We’re gearing up for a very exciting week around here!! Be sure to join us for the Heavenly Homemakers Parade of Recipes and Cooking Tips, beginning tonight and running through Friday. My living room is still a big, big mess…but we’re getting there. The insulation is in, now let operation drywall begin. Instead of showing you pictures of the mess, I decided to show you a more appetizing picture of Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins because pictures of plaster all over the floor does not inspire you to plan a lovely menu, does it? I’ll post a whole lot of living room pictures once I have more to show!

My father in law will only be here until Wednesday, so here’s hoping he and Matt get most of the drywall up in the next two days. They have been SUCH hard workers and I am just so appreciative.

I just scored a great deal on US-grown organic almonds. If you have the freezer space and room in your budget to do this, you’ll save a bundle, too. I ordered 25 lbs. of organic almonds from Braga Organic Farms. The cost was $140, plus $10 shipping. Using the coupon code (“home”) for 10% off (found at the Heavenly Homemaker’s Healthy Discounts page), I paid $126 for the 25 lbs. Add the shipping back in and divide by 25, and I only paid $5.44/lb.! If you’ve ever bought (or thought about buying but were scared off by the price) organic almonds before, you know this is a fantastic deal. This is roughly the same as I currently pay for conventional almonds. (Read more of what Serina has to say…)

Almonds, pistachios…and most forms of nuts are a little on the pricey side even if they aren’t organic. But nuts are SO good for you and make a great snack. Buying organic nuts instead of conventionally grown nuts is pretty important in my opinion. I love that Braga Organic Farms has such great prices…and they’ve even provided a Heavenly Homemaker Discount!!

I’m not sure what it’s like at your house, but at my house today it is potato soup weather. And wear your slippers weather. And oh yeah…don’t forget to take off your slippers and put on shoes before you run to the store weather. I’m trying to retrain my boys to close the big front door when they go in and out…they are very much out of the habit since for the past few months we’ve been leaving it open to let the breeze blow through the house. If I had a dollar for every time I’ve said, “Hey! Close the door behind you!” today, I’d have a nice fat wallet. If they had a dollar for every time they’ve heard me holler and still left the door open, they would also have big fat wallets. As it turns out, neither of us have big fat wallets and the big door is currently standing wide open. ;)

We’ll be feeding the YC ladies soccer team dinner Monday night…lasagna of course. It’s what several of them request (with puppy dog eyes) when I see them and who am I to say no? My boys are also excited that I’m making lasagna…it would appear that I don’t make it enough or something. They throw a party when they hear that lasagna is on the menu. Maybe I should make more lasagna around here?

Menu Plan for the Week + Homemade Ketchup Update

Ever wonder what in the world happened to my homemade ketchup making experiments? Yeah, me too.

I’ve told you several different times that I was experimenting with a good ketchup recipe. Many of you have sent me wonderful looking recipes. And still…I have nothing to share with you. I figured I should at least offer a little update, for all of you who have been eagerly sitting there with a hamburger in your hand waiting for me to tell you how to make ketchup to garnish it.

Here’s what happened:  I tried two different recipes several months ago. We sort of liked one and really didn’t like the other. I thought maybe after they sat in the fridge a few days, we would like them more, but we didn’t. Then you sent some recipes and they looked really good and I picked out a few to try…but then I never did because there are just SO many things to do and recipes to try and posts to write and children to watch flying off the stair railing.

And so I just keep getting this kind. And I like it. And all it requires is opening a bottle and squeezing. 

I make almost everything from scratch. I have decided to give myself a break on the ketchup and buy it for now. Until I can catch-up. I will leave “homemade ketchup” on my list of reader-requested recipes…but for now…if you’re sitting there with your hamburger waiting for the homemade ketchup, I’ll have to apologize and say…go ahead and eat your burger. :(  I think that I thought making a tasty homemade ketchup would be easy…and it’s kinda not. I wanted to make it easy for all of us, you know?

On another, happier note though…you know our little corn crop that got pummeled by the wind? You were all right in your comments. It DID perk itself up and we have been able to save most of it!!! We were so excited that Matt did a little corn photography:

Pretty menu planners make me happy. They are much nicer to look at than a piece of faded paper ripped out of a notebook and thrown onto my fridge. Any menu planner is better than having no plan at all, but still…isn’t it more fun to be pretty and organized?

We survived our nine soccer games last week. We survived the musical. In fact, games and musical were better than great! You’ve heard enough about our soccer week, but I’ll share more about the musical later…because you do want to see my boys in their costumes, right? 

Now, we are enjoying some out of town guests for a couple of days! I’ll share more on Gratituesday!

Here’s our menu for this week! Oh, and I’m happy to report that we have way less than nine soccer games this week…plus NO musical practices! Whatever shall I do with all my extra time?!

Our boys’ musical is this coming Saturday. Their costumes are coming along…I’ll be sure to get some pictures to show you what I came up with. Again, making costumes? Not my gift. Nodding yes when someone offers to help me. Oh yeah, I can do that.

How I Plan our Meals + Our Menu Plan This Week

Recently one of my readers asked if I have any special method for menu planning. When planning a menu, I usually ask myself these questions:

  • What do we have going on this week (field trips, soccer games, events, church activities, company coming, etc)?
  • What is Matt’s work schedule this week?
  • What do we have in the fridge that needs to be eaten up?
  • What did we eat last week? (so I can offer a variety if possible)
  • What do I have in the freezers and pantry?

Then, I plan meals accordingly. If we have soccer games, I’ll try to plan a quick meal before we leave…or plan something easy to heat up when we get home. If Matt is working in an evening, I’ll plan a bigger meal for lunchtime so he can share it with us. If we have a homeschool activity in the morning, I’ll plan something quick to heat up when we get home (or something transportable so we can eat on the way there or back).

I try to plan a variety, so that we don’t have three chicken meals in a row or the same veggie all week long. This helps keep food exciting for the kids…plus makes sure we get many different kinds of nutrients each day.

Hey, question for you of the UTMOST importance (not really)…

We got our toaster as a wedding gift and it has lasted 15  years (which means it’s actually 105 years old in toaster years – impressive). It’s been good to us and has toasted hundreds upon thousands of bready items. It is now on it’s last leg…sometimes toasting…sometimes forgetting to toast…sometimes sleeping through the entire process.

It’s time to get a new toaster. My question is…do you have any recommendations? Do you know of a great brand of toasters? OR do you think we should just get a toaster oven instead?!

See, I told you my question was important.
