Our Home School Schedule(ish) for 2010-2011

August 26, 2010 by Laura 13 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I hold to our schedule lightly in order to keep myself sane. Well, close to sane as the case may be. I thought I’d try to share with you what our daily schedule sort of looks like….although it really isn’t a schedule. It’s hardly even an order of events. This will just be a little glimpse into what our days look like if we don’t have a field trip or a PE class or a leaky dishwasher or a hang nail.

(In case you’re interested, here’s a look at our schedule for 2009-2010 and our schedule for 2008-2009.)

And now for 2010-2011…

Our schedule has changed from year to year, but one thing has stayed the same:  We always read the Bible at breakfast. We LOVE starting our kids’ day like this. We are currently reading a chapter of Matthew together, then reading a section from Why Pray?  (Why Pray? is a GREAT read by the way!)  Our older boys also read their Bibles on their own each morning before they come downstairs for breakfast.

why_pray

After breakfast/Bible reading begins a general organized hubbub. If possible, I sit down with Justus and Elias right after breakfast and read History and work through Spelling words. (You can see a list of their books and curriculum here.)  Malachi (Kindergarten) heads off to play Legos or super heros or army guys or something else very manly. Asa begins his reading assignments for the day. He works on his own for most of the morning, making his way through his history books, literature and math. Once I’ve finished History and Spelling with Justus and Elias, they do their individual work (handwriting, math, phonics, vocabulary).

IF by chance all the boys are working on their own without trouble at this point of the morning (of course I am available to answer questions at any time), I will start some laundry, wash some dishes, have a conversation with my husband (joy!), cook something, or scrub some unidentified gooey substance from the kitchen floor.

If I can, I try to put a big, nice meal on the table for lunch. Matt often works evenings, so I want to send him off with a healthy meal. I am finding that having good pre-made food in the freezer is a HUGE help for me since I don’t always have time to cook a big meal from start to finish during school time. Pulling something from the freezer and throwing some veggies on the table with it has been a life saver!!

While we’re eating lunch, Matt works with us on memory verses. Have I ever written about how we do “repeat afters”?  Why have I not ever written about how we do “repeat afters”?  I’ll put that on my list. It’s so simple, yet so effective.

While we’re doing “repeat afters”, I stuff my lunch down. Then, while the boys are still eating (because eating is an art form for them), I will read from our latest science book, then from our latest “read-aloud” book. They generally finish eating while I’m reading, but we all just sit around the table enjoying the books. I LOVE reading during meal times!!!

After lunch, before the boys scatter…we’ll do a quick grammar lesson (Grammar Ace) or art lesson (Mark Kistler’s Draw Squad). After that, I sit with Asa and help him finish his History, Spelling and Science lessons. This has been a really great time with my teenager! While I’m doing this with Asa, Justus and Elias set the timer for 25 minutes and sit down in a quiet room to read. Malachi has gone back to his Legos again.

Somewhere in there, we send Matt off to work (or soccer practice, depending on the day). Then finally, I call Malachi in to do his school work. I don’t do every subject with him every day. I don’t find it necessary. The main thing is that he gets it all done eventually…and he’s getting some one-on-one time with Mama.

Now keep in mind that this order of events is how an “ideal” day looks. I’m actually finding that by staying very laid back about our schedule has helped all of us stay stress-free during the day! Sometimes we’re still finishing up some of our lessons at 8 pm. Sometimes we don’t get everything finished and have to carry our work over to the next day.

I have given up assigning a “time schedule” to our days. I pretty much HATED having a schedule that said, “Science 9:00-9:30; History 9:30-10:00…” We could NEVER stick to a schedule like that (read here if you want to know why) and it always made me a Frantic Freaked-Out Mama. NO ONE wants to do school work with a Frantic Freaked-Out Mama!  Not even me.

I think that the main point is to just get everything done (mostly) and to keep the most important things the most important things. I don’t want my kids to remember school days with a Frantic Freaked-Out Mama. I want them to remember “repeat afters” and reading with Mama while they eat lunch and snuggling on the couch to learn about Abraham Lincoln.

We get it all done somehow…so it doesn’t really matter what time the clock says, does it?

Homeschool Hubbub: Flexibility is Good

August 13, 2010 by Laura 17 Comments

Interested to know what a perfect day looks like at our house while we follow the awesome organized schedule I have set up for us? Yeah, me too. I’ll be sure to let you know what that looks like just as soon as we have one of those.

Want to know what a real day looks like at our house? Now that I can tell you about. Messy, loud, fun, frustrating, silly, scattered, satisfying…those are the kinds of days we usually have. Schedule? Yes we have one…just because we have to have SOMETHING to go by so that we can accomplish SOMETHING. But if I were to force us each day to stick to the exact schedule…I would make all of our lives miserable. Especially my own.

I’ve learned through these past eight years of homeschooling to keep our days flexible. To write down what I’d like a school day to look like and then to follow the plan loosely. Because just about the time I finally get all of my children in the room at the same time, settle them comfortably into their spots on the couches with pillows, wait for all of them to look up expectantly at me so that I can begin reading an enlightening chapter from our latest history book…someone is going to have to go to the bathroom.

And while that someone is in the bathroom, another someone will remember that he forgot his pencil but on his way to go get it he will see the Lego man on the steps that he had been missing and then he will accusingly ask which of his other brothers left the Lego man on the stairs when clearly Lego men are not allowed out of the Lego room because this is how we lose Lego people and the other brothers (the ones that are not in the bathroom) will run to see which Lego man it is and then they will all go to the Lego room, forget all about history and start to build a space ship.

In the meantime, the phone will ring with a call I can’t ignore and by the time I can corral them all back into the living room for history a good forty-five minutes will have passed and we’ll all finally get settled back down again…just in time for someone else to need to go to the bathroom.

These are the days of our lives.

I work very hard to keep our school days free of outside appointments, and I almost never answer the phone while we’re schooling…but sometimes things can come up that are out of my control. We have to roll with it. (No, boys!  I did not say that you could roll and wrestle all over the art materials which are on the floor…I meant roll with the schedule! Get off the sketchbooks!!!)

Somehow our children are learning in spite of all of the “life” that is going on around us.

Hey, it would appear that “life” is what they need to be learning about anyway.

Well, I’m so glad I worked that into the schedule. ;)

Menu Plan for the Week, Plus This Year’s Corn “Party”

August 8, 2010 by Laura 33 Comments

I warned them.  On my way out the door to the farmer’s market Thursday evening I told the boys that I was hoping to come home with a big load of corn so they’d better get their shucker game face on.

At the market, I walked right up to my favorite organic food grower, took a look at her corn and said, “Can I have all of it (please)?!”

She’s always great to work with, I trust how she grows her food and she is very fair with her pricing. In fact, she only charged me for 10 dozen ears, when in fact she sent me home with over 13 dozen!! That’s a stinkin’ lot of corn.

I’m still sore.

corn_4

The boys helped me lug it out of the van (Matt was at work so he missed all the fun!) and they went to town shucking while I started boiling water in my big stock pot.

And they shucked. And they shucked. (13 dozen is no less than 156 ears of corn. They did the math.)

corn_5

Just for fun, check out these pictures from their shucking time two years ago. They are so much bigger now. Wow.

corn_1

In case you’re wondering, you can read about the process of freezing corn here. I did invest in a cool Kernel Cutter from Pampered Chef this year and it was GREAT to work with! So much better than a regular knife!

corn_2

Yes, I thought you’d like to see the gigantic mess I made in the kitchen that night. Not pictured:  My hair looking like a half-shucked corn cob.  By the way, did you know that corn is very, very sticky? Just so ya know.

corn_3

I’m happy to report that I got 61 bags of corn for all of this work!!! That’s enough for the whole year, so I am officially checking “put up corn” off my list!! Hallelujah! (You can read more about the Seal-a-Meal I used here.)  The cost for all of that ends up being about 66¢/bag for the freshest, sweetest, organic-est corn there is…woohoo!

In other news, I made a big peach cobbler (recipe found here) with some of our Michigan peaches. Oh, it is so much fun to surprise my husband with his favorite treat. The kids didn’t mind either.

peach_cobbler

Cooking Ahead for August

August 4, 2010 by Laura 33 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

It’s coming…and I’m bracing myself. I’ve been doing everything I can to prepare and be organized so that I won’t be stressed and short tempered with my boys. Not that I would ever be short tempered with my boys. Ugh, I do try not to be short tempered with my precious angels who leave their stinky shoes in the middle of my kitchen floor so that I can stub my toe on them while I’m trying to cook and fill their constantly hungry bellies. I try.

So what’s coming, you ask? Just a very busy couple of months, that’s all. August and September are two months of very, very hard work while I do a lot of canning and preserving in the midst of beginning our school year and running to lots of soccer games. I absolutely love this time of year, but it can sometimes get hectic.

As soon as I finished writing and putting together Learn Your Letters, Learn to Serve Curriculum Kit, I saw that I had about three weeks before we were going to start our school year. (We like to start in early August at our house.)  I decided that during the last part of July, I would prepare a bunch of freezer foods, stock up on items like canned salmon and tuna for easy meals and order meat from our local farm source so that I’d have a full freezer and plenty of meal options. I even pulled out Do the Funky Kitchen and read it again so that I could get my kitchen organized an in order! Anything that I could do ahead of time to prepare for this busy season, I did. I think. I’m pretty sure I forgot a few things.

Anyway, my pantry and freezers are well stocked so that putting meals on the table during the next few weeks will be easy and quick. I am excited now to begin a new school year with the boys! (More details on our school year coming soon.)

Here are some pictures of the food I prepared and froze during the last part of July:

strawberry_bread

Strawberry Bread – Pictured above is the unbaked version. Isn’t it a pretty pink?!

mini_pizzas

Mini Pizzas, using this Pizza Pockets recipe…
I’ll be able to just pop a few of these into our toaster oven to bake up while we finish our morning school-work.

freezer_cooking_august

Whole Wheat Waffles – ready to be re-heated in our toaster oven for a quick breakfast or dinner.

freezer_cooking_august_3

Whole Wheat Sourdough Biscuits – I may use these for turkey/cheese melts…or I may grab some turkey sausage I have pre-made in the freezer to make some quick gravy to pour over them. NOBODY would complain if I made biscuits and gravy. :)

freezer_cooking_august_4

Sloppy Joes and Meat and Cheese Burritos

freezer_food_august

Whole Wheat and Honey Zucchini Bread

In addition, I’ve got these items stashed in my freezer:

  • Soft Pretzels
  • Giant Breakfast Cookies
  • Lasagna Casserole
  • Bean and Cheese Burritos
  • Popcorn Chicken
  • Turkey Sausage
  • Hashbrowns

I also started a new gallon sized batch of Homemade Vanilla, which as you can see, will be finished “extracting” in January! I didn’t get “carded” this time when I was buying my gallon of vodka. Sniff.  Do you think that means I look older than 21 now? ;)

freezer_cooking_august_2

Call me a nerd (go ahead – you know you want to), but I purchased a whole bunch of canning lids and put all of my canning supplies into a basket and put the basket on top of my fridge. That way, I know where everything is and I have it all ready to go each time I’m ready to can a new batch of something. I may be one of the only people who think that canning supplies in a basket is…cute.

canning_supplies

Okay, so food (lots and lots of food)? Check.  Schoolbooks? Check. Canning supplies? Check.

Oh good grief…where are the soccer cleats?

I knew I forgot something.

Menu Plan for the Week

June 13, 2010 by Laura 4 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Between having lots of company and doing lots of traveling this summer…I have decided that my “menu plan” for the next few weeks needs to look a little bit different than it normally does. While I love to be organized, especially when it comes to feeding guests, sometimes a girl needs to be able to fly by the seat of her pants. Whatever that looks like.

Seriously, who comes up with these phrases? Go ahead…picture me. Flying. By the seat of my pants. In my kitchen. I’ll likely konk my shoulder on the corner of a cabinet door, ram my head into a watermelon and land with my elbow in the butter dish in the process, but whatever.

Instead of outlining my meals day by day…I’ve just made a list of meal and snack ideas to draw from. That way, depending on what each day holds, how many people I’m feeding, or what activity we’re running off to…I can pick and choose what food will work best for each day.

Breakfast Ideas:

  • Whole Wheat Sourdough Biscuits with fruit
  • Strawberry Shortcake (yes, for breakfast…look how healthy it is!!)
  • Giant Breakfast Cookies
  • Orange Muffins
  • Scrambled Eggs, Smoothies
  • Creamy Orange Cooler

orangejulius2sm

Lunch and Dinner Ideas:

  • Taco Potatoes
  • Italian Roast Wraps
  • Black Bean Salsa with Kettle corn chips
  • Creamy Mac and Cheese
  • Lambburgers
  • Pizza
  • Chicken Fried Steak Strips
  • Spicy Avodado Dip
  • Rice and Veggie Stir Fry
  • Taco Salad
  • Build your own Sub Sandwich

Snack Ideas:

  • Watermelon
  • Popcorn
  • Chewy Granola Bars
  • Katie’s Tater Skin Crispies
  • Katie’s Power Bars
  • Cheese and Crackers*

*I was so excited for the folks at Triscuit Home Farming to send me two boxes of their crackers, plus a $20 gift card to purchase supplies to plant herbs from the Plantable Seed Cards inside each box! Did you know that herb seeds come tucked away in each box of Triscuits!?  I’ve got my supplies and will be planting my herbs this week and will patiently await my fresh basil and fresh dill!!! Thanks Triscuit Home Farming! Mmmm…fresh basil!

Menu Plan for the Week

June 6, 2010 by Laura 9 Comments

I suppose it goes without saying that we’ll be eating a lot of strawberries and salad this week. I’m experimenting with a healthy strawberry shortcake recipe today that I can hopefully share soon in the Healthy Celebrations series!

And speaking of healthy…um…or not so healthy…take note of what we’re having for lunch Tuesday. It’s Asa’s birthday, which means he gets to choose everything we eat that day. He hesitantly asked if we could please have ramen noodles.  Blech.  Okay, since it’s your birthday. Can’t be worse than hot dogs. I find it funny that he thinks of ramen noodles as a treat! And um…$0.18/pack? WHAT is this stuff made of? Never mind.  I don’t want to know.

In other news, we have an extra little boy “moving in with us” for a few weeks off and on all summer. Remember the red head? We love having him here! Plus, some friends from out of town arrived last night to stay for the week. We’re in for some busy, fun days!!

Here’s what we’ll be eating:

Sunday, June 6
Strawberry bread, bananas
Pizza casserole, tossed salad, strawberry shortcake
Grilled cheese sandwiches, strawberries and cream, carrot sticks

Monday, June 7
Scrambled eggs, turkey sausage, creamy orange cooler
Taco salad, fresh pineapple
Grilled hamburgers on whole wheat buns, potato salad, peas

Tuesday, June 8 (Asa’s birthday choices)
Whole wheat cinnamon rolls, fruit
Chicken strips, ramen noodles, pineapple, strawberries
Southside Grille, lemon pound cake, ice cream

Wednesday, June 9
Strawberry crepes with whipped cream
Picnic lunch at the park – sandwiches, fruit, chips
Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans

Thursday, June 10
Chocolate chip pancakes, applesauce
Creamy mac and cheese, steamed broccoli
Homemade pizza, tossed salad

Friday, June 11
Strawberry peach slushie, peanut butter honey toast
Tuna salad on crispy cheese crackers, cantaloupe
Tacos on homemade tortillas, watermelon

Saturday, June 12
Whole wheat donuts, fruit
Chicken quesadillas, apple slices
Rice and veggie stir fry with chicken, zucchini, carrots and broccoli

Snacks to have on hand or to make for our guests:

  • Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins
  • Chewy Granola Bars
  • Soft Pretzels
  • Strawberry Milkshake

March Freezer Cooking Report (aka My Baggies of Food Photo Album)

March 1, 2010 by Laura 35 Comments

Well now, there’s just something so satisfying about seeing a bunch of prepared food in baggies, isn’t there?  Or is it just me?

I knocked out everything on my list over the weekend. Would you care to take a look at my baggies of prepared food with me? (What, like I’m actually giving you a choice?)

Here are 20 Breakfast Burritos frozen, ready and waiting in the freezer for a busy morning…

breakfastburritos7smI practiced FishMama’s baggie-air-sucking-out technique…very cool!

And here we have about 80 little Turkey Sausage Patties prepped and waiting to be cooked up for a breakfast or lunch…

turkeysausagebaggedsm

And here is a baggie of Whole Wheat Tortillas, waiting in the fridge to be made into Melting Snowflakes  or Tuna Wraps…

tortillabaggiesm

And here are a bunch of Mini Apple Pies in baggies ready to be baked for a special breakfast sometime…

miniapplepies8sm

And even though it wasn’t on the list, I had a chance to make a big batch of Whole Wheat Waffles to freeze (and pop in the toaster another day!). Oh look, I put them in a baggie and took a picture for you…

wafflebaggiesm

Thank you for nodding and smiling and saying “oh very nice, Laura” and trying to stay awake while looking at my all of my baggies of food.

I also made a batch of Homemade Peanut Butter and filled up a pint sized jar. Mmmmm! Um, here’s a picture in case you’d like to see it (and because I didn’t want the peanut butter to feel left out)…

peanutbutterjar

I think my most favorite part of my food preparation weekend was mixing together six pounds of Turkey Sausage!! When I make this sausage, I have to get twelve herbs and spices out of my cupboard. That’s kind of a lot of effort.  It was WONDERFUL to get out all of those ingredients one time, then make SIX batches of the sausage.

I saved out one batch of sausage to make the Breakfast Burritos, but made the rest (five pounds worth!) into little frozen sausage patties. I am SO excited to have these convenient little sausage patties in my freezer!

turkeysausagepattiessmI just froze them on parchment paper lined cookie sheets,
then put them into two gallon sized freezer bags
(shown above, because you know you want to go look at the baggies again).

To cook them, I’ll thaw the desired number of patties on a plate overnight in the fridge, then cook them up at breakfast the next day!

Wow, who knew 80 little sausage patties and all the other above pictured baggies of food could make me feel such a sense of accomplishment.

If I feel this great after making food and putting it into baggies…just think how I will feel when I watch my children receive a high school diploma.
