Cute Clothes and Encouragement. Hey, Moms! This is For You!!

October 2, 2015 by Laura 4 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

You know those days when you’ve been up-and-at-em for hours – but you still haven’t made it back to your room to actually get dressed? And then how on that very day someone drops by and gets to see you in your jammies? And then later that same morning someone else stops by and you’re still in your jammies, but by then you’re like, Whatever. At least I brushed my teeth.

Yeah, that happened to me this morning. It actually happens often around here. I know the whole “get dressed down to the shoes when you first get up in the morning” advice works well for many and would help me avoid meeting people at the door in my fleece polka-dot pants – but that method simply doesn’t work for me. I roll out of bed early and seek quiet time in my chair with God right away (necessary so that I won’t commit murder later in the day or otherwise think that the success of my day is up to me alone). Then I make breakfast. Then we start school. Then I work out. I really don’t want to get dressed for the day until after I’ve had my workout.

For some reason I thought maybe you needed to know all of this.

Anyway, the two people who stopped by today both happen to be dear friends who think I’m adorable in my pj’s, and by that I mean that they love me no matter how silly I look. So now let’s talk about clothes and how hard moms work (because this segue it just makes sense).

Fun and Encouragement For You!

I feel no guilt about jammie pants at 10:30am, and if I wanted, most days could be yoga pant days or the like because we school from home and I work from home. Clothing is optional (well not that kind of optional – oh, you know what I mean). But I’ve noticed a big difference in yoga pants days vs. cute jeans days – in my mood, in my productivity, in how I interact with my husband – everything. I like dressing in actual clothes (after my morning routine, workout, blah blah blah). Cute clothes are fun.

Ladies – I’m not going to go completely “do this because you’re worth it” on you. But I am going to suggest that there is a lot to be said about taking care of ourselves in all kinds of ways. Eat well, drink water, exercise, spend time with Jesus, and most days – try to put on a cute outfit.

Cute is relative. Your cute is your cute – so you rock that cute outfit, girlfriend! Be comfy (oh my goodness, be comfy), but go for the cuteness. It can be a game changer in your day!

Agree? Disagree? What have you noticed about your day depending on what you’ve chosen to wear?

Free Clothes For You!

Guess what? I just learned of a way you can get something cute and fun and just for you – for free (plus shipping, which is a flat $5.99 no matter how much you order).

thredup

I’ve been shopping at ThredUp for two or three years now for gently used kids clothes. A year or so ago, they added women’s clothes!! You guys, I’ve gotten two pairs of my very favorite jeans (which would normally be about $80 – are you kidding me?) for a huge discount!!

Finding jeans that fit well is hard (can I get an amen?) so I actually tried on a pair of the pricey ones at the store, and wouldn’t you know it? They fit amazingly well. I waited until they went on sale before I got them, plus I had a coupon, but I still paid more than I wanted. But did I mention that they fit??

Well anyway, after I knew what brand I liked, I started scoping out ThredUp for that brand in my size. Not only have I found two pairs at an enormous discount – they were brand new with tags!!! Oh yeah, by the way – not everything is used at ThredUp. You can search through all the brand new items and score big-time!

Now that you’ve all suffered through hearing about my polka-dot pj’s and my discounted jeans, would you like to hear about what you can get for free? (Thank you for your patience.)

ThredUp is offering new referrals $10 off your first and second purchases!! (That’s a total of $20 worth of free clothing for you, just in case you’re still in your pj’s and can’t do math yet.) You can absolutely use this credit for your kids, but just know that there is a lovely selection of women’s clothing, maternity, and even accessories for you to pick from for yourself.

So here’s my referral link – go get your free credit! Come back here and tell me what you picked out – even if it’s yoga pants. :)

Finally! Free Shipping and 45% Off Palm Shortening at the Same Time!

September 18, 2015 by Laura 19 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Man, I’ve been waiting for this one!! It’s hard for me to fork it out for shipping on something heavy like Palm Shortening (because I’m spoiled…and I like to save money). I’ve been needing palm shortening, but I was waiting for it to go on sale and sync up with a free shipping weekend. I waited, and I waited, and I waited…

Here it is! It is a free shipping weekend at Tropical Traditions AND their Organic Palm Shortening is 45% off through Sunday! $26.89 for a gallon…yes please.

palm_shortening

How do I use Palm Shortening?

Well first of all, it’s almost pie baking season. Palm Shortening is a fantastic, healthy alternative to Crisco when making pie crusts (because our bodies can digest it well). I fry foods in it because it can withstand high temperatures without becoming hydrogenated (this is rare for a fat!). I use palm shortening to make my Whole Wheat Quick Baking Mix (like Bisquik), which is then used to make all kinds of goodies.

My Favorite Ways to Use Palm Shortening (and why it's good for you)

Yes, I love palm shortening.

Heard about the deforestation problem that accompanies the harvest of palm oil? This is not an issue where Tropical Traditions is concerned. They practice safe and environmentally friendly methods of palm tree farming. Read more details here. You can trust Tropical Traditions when it comes to healthy, nourishing food and the care of the earth.

Find the Organic Shortening here. Use the code 21159 at checkout to receive free shipping. The sale price is only good through Sunday, September 20. Stock up time!

Do you love palm shortening? How do you use it? Do you like frying food in it or do you prefer to fry in coconut oil?

This post contains my referral link. New customers who purchase through the links in this post will receive a free Virgin Coconut Oil Book!

The Easiest Way to Make Muffins, Plus 23 Delicious Muffin Recipes

The Easiest Way to Make Muffins

I love it when I order something and then I forget about it. When a package comes I get to be surprised! What did I order? What did I get? What’s in the box?

It is especially silly that I do this even when ordering with Amazon Prime two day shipping. There are just too many things to remember from a Wednesday to a Friday, apparently.

Remember when I told you about the fun-shaped silicone muffin cups for a great price? I got me some of those, then I surprised myself with them two days later when the package came. “What’s in the box?” asked the boys. I have no idea. And then this was inside:

silicone4

I think I squealed.

The 12 regular Muffin Rounds together with a set of 12 Stars is still on sale. You, too, could surprise yourself with a package.

Early this week I went with the freeze muffin batter for easy breakfasts idea. The easy idea just got easier with these cups!

See how easily the frozen batter pops out?

silicone muffins 4

To clean these, I simply rinsed them well in very hot water.

silicone muffins 5

I put all of the frozen batter shapes into a freezer bag for another day.

Then I baked a few muffins for a snack. Not only do I sometimes forget what I order online, I also sometimes forget I have muffins baking in the oven. This is what timers are for, Laura. Ah well. So they are only slightly overdone. This is what milk is for, Muffins. But are those cute, or what?

silicone muffins 7

Well, I for one am very excited about my new toys. I also love the bright colors. Silly as it is, the rainbow of muffin cups made the stirring and the freezing and the baking more fun. It doesn’t take much for me, apparently. After all, I’m the one who squeals when I open a package that I ordered for myself.

Did you get yourself some of these? Check out all the varieties I found, along with the coupons some of them offer. (These circles and stars are the best deal though.)

Here’s a list of the 23 wholesome muffin recipes we have listed here at Heavenly Homemakers:

Are Essential Oils a Fad?

September 10, 2015 by Laura 18 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Let’s talk. Are Essential Oils a fad?

Essential Oils - Fad

Chevron decor, tatoos, and skinny jeans – plus a bunch of stuff I’m not aware of because I just don’t keep up very well. Those are kind of fads, right? I mean, chevron is the way to decorate right now – but in a few years we’ll all be sick of it just like we got sick of our peach and teal southwestern wallpaper of the 80’s (raise your hand if you remember this delightful decorating era).

We went from flared jeans to skinny jeans – as if we all sorely missed our pant legs and want to now hug them close. I’m not opposed to tatoos, but I do wonder if people might eventually get tired of looking at the very same thing on their arm for 60 straight years. This is why I didn’t decorate my new bathroom in chevron – because I’d get tired of it eventually. Clearly there is a direct connection in my logic between chevron, bathrooms, and tatoos. It all makes sense.

And then there are diets. I’d love to think that the “low fat” trend is on its way out. I mean, it is if I have anything to do with it. Eat real food fats like butter and coconut oil! Balance this with other real foods! You have nothing to be afraid of! There, I’m doing my part. (Yes, you’ll still fit into your skinny jeans.)

So let’s talk about Essential Oils. They are all the rage. Are they a fad? Or are they the real deal?

It’s easy to discover a product and declare it to be the be all and end all. The product that cures everything. The thing that heals what ails you and cleans your toilets too. Got naughty toddlers? There’s an oil for that. Feeling sluggish? There’s an oil for that. Need to sleep better? Oil!

Are Essential Oils a Fad

Is it for real? This is what I think:

1. Essential Oils aren’t new. We just think they are.

They were the first medicine. There are 188 references to oils in the Bible. Oils were found in King Tut’s tomb. Oils have been around for a very long time, but I certainly never heard of them until just a few years ago. That’s why it seems like they are the latest thing. Perhaps there’s a lot of hype going along with oils now because they seem new to so many of us. But they aren’t new – and I don’t believe they are a fad. I guess to some people they might be – as in they’ll get excited about them for a while, then brush them aside when something else comes along. But I plan on using them forever (she says, as she takes a whiff of peppermint oil).

2. Oils work. I can attest to this.

They’ve helped our family with countless issues. Our family has experienced their work many times over. (That was me, being very vague and non-specific because the FDA doesn’t allow me to say much more.) :)

3. Oils are easy. I love this.

I do not have to run my kids to the doctor every time they have an ailment. Essential oils are a perfect remedy to try first. I love having them in my cabinet so that we can often experience immediate relief when we begin to feel yucky. At the very least, they give temporary relief as our bodies do their job to fight off sickness. And there’s no “wait four hours before using again” like conventional medicines. Need to rub some on fifteen minutes after the first application? No problem.

4. Oils are not the be all and end all. Nothing is. Okay, well – Jesus is. C’mon now.

This summer our 13 year old, Elias, got his shoulder yanked out of its socket at church camp. Unfortunately, we didn’t know that was the problem at first. He just said his “shoulder hurt.” (He is a man of few words.) I oiled him just as Asa always does when he has a sports injury. Whereas Asa usually finds relief immediately, the oils didn’t even take the edge off Elias’ pain. I tried other oils. Nothin’. That’s when I finally looked at Elias head on and saw that his arm and shoulder looked funny (and by funny, I mean so not funny). Off to the chiropractor we went, where his shoulder was put back in place (also not funny). Oils are great, but they couldn’t put Elias’ shoulder back in its socket. There are doctors for this.

What are your thoughts?

I’d love to hear your experiences with Essential Oils! Do you use them? In what ways have they worked for you? Which ones are your favorites?

Look What I Just Found to Go With the Pancake Muffin Idea!

September 3, 2015 by Laura 10 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Some have asked where I got the pan that turned out my cute Pancake Muffins. Oh, I replied with the back of my hand resting on my forehead, I used a regular muffin pan, then I carefully hand-carved each of them to become a flower.

Easy Pancake Muffins

Yeah, right.

How to make a cute pancake muffin

I used silicone baking cups I had received from Demarle as a review product several years ago. That’s when I learned how fun and easy silicone is to work with. I’ve done the research on silicone, and as long as it is BPA free, I trust it to be safe to use. Wow are they ever easy. I love them.

I looked on Amazon to see if I could find something similar at a lower cost. Not only did I find some flowers here – they are at a much lower cost.

silicone1

You just set these cups on a baking sheet, fill them, and bake as normal. The muffins pop right out and you can just rinse out the cups or throw them into the dishwasher.

After I found the flowers, I was curious if they had any friends. Oh yes. They do.

Hearts

silicone3

12 regular Muffin Rounds together with a set of 12 Stars – the best deal of all of these since this one comes with 24 altogether!

silicone4

And oh my goodness…Bears!

silicone2

Our regular muffins and Pancake Muffins turn into works of art. It is too easy.

Take note that the coupon is not available on all these sets, but some of them are priced lower than the sets with coupon anyway. Sweet! Have fun impressing everyone with your beautiful baking skills, while you spend very little time cleaning up after your brilliant self.

What to do with Stinky Shoes (Not that You Have Any of Course)

July 19, 2015 by Laura 25 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

You know what really stinks?

Shoes. After they’ve had feet in them.

And after they’ve gotten wet. Or sweaty. Or dirty. Or wet, sweaty and dirty. You may think something large and furry crawled into your closet and died. Oh no. It’s just the shoes.

Thankfully there is hope. You do not have to dread being in the same vehicle with (or within a ten mile radius of) the wearer of said shoes.

What to do with stinky shoes

Wad up a big bunch of newspaper and stick them down into the shoes for a day or two. Set them outside in the sunshine if possible. Severely stinky shoes may require a removal of newspaper and re-stuffing of fresh newspaper after the first day for a continued de-stinking treatment.

newspapershoessm

If you enjoy sitting back with a nice cup of coffee while reading your newspaper, I highly recommend reading the newspaper before wading them into the shoes as the newspaper not be nearly as enjoyable after taking on the stink of the shoe.

And now I will end this post by saying that I find it comical that only a weird blogger such as myself will take the time to snap a picture of newspapers stuffed into stinky tennis shoes.

Enjoy the FREE Gift of a 32 Ounce Jar of Coconut Oil from Tropical Traditions This Weekend!

July 3, 2015 by Laura 6 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I love it when Tropical Traditions offers this! It’s a 4th of July special…pretty much the best one of the year. We can all put a 32-ounce jar of Organic Gold Label Coconut Oil – the best of the best (seriously, my favorite of all coconut oils) – into our cart at a price of $0.00. (Click here then scroll down to find it and put it into your cart.

coconut_oil

Here’s the nitty-gritty: We have to pay shipping on our order, and they require a minimum purchase of $19.00. This is fair, plus it means that we can choose some additional goodies for our family while we enjoy our big free jar of oil!

Here are some great sales they are running alongside the freebie that you might want to consider to achieve your $19 minimum:

Organic Palm Shortening is on sale 45% off! I use this stuff like crazy. I’m grabbing a bucket to go with my free oil.

palm_shortening

Organic Gold Label Coconut Oil (just like the free one above) is Buy-One-Get-One-Free. So pretty much I’m getting three jars of this oil in my order and only paying for one. (Although never would I actually pay $40 for one jar of their oil. I don’t care how great it is. I wait for it to go on sale – every time. This is the best sale I’ll come across. I’m taking advantage!)

tropical traditions coconut oil 2

Pure Coconut Oil (one of their odorless, flavorless varieties) is on sale Buy-TWO-Get-TWO-Free. This is an awesome deal. I’m not getting any this time because I’m well stocked up on this variety, but I wanted to be sure and point it out in case you need some. That’s a great price per jar ($11.25 each).

Tropical Traditions Pure Coconut Oil

If you don’t need additional coconut oil or palm shortening along with your free jar of oil – here’s a hint to keep your shipping costs lower:

Order some soap. I super love their Coconut Oil Soaps. This is the only kind I use and the only kind our son Malachi (who has very sensitive skin) uses. He even uses it to wash his hair.

tropical_traditions_5

Anyway, their soaps are wonderful and don’t weigh much. This keeps shipping costs lower if you want to simply add some of those to your cart along with the FREE coconut oil to reach your cart minimum.

And if you just can’t find anything else to get, and you want to keep your shipping costs low – order some chocolate. It’s for a good cause. :)

BONUS: If you are a brand new customer with Tropical Traditions and you click through the referral links in this post – along with your free jar of coconut oil, you’ll receive a free  Virgin Coconut Oil Book with your order.

These offers are good through Sunday, July 5.

Go grab your free coconut oil! Have a wonderful holiday weekend!

Have FUN With Your Spouse and The “For Married Couples Only” Gift That Keeps on Giving

July 2, 2015 by Laura 5 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

You know what I gave Matt for Father’s Day this year? New seat covers for his truck. What? His driver’s seat was coming apart so badly that the stuffing was pulling out every time he stepped out of his truck.

Do I know how to give a practical gift or what?

C’mon. I know I’m not the only practical one around here. You all are frugal minded, practical thinkers like me right? But we doooooo like to have fun, yes?

Having fun with our spouse is so important. (I’m not just talking about that kind of fun. I mean I am. But there’s also stuff like board games and inside jokes about peanut butter. As you can see, I’m one big party.)

The longer I’ve been married and the older our kids get – I’ve gotta tell you – I’ve found it to be a little bit harder to cut loose and have fun. (What can I say? Their needs and schedules take up a lot of my time and energy. And also, I often fall asleep before our teenage boys go to bed. ‘Nuff said.)

I’ve recently been really struck with recognizing the importance of having fun with Matt in front of our kids. They need to see that married fun is THE BEST. I want them to look forward to married fun and know that it never ends.

So, fun with my spouse while the kids are around:

  • I flirt with him. It’s all in the eyes…and eye brows. Or something like that.
  • We laugh at inside jokes and the kids have no idea why we are laughing. (Obviously, every time we do this they think we are the coolest adults ever and they are so proud to call us their parents.)
  • We let the kids catch us kissing.
  • I throw my legs over onto Matt’s lap while we’re all sitting in the living room for family prayer time or to watch a movie. It’s all appropriate – and the kids need to know that we dig each other and like to snuggle even though we’re really old and have been married for a really long time.

And now let’s just briefly (and quietly) talk about fun with the spouse while the kids aren’t around.

Aside from the times we find to leave the kids at home while we go for a walk together, alone time pretty much has to be scheduled in these days since I typically stop accurately finishing sentences at 9:30 and then become comatose by 10:00 at night while my kids are saying, “Really, Mom? You’re tired already?” (If we could only tuck them in with a kiss at 8:30 like we used to. Crazy, energetic, awake teenagers.)

So quiet, alone time with Matt is harder to come by but is more important than ever at this stage is our lives. We need it. The kids need to know we need it. And while the kids mean the world to us – our marriage means even more.

Therefore, we schedule alone time together – at home if at all possible. Let me tell you something. We don’t need a restaurant. We don’t want a movie. We don’t need to go anywhere we might have to share our alone time with other people. We’re selfish like that. (Or smart. Take your pick.) Maybe when we’re empty-nesters we’ll choose to go where the people are for special outings. Right now, while the alone time is rare, we jump at a chance to look at and talk to no one but each other.

No matter how old your kids are, I’m guessing maybe you can relate.

So can I tell you one of the neatest blessings we’ve happened upon recently? We received a gift of Melt: Massage Video Series a few months ago. Normally I wouldn’t look twice at something like this. Lessons in massage? Eh. Matt has always done a great job rubbing my tight muscles and treating me to a loving back rub.

But you know what? These videos have been a wonderful gift for our marriage and our alone time together. When I think about how much money we haven’t spent on “going out” on dates – I believe the investment in this series quickly pays for itself and truly becomes the gift that keeps on giving.

melt

No need to question the appropriateness of these videos. While I do only recommend these for married couples – simply because loving massages like this are intimate – these are very tastefully done. They are created by a professional and simply teach great massage techniques. They have offered some very special moments for us in our alone time.

Better yet? We’ve been able to take what we’ve learned from this series and enjoy the treat of a massage without the benefit of scheduling it in. This series has taught a 30 minute, a 15 minute, and even a 5 minute massage! How about that? Perfect for busy (and tired) parents who want to spend time loving on each other whenever they can find a spare moment.

Consider looking into this lovely resource. Our friends at Melt know that you appreciate a deal – because I told them that you did. :) Frugal and practical – that’s who we are here at Heavenly Homemakers, right? So for six days only, they are offering us a 20% discount on their Melt: Massage for Couples Video series.

Click here to learn all the details. You’ll even find some fun freebies there while you’re at it. Then you’ll be well on your way to massage wonderfulness.

I dare say, while Matt is really enjoying his Father’s Day truck seat covers, he appreciates even more when I tear myself away from all my other responsibilities (I’m talking to you – busy teenagers) and take the time to focus all my attention on him. I’d love to hear how you and your spouse find alone time to spend together during this season in your lives.

This post is sponsored by Couples Massage Courses. It is a pleasure to work with them and learn from them.

Who Has a Favorite Pen? Everyone, Right?

June 26, 2015 by Laura 21 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I have a favorite pen. I know I’m not the only one. You also have a favorite pen, right?

For whatever reason, my nicest handwriting, my best brainstorming, and my most meaningful journaling times are when I’m using my favorite pen. This may be as weird as my “can’t handle sticker on produce” issues so if you don’t also have a favorite pen…just whatever. Not all pens are created equal and if it isn’t my Pentel, I just can’t write nicely. This is for real.

pentel

I really prefer a black pen (thanks for asking) but the colored ones are fun too. They have these squishy finger grippers that are just right for, you know, gripping. If I lose the lid to my pen, it ruins the entire writing experience because while I’m writing, the lid to my pen must be securely on the end of the pen or I just can’t hold it correctly. This is also for real.

I should probably stick to blogging recipes and homemaking stuff because writing about my weirdness may scare people away. Though I, for one, think that good pens are a part of homemaking. The best grocery lists are written with pens like these. And they are certainly a part of my healthy spiritual walk (reference the meaningful journaling times above).

Well, all that to say: If you don’t have a favorite pen, maybe you’d like my favorite pen to become your favorite pen? Then we can {squeal!} be pen pals (except not the actual kind who write letters to each other, because while I love the idea of that, I stink at writing letters to people. I’m not proud of this.)

So there I was, looking at Amazon for organic food coupons (found this one for coconut oil) – and would you believe I came across a coupon for a whole pack of my favorite pens?! Indeed. Be still my heart.

I’m going to grab a couple of packs to use for all the reasons I love these pens, plus to share with the teen girls at church camp I’ll be teaching in a few weeks. I figure they might not yet have a favorite pen so I need to take advantage of these moments during their formative years.

Please tell me you have a favorite pen.
