But Really, I Wasn’t Scared

January 6, 2010 by Laura 24 Comments

What is up with me encountering critters in my house? First the snake and now this.

I will say, right from the start, that having a snake in my house was a MUCH worse experience than this one. This one was mostly just funny and made my children laugh at me.

Early last week the boys and I took down our Christmas tree and decorations and boxed them up to store until next year. We keep all of our Christmas decor up in our attic, along with a various assortment of dust and dirt.

The boys hauled all of the boxes upstairs and put them at the base of the attic stairs. I was then planning to take the boxes up the steep steps into the attic.

So picture this:  Four boys (fairly bored, disinterested and relieved to be finished with packing up decorations) gathered around 6-8 boxes all of various sizes and shapes at the base of a set of stairs leading up to an attic. One mom (also very relieved to be finished with packing up decorations and ready to move on with life) picking up one of the boxes to begin the trek up the stairs to deposit the goods. Sounds innocent enough wouldn’t you think? Kinda makes you want to yawn, doesn’t it?

I opened the attic door and carried Box Number 1 up exactly five steps before abruptly being greeted by loud flapping wings and a beak flying toward my face.

I yelled something intelligent like, “Aaauughhh!”, simultaneously jumped down all five steps in one leap and landed smack in the middle of my four boys and all the remaining boxes.

Oh, and I also slammed the door to the attic while I was leaping…all while still holding Box Number 1.

I have to say, the whole act was quite impressive and heroic.

The boys looked quite stunned at first, because well…this was not part of our yearly Christmas storage tradition.

It was then quite obvious that while they really wanted to make sure I was unharmed…they also really wanted to laugh. I’m also pretty sure they wanted to take a turn at the “go up five steps then leap back down while slamming a door” trick. Both of those activities are against the rules of the house…and to do them both at once? Cool.

I believe my oldest was the first to find his voice,  “What was THAT about?” he tried to ask without smirking.

“THAT,” I told my boys, “Was a bird flying at my face. Don’t worry, I wasn’t really scared. I just didn’t want the bird to fly down and get into the house, because do you know how hard it would be to get a bird out of our house? That’s why I jumped down so quickly and slammed the door.”

We had a nice laugh together, then left the boxes at the foot of the stairs for my husband to deal with later.

Best part of the story:  My father-in-law was visiting at the time. I went downstairs and, still a little out of breath from the whole experience said, “Hey, did you hear me yell and jump and wonder what was going on up there? There was a bird in the attic that flew at my face!”

My father-in-law just looked at me, quite interested and impressed with the situation.

Then he asked just as seriously as can be,  “What kind of bird was it?”

;)

Exercise?

January 5, 2010 by Laura 65 Comments

I told you that I didn’t make any New Year’s Resolutions or set any specific goals for the year. However, I really do want to try to exercise more often.

I wish I enjoyed exercising more than I do. I often use my asthma as an excuse not to exercise…but ultimately I know that consistent exercise would be good for my lungs.

My other really good excuse for not exercising is that I live in Nebraska and being outside for any activity other than scraping ice off of the windshield is not really possible for about six months out of the year.

If I had to pick a favorite form of exercise, it would be my mini trampoline. I can use it inside, any day of the year (as opposed to this one, but boy that sure was fun). It’s easy on my knees and shins…it’s good for the immune system. It actually feels pretty good. WHY do I not used it regularly? I don’t know.

Have any exercise advice for me? Are you good at exercising? What is your favorite form of indoor exercise? What time of day do you exercise? How in the world do you motivate yourself to exercise regularly?

Hey, actually….does typing count as exercise? I am pretty fast at it and do it quite regularly. How about switching out laundry? Running up and down the stairs a million times a day to get what I need? Aha! I’ve got it!  Nertz! I can totally work up a sweat playing Nertz!

And here I thought I didn’t get enough exercise.

Okay, but really…any advice on the above questions would be great.

Gratituesday: Time to Relax

gratituesdaynov09

For most people, school starts back up this week. Before Christmas, I hadn’t really made a plan about when we’d begin and end our Christmas break. I usually just kind of wing it, based on where the kids are in their math books and what kind of break I need.

We schooled right up until Christmas Eve…then decided to call it break-time.  Grandpa was here, Shannen was here, other company was here (off and on), the holidays were here, the snow kept falling, the kids got sick. Now that things are slowing down (everything except for the falling snow it seems)…I feel like slowing down and taking a break that actually feels like a break!

Therefore, I had a meeting with our school superintendent (aka, Daddy) and we decided to take one more week off from formal schooling. We’re ahead for the year anyway. Besides…half of what the boys have been doing these past couple of weeks have involved learning.

They’ve been cooking, we’ve played tons of games that involve counting and adding and decision making, they’ve researched and taken apart electronics (with Daddy) to try to fix them. They’ve even been writing and creating “movies” with the video part of my digital camera. Interspersed with all of these activities, we’ve been snuggling under blankets reading together, playing thinking games….

The official math books and history books can wait until next week. We’re taking a longer “break”…and wow are we enjoying it!

Thank you God for this wonderful time to relax with my family!

Becoming a Better Help Meet to Your Husband

January 3, 2010 by Laura 71 Comments

helpmeet

It has been placed on my heart to write a series about how we can each be a better help meet to our husbands.

You can be assured that as I felt God urging me to write it…I tried very hard to argue with Him (which we all know is always so very effective).

My arguments included:

  • Don’t I need to be some super-wife to write a series like that?
  • Don’t I need to wait until my  husband and I have been married for like 147 years or so before I write something like that?
  • Don’t I need to have a special degree in marriage and family and blissful marital bondedness?
  • Don’t I need to wait until I’ve learned to always be gracious and sweet and loving and patient and I don’t know…nearly perfect…to write a series like that?
  • And what about that one very specific thing that God created only for married people to do? You know what I’m talking about? Mmhmm…that. I’ve never mentioned that on my blog. How am I supposed to talk about that? If I do this series, I’ll have to address that a time or two since that is a pretty important part of marriage and being a help meet.

After much arguing…the score chalked up to be:

Laura – Zero, start typing.
God – One, but don’t worry I’ll help you.

And so, it is with much prayer and humility that I begin this series.

I know that not all of you are married yet. I know that some of you are divorced or widowed. I know that some of you are in difficult marriages. I know that some of you might disagree with part of what I share.

Please understand that I’m writing what God has put on my heart. I’m writing only from my experiences. I’m writing without any training or degree in this area. I’m writing based on what I’ve read in God’s Word. I’m writing as one dishpan-handed wife to another.

I’m writing because our marriages are sacred and holy. Our marriages deserve to be preserved, honored, rescued and treasured.

What better way to Make our Homes Heavenly than through our marriages!

I have one word for you from here in Nebraska:

BRR.

It is freezing, the snow doesn’t ever stop, the wind chill is painful and ice is everywhere. I’m cold.  I’m coping by doing a lot of baking. That, and doing a lot of dishes in very hot water. Both are great ways to keep warm.

The kids keep asking when I’m going to make snow ice cream. There certainly is plenty of snow for it. I just can’t make myself do it yet. Maybe as soon it warms up to double digits?

Here’s our menu this week:

Sunday, January 3
Breakfast cookies, applesauce
Venison stew, cornbread
Hamburgers, baby carrots, ranch potato wedges

Monday, January 4
Chocolate chocolate chip muffins, bananas
Grilled cheese sandwiches, tomato soup
Taco potatoes, fruit salad

Tuesday, January 5
Fried eggs on toast, oranges
Salmon patties, creamy mac and cheese, peas
Roasted chicken, carrots and potatoes, gravy

Wednesday, January 6
Simple soaked pancakes
Bean dip and chips, fresh pineapple
Three cheese garlic chicken pasta, green beans

Thursday, January 7
Warm vanilla soother, sourdough toast, pears
Potato soup, baby carrots
Chicken fried steak strips, mashed potatoes and gravy, steamed broccoli

Friday, January 8
Scrambled eggs with cheese, clementines
Beef and cheese burritoes, peaches
Feeding the YC Track Team:  Lasagna, tossed salad, garlic bread, cookie tray

Saturday, January 9
Whole wheat funnel cakes
Leftover buffet
Beefy vegetable soup, homemade soft pretzels

Now for the little announcement:

Our family works to eat a pretty healthy diet. We  have four kids (some of whom are picky) and we live on a modest income. We are asked all the time, “How do you afford to eat these healthy foods?!”

If you’re looking to eat healthier this year but feel overwhelmed with where to start and how you can afford healthier foods…I hope you’ll join me beginning this week when I begin sharing how our family started on the road toward healthier eating in a series called, “Our Healthy Eating Journey”.

Psst…tonight, I  announced another new series I’m prayerfully considering! Be sure to check it out!

New Year’s Resolution or Winging It? Question #53

January 1, 2010 by Laura 14 Comments

Happy January 1, 2010!

The big talk everywhere is about New Year’s Resolutions. Even though I’ve been hearing the talk about it, I never gave it much thought until today. I think I was too busy scrubbing the crud off the top of my refrigerator.

Resolutions? Goals for the year? I still haven’t made any.

I don’t know why.

I feel like a work in progress right now. In addition, I feel like my kids are a BIG work in progress right now…at PRIME ages (5-12) to really encourage godly attitudes and spiritual growth.

So I don’t have any specific goals.

I have some ideas that I’m praying about involving this site and what I’d like to share with you and create this year. I also have some specific parenting issues on my heart regarding what my husband and I should be focusing on with the kids.

Beyond that…I feel like I’m just taking life a day at a time right now. Not because anything bad or difficult is going on. Actually…life is fantastic and full and wonderful right now. But, I didn’t set any goals last year and found that God had plenty of amazing goals and ideas of His own for me and for our family. I kinda feel like just praying about the year and then listening to the direction God takes us.

What about you? Did you set goals for yourself this year? Do you feel God placing any specific plans and goals on your heart for you and your family during the upcoming months? Or are you just kinda winging it, like me?

Learn About Laura: Down Time

December 30, 2009 by Laura 24 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Julie in Australia asked, “I am wondering whether you take time to yourself? You give me the impression that this is not a “need” in your life in so far as you obviously love spending time with the boys each day and your husband. However, how do you unwind? Do you enjoy time by yourself or do you find the time with your family is where you find yourself re-energised”

Oh yes…I am an introvert through and through. I very much feel the need for alone time each day. I spend a lot of time with people and I love it…but it does make me tired.

I never get tired of my husband because he just isn’t home enough to get tired of. ;)    But my boys? I don’t need NEARLY the breaks from them that I used to need when they were all teeny tiny at the same time and hanging on my legs and hanging on my sleeves and hanging on my…well…you know…when they were nursing. {ehem}

When they were all little bitty, any quiet time I could get was wonderful and so, so needed. Now that they’re older and not so dependent on me, I don’t feel quite the need to “get away from it all”. Do you hear that, Moms of Little Bitties? It will get EASIER!!!  Wahoo!

All that being said…I do still need to have some down time each day (if possible) to just “feel the quiet”. I need to be able to have some time to not answer any questions or make any decisions or work anyone through an argument with a brother.

You might be happy to know that my “down time” is almost always my blogging time. My blog is my hobby, business, ministry and “down time” all wrapped up in one! How great is that?

When I’m writing…I am all alone in my own little writing world. Well, all alone except for all of you…but bless you…you are all incredibly well behaved and quiet.

This usually happens for me in the afternoons while the boys have their reading time/play time/TV time. Sometimes I have a little more time after the boys go to bed and if Matt is working the late shift.

Crazy as it may sound…whenever I happen to have the entire house to myself (like if Matt’s at work and the boys are all playing at a friend’s house)…I almost always choose to work on my website or ebooks or articles. Part of that is because I always have work waiting for me and emails to answer…so a quiet moment means uninterrupted and guilt free work time. Plus, I LOVE it. Every once in a blue moon, I let myself read a good Christian fiction novel.

I used to feel selfish because I needed some time to unwind all alone with everyone “out of my face”. I believe that if we take the “me time” idea too far…it does become selfish. But…if you are the kind of person (like me) who needs quiet and alone time to re-gain your energy…that’s not selfish. It’s smart.

So…what do the rest of you do for “down time” whenever you happen to have some?

Learn About Laura: Cooking, Careers and Parenting Confessions

December 29, 2009 by Laura 7 Comments

Jen B asked:  Where did you get your mad cooking skills from? Were you always a wonderful cook?

I’ve just ALWAYS loved cooking. I was always looking through cookbooks and cooking magazines and experimenting with recipes when I was growing up.

I come from a long line of wonderful cooks. My mom was a great cook. Both of my grandmothers were good cooks. My aunts are all wonderful cooks.

My mom enjoyed cooking (although maybe not quite as much as I love it and consider it to be a hobby). I loved cooking with my mom and with my grandma. I shared more of my cooking memories in this post if you’d like to read more.

And no, I made many cooking mistakes back when I was a beginner (still do of course). Did I ever tell you about the first time I made gravy for Matt on our sixth month dating anniversary? He had to spread it onto his meat and potatoes with a butter knife. I am SO glad he married me anyway.

Kathy Shaner said:  Speaking as one who had years of the single life with a great career, then marriage at 40– I wonder what career you would have pursued if you’d gone that direction? Maybe I should know this after reading all about Laura, but I don’t. What ‘outside’ interests have captured your attention and might have launched a career if you hadn’t built a life with your wonderful family?

I got a degree in Elementary Education and taught first grade for a very short time in a Public School before our oldest was born.

Growing up, I always told my mom that when I grew up I wanted to be a mom, a teacher, a baker and a hair cutter person.

How great is it that I now get to be everything I always wanted to be when I grew up?! (Never in a million years though did I ever dream I’d also have a website.  That might have had something to do with the fact that computers hardly existed yet…)

I suppose if I would have continued in a career, I would have continued teaching school. That all seems like another life to me now…the days when I taught school. Good memories…but I’m so, so happy with what I’m doing now. Although, I will say…I miss having a janitor. :)

Becca Banana asked:  What do you wish you had known about marriage and/or parenting before learning lessons the hard way?

Oh my goodness sakes…how long do you have?

Regarding marriage…I actually am planning to write a little series addressing some of these things…so if it’s okay, I’ll save that topic for a few weeks from now.

What I wish I would have known about parenting? What I wish I could change?

I really, really didn’t know that my kids would be naughty very often. I really thought my  household would always be blissful and calm and my children would always behave and be clean and never have crusty noses. I was very organized and on top of things (before marriage and motherhood) and my children were going to be practically perfect except for a tiny little episode that they might have once every six months or so. And only then if they were sick.

Because that didn’t really happen (not even close)…I was pretty hard on Asa (our oldest) and didn’t always respond to his challenging two year old (and three year old and four year old) normal behaviors the way I should have. I sort of expected him to “perform”, if that makes any sense.

I wish I would have understood then that parenting is constant “Godly character training”…not “create perfect people so everyone will think you’re a great parent” training.

Also, when we started homeschooling I thought I needed to be a Nazi about schoolwork so that I’d have the smartest kids ever. I almost made Asa hate school by the time he was six. I backed off a WHOLE lot, and by the time he turned ten, I had finally convince him that it really was okay to miss a math problem or spell a word wrong.

Our schooling is SO much more relaxed now. Guess what? They’re still smart. Go figure. Of course, “smart” is relative. ;)

Ultimate Gratituesday 2009!

gratituesdaynov09

Welcome to the very last Gratituesday of 2009! I’m so excited for all of us to have a chance to reflect on our year and on all the ways God took care of our needs during the year.

It’s good to look back at the entire year isn’t it? When I think about what I’m thankful for each week during Gratituesday, it’s always great to choose a specific blessing from God in the past few days. But, looking back over the entire year? It’s quite breath taking. And incredibly humbling.

I believe what I’m most grateful for is how God has grown our family into new ministries this year. I mentioned here about how God is using our home for ministry like he never has before. I love how He continues to put guests at our table, and continues to provide plenty food in our pantry (freezer, fridge, etc.) to share. It’s been amazing to experience.  I love that our children are naturally learning hospitality. I love that the six of us together are able to bless others while being WONDERFULLY blessed right back!

I love looking back at the ways our marriage and our boys have grown this year. While we have “real moments” all the time…our marriage continues to grow stronger and our boys are turning into awesome young men.

And, as I mentioned last week, I’m so thankful for the job God has provided for Matt and that he loves what he’s doing. I wish I had the space to share all the ways God led us in his perfect timing to this job during the past two years.
———————————————————–

What ways have you felt God’s incredible presence during 2009? What ways has God blessed your family and how has He provided?

Please share!!  Write your own Ultimate Gratituesday post on your blog and come link up here. If you don’t have a blog, please be sure to leave a comment to let us know how God has blessed you during the year!

Let’s celebrate God’s goodness together!

Learn About Laura: Movies, Make-Up and Vacations

December 27, 2009 by Laura 17 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

This post is the first of several that will answer your questions here.  :)

Josette said:  You always make me laugh…so I am thinking your sense of humor is the same as mine (I could be totally wrong), just wondering what your favorite “funny movie” is?

I am SO SORRY that this is the most boring answer ever and surely not the one you were hoping for.

I can’t even think of the name of any funny movie. Although Veggie Tale movies always crack me up. Love the humor in those. I’m guessing that’s not quite what you meant?

Watching movies is one of my least favorite activities. I don’t know why. I don’t like sitting still for that long (unless I’m blogging/writing or reading a good book).

I’ve been racking my brain trying to figure out what my favorite funny movie is. I even asked Matt, “Hey, what’s my favorite funny movie?” Blank stare.  Yeah, he likes movies as much as I do.

Isn’t that pitiful?

Why don’t you all tell me what YOUR favorite funny movies are and maybe I’ll watch them and say, “AH!! That WAS funny!!!”

What great movies am I missing out on?!?

Sharon asked:  What skin care products and make-up (if you wear it), do you use? Where do you purchase it?

You can read about my favorite Soaps and Sundries here. Otherwise…there isn’t too much more to tell.

Here is my daily skin care routine:  I wash my face with Tropical Traditions coconut soap. I then rub on some Tropical Traditions lotion. The end.

On Sundays and special occasions, I go all out and wear mascara (just the gross stuff from Walmart).

I used to never leave the house without make-up thinking that I could never get away without “having my face on”. Now (mostly because my husband really doesn’t care for me to wear make-up because he really – thankfully – likes my natural look) I just don’t wear it. I LOVE not messing with it.

If any of you have any natural make-up products you’d recommend…do tell!

Dani asked:  What is your favorite vacation memory with your family and what are your vacation traditions? Especially in the car with FOUR boys.

Well, we have never actually gone on a vacation that doesn’t involve a family get-together of some sort. At this point though…those are the best kind of vacations.

Every other year we travel to California to visit Matt’s family. We’ve been able to go to Disneyland several times thanks to Matt’s brother who works for The Mouse (that would be Mickey).

It always cracks us up when we go to CA in the wintertime. Everyone there is wearing a long wool coat and apologizing that we had to come out for a visit “when it’s SO cold”. Yep, that 50° to 70° weather is just a killer on us Nebraskans. We hardly know what to do with ourselves without the wind chill factor.

Oh, and the day after Christmas several cousins always like to plan a trip to drive three hours to the snow!!!! ‘Cause wouldn’t that be fun to play in snow together?

Yes, I suppose it would if we didn’t have to “play in the snow” with a shovel in order to get out of our driveway on a regular basis. Couldn’t we just not drive to the snow and play together in the yard? In a t-shirt?

Other than those fine pieces of vacation information…I’ve got nothin’. Unless you count this trip… Yeah, that was a good one.

As far as traveling in a car with four boys…you can just imagine the musical numbers I must put up with.  Need I say more?
