Will All of the Real Moms Please Stand Up?

Will All of the Real Moms Please Stand Up

Why? Why do we do it to ourselves?

We’re all just moms.

Why do we think (even though we know better) that all the other moms have everything under control, all of the time? Why do we see messes in our own homes and feel badly because the other moms surely never have messes like the ones we have? Or at least not as often as we do? Why do we sometimes feel like a failure when our kids don’t obey…again?

Why do we sometimes feel like we aren’t doing a good enough job? Why do we think that our kids are the only ones who throw fits?

Why does it seem like my children are the only ones who haven’t learned to put their games away before they get out another toy to play with?

Haven’t I trained them well enough? Haven’t I told them the same things over and over again?

Do any of these thoughts go through your head when you and your kids are having a bad day? Do you tend to assume that your kids are the only ones that (fill in the blank)?

As a real mom, I’m here to tell you that there are many times that:

  • My kids don’t obey me the first time.
  • My floor has toys all over the place (mixed in with dirt and dust bunnies).
  • My kids have boogers on the end their fingers and they just don’t seem to know what to do with them.
  • Nobody can find matching and/or clean socks.
  • My kids would rather not change their clothes.
  • My kids want to argue with me.
  • My kids fight with each other.
  • No one (but me) can see the junk under the dresser that needs to be picked up.
  • My bathrooms smell like pee. (C’mon boys…learn to aim already.)

When those things happen, I can second guess myself and the fact that I really am doing a good job with this mothering/homemaking thing God has called me to do.

I can feel like I’m failing at the most important job I’ve been given, second to being my husband’s help meet, but of course sometimes I’m really struggling with that one too.

And I feel like everyone else must be doing a much better job than I am.

And that surely none of the other Christian wives and mothers out there feel this way. Because the other Christian wives and mothers surely never get frustrated or behind on their work or overwhelmed. Because the other Christian wives and mothers are all more organized than I am and probably pray more than I do and train their kids better than I do and have a meek and quiet spirit and always have a gentle answer for their precious little ones.

Yeah…it’s all a lie.

A big fat juicy lie (with a booger on top).

We are not alone.

Our job is a work in progress. Continually. All the time. Forever and ever amen.

The training and the loving and the nurturing and the cleaning and the crying and the praying…it’s continual.

We train and we work and we pray and we just keep doing it. Day after day.

Guess what Moms? That’s what ALL of us are doing. Day after day.

Training children to be like Jesus is the hardest job on this earth. Training them to be like Jesus in the middle of trying to grow to be like Jesus ourselves….

Yeah, Satan doesn’t like that very much.

That’s why he makes it so hard. He doesn’t want to us to succeed.

And he really wants you to think that you are the only one who is struggling.

So, if you are a real mom – the kind that has imperfect children and an imperfect home? The kind that is working really, really hard to train your children to be like Jesus. The kind that has a hard time keeping up with every single thing that needs to be done every single day. The kind that is  plugging away and striving to be Godly, but not quite reaching perfection.

The kind of mom that relies continually on the grace of God and on His loving mercy.

Won’t you please join me in acknowledging this battle we’re in together?

I’d love it if all us real moms would please leave a comment here on this post. Even if all you do is sign your name. Or simply say, “Yes, I’m a real mom.”

Or, if you’re really feeling brave – go ahead and tell us about your latest parenting/homemaking struggle. Because we’ve all been there done that (or if we haven’t yet…we probably will tomorrow).

And then the next time any real mom out there is having a bad day or needs a little reassurance –

She can come here to this post and be reminded by the list of all of us other real moms that she is a part of a community of other women doing many of the same things she is doing everyday. And struggling with many of the same things she is struggling with day after day….

And we’ll all know that we are not alone.

From one real mom to another…Thank You.

There’s a lot of excitement at our house right now! Christmas is coming…but even better…Grandpa Coppinger is coming!

We go to California every other year for Christmas. Since we went out last year, that means we won’t see most of Matt’s side of the family this year. :(

BUT, it is working out  for Matt’s dad to come from California to see us!

(Let’s not tell him how cold it is in Nebraska right now. Or about all the snow. And ice.)

He flies in this Thursday and gets to stay for over a week! He’s wonderful to have around! He plays with the boys. He fixes things around the house. He compliments my cooking…

He hasn’t seen my dad since Matt and I got married 15 years ago. Both of our dads are excited to see each other again when we make a quick trip to Kansas on Christmas day!

It’s gonna be a great time! I’m so thankful God worked out all the details for him to come!

Decorating With Memories

 Ugh…I miss my mom.

I always miss her…but I really miss her during Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

She always loved getting ready for holidays. While my favorite part of the holiday season is cooking and baking lots of yummy food…her favorite part was always making fun and beautiful crafts. She’d sit for hours on winter evenings working on homemade ornaments and gifts for her co-workers and for our family. She loved it.

Thanksgiving weekend as I was getting out all of our Christmas decorations I really took note of all of the beautiful handiwork that was hers. I am SO thankful we have so many decorations that she made.

It’s like hanging beautiful precious memories all over my home.

I already shared with you about Malachi’s quilt from his Grammy.  Today I’d really like to share some of the Christmas treasures around our house…

The first year Matt and I were married, she hand-quilted us our very own Christmas tree skirt. It is so, so pretty. I stare at it for a long time when I put it at the base of our tree.

christmasdecor092sm

Every single year…until she was just too sick to create any more…Mom made all of her grandchildren their very own hand-made ornament.

christmasdecor093sm

christmasdecor094sm

I am SO glad she put the date on them. The boys love hanging their very own “Grammy” ornaments.

Malachi doesn’t have any “Grammy” ornaments…so he gets to figure out where to put her pillow…

christmasdecor099sm

I was around ten years old or so when Mom first learned how to do counted cross stitch. One of her first big projects was to make stockings for all of us. She made a “Mom” “Dad” “Kevin” and “Laura” stocking.

When my brother and I got married…she made one for our spouses. As we started having kids…she made a stocking for each of them. (Giggle…Each time she found out my sister-in-law or I was expecting, she requested that we please name our new baby something with seven letters or less…so that their name would fit on a stocking!)

christmasdecor0915sm

Mom didn’t plan on getting sick. But she was always planning for the next craft. That’s why there was plenty of stocking material in her “stash” even after she was too sick to make things anymore. And that’s how…even though she’s gone…all of my kids and all of my brother’s kids still have stockings from Grammy.

christmasdecor0913sm

There’s a lot of comfort in memories.

christmasdecor091sm

What my mom created to be small Christmas gifts…turn out to be our biggest Christmas treasures.

The most beautiful decorations of all.

Menu Plan for the Week

Remember that foot of snow we got last week?  Yeah, I got myself very stuck in a parking lot this weekend. And I had to walk home. (It is times like this that I think having a cell phone would be nice. Otherwise, I don’t miss not having one.)  It was only a few blocks. (Uphill both ways.)

When I got home (and after my lips thawed out), I had the privilege of calling Matt to tell him, “I don’t know WHAT I was thinking. Like I could just ram our van through a big pile of snow? Duh. I’m sorry you married such a ditz. I love you.”

My husband is so awesome. He said lots of nice things about how I’m not a ditz. And then he came home, drove me to the snowy parking lot and pushed the van out of the snow with his muscles. Sheesh. I mean, I was in the drivers seat with my foot on the gas as he pushed but…sheesh. Strong guy.  If you’re gonna do something ditzy…it is so nice to have a very strong guy around to fix your mistakes.

I’m not planning to be quite so ditzy for several more years or at least until tomorrow…but when I do…I am confident my husband will bail me out. Again.

At least I can cook. Usually.

Here’s our menu for the week:

Sunday, December 13

Fund raising meal for Youth Missions

Monday, December 14

Where to Get Bottles for Homemade Vanilla

I’ve had many questions about where to find small bottles for your homemade vanilla.

You want to buy the amber bottles as they will protect your vanilla from sunlight. I recommend either the 4 ounce or the 8 ounce bottles.

Get 4-ounce bottles from Olive Nation here. (Use the code home for a 20% off discount!)

Other sized bottles (8 ounce and 2 ounce) which can be found through Amazon with a little searching.

I, also, love these pretty labels! They are customizable, and come in a variety of designs.

Favorite Christmas Songs? Question #51

December 11, 2009 by Laura 24 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Silent Night…Away in a Manger….I’m always happy to hear these songs this time of year. They are sweet and full of the joy and excitement of Jesus.

But, Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree….Puh Rum Puh Pum Pum (puh pum pum pum…pum…….pum)? Hearing these songs about once a year is kind of plenty for me.

That’s just my opinion of course.

I actually really love a few of the newer Christmas songs a LOT.

How Many Kings, by Downhere is my absolute favorite. Mmm, I love that song. I could listen to it over and over again. Even in July.

And have you heard The Night Before Christmas, by Brandon Heath? I just heard it for the first time this week, and I love it. You can get a free download of the song here.

So…do you like Christmas music? What are your favorite Christmas songs?

What is UP With the Snuggie? and other random thoughts

December 10, 2009 by Laura 37 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

It’s high time I wrote another random post, don’t you think?

And what better way to start than by asking the question I’ve been giving oh so much thought to lately:

What in the world is UP with the Snuggie?

Snuggies are everywhere I look. In every store. In every color imaginable. Even printed with the mascot of your favorite sports team.

I hear you can go to a football game and it looks like a regular Snuggie convention. Just think, if you’re wearing a Snuggie at a game, with the convenience of having this blanket with arm holes, you can still wear a foam finger. Rock on.

Snuggie owners…speak up! Are they as wonderful as all the advertisements make them out to be? What color do you have? Did you know you can buy Snuggies for your pets? Yep, saw them the other day at Wal-mart.

Moving right along…

We’ve had over a foot of snow dumped on us this week. It’s beautiful. It’s cold.

We’ve had two extra boys with us a good part of the week because their school has been closed as a result of all the snow. Little did those boys know that we, as homeschoolers, don’t have snow days. SO, to celebrate their days off from school, they got to come to our house and do schoolwork.

I don’t think they minded at all.

In fact…Tuesday I told Ethan, one of the boys staying with us, that he could work with Elias on his math assignment if he wanted to. A few minutes later, Elias came into the kitchen…alone.

I said, “Where is Ethan?” and Elias said, “Oh, he’s upstairs finishing my math.” Is that so?

Before I could turn around, Ethan came proudly into the kitchen holding up Elias’ math assignment saying, “I’m done!!”

Wednesday, I gave them separate math assignments. Both boys just grinned.

One more random thing to tell you:

Matt’s restaurant (okay, it’s not really Matt’s…but you know what I mean) is finally, FINALLY going to open in the next few days!!!! The one last major item on the agenda (which happened to be a motor for one of the pieces of equipment that was on it’s way to town on a truck and the truck rolled and destroyed the motor and it had to be completely rebuilt…) is finally being taken care of so that they can open!!!

We are both so excited about this. I’ll try to get down there and take some pics. Hopefully our family will be heading there in a couple of days so the cooks and wait staff can “practice” on us. Hey, I’m always willing to help. :)

Although, I do have to say that as much as possible right now, I want to stay at home by my fireplace. At the time I’m writing this post…it is 5°. But with wind chill, it feels like -16°. Brr.

Somebody hand me a Snuggie.

Make a Simple Homemade Christmas Angel Ornament

Simple Angel Ornament Craft

The boys and I saw this fun idea hanging on a Christmas tree at the library last week. I couldn’t believe how simple…yet how sweet these ornaments are. Check it out…they’re angels made from a funky paper clip.

angel5sm

Standing at the library Christmas tree examining the ornaments, I kept going on and on about how sweet the angels were. My boys were interested for about two seconds, then they just stood there nodding politely with a look in their eyes that told me that they’d rather make a pea shooter from a paper clip than an angel.

Fine, fine…but I like the angel. And so I made some. All by myself because my manly boys weren’t interested.

I thought they were interested at one point because they came into the kitchen while I was making them and said, “Ooh, what are ya makin’?”

“Those sweet little angels we saw at the library,” I told them eagerly, handing them a piece of ribbon and a bead.

Nah, it would seem that they really were just hoping I was making some kind of food.

Oh well…maybe for those of you with girl children…or kids littler than mine…you can enjoy the wonderful activity of making these ornaments together with your family. If not, bring over your beads, ribbon and funky paper clips so you and I can ooh and aah over our pretty little creations! (To their credit, my boys did think my finished results were nice.)   (And then they asked for food again.)

Because I already had ribbon and beads hanging around…my only purchase was the paper clips (which I found at Wal-mart). I was then able to make these Angel Ornaments for just a few cents each!

You will need:   Thin ribbon, beads, funky paper clips, needle and thread

angel1sm

As you take a look at the following tutorial, pay no attention to the fact that some of the pictures show green ribbon with clear beads and some show red ribbon with green beads. I had to take the pictures in stages…in between feeding snacks to boys.

angel6smCut a piece of ribbon about 10 inches long.

angel2smFold the ribbon in half.

angel3smPush the folded part of the ribbon through a bead.

angel7smPull ribbon through…

angel8sm…then fold it around the “neck” of the paper clip.

angel9smWith your needle and thread, stitch the ribbon together.
(This was the best way I found to hide the excess ribbon behind the angel’s head.)
To see exactly where you stitch the ribbon, scroll back up to the picture right above this one. See where my thumb is? Stitch there…removing your thumb first.

angel4smOoh. Aah. So pretty. So simple.

Much cuter than a pea shooter…don’t you think so?

Christmas Gifts of Food

December 8, 2009 by Laura 10 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I love giving gifts of food!

Here’s my biggest tip and reason for giving food gifts!!! Let’s say you need to take  something to a generic gift exchange. All gifts are expected to be around $20. But you don’t want to spend $20 on a gift exchange because…well…you don’t. $20 is a lot of money.

My solution? Make a gift of food. You can make it inexpensively…but a homemade food item is WORTH more than you spend on the ingredients. People pay big bucks for a homemade pie or loaf of bread or platter of cookies. Therefore, they are happy to receive a homemade food gift and will not feel slighted because you didn’t spend $20. Your gift costs less…but is WORTH $20, right?

So, if you:

  • Have no idea what to give someone as a gift…
  • Have someone on your gift list that has everything and needs nothing…
  • Need a gender generic gift for a gift exchange…
  • Want to do something nice for your friends and neighbors and coworkers…

Bake up something yummy. You can hardly go wrong with a homemade gift of food.

Here are a few food gift ideas with recipe links:

Gratituesday: Our Big, Big House

December 7, 2009 by Laura 14 Comments

gratituesdaynov09

When we lived in Colorado several years ago, our house had about 900 square feet. It was a nice little house and it was just fine. But as our family grew, and when we had company it got a bit crowded.

When we were making plans to move back to Nebraska, we were really hoping to find a house that was a bit bigger…mainly because we love to have company and wanted to be able to do that without having guests step on each other. Even a house twice  as big as our Colorado house would have seemed big to us.

Out of the blue, a friend of ours called. Said he’d heard we were moving back to York. And did we know that he and his family were moving away from York? And that they had a house for sale?

Yes, we did know that they had a house for sale and had seen in the realtor’s book that it was HUGE…and that it was out of our price range.

Never mind that, he told us. He and his wife wanted US to have their house. He said with all the people we always had in and out of our house, it would be perfect for us. He told us we needed this house.

And then, without knowing what our price range was, he quoted us a figure that was EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR.

Wow. It would seem that God wanted us to have this house.

And so we agreed to buy it…site unseen. (Because we’re either crazy or we have a lot of faith…or maybe a little of both.)

The first few hours after we arrived and toured the house …I kid you not…I was dancing around like a little kid in a toy store.

This house has over 3000 square feet of living space, plus a full (unfinished and yucky) basement for storage. There are six bedrooms. And…if you haven’t already…check out my wonderful kitchen.  There was a lot of jumping up and down going on when I first saw my kitchen. Good thing I didn’t hurt myself. I don’t have a clue how to dance.

We have a “game room” for our toys and TV…great for bunches of kids to hang out. Our living room is huge…plenty of room for lots of people.

livingroomsm

We really only use two of our bedrooms for our family. Our boys all prefer to sleep in the same room together. That leaves plenty of extra rooms for guests. We’ve been able to let people live with us temporarily…we have no problem saying yes to anyone driving through for the night. We LOVE having guests!

That being said, does this house have issues? Absolutely. It’s over a hundred years old. It is “full of character” which is our nice way of saying, “oh my word could Matt’s Honey Do List be any longer?”. There are a million things to fix and there always will be (because as soon as one thing gets fixed, something else decides it needs to fall apart).

Therefore, I often have to remind myself what a blessing our big old house is. With all of it’s goofy plumbing issues and cracked walls and yadda, yadda…I sometimes forget that God hand-picked this house for our family so that we could serve Him with it.

Lately, I’ve been very strongly reminded about what a blessing our home is. For the past three months, there has hardly been a day that has gone by that we have not had guests. This house has been “grand central station” for college kids, over-night house guests, temporary live-ins, game nights and play dates with our boys’ friends. We’ve gone through more groceries (and toilet paper) than ever before.

Last night at Small Group…there were 23 children and 16 adults. It was loud…it was crazy…it was amazing.

Forgive me for this very long post…but today I am in complete awe of this gift God has given us.

Thank you God for my wonderful, huge house that you’ve given us to use for you. (And forgive me for the times I complain about how much house there is to keep clean!)
