife’s job of cooking and freezing and reheating leftovers oh so much easier. They are not expensive and they have nice lids that come with them. I like this set and this set and this set and this set. You don’t have to buy them all, but well…you sure could if you wanted to because your wife would find a great use for every single piece.

Don’t get all panicky on me now, but I absolutely have to mention the Grain Mill. I’ve already written you a letter about why you should buy a Grain Mill for your wife, so just head right on over and read all about it. Long story short:  good bread, save money, be healthy without knowing it. Oh and also, your wife will flip with joy when she sees it.

Last but not least, I will mention that your wife might enjoy some of our Hand Crocheted Items, which of course you will be willing to use often as you help her clean and wash dishes. Hey, pick out some things that are the same color as your favorite sports team and you’re all set.

Happy Eating Shopping,
[email protected]

Wives, what have I forgotten here? What’s on your Christmas list?
