What to Eat When You Don’t Have Time to Eat

September 8, 2019 by Laura 4 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

You don’t have time to eat? But we’ve all got to eat! So here’s what to eat when you don’t have time to eat…

I’ve never understood how people will say things like, “Oh, I forgot to eat lunch!” What?? You forgot to eat lunch? How did your body let you forget? My body never lets me forget. Long before lunchtime, my body is like, “Yo. I would very much like a double cheeseburger.”

So hunger isn’t an issue for me, nor is the desire to eat every meal of the day, plus snacks. I’m kind of a six-small-meals-a-day kind of a gal.

But what has become an issue for me now is finding the ability to eat every time I’m hungry. Now that we’ve got the little ones again, I’ve found that keeping up with their needs – plus the needs of my older kids and husband while trying to meet my own needs – has become more difficult. (Rest assured, my husband and older sons are incredible help and support – we’re all just busier than busy!)

So sometimes, lunchtime comes and goes and I find that while I didn’t forget to eat, I never found time to stop and eat.

Obviously, there are seasons in our lives that are busier than others, and for me, this is one of them. I mean, if Laura didn’t eat, something really important must have kept her from it (babies!), because we all know that food is a high priority for Laura. :)

What to Eat When You Don’t Have Time to Eat

But having said all of that, I know as well as you do that skipping meals and letting oneself be hungry is not a healthy pattern to begin or lifestyle to maintain. So after experiencing too many days of being hungry and not being able to eat as I needed to, I found that I HAD to get organized and be pro-active about food.

And it probably goes without saying that making sure the food I’m eating is nourishing is extra important right now. Yes, I’ll sometimes snack on chips (organic ones, because that makes them healthy, ha). But focusing on putting as many nutrients in as possible is absolutely necessary so that I can keep up with all these delightful ones God has put in our care.

So here’s a quick run-down of food I either try to buy and have on hand or food I make quickly to have on hand for grab-and-eat snacks. Yes, many of them require some prep time. But it’s easy prep, and just a few minutes of work can produce several wonderful snacks to grab and eat on the fly. It’s worth the effort to be sure we all take care of ourselves!

Fruits and Veggies – the easiest and healthiest!

  • Fresh Greens (I do know it’s weird, but I just grab the container out of the fridge and eat a few handfuls. It doesn’t taste especially delicious, but I don’t mind it plain. It allows me to get some good nourishment on the fly. And that’s all that matters!)
  • Berries or Grapes
  • Oranges or Cuties
  • Petite Baby Carrots
  • Little Sweet Peppers

Any variety of these Fat Bombs:

  • Stevia Sweetened Fat Bombs
  • Honey Sweetened Fat Bombs
  • Simple No-Bake Cookie Cups
  • Healthy Peppermint Patties

Any variety of these Cookie Dough Bites:

  • No-Bake Chocolate Fudge Cookie Dough Bites
  • No-Bake Peanut Butter Cookie Dough Bites
  • No-Bake Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough Bites
  • No-Bake Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Bites

Berries and either of these Cheesecake Parfait cream whips:

I whip up the parfait in my Blendtec super quickly, then keep it in a bowl in the fridge to eat with berries.

  • Strawberry Cheesecake Parfait
  • Chocolate Strawberry Cheesecake Parfait

A Flourless Brownie:

  • Flourless Brownie Muffins (my very favorite!)
  • Super Moist Flourless Peanut Butter Brownies
  • Super Moist Flourless Brownies

Mini Crustless Cheesecake:

  • Vanilla Crustless Cheesecake
  • Lemon Crustless Cheesecake
  • Chocolate Brownie Crustless Cheesecake

Dollar Club Drinks:

It is worth noting that I keep a supply of Dollar Coffee Club (formerly known as Javita) drink sticks on hand at all times. I drink several each day, simply because I know they benefit my health and give me what I need for immune system support, digestive support, detoxing, and ease of inflammation. Plus they taste really good, so every drink is like a treat! My favorites:

  • Peach Mango Fiber, for digestive support
  • Burn and Control Coffee, for cleansing and detox
  • Strawberry Lemonade Flex, for inflammation
  • Mixed Berry Defend, for immune system support

These don’t take the place of meals for me, but in many ways, I feel like these drinks keep me going, keep me healthy, and offer my body much of what it needs during this busy season. I’m so thankful God introduced me to these two years ago. They have met many needs!

Here’s more information I’ve written about Dollar Coffee Club products. They’ve revamped their business model to be MUCH simpler for all of us, so buying the drinks and sharing them with your friends has become tremendously easier and less expensive!

Simple Recipes and Meals

All the above snack foods and drinks are fantastic to help me get through until I can eat a solid meal. I’ve learned to be more intentional about eating plenty at mealtime. AND I am incredibly thankful that God put it on my heart a few years ago to start creating Simple Recipes to share here. These recipes have been life-changing as they take so little time to prepare but still offer us all nourishment and deliciousness. SO. THANKFUL.

You can see a huge list of Simple Recipes listed here, and of course, you can join our Simple Meals menu planning subscription service at any time.

Ready, set, eat.

Too busy to eat? Make yourself some of the above simple recipes and pick up some already-prepped fruits and veggies at the store. Grab and eat as needed. Here’s to our health!

Dear Everyone Who Hates Meal Planning…

August 25, 2019 by Laura 6 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Just in case you missed this back in May, we wanted to offer an exclusive deal to bless you as we all begin a busy new school year…

1/2-price Simple Meals Subscription!!

As if getting an entire year’s worth of Simple Meals planning packets for half-off is not enough to convince you that now is the time to grab on, allow me to share more reasons you need a Simple Meals subscription.

Dear Everyone who hates menu planning (or simply doesn’t have time for it anymore),

In all my years of being a homemaker and talking to other homemakers (25 years, thanks for asking), I have learned that VERY FEW of us actually like meal planning. I’m one of the weird ones who actually enjoys it. But most of you? Disgusted. Completely annoyed. Hate every minute of it. ABSOLUTELY OVER IT.

Dear friends. This post is for you. (And maybe for those who do enjoy meal planning but still sometimes forget to thaw the chicken.)

In an effort to be fun (!!!yeah right!!!) and not at all discouraging (???sob???), I decided to do some math and point out what I believe makes most people so very frustrated about meal planning. Are you ready? You’d better sit down for this.

Not even including the thoughts we must think about what we will feed our families for breakfasts and lunches every day, if we all run a household for 50 years, and we multiply those years by the 365 days we must figure out what to put on the table for dinner each night – the total, painful number of meal planning days is (gasp, sob):

18,250

Meals. That we have to plan. In our life. Not counting breakfast.

Oh, but should we count breakfast and lunch too, just for fun? (Laura’s idea of fun is weird and not actually fun.)

54,750

Total meals. That must come out of our heads, through our hard-working hands, and onto our bountiful tables.

Now listen. I know we all realize that we are a blessed group of people and that whining about meal planning is ridiculous and petty. After all, are we not thankful for the families we get to feed and for the food we have in abundance in which to feed them?! Yes. We are. We are very, very thankful.

But we also have to remember to buy toilet paper and make it to the appointments and sign the documents and get to all the places on time. So while we are grateful for our lives, we also recognize the truth that trying to think of what food to prepare and feed our families each day is a…

VERY BIG JOB, AMEN.

There now. I have now given us all permission to feel what we feel about food. It sure tastes good, and we sure are thankful for it. But it doesn’t appear on the table without someone thinking ahead about it, buying it, preparing it, cleaning up after it, and then doing it all again for 18,250 tomorrows.

But we do it because:

  • We love our families.
  • We want our families to be healthy.
  • And eating isn’t something that we can’t avoid.

Other jobs that we don’t like we can just ignore, you know? (I’m looking at you – baseboards that need to be dusted.) But figuring out what to feed our families every day – we have to do it whether we like it or not.

So here is my number one, very best suggestion for you…

If you hate meal planning, do this:

Figure out what you will make for dinner each night IN THE MORNING.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT wait until dinner time to plan dinner. At that time, you are hungry and tired. Your family is hungry and tired. The food is probably still frozen. And ain’t nobody happy.

If you are in the habit of waiting until it’s almost time to eat to figure out what you are going to eat – you are going to run into frustration almost every time. Or, you’re likely to fall back on unhealthy and expensive habits like grabbing take-out or ordering pizza. Those fun options should be reserved for our extra busy days or special occasions – not for the five days a week you failed to plan ahead, again.

And so, in the morning before work or school or before moving forward with whatever it is that keeps you busy each day – figure out what you are going to make for dinner. Then, put that thing in the crock pot, in the fridge, or on a list. Your entire day will go more smoothly, knowing that your evening meal is figured out and can be executed quickly at dinner time.

Now’s the part where I tell you something even better.

If you truly hate meal planning, or if you are too busy to think about what to make for dinner each night, why not reference the very wonderful and beautiful Simple Meals plans we make every single week and send to your inbox every single week? Please, please take advantage of this!!!

We do all the thinking and planning for you!! We offer specific yet flexible meal suggestions, we give you all the recipe links, we prepare your grocery list, and we put it right in your lap. Here, take a peek:

Download a free Simple Meals Plan here to see what it looks like!

Just think. You could have that in your hands every week, and then all of your meal planning tears will stop. ;)

This is not just me trying to sell you something. This truly is me trying to help your life become easier. Because I get it!! Meal planning can be stressful and difficult. Why should every single one of us invent the wheel (or in this case meal) every single night?

What if, instead, just one of us makes the plan, and everyone else gets to look at it and use it? Doesn’t that just make sense and sound fabulous!?!

It’s only $1.00 per week. $0.50/week all year long!

That makes this a no-brainer, because think of the time and money you’ll save figuring out every dinner of the week!

Get all the details here.

Your first entire year will cost only $0.50/week! Ready to join? Can’t wait to save your family time!

[wp_eStore_subscribe_fancy id=19]

This 1/2 price offer expires September 4. Your subscription will automatically renew in one year at full price (still inexpensive!!), and you can cancel for next year if you choose by simply emailing me!

There are so many places to start – and you can begin with whatever is right for you!

You Can Do This!

You may remember this eCourse from many years ago. I’m happy to share that we’ve spent the past few months re-working it so that it is brand new and improved!

Once you purchase, you can keep the course information forever and reference them as needed. Read them on your computer or print the pages you need in your hands. What else?

Oh, these eCourses only cost $10 each. (“Where else can you take an entire class at such a low cost?!” exclaims the mother of many college students.)

It’s kind of too good to be true, except that we love all that these offer and we want to make them accessible to everyone! So it’s good AND it’s true. And there’s something else:

We put them together into a Real Food Kitchen Package!

We packaged up both of the new-and-improved eCourses, and we threw in our Make-Ahead Meals and Snacks recipe eBook because you really need those incredible recipes along with these eCourses!

Summer Activities With the Kids: Go Berry, Apple, or Peach Picking!

May 30, 2019 by Laura 1 Comment

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Looking for some fun activities to do with your kids this summer? I’ve enjoyed 22 summers with kids (and counting!), so I certainly have a few ideas to share! Stay tuned during the next few weeks as we provide all kinds of suggestions for making your summer with your kids meaningful. (Subscribe here so you won’t miss out!) Today’s idea: Go Berry, Apple, or Peach Picking!

I have the BEST memories of heading to orchards, farms, and friend’s houses in the summertime with my kids so that we could pick berries, apples, or peaches.

We live in small-town Nebraska, so we are blessed to have many neighbors and friends who have berry patches, gardens, and orchards. (Yes, we have a garden in our yard too. But we don’t have the space for planting in huge bulk like many of our country neighbors.)

For years and years when our kids were little, we’d take advantage of every invitation to “come pick!” that we were able to enjoy.

Allow me to take a walk down memory lane…

We had a friend with a huge strawberry patch, where we would all load our buckets! We got to do this for FREE. What a blessing! (They’ve since sold their farm and moved out of state. Happy for them, sad for us!)

We also have friends with a gorgeous apple orchard! In the late summer, we’d head out and get as many apples as we could, all for a tiny price per grocery bag. It seemed too good to be true!

One year, my friend Anne and I borrowed the orchard owner’s cider press. After picking apples at the orchard, we spent the afternoon with all of our kids experiencing the work and joy of making homemade apple cider!

Oh my babies!

One year, we headed to Michigan for a wedding, at the perfect time for fruit picking! As we drove, we noticed sign after sign advertising “You Pick!” farms. Matt and I decided to stop at several locations on the way and enjoy time as a family picking fruit and enjoying the experience. We all still talk about that trip as one of our favorite traveling memories!

Blueberries don’t grow well in Nebraska, so picking them during that trip to Michigan was a very special treat! (Also, as we ate berry after berry while we continued to travel, somehow I ended up sitting on some and staining/ruining my pants. Hahaha! The boys still remember that too! “Mom, remember how you sat in blueberries and ruined your pants?!” Good times.)

Mmmmm, peaches! While peaches do grow well in Nebraska, we still stopped at a Peach Farm during our Michigan trip to enjoy a wagon ride to pick peaches. Of course, we took advantage of their offer to “eat whatever you like!”

Why Go Berry, Apple, or Peach Picking

Truly, the fun and joy that come with picking fruit on a farm with your family is priceless.

Yes, there are bugs. Yes, it is hard work. Yes, it may be hot. So prepare yourselves, give the kids a pep talk, take water bottles, go before the hottest part of the day, and know that while you’d love the experience to be perfect, someone may still have a melt-down.

Through the years and beyond all the less-than-fun parts, our family found these fruit picking experiences to be wonderful because:

  • The kids got to learn more about where our food comes from.
  • The kids got to learn about the hard work it takes to put food on the table.
  • We got to take home loads of delicious, nutritious fruit to eat in a variety of fun ways. (Details below!)
  • It saved all kinds of money as we either had to pay very small prices per pound of fruit, or we were encouraged to take all we wanted for free!

Beyond Berry, Apple, or Peach Picking

Once the fruit is picked, then what? Well, the fun just keeps on keeping on!

Yes, the fun comes in the form or hard work. :)

After working hard to pick the fruit, of course, we eat as much fresh fruit as we can hold. NOTHING is more delicious than sweet fruit that comes directly off the tree or bush!

But next comes the fun and work of preserving what we can’t eat fresh. The hard work pays off for months as we enjoy homemade applesauce, frozen berries in smoothies, and peach cobblers in the middle of winter. We all work together to wash, cut, and process the fruit.

Here are some ways we preserve our fruit to enjoy all winter long:

  • Make Applesauce with a Victorio or with a Blendtec. We use the water-bath method to can it – easy peasy!
  • Make Apple Pie Filling to pull out for quick pies at holiday time. We freeze the apple pie filling or we can the apple pie filling – depending on pantry and freezer space.
  • Make Apple Cider in the Crock Pot
  • Make Apple or Peach Fruit Leather
  • Freeze Whole Peaches – if we’re short on time. This turns them brown, but if we’re using them for smoothies or cobblers, it doesn’t matter!
  • Freeze Peach Slices or Whole Strawberries
  • Can Peaches for the pantry

What to make with Berries, Apples, and Peaches

You’re sure to come up with wonderful ways to use your freshly picked or beautifully preserved berries, apples, and peaches! Here are some of our favorite ways to enjoy the “fruit” of our labor. (Laura is punny.)

  • Applesauce
  • Apple Crisp (We follow this recipe but use ANY fruit depending on what we have and what sounds good!)
  • Fruit Cobbler (Recipe coming soon!)
  • Smoothies, smoothies, smoothies!
  • Strawberry Peach Slushies
  • 16 Recipes to make with Strawberries
  • Apple Butter
  • Peach Syrup
  • Easy Raspberry Pancake and Waffle Syrup
  • Blueberry Pancake and Waffle Syrup

Ready to go pick fruit?

Now that our “first batch of kids” is older, if they are able to join us, we can really pick a lot of fruit since they are able to work like adults. And here we are again, starting the process with new babes God has put in our lives. We are excited to take our Bonus Boy on fruit-picking adventures as we know he’ll love it!!

Here’s to a great summer of fun with our kids! Here are other ideas we’ve shared so far:

  • Make Donuts!
  • Have a Reading Party!
  • Make Smoothies, Milkshakes, and Popsicles

Stay tuned for more fun Summer Kid Activity ideas!

How to Cut Back on Sugar

May 7, 2019 by Laura 7 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

We all know too much sugar isn’t good for us. Oh, but why must it taste so goooood???? It’s ok! We understand and we’re here to help. Here are some suggestions for how to cut back on sugar that are actually not terribly difficult!

How to Cut Back on Sugar

I’ll give you a step-by-step. BUT!!! If the order of these suggestions is too difficult for you, don’t give up and walk away! Instead, pick just one thing from the list that you feel is doable and go for it. Then once you’ve mastered that one thing, go on to another one. Put these in any order that works for you!

1. Wean yourself off of sugary drinks.

Are you drinking your sugar? Oooof, guzzling down the sugar in the form of soda or juice can be really hard on your body and your teeth. It’s amazing how much sugar is in just one cup of juice or soda. Work on weaning yourself back. You can do it!

Consider enjoying sugary treats only in the form of food instead of drinks. That way you can enjoy your sweet treats more, but will consume less sugar!

2. Put less sugar in your tea and coffee.

My southern sweet tea drinker friends are not gonna like hearing this one. ;) But what if, when making a gallon of tea, you start gradually cutting back on the amount of sugar you add? Your taste buds probably won’t even notice the difference if it’s just a little bit at a time.

And your coffee? Can you gradually start spooning in less sugar or pouring in less sugary, flavored creamer? If you like your coffee to be creamy and the idea of cutting back on creamer doesn’t appeal to you, I’d suggest still cutting back on creamer, but adding heavy whipping cream or half-and-half to provide the creaminess and even some natural sweetness!

3. Only eat candy on special occasions, or work to give it up altogether.

This is a tough one if you have some candy favorites that you consider staples for traveling or game watching or TV watching. But I’ve found that eating candy really ruins a persons desire for real fruit and other naturally sweetened foods. (Right? Who wants a real strawberry after eating licorice?)

Try to cut back on making candy a snack, and maybe only treat yourself on a special occasion here and there. Or stop eating it altogether so you can enjoy other sweet treats that aren’t so high in sugar!

Suggestion: Buy something fun like a box of this variety of Fruit Leather and let it become your “candy.” Now that I’ve stopped eating so much sugar, these really taste like candy to me – but they are 100% fruit!

4. Gradually add less sugar when baking homemade treats.

A few years ago I decided to start experimenting with regular cake, cookie, and muffin recipes to see if cutting back on the called-for amount of sugar would still turn out a good baked good. I have been so pleasantly surprised and pleased with this experiment! It doesn’t take nearly as much sugar as a recipe typically calls for to turn out a delicious cake, cookie, or muffin!

Don’t want your family to rebel against your cookies? Again, I recommend cutting back gradually until everyone’s taste buds have adapted to the lower sugar content. After a while, you’ll find that a treat made with full sugar will taste too sweet! How about that?

Suggestion: Check out this Low Sugar Treat list of recipes we’ve shared here!

  • Easy {Low} Sugar Cookies
  • Low Sugar Lemon Melt-Away Cookies
  • Low Sugar Almond Melt-Away Cookies
  • Low Sugar Orange Melt-Away Cookies
  • Low Sugar Lime Melt-Away Cookies
  • Low Sugar Strawberry Cheesecake Parfaits
  • Low Sugar Chocolate Fudge Cookies
  • Low Sugar Chocolate Cheesecake Parfaits
  • Low Sugar Pumpkin Cheesecake Cups
  • Low Sugar Sunshine Cake
  • Low Sugar Super Moist Chocolate Cake
  • Coconut Fudge Bars
  • Low Sugar Lemon Loaf
  • Low Sugar Oatmeal Cookies
  • Low Sugar Peanut Butter Cake with Peanut Butter Frosting

Why cut back on sugar?

Here are my top reasons to encourage a smaller sugar intake every day:

  1. Sugar kills our immune systems. It’s so much harder to avoid catching illnesses when we’re eating sugar!
  2. Sugar can make us fat. Boo, I know. Our bodies only need a small amount of sugar each day to help us function properly. After that small amount is used up, any extra we consume has no use inside our bodies, so it goes to our fat reserves. Yuck.
  3. Sugar wrecks our teeth. But we already knew that.
  4. Sugar tricks us into not eating other more nutritious foods. As I mentioned before, who wants a real fresh strawberry after you’ve eaten licorice? When we eat sweet treats, we are less hungry for nourishing, whole foods. So our bodies become depleted of nutrients, and we are more likely to get sick (see #1) or fat (see #2).

Well, that wasn’t much fun to read, was it? Never fear…

Cutting back on sugar is possible!

If I can do it, you can do it! Set some small goals for yourself and get started. You’ll be surprised by how one change can lead to another! Ready, set, go!

My Current Favorite Cheat Meal – and How I Make it Healthier

March 6, 2019 by Laura 10 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I have a new favorite cheat meal, and I don’t even feel bad about it.

It was about this time last year that I wrote my Beyond the Free Range Chicken post. In that post, I expressed that while I still love and desire to feed my family as healthy as possible, I’ve learned that it is more important to focus my time and energy outside the kitchen loving people. What’s more important?

  • Raw milk and organic produce? OR
  • Loving God and loving our neighbors?

I’m going to go with The Greatest Commandment.

Learning to Love

Little did I know what God was doing in our lives as He was teaching us to take hold of His commands and the promises of joy that came with them! He’s helping us learn to love better, to see people, and to share the hope He constantly provides. Meanwhile, He moved a 4-year old Bonus Boy into our house. He’s the son of one of the “neighbors we were loving on.” The 4-year old turned 5, and after a few months, it was decided that our family would adopt him.

The busy lives we had been living became much, much busier – but no matter because God has been in every part, perfectly providing everything we need. He’s been showing us during all of this how to let go of what isn’t important for His Kingdom and to fix our eyes more firmly on what He has to offer.

I could share thousands of words about all we are learning. But today, regarding food? Here’s a biggie I’ve learned: Who cares if you sometimes need to eat a less-than-perfect meal if the tradeoff is having more time to share Jesus’ love with others? Pray over the food, throw out the mixed greens or easy veggie to go with it, and trust that God is still providing His best for you.

This leads me to share my current favorite cheat meal. Don’t get too excited. It’s not even something to pass out over.

My Current Favorite Cheat Meal

It’s homemade-ish pizza.

Sure, I can make homemade pizza crust. Here’s the recipe for the days you have time. It’s fabulous. I recommend it. But you know what else I recommend for the days you don’t have time (because you’ve been sharing God’s love with people)?

Pre-made Pizza Crust. Organic…or not. Whole grain…or not. God is bigger, my friends. It’s just a pizza crust. This should not make us lose sleep. God’s purposes for our lives are bigger than the occasional serving of white flour.

I now regularly buy pre-made pizza crusts to keep in my freezer. About once every week, between foster care meetings and court dates and diapers and bottles and therapy appointments, I ask my big boys pull some out and top them as they please. This is our lunch or our dinner and it is so easy!

How do I make it healthier?

First, I don’t stress over it. A peaceful heart is great for one’s health. Second, we pull out mixed greens and eat salad with it. Often fresh fruit too. Again – SO EASY. It’s also fun and tasty, an added bonus.

And there you have it: My favorite cheat meal.

In the tug of war for all that demands our attention, loving people should win every time!

How to EASILY Make Your Favorite Foods Healthier!

Just when you thought eating healthy meant that you could never eat Pizza or French fries again, we’re swooping in to tell you how to easily make all of your favorite foods healthier!

At the beginning of our family’s real food journey, I went from a confident cook to suddenly feeling completely intimidated by my kitchen.

I stood at my pantry looking at my Crisco, white sugar, vegetable oil, Velveeta, and cans of cream soups wondering how I’d possibly re-learn to cook “the real food way.” Even worse, I worried about how I’d afford the high cost of real food.

I worried over how I’d ever get my little boys to eat healthy food. After all, they were used to pop-tarts and white pasta. How willing would they be to try new, better food?

I started our real food changes by tearfully throwing out all the junk. Then I decided to try making Homemade Chicken Nuggets with wholesome ingredients. Maybe that would be a good way to transition my family?

Ah-ha! My kids gobbled them up. Maybe this real food thing wouldn’t be so bad?

As it turns out, I learned quickly that real food is just…food. Thirteen years later I’ve confirmed that it actually isn’t hard to make a real food meal because well, have you ever sliced an apple? Washed a strawberry? Tossed a salad? Cooked a roast?

Real food is just food.

It’s easy to prepare and much to our surprise – it is actually affordable! Healthy food doesn’t actually cost more. I proved it here.

Not sure where to start when it comes to switching from processed food to real food? Wish you had a better idea of what real food substitutions you can make to easily transition your family to eating real foods?

The Day I Proved That Healthy Food DOES NOT Cost More

Today I thought it would be fun to explore whether or not healthy food actually costs more than…how should I say it? Unhealthy food? Would you believe me if I told you that I discovered that most healthy food does not cost more? Some healthy foods actually cost significantly less! Who knew?

I don’t even like to call it healthy and unhealthy food, simply because not every person’s dietary needs are the same. Sometimes what’s healthy for me might not be healthy for you.

So as we talk through this subject, let’s switch the word “healthy” with the word “nourishing.” I always encourage people to focus on eating food that offers nourishment. Don’t just eat edible stuff that fills a hole. Work to eat real food that offers nutrients and provides the body with goodness to thrive.

What is the Perfect Diet for Everyone?

Now back to our initial discussion about the cost of nourishing food vs. the cost of empty calories.

I’ve been crunching some numbers this week because after all my years of working to make a nourishing diet affordable for my family, I still hear so many people talk about how they can’t afford to eat good food. I always cringe at this declaration because I no longer believe it to be true.

Does Healthy Food ACTUALLY Cost More?

In an effort to get to the bottom of this debate, today I decided to compare the prices of basic, real foods to the price of a big box of Goldfish Crackers from Walmart.

Obviously this comparison doesn’t factor in coupon use or off brand options. But spoiler alert: Would you believe me if I told you that an ounce of Goldfish Crackers costs only a little bit less than an ounce of Grass-Fed Organic Hamburger Meat?? This blew me away! Is it possible that we’ve been wrong all these years about the high cost of real food?

Check this out! You’ll be amazed at my findings!

Goldfish Crackers = 30 ounce box for $6.46 = $0.22/ounce

Keep this price point in mind as we look at the costs of other basic, real, nourishing foods most of us love. We’ll start by comparing average costs of favorite fresh fruits and veggies.

Cost of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables

Here’s the breakdown of produce price points I usually shoot for. NOTE: These are the prices I pay. Prices will vary from city to city.

  • Grapes = $2.50/pound or less = $0.16/ounce
  • Apples = $1.50/pound or less = $0.09/ounce
  • Strawberries = $2.30/pound or less = $0.14/ounce
  • Bananas = $0.59/pound or less = $0.04/ounce
  • Carrots = $0.99/pound = $0.06/ounce
  • Cuties = $1.50/pound or less = $0.09/ounce
  • Peaches/Nectarines/Plums = $1.50/pound or less = $0.09/ounce

These are all much lower in cost compared to Goldfish Crackers. How fun is this?!

Cost of Fresh Meat, Milk, Eggs, and Cheese

This was a little bit more difficult to measure as we don’t calculate eggs or milk in pounds. Still, it was interesting to note some price breakdowns of these nourishing foods. Notice how many of these prices are significantly less per ounce compared to Goldfish Crackers! NOTE: These are the prices I pay. Prices will vary from city to city.

  • Free Range Eggs = $2.50/dozen or less = $0.21/egg
  • Cheese = $4.00/pound = $0.25/ounce
  • Raw, Grass Fed Milk = $5.00/gallon = $0.04/ounce
  • Grass Fed Beef = $5.50/pound = $0.34/ounce
  • Naturally Grown Boneless Chicken Thighs = $3.00/pound or less when I see mark-downs = $0.19/ounce
  • Naturally Grown Chicken Legs or Whole Chicken = $2.50/pound or less when I see mark-downs = $0.16/ounce

Wow! Bring on the nourishing, real foods!

Cost of Whole Grains

I typically purchase my grains in bulk through Azure Standard. (Curious how many cups of flour in a pound of wheat? I did the math for you here.)

  • Freshly Ground Organic Wheat Flour = $1.00 per pound = $0.33/cup = $0.06/ounce
  • Organic Brown Rice = $1.10/pound = $0.07/ounce
  • Organic Rolled Oats = $0.87/pound = $0.05/ounce
  • Organic Whole Wheat Pasta = $2.55/pound = $0.16/ounce

Healthy Food Does Not Cost More

With the exception of fresh cheese and grass fed meat, which is only a few cents more per ounce than Goldfish Crackers, we see a lower price on all real, whole foods compared to this empty calorie snack. I am so encouraged by this!

This isn’t to say that we should never eat a goldfish cracker. Some moments in our life call for fun convenience foods! But we should never feel discouraged or defeated about the cost of purchasing wonderful, nourishing food for our family!

I can do it! You can do it!

Are you surprised about these price comparisons? What are some of your favorite inexpensive real foods?

What is the Perfect Diet for Everyone?

April 3, 2018 by Laura 18 Comments

I just wrote at length to share why my family eats a diet high in fat. The question is, is a high fat diet right for everyone? Is there one perfect diet for everyone?

During the past thirteen years, I’ve made healthy food my profession. I’m passionate about the subject and spend hours of time reading and learning from a variety of credible sources. Then I come up with recipes that are simple, tasty, and nourishing. Fun!

After all this time, I still find research that declares all fat to be unhealthy, especially saturated fat. I still find research that declares artificial sweeteners (like splenda and aspertame) to be a healthy option. I still find research that shows a diet high in white flour and white sugar to be heart-healthy. The trouble with these articles is that they don’t have credible data (in my opinion) to back their claims and ironically, most of these articles are written in an effort to promote synthetic drugs or manufactured “food” products.

Why have I concluded that a fats like butter and coconut oil, beef and eggs – all foods that are high in saturated fat – are healthy and beneficial? Read my thoughts about that here. But now the question of the hour…

What is the perfect diet for everyone?

Should we all eat high fat? Should we all go low carb? Is it best that we all cut out gluten? Perhaps we should all adopt the “everything in moderation” idea?

After all my years of research, and more importantly, after years of discussions with a variety of people with different needs and body types, I believe the perfect diet for everyone is:

The diet that nourishes.

The perfect diet for everyone is the one that nourishes.

I have friends who have serious health issues when consuming gluten. I know people who have to stay away from eggs and nuts entirely. I have met people who tell me that if they ate as much fat as I eat they would bloat and be miserable. I have a friend who has a fructose intolerance so all the healthy fruits in the world aren’t at all healthy for her.

Each person must determine what their body needs, what their body can handle, and what will keep them healthy and strong.

But if we aren’t eating food that nourishes, whether it is low carb, high fat, grain free, or otherwise, no matter our dietary needs or restrictions, we still aren’t offering our bodies food for good health.

As for my family, we can eat whole grains, dairy, fruits and vegetables, meat, eggs, and plenty of good, healthy fats. These foods keep us strong, energetic, and nourished. As for you and yours? Only you can determine what is healthy.

But remember: Healthy Food = Nourishing Food.

All the conflicting research we find might have us confused about what it really means to eat a healthy diet. And all the “my family eats this way and so should you” information we read can have us in a puddle of confusion.

So do your homework, and consider what nourishes. Learn what provides your family with energy, brain power, good health. Focus on eating food full of nutrients.

And one last thought:

Don’t feel bad about the occasional splurge. With all my talk about feeding my family real food that nourishes, you should know that sometimes we buy ice cream or chips from the store as a special treat and we don’t even feel bad about it. I don’t agree with the “everything in moderation” idea, because I think that lends itself to the mindset of eating whatever you want as long as you don’t overeat. This doesn’t necessarily promote a nourishing diet as an overall lifestyle. But eating a nourishing diet most of the time while occasionally splurging on a treat? You bet!

Now I’d like to hear from you! What kind of diet is nourishing for you and your family?
