What Would You Like Me To Talk About Here in 2016? (And Why I Might Say “No” to Some Requests)

December 28, 2015 by Laura 52 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’ve been blogging here since November of 2007, which basically makes me an old lady in blog years. During the past 98 months (I did the math) I’ve written about topics ranging from marriage to eczema to homeschooling to parenting to healthy eating. And also butter. Obviously. It all goes hand in hand. (Not literally though.)

butter

You know what I learned the hard way several years ago in my blogging career? Never write about something I don’t know much about.

See, what happens is that when I write about a topic – any topic – many people assume I know much and oodles and aplenty about that topic. I mention the word “run” and the people start asking questions as if I’m some sort of an expert on running. They ask my advice and trust my opinions and before I know it, everyone thinks I must be some running professional. I’m left screaming at my computer screen, “Wait! Stop asking me about running! I’m not a runner! When I said ‘run’ I meant run…to the grocery store for food. The real kind. That is what I know. Real food. I always run toward real food.”

That was a bad example because no one has ever actually accused me of being an expert on running or asked me questions about it. Here’s an actual example:

mozzcheese2sm

I posted early on (March, 2009) about how to make mozzarella cheese. I’d made it a few times in my life, it’s not terribly complicated, and I thought it would be a fun post. It was. But then all of a sudden everyone thought I was a cheese-making expert. The questions started pouring in. Can I also share how to make cheddar? How about Gouda? What makes Swiss so holey? What supplies are needed for making Parmesan? Why did someone follow my recipe exactly and end up with mush? What if someone did not have the exact enzymes I recommended for mozzarella making? What might be a good substitute?

I became Mrs. Cheese Lady and all of the cheese questions were asked and people expected me to know all of the cheeseness.

mozzcheese1sm

That’s me, skillfully stretching my cheese curd in 2009.

I’m only slightly exaggerating, but suffice it to say that I quickly learned that while there are many topics I’m interested in and love learning about, there are only a few I am qualified to write about and offer advice on. Anything that I’m interested in but have not researched thoroughly or experienced muchly needs to be left to other people who have thoroughly researched and muchly experienced.

(It is clear by now that I have spent a good deal of time making up words and am therefore undoubtedly qualified to write them frequently and…muchly.)

What I’m good at (besides making up words):

  • Cooking real food
  • Keeping real food simple
  • Finding good deals on real food
  • Creating simple recipes with real food
  • Saving time in the kitchen
  • Saving money while eating real food
  • Sharing our home school experiences
  • Sharing what I’m learning in the areas of parenting and wifing (why is wifing not a real word?)
  • Sharing what I’m learning about scripture and serving others

What I love but don’t know enough to write about:

  • Essential Oils – I love them. I use them daily. They are fantastic. But I don’t know enough about them to answer questions or offer advice.
  • Natural Remedies – Like essential oils, I love and use natural remedies instead of conventional medicine if at all possible. But I’m a novice. I have to look everything up every time one of us gets sick. Please don’t ask me how to make a tincture.
  • Homesteading – The idea of having chickens and growing herbs on my windowsill intrigues me. Unfortunately, our fish only lived one week, so we don’t plan to get a goat anytime soon.
  • Parenting Teenagers – Except for the prayer part. Trusting God with our kids – this is what I know. Otherwise, I know nothing. Ask me again in ten years.
  • A bunch of other stuff that is relevant to most of us but not within my realm of knowledge. I don’t even know where to start on this list.

So what I want to know from you during the next few days is:

  • What do you love reading about here at Heavenly Homemakers?
  • What do you want to learn from me? What kind of information do you want me to share?
  • Want more recipes? More scripture encouragement? More tips on saving money? All or none of the above? Something else entirely?

All I can promise is that I’ll do my best, but I won’t write about making cheese or making a poultice for your toddlers scratched elbow. I would love to continue sharing relevant topics with you, as long as it is something I can share confidently. So talk to me! Tell me what you love reading about here the most!

The “I’m Not Here So You Might As Well Steal Everything From My Shop” Sale

No really. I’m not here. I’m at church camp and I’m mostly offline because the internet doesn’t like church camp as much as the rest of us do.

So while I’m gone, I figure you might as well go raid my shop. No really, go ahead. No one is watching. You won’t even have to sneak. I’m giving you permission.

Heavenly Homemakers Books and eCourses

I’ll even give you a coupon code – let’s call it LAURAISGONE – so that you can go fill your cart with anything you want (except for our printed items) at a 35% discount. Yep, 35% off!!!

To be clear: I’m nice, but if you buy any of our printed items with the coupon code I will reappear as soon as I’m able to refund your purchase and say, “Sorry, I’m not that nice and I can’t eat all of our printing and shipping costs.” So again: DO NOT use the code on our printed books. (Somebody sure is bossy. Good thing she’s gone.) <—Hey, I heard that.

The good news is, when you sneak into my shop you will find over 30 other e-products in our shop for immediate download. That’s a lot to pick from along with a very healthy discount.

So go to the Heavenly Homemakers Shop now. Spend as long as you want looking though all of the eBooks, Curriculum, eCourses, and more. Put everything you want (except the printed items – I can’t remember if I said that already) into your cart, then use the code LAURAISGONE to knock off 35% of your total.

You can use this code through Wednesday, July 22.

Okeedokee? Don’t have too much fun without me while I’m gone. But do enjoy the discount – on everything but the printed items. (I just can’t let it go.)

My Top 10 Kitchen Tips Ever and 10 eBooks for $10 – Through Monday Only!

Top 10 Kitchen Tips

Here is a life-changing  list of my top 10 kitchen tips ever, and the links where you will find the wonderful details on each:

10. Don’t forget to close the dispenser on your blender.
9. Never overfill said blender.
8. Clearly label your freezer food so you won’t have to wait for the food to thaw and bake before you recognize what it is.
7. A fresh tablecloth makes everything better.
6. Be sure to allow room for expansion when you fill jars with food for the freezer so your beloved jars won’t break.
5. If your garden is destroyed by a hail storm, wait and trust. It might just bounce back.
4. Buttering your pineapple is not a good idea.
3. Wearing mis-matched rubber gloves is the best way to clean.
2. Don’t touch your eyeball with your hands after chopping hot peppers.
1. Never, ever forget that God is bigger than a free range chicken.

Just reading that list makes you a better homemaker, does it not? Really. What would you ever do without my insights and advice? (I forgot to mention earlier, you should always be sure to sift the popcorn out of your waffle mix. Keep hanging around. The wisdom never ends around here, my friends.)

And now, I am excited to share with you that through Monday, February 9 at midnight, our very popular Heavenly Homemaker’s eBook Overload Package is marked down to just $10.  That’s 10 eBooks for $10.  Seriously!

41 Years Old, 42 Jars, and 40% Off. Last Day for Sale!

August 8, 2014 by Laura 8 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Remember how I turned 41 on Sunday and how I’m running a 40% off sale in my shop all week to celebrate? That sale was supposed to end Friday. I usually throw out a “last day” reminder, but I got distracted yesterday and completely forgot.

Distracted, you ask? Distracted with what?

canning jars 1

Well, I got on a roll with my canning jars, and I just couldn’t stop.

We’d been given several bags of cucumbers on Wednesday night at church. On Thursday I made and canned a double batch of Sweet Pickle Relish. I then canned peaches that Matt and the boys had brought in from one of our peach trees. Then, since I had cucumbers left after making relish, I tried my hand at dill pickles. (We haven’t eaten them yet – hope they’re good!)

I had so much fun. There’s just something so rewarding about seeing all the food fill the jars, knowing my family will be well fed this winter. 36 canning jars later, we wrapped it up for the night. Then Friday, I made 6 jars full of Super Creamy Peanut Butter to keep in the fridge. We should be all set with peanut butter for a few weeks now.

canning jars 2

You like how I dribbled peanut butter all over the outside of the jars,
then didn’t clean it up before snapping the picture?
“Wow, Laura is so clean and neat when she cooks,” said no one.

All that to say, I’ve extended the 40% off sale one more day. I wanted to give you a “last day” shout out, which means that instead of the last day being Friday, the last day is now Saturday.

Head to our Heavenly Homemakers Shop. Every downloadable item and eCourse is 40% off – a great deal! (Printed books are not included in this sale.)  Use the code BIRTHDAY at check-out for your 40% discount.

Shop our 40% off sale now through midnight, August 9.

Gratituesday: Oh, Hello Summer

July 11, 2011 by Laura 19 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’m so close to the finish line I can taste it.

The new book I’m writing…well, it turned into two books because two seemed better than one with what I was purposing for this project. I’ve been working on them for months and since May I’ve been doing little else but writing, taking pictures, inserting pictures, formatting, editing, writing some more. Occasionally, I also did my fair share of whining and feeling defeated. In the middle of this exciting but very labor intensive project, I had to pray often and remember to put all of this into perspective.

(Here’s a sneak peek at the covers of each book. I can’t decide if I’m done with those yet or not.)

Overall, I’ve loved writing these books. Because I’ve adored cooking since I was a little girl, writing Teaching Your Kids to Cook (written for parents of kids ages 2-12) and Learn to Cook (written for students ages 8 and up) has been my most enjoyable writing experience. All throughout, I’ve felt that if I was a child again and someone gave me these books, I’d melt into a puddle of happiness. Yes, I’ve gone from giddy to exhausted…from exuberant to cross-eyed and back to giddy again – all within a thirty minute time period of writing. Bless my family for putting up with me.

Now, I’m on the home stretch. I’m down to the nitty-gritty details of perfecting and tweaking and perfecting some more. The books are almost ready to turn over to Matt and others for the final editing process.

In the meantime, I’m giving myself permission to unglue from the computer screen a little more often. Yes indeed, I feel like I can finally say hello to a bit of a summer break. Instead of just sending my kids out to run in the sprinkler, I’m watching them shriek and play. Instead of waving to my kids as they run outside to jump on the trampoline, I’ve joined them a few times. Instead of only asking Matt how the garden is doing, I’ve dug into the dirt beside him.

Check out these baby birds in a nest on our porch, waiting for their mama to feed them breakfast…

Ahhhhh…it’s summertime. I’ve enjoyed it, but now I’m really enjoying it. I think I appreciate it even more than I ordinarily do, simply because I’m so giddy with excitement that my project is almost complete. (I’ll share more details as soon as I can.)

Bring on the sunshine and popsicles! :)

July 20, 2010 by Laura 8 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

There’s been more hard work going on around here (is this really called summer break?!) and we’re so excited to tell you about the new Heavenly Homemakers Affiliate Program!!

So, are ya interested in earning a little extra money? We thought maybe you wouldn’t mind. :)  A little extra money never hurt anybody’s feelings and we are hoping that the new Heavenly Homemakers Affiliate Program will be a blessing to many of you! We’ve worked hard to make this program simple to use and open to everyone, whether you have a blog or not!

Here’s the short story of how it works:

You tell your friends, family, blog readers, facebook friends, etc. about all (or some) of the products in the Heavenly Homemaker’s Shop and when they purchase something using your unique link…you earn 33% of the sale!! For instance, if you promote our new Learn Your Letters, Learn to Serve Preschool Curriculum Kit and someone buys it because of you…you make a quick $15! Not bad at all…and every little bit adds up, right?! Yes, I can think of several things I could do with $15 extra dollars. And if you sell more than one of the kits, plus a few ebooks…well, it all adds up to a nice little monthly bonus!

become_a_heavenlyhomemakers_affiliate

If you have a blog or website, it may be easier for you to promote our products and earn…BUT even if you don’t…you can still be a part of this program. You can tell your friends on facebook and encourage them to check out our products. You can tell people about the products, then email them your link for them to purchase through. Don’t spam anybody, but do feel free to use your online resources to promote our products and earn a little extra cash!

If you’re interested in learning more about the Heavenly Homemaker’s Affiliate Program and signing up to partner up with us, you’ll need to kindly agree to this agreement, then follow the links to sign up! To learn more about the program, you can read through the Heavenly Homemaker’s Affiliate FAQs. This page explains the entire process with simple, step-by-step instructions. There is even a lovely page full of banners and buttons for you to use as you promote the products in our shop! Beyond that, if you have any more questions, please email Charlene, my incredible, lovely and oh so helpful HHM Affiliate Manager at  hhmaffiliates at gmail.com.

We can’t wait to have you join us in this program!!! Sign up…be blessed!

And can I just say thanks? It’s because all of you are so wonderful that makes beginning this affiliate program so exciting for us. Hugs all around.
