It’s become tradition around here. For several years, I have shared a list of our family’s favorite games, adding to the list each year as our shelf fills more and more. Welcome to this year’s Favorite Family Games List!

What Are Your Favorite Family Games

I LOVE that each year, you share your family’s favorite games in the comments. This has helped us decide which new games to get for our kids each Christmas. So keep the comments coming! Read through this list, then add your favorites in the comments section to give us all more idea!

Favorite Family Games List 2017

  • 5-Second Rule
  • Spot It!
  • The Game of Things (Great fun for a group!)
  • Rummikub
  • Settlers of Catan (With extentions, which you’ll need if you have more than 4 players.)
  • Settlers of Catan Cities and Knights (This is an expansion of Settlers of Catan. This is our favorite add on to regular Setters.)
  • Seafarers of Catan (Also an expansion of Settlers.)
  • Ticket to Ride
  • Carcossonne
  • Bohnanza (This one is unique. Great for older kids and adults. We love this one!)
  • Life
  • Risk
  • Manhattan
  • Guestures
  • Taboo
  • Blink (A great stocking stuffer!)
  • Headbandz
  • Acquire
  • Sequence
  • Clue
  • Apples to Apple Junior (This is probably our favorite group game. We don’t recommend the regular version of this game because the cards are less familiar to the kids.)
  • Scattergories
  • Pictionary
  • Cranium
  • Boggle (This game totally counts as school work, but no one knows they’re learning.)
  • Monopoly
  • Sorry
  • Quelf (I’ve actually decided that I very much dislike this one. The kids like it though.)
  • Racko
  • Balderdash
  • Yahtzee
  • Farkle
  • Pass the Pigs
  • Huskerdu (great for younger kids – still fun for adults)
  • Mastermind
  • Skipbo (We’ve played hours of this game through the years!)
  • Wits and Wagers
  • Anomia (One of my new favorites!)
  • Pandemic
  • Castle Panic
  • Mars Attack
  • Codenames

I love that many of these are small enough to put into stockings. I love that these are gifts the entire family can enjoy together. And I love that there is really no end to all the great games out there!

Ok, your turn! Tell us what your favorite family games are!

30 of Our Family’s Favorite Holiday Recipes (with a throw-back picture from 2007!)

December 8, 2016 by Laura 10 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I’ve shared nine years worth of holiday recipes here at Heavenly Homemakers. Nine!

You guys. Our boys looked like this back in 2007 when my site first became a thing:

boysbytree2sm2

Now they look like this. As you can tell, we got a taller tree. (I’m sure that’s the first thing you noticed.)

family-christmas700

Isn’t that a nice picture? Yes. Of course, this one is more normal:

family-christmas-silly700

I can’t get over how quickly my boys turned into men. I was there, and now I’m here, and I’m not sure how it happened. With love, prayer, tears, and lots of green beans, no doubt.

Today I decided to share 30 of the recipes that I’ve posted through these many Christmas seasons. You can bet the recipes that used more sugar were from my earlier blogging years! Slowly but surely, we’ve cut back on sugar content in our treat recipes. Somehow, the boys have still grown and lived to tell about it.

If you come across any of these older recipes and you think, “Hmm. I wonder if I can cut the sugar down in any of these?” the answer is most likely yes! The treats will still be delicious and your family’s Christmas will still be merry.

More than anything, it’s great to have Asa home from college for an extended time. (He nailed his first college semester away from home. We’re super proud of how hard he worked to keep his grades up. Now it’s time for him to catch up on some sleep!) I’m looking forward to some down time, movie watching, and game playing with the family during the next few days!

What special meals and snacks are you eating this week?

Dear Husband Who Isn’t Sure What to Get His Wife for Her Real Food Kitchen

December 16, 2015 by Laura 9 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Hey Ladies. Today, I wrote a post to your husbands. I thought they might appreciate some sly gifting suggestions. You can thank me later. Feel free to read this and put brightly colored stars on your computer screen to mark which of these you really want your husbands to take note of.

Dear Husbands,

I’m Laura. Nice to meet you. I spend quite a bit of time with your wife each day. We have fun together. Perhaps she’s mentioned me? You’ve likely eaten a thing or two that I’ve shared here. It was probably that one recipe that you said, “Mmm, this is good” and she said, “I got the recipe from that one heavenly homemaker lady who has four sons and loves butter and hates cleaning. She can’t talk and cook at the same time, but her recipes are good.”

Today I wanted to offer you all a little bit of help. Christmas shopping for your wife can be a bit overwhelming. I get it. Once my husband asked for a dremel for Christmas and I started to cry. (Not really. Maybe.)

Not only can I give you some pretty good ideas about what your wife might love for Christmas, I can even tell you where to get them. I’ve already done the price comparison. Not that she’s not worth a billion dollars, right? But she’ll love the gift more if you don’t knock out the food and toilet paper budget for the month when you buy her gift(s).

Now keep in mind, you know your wife best. If she’s not into practical gifts, by all means ignore me and go buy her something from a jewelry store. But if opening an appliance or a box of casserole dishes says, “My husband loves me so much!” then this is what you’re going to want to look into:

Pyrex

Pyrex dishes are more romantic than you think. I probably have over 30 pieces of Pyrex in my kitchen and they are more beautiful to me than diamonds. Important: If it doesn’t have a lid, it’s not worth having! Get your wife Pyrex dishes with lids because she can do so much more with them!!!! (Do I sound bossy? I’m really not bossy. I just feel strongly about my Pyrex lids.)

My favorite and most useful sets of Pyrex with lids:

Cast Iron

Cast Iron is very healthy to cook on and turns out delicious food – in particular pancakes, grilled cheese, and scrambled eggs with bacon. Get cast iron for your wife and you will reap the rewards, I promise.

Cast Iron Griddle

Cast Iron 3-Piece Skillet Set

Stainless Steel

It’s so shiny! (This is the practical gift version of a gold necklace.) If your wife wants to ditch her teflon (I recommend it!) this stainless steel pots and pans set is a wonderful replacement.

Cook N Home 12-Piece Stainless Steel Set

stainless steel cookware

Silicone

For a lower budget, or for a little add-on item to hide in your wife’s stocking – I have two fun little silicone items I love and use all the time. These will make your wife’s baking efforts easier. You want to make her baking efforts easier.

Silicone Baking Cups-24 Piece- Food Grade Silicone Baking Cups, Star and Round Shape-comes in Six Assorted Colors

silicone4

Artisan Non-Stick Silicone Baking Mat – 2 Pack

Nutrimill

I’ll follow the least expensive items with the two most expensive items. A Nutrimill has the potential to change your life (and save you money in the long run). Your wife can grind flour in it, making the most delicious breads and waffles you’ve ever eaten. As an added bonus, this makes your baked goods healthier. You won’t know about that though because you’ll be too busy enjoying your homemade bread with butter.

Nutrimill at Paula’s Bread

Blendtec

This is the priciest of all, yet perhaps the most useful. I use my Blendtec several times every day. It has saved me so much time! You’ll never need to buy another blender again.

Blendtec Designer Series Blender, WildSide Jar – Black

blendtec

As for the wrapping, you’re on your own. I’ve done all I can do here.

Order quickly, Men. Time is running out. May you have a wonderful Christmas morning in which your wife opens her gift(s) from you, then throws her arms around you and says, “Now I can make you the best pancakes ever!!!” Trust me when I say that these gifts offer a win-win situation for both you and your wife. You might want to also order a jug of Maple Syrup for the pancakes she’s going to make you. Just saying.

Sincerely,

That Heavenly Homemaker Lady

So Many Fun Peppermint Candy Crafts!

December 14, 2015 by Laura 5 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

You may have seen the DIY Peppermint Candy Bowl tutorial floating around online. Usually, I see videos like that and I’m like, “How nice for you. You like to take twenty-seven steps to make a recipe or a craft. You turn out amazing-looking dishes/crafts. Your videos make it look easy for everyone (but me). I must now go back to making kiddie crafts and stirring together 5-ingredient recipes because I can’t handle more than 2 steps while making anything.”

But the Peppermint Candy Bowls were different. This craft idea is as easy as opening a bag of candy, melting it for a short time in the oven, and…hmmm. That’s it. That’s all you do. It’s really that easy.

This is why I purchased a bulk amount of round peppermint candies before Thanksgiving. I would have peppermint bowls – I would. People would be impressed. My house would look festive. I could do this!

peppermint bowls

And then I cheated. I turned the job over to a college girl who was staying at our house during Thanksgiving week. She made all the adorable Peppermint Candy Bowls and I cheered for her. In the meantime, I ironed tea bags and she cheered for me. (Not really, because my craft didn’t look like much at the time so nothing motivated her to say, “Wow, Laura, you sure can iron.”)

Nonetheless, while our friend made Peppermint Bowls, I turned out these Lavender Oatmeal Bath Teabags – the gift tags of which made us both cheer. Also, we watched a cheesy Hallmark Christmas movie while she was visiting because #sappymovies  #girlstuff  #absolutelynecessary

The boys got home from basketball practice before the movie was over. They immediately began making fun of every line and every situation and all the fake snow falling at just the right time. Just whatever, boys. I cater to you and watch your blow-up movies all the time and don’t make fun of your fake explosions and people with unrealistic abilities to climb buildings or throw large machines. #whyineedgirltime

lavender tea bags11

So girlie stuff. Since the peppermint bowls were such a success, we talked about making more peppermint crafts. We bought more peppermint candies and put all the boys to work opening all of them and putting them into a bowl. (Why did I not get a picture of this?) It was our friend’s idea to fill an entire cookie sheet with peppermints and melt them down to make a tray. We never got around to it before the dorm opened up again, so lookie what I made all by myself!!!

peppermint trays

If you look real close (please don’t) – you’ll see that I got distracted and let my peppermints stay in the oven about one minute too long which resulted in a few pepperminty bubbles. The trays are still adorable and now my house is filled with fun, festive decorations!

Easy Peppermint Candy Crafts

What you need to know about making Easy Peppermint Candy Crafts

1. Get all the detailed instructions here. But in short, you put peppermint candies on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper (we found that a Silicone Baking Mat worked much better.) Bake in a 300° oven for 7-8 minutes.

2. Watch carefully the last few minutes of baking so as not to over-melt the peppermints. You want them just barely melted. Once they become shiny and runny, they become a peppermint disaster and you’ll have to throw out your oven and then you might as well move to another state. (I’ve obviously been watching an over-dramatic girlie movie.)

3. To make a peppermint bowl, turn the melted peppermints out over the bottom of a small glass or plastic bowl for easy shaping. We found it was best to wait about 30 seconds after the mints came out of the oven before shaping.

4. We found that it was best to make just one bowl at a time. These are a little bit time sensitive.

5. You need 19 peppermints for one bowl; 149 for a large tray (I did 6 rows of 14 alternated with 5 rows of 13); 17 peppermints for the tiny tray.

6. These are breakable. Do not bang these on a table or play soccer with them in the living room.

7. These are only barely sticky once completed. This makes them great for decorations or gifts. You probably don’t want to use the bowls for cereal and milk, though. I mean, you make the call.

Warning: These crafts are so much fun you’ll consider buying a warehouse full of peppermints so you can make an entire house of melted candy. You’ll want to experiment with other shapes and household items. You will become addicted to watching peppermints melt and become cute. The men in your life will wonder if you’ve lost your mind (again) as they dutifully take thousands of wrappers off peppermint candies as you have directed them to do.

Have you ever tried crafts like this? Have any fun ideas for shapes?

Cinnamon Sugar Pecans ~ a Great Gift or Christmas Snack

December 13, 2015 by Laura 13 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

Cinnamon Sugar Pecans

I don’t know how much these cost in the mall. All I know is that last week when my friend munched on these Cinnamon Sugar Pecans that were sitting on my table she said, “You made these?? These are phenomenal! We buy these at the mall every Christmas – but you made these??!”

Ah, well. I sure do love it when my friends come over and say nice things about my food. I mean – I love it when friends honor me with their presence and I can, in turn, bless them with something tasty to eat. Well, shoot. The food and friends thing – it’s just a win-win you know?

So back to how much Cinnamon Sugar Pecans cost at the mall. I have no idea. They must cost a lot because making these at home is not the least expensive snack or gift you’ll make this Christmas. Pecans aren’t cheap. I prefer organic nuts, but the cost throws me a little bit. I’ll only make these for the occasional treat seeing as our family (along with some friends) downed almost an entire pound of these in a day and a half. Of course, this is not surprising. We are the Coppinger family after all. “Oh look at all her tall, thin boys. They must not eat as much as other teens.” {Laura passes out with laughter.}

The least I can do for us all is to provide a recipe so we can make these at home to avoid having to spend more on these specialty pecans at the mall. I’m guessing these are lower in sugar, too. You’ll love how easy these are to make. And they do make a great gift – if you can package them up before they all get eaten by your family. Christmas blessings to you on that one.

Here are some online sources I like for pecans:

  • Braga Farms – I love this source. We visited their farm. They are fantastic people. I buy from them when I can.
  • Amazon – These are about half the price as those above, but they aren’t organic. They are a good quality, though.

Here’s a little look at each easy step of making these pecan snacks: whisk the egg white mixture, stir in the pecans, shake them in a bag with the sugar mixture, spread them on a pan to bake. None of this is difficult.

Steps to Make Cinnamon Sugar Pecans

Easy Cinnamon Sugar Pecans
As a happy aside – my family enjoyed sprinkling some of these on our French toast this morning at breakfast. I’m so excited that these are now a part of our list of holiday goodies to enjoy!

cinnamon pecan french toast

I feel like I should now make a gift card to go with these pecans, just in case I can set any aside to give as gifts. Here are some pretty terrible options I came up with as to what the card should (not) say:

  • Hope your Christmas is as nutty as you are!
  • I think you’re nuts!
  • You’re gettin’ nuttin’ for Christmas.
  • Don’t open before Christmas -no pecan! (that one is truly horrible)

Please, Friends. Help me come up with a good gift card tag line. Or maybe we should just eat all of these without sharing.

Many of these ideas came from you last year. It was so much fun to hear from you and learn from your skills and creativity. If you are working on anything this year, take some pictures, write down instructions, and send them my way. If I feel your idea will benefit my readers, I’d love to post it! But seeing as most of you are better at crafting than I, we’ll accept even the ideas with instructions that make me pucker up my forehead. (Decoupage? What’s decoupage?)

Below you’ll find links for 15 homemade gift ideas. They all cost less than $5, and some are much less than that! Some are gifts of food, some require a little more skill, all are fun to make and receive!

Fun Christmas Socks Gift Idea ~ Keeping the Mistle “Toes” Warm

December 7, 2015 by Laura 10 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. For more information, please see our disclosure policy.

I picked up several pairs of fun Christmas socks before Thanksgiving, so as expected, I bought some toothpaste and pencils to go with them. This is the obvious action to take when gifting Christmas socks. Everything I do is normal.

What actually happened is that I bought the fun Christmas socks with our adopted college students in mind. I figured I would package them up with some other goodies and put them in their campus mail. But then I came across the fun idea on Pinterest to fill the socks with treats and little gifts, and before I knew it (which really translates to several days and hours later) – I had six sets of these:

Christmas Sock Gift

These gifts were terrifically fun to put together! I went with basic wool socks for our three male adopted students, as you’ll see below. Since I’d gotten so many pairs of fun girly Christmas socks on sale, I decided to mix theirs up a bit. While it looks like they’re receiving mis-matched pairs, I actually rolled up the second sock of each pair and stuck it down inside the toes. So the girls are getting two pairs of cute socks. Sorry boys – yours are much more practical!

Christmas Sock Gifts

Speaking of practical – I included a few other practical items inside the guy’s socks. What college student wants to actually spend money on toothpaste and soap? Not to worry, I’m here to help. Their socks included soap, toothpaste, pens, candy cane chapstick, a small flashlight, gum, and candy (because not everything must be practical and at least I included toothpaste to brush away the sugar).

The girl’s socks were a little more on the fru-fru side because my inner girl rarely gets to come out in this household of men and all that I’d been holding back exploded in the dazzling Christmas aisles at Walmart. I got the girls sparkly lip balm and glittery nail polish, Christmas nail files, snowman pencils, face scrub, gum, and candy.

Our family then worked together to come up with a punny gift tag idea to attach to our socks. Our gift tag creativity hadn’t woken up yet that morning, however, so all we came up with was “Hope your Christmas doesn’t sock.” (Get it? Don’t try too hard.) Since that idea didn’t come close to making the cut, I searched online and came up with this:

mistle toes4

Yes. That’s better.

I then created a generic tag for all of you in case you’d like to steal this idea.

As I’m writing this, I realize that this would be a very good idea for those of you who live in a community with a large homeless population. Filling wool socks with practical items and turning them into fun gifts like this would surely be a blessing to the recipients. In my town, we don’t have many homeless, but we do have many low-income individuals and families. I’m working on putting together packages for several people we’ve met and become friends with this year while volunteering at our local mission. I’ll write more about this experience sometime. :)

Ideas to include in practical and fun sock gifts:

  • Chap stick
  • Nail clippers
  • Lotion
  • Soap
  • Candy/Chocolate
  • Pens
  • Small notebook
  • Toothbrush
  • Toothpaste
  • Kleenex packet

This time of year is so much fun!
